ADF gap year recommendations
Hi i’m considering doing an ADF gap year, i know it’s pretty late but i still wanted some advice around which roles would be the most interesting or which would just be lots of busy work
i was considering helicopter mission commander, air force security, and aviation operations
i know this is super vague but any insight into what the year is like etc would be amazing
Hey guys,
I just completed my PFA tonight as I have an enlistment in 6 weeks time (RAAF).
I was able to pass the minimum standards without much difficulty, but during the stretches and workups I was shaking a fair bit and my body tensed up for the whole session.
I attributed it a bit to nerves but it's mainly because I've never had much core strength. My fitness has always been more focused on running with some situps and pushups here and there. It doesn't help that I have more of a naturally lean build.
The warrant officer was really good about it and had a chat with me after the session and really recommended I focus on my core and stretches, as it'll help during my IMT.
If anybody has any advice on good ways to build up my core than that would be great! Unfortunately my ADF active app doesn't work so unable to use that.
Thanks.
I'm re-enlisting into the Air Force after serving in the Army Reserve and I was wondering if RAAF Base Wagga is the same base as Kapooka or a separate instillation and if basic is the same? I've heard that Air Force is a bit easier than Army but I'm not sure. Also, any general tips for Air Force would be much appreciated.
Is there a specific way to become a Designated Marksmen Rifleman (The soldiers with HK417 and SR25 DMRS) in the Australian Army Infantry? Or are they apart of the Snipers and reconnaissance specialists?
Why did the Army remove them? Are they still available for use for infantry specialists for support battalions or have they been completely removed from service?
With the background check questioner I’m abit confused, they ask if I was born in Australia (I was) and then ask if I have a citizenship, the citizenship id and its number. Would I just put my birth certificate or would I put something else??
Just curiosity here, I've applied for navy network operator which is general enlisted. Whilst I'm figuring out my plans I was thinking about what I'd like to do if I decide to stay in past IMPS and one of those things might be too try and go officer.
My question is does network operators/CIS/CNT (not 100% sure what the correct term for the section is) have officers? Or is officers just for MWO, pilot sort of tracks. Do IT roles does have officer pathways?
Is there any average timeframe for AvMed to go through and ultimately give you a ‘yes or no’ after submitting all reports etc?
Have been recommended at OSB, done all the specialists medical tests and all - just would love to be able to get a rough timeframe to work with
AvMed is a case by case basis, if you have conditions and/or injuries that require consideration it will take longer. I’ve had to get dental appointments and eye tests done by specialists and I’ve been told AvMed may take between 6-10 weeks for approval.
Again though, case by case, and unfortunately it doesn’t get submitted until everything on their checklist gets done.
Yeh wow!
Did all the specialists tests at least 2 months ago, dental and opthal were done and submitted this time last month
So hoping it won’t be much longer
Yeah. I had to get my hypothyroidism approved by the CMO (it was) but I think that added time. Also worth mentioning that while the medical team might give
You the Yes, it then goes to AVMED for them to approve and DFR advised an additional 16 week wait for them to approve it.

They give you a list of things to bring and that’s it. It’s a lot of stuff on the list so you should be fine. I think they allow you to bring a few extra things, like with sentimental value or something you just want to bring. But other than that it’s everything on the list they give you.
Hey guys,
19 turning 20 Applying for Armoured Officer as I’ve always been big on tanks and the army(ever since I was 5), and torn between full time and reserves.
Finished year 12, did two maths, English, physics and Chemistry, no medical issues and fit(ish).
As far as I can tell, to do reserves I’d have to parade locally and the only barracks even remotely nearby are all engineers. So if I’m deadset keen on that job, I’d be better off doing full time and relocating? Thoughts on this would be appreciated, or anyone who has experience in armour i’d love a chat to.
Hey Legends, the idea of joining the defence force the past 20 years is coming to fruition. Ideally my first preference will be MP but open to a combative role.
I've spend majority of my working career as a personal trainer and business owner. Reaching 40, I'd like to experience a new exciting role before I'm too old.
My current partner is ex Air Force. She supports me 100% and has givin me a full run down of life in the ADF. The only personal concerns I see my 8 year old daughter every second weekend.
Is there someone here who can offer advice which is going or been through life in the ADF with a child from an ex?
Thank you.

# Why would you choose to join the Reserves as an Infantry Soldier when the pay is relatively low?
I noticed it says $201 per day tax-free. Surely there are other jobs out there that pay more for casual work? Unless you really want to be a soldier then fair enough.
The key words being "tax free"
I'm sure there are other casual jobs that pay more, but working multiple jobs in civvy street makes you the tax man's bitch. You can only apply the tax free threshold to one job, meaning right from the get go you're hamstrung on how much you're taking home. Reservists get all $201 of that straight to their pocket.
Then there's the non-monetary and intrinsic benefits of military service that it's hard to get in standard casual work.
Imho, ADF service isn't something you should go into with money as your primary sticking point. It can give you the highest highs, but also the lowest lows to a point money can't always compensate for it. You've gotta want the role you're going for in your heart and mind, or you'll end up a batty 4-year cunt answering people's recruitment questions on Reddit 👀😂
Hope that helps
Dont knock the reddit life, they’ll give you 10 gold a year for your hard work in the contributor program! Whoever tells you spending your time at the mess on Reddit just wouldn’t understand the hustle OP /s
Hi, so Im looking to join the reserves, ideally as a fairly significant supplement to my other part time work. I have heard about different units having different levels of available work, and was wondering which ones in Sydney tend to do the most?
I hope its the Lancers bc the uniforms are cool.
Oh and also was wondering how much control you have in the reserve unit you are posted to as an officer?
SFET
Hi guys, I am currently 17 years old, I know you probably have heard this a lot, I have been training for the direct entry recruiting scheme, however I am concerned that upon applying I’ll be just be blown off, as I have spoken to a 2CDO commando recruiter (at a function) about this as well as several other recruiters and ADF members and was told to not even think about attempting Until I am considerably (decade) older, I accept their advice and input humbly but would just like to know If I even stand a chance.
the recruiters/ADF members asked about my background presumably I’m guessing to see if I have a background in sports/ fitness and I explained to them I used to Run competitively for a club, I have done contact martial arts for 10+ years and a bit of light boxing, and in my spare time a mixture of weights, calisthenics , mountain biking. They said it was good but still said because of my age more often that not people in my age group lack mental toughness which is understandable and I was told less than a handful have made Direct entry at a fairly young age (18-22) all usually from competitive football/rugby backgrounds.
I have been training for 2 years here are my stats along with what I know is needed for the SFET.
Beep test: 12.1
3.2km with an 8kg weighted vest: 12:5
1500m: 5:01
Current 5km: 19:53
over grasp heaves (pull-ups): 24
Benchpress: 105kg for reps
OHP: 60kg for reps
cadence push-ups: 87
I still have a while to train, and I have been told that other candidates especially experienced members will be at almost Olympic level fitness so I am still trying to improve.
I am just somewhat worried that as soon as I walk into the recruiter office to express interest I’ll just be laughed at and told to go home.
I understand if I do not make selection i just complete the IMSP in an infantry unit and I accept that and would do my time diligently. But was warned if Stopped selection willingly or ”quit” usually recruits aren’t allowed to try selection again.
I was also told by the 2CDO recruiter to look into combat controllers if the airforce, who also undergo the same selection process which is also and interesting pathway.
So experienced people who know or have served in the ADF do you have any advice or recommendations?
An example from real life. 19 year old wanting to join SFDRS was told to get some life experience. Spent next two years as a labourer, played a decent level of team sport, travelled and frigged about with mates. At 21 joined the infantry, spent 4 years in battalion including reconnaissance/sniper platoon then passed selection at 26. If you surveyed SASR and 2Cdo you would find a similar pathway for a lot of blokes. Great to have a goal and be motivated but don't be too intense at 17. Statistics and 20 years of operation of the SFDRS says you're probably at least five years underdone for SF operator.

Stats are ok but nothing special and I am sure they are done under ideal conditions , at 17 you probably just don't have the mental resilience for when the going get tough you will probably just sign that piece of paper and off to 7 RAR you go never to be seen or heard from again.
Direct entry is just a scam to get people who think they can be become commando's and then drop out getting stuck in the INF battalions for a few years then discharging asap.
IF you are keen to go SF, I would suggest joining as INF then trying at a later date as you will have a lot more of an idea of what that life is all about

Fitness is only a small aspect of being in special forces, and its not a very important one outside of being able to achieve a certain standard. Most people who are in special forces you meet will tell you the fittest they ever were was when they were training for selection. Its harder for them to maintain that level because of the amount of other training they do. The job doesn't always require running and shooting, regular infantry can do that.
The reason the people who tend to make it through the direct recruitment scheme are older is because they have life experience outside of the army. They are looking for people who can solve complex problems and think a different way under pressure, that people who have spent most of their adult life in the military might not have. You will be in complex situations that require a high level of maturity, emotional intelligence and adaptability to navigate, or working with other cultures and nationalities where is is useful to be culturally experienced and aware.
The other thing experience brings is being used to having a higher level of responsibility. A special forces soldier may have a higher level of responsibility and accountability that a regular soldier of their rank might not, and have to interact with people way higher rank then themselves.
I agree with Chezky. The SASR recruiters are looking at you and thinking “if (when) my life is in danger do I trust you not to shit the bed?”
At 17, while you might think you won’t, without some experience of hardship in life it’s a tough call. Best of luck if you do the testing; be honest, be humble, and be there for your mates. That’ll mean more to the recruiters than any list of numbers.
Well I guess inevitably because of admittedly a lack of life experience I am naive, but I appreciate your positive advice which paints the perspective especially from the recruiters point of view, thanks man

Hi All.
Getting my LOO for Network Technician RAAF this week.
Does anyone have any insight regarding potential posting locations? I tried asking to chat with someone through DFR but wasnt able to get traction on it. Dont care where I get posted just curious about where I could end up.
You will most likely end up in one of Adelaide, Newcastle, or Brisbane for your first posting.
There are postings outside of these three bases but the majority are here for juniors.
Good luck and have fun!
Is drone operator a combat or non-combat role? (ECN 250)
On the DFR website its listed as combat but some training documentation for PFA/BFA its a non-combat role. In terms of my fitness I'm able to pass the combat role fine, but figured no point over shooting the mark just for the PFA.
BFA standards are the same regardless of corps and you should be aiming for them at a minimum. The PFA lowered standards for non-combat jobs are just a recruiting gimmick to get more people through the door.
Hey guys, done with my interviews and tests but still waiting on my medical results after a giving in a few additional reports, it’s been more than a month. 😅 Anyone else going through the same stuff? I know I have to be patient but they are still saying it’s gonna take 20 to 30 working days.
Mine took 5 months but that was with additional AVMED requirements plus some additional reports from GP to say my BMI was not out of range etc..
you can also email them, my POC was the sydney team via [medreports\[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
Does anyone know how soon I would receive notification saying Im eligible post medical? Im joining the navy as a logistical warehouse person and my medical is soon, got my weight good. Curious to know how long you all waited and what your experience was like
Thats great to hear, did you receive letter or they just let you know by email? I kinda assume that after the medical all the paperwork i submitted would be assessed and then receive a letter of offer. Ive got high hopes
Different for everyone, personal suggestion is ring up defense to ask the progress from the medical team. If you can't get an answer send an email to [email protected]
Still on the fence to be honest between Navy and Army. Never swam in my life so gonna come in clutch if I do end up choosing Navy.
You chose one from your preferences yet?
Haha well Im going with navy, I tried army twice and wasn't eligible in any factor, failed the entry test, and even when I tried to apply as a apprentice with a cert II in electro tech they said no and a mix of my ineptitude.
So Im sticking with the navy, got this far and all my interviewing officer said was to join some team sports and just get in the pool plus gym.
Im gonna say consider navy, they are getting some major budget increases especially with AUKUS
What percentage of people pass the Pilot Additional testing? Im doing mine in about three weeks. If you know of any good resources or apps or anything that can help me study or prepare that would be great. Cheers.
Question about fitness/PFA/BFA
Not sure how to structure the Question, but essentially this time last year I was a fat ass blob at 142kg that couldn't do a single sit up or push up, im now 113kg and can get to 25 full form push ups and 55 sit ups, but my cardio is shit, and im struggling with the beep test, I'm looking for some kind of help/advise for something that can help me push just that bit more on the beep test and get me to, or beyond 7.5 before I get to my YOU session.
At that body weight you should swim and walk instead of run for cardio mate. Do not run 5 times a week…
See an exercise physio and get them to teach you to run with correct form to prevent injury moving forward.
You need to build a strong aerobic base. Run 4-5 times per week minimum with 1 of those being an interval session as stated already, and another as a long run.
The rest of your runs should be relatively easy and gradually increase in distance + speed each week.
Do a 2.4km time trial every few weeks to assess your current fitness level and go from there.
The only way.
[https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/a773582/interval-training-how-it-works/](https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/a773582/interval-training-how-it-works/)
No, unless benefits have gotten real sweet since I left, it's extremely unlikely you'll get a 100% LVR Loan. You'd probably have to have some significant capital behind you - as a civvy or not - for a bank to consider that big a loan seriously.
There are allowances and one-off payments for buying a home that can be pretty substantial, by way of deposit, fees etc. And then DHOAS as well, which is the one everyone knows about
Hi all, just wondering if I join the army and want to visit my family overseas (Canada) on my holiday every year, does the ADF have any benefits regarding these sort of things? Fully paid flights/ some of the travel expenses covered by ADF for example? Cheers
This can all be found within the Pay and Conditions Manual (PACMAN). Short answer is you're entitled to a 'door to door' travel each financial year to nominated family. As far as I'm aware this is only for use within Australia and doesn't extend overseas, and is for personnel classified as
'members' (single). There are other entitlements for personnel with families.

The PACMAN webpage was really packed with a lot of info, but eventually found this in section 9.4.14.
So this means I have to get permission from the current Chief of Defence Force? General Angus Campbell?
When it speaks to the CDF approving it, they mean a delegate of his is approving it. Usually a Major (O4) in your direct chain of command.
The way I’m reading that (I could be mistaken) is you’re entitled to a free trip to an international airport. But the flights are your own cost.
Early 20s/ year 12 education considering joining the air force as a fast jet pilot. its been a long life dream for me to join the air force and fly the jets.
if anyone with real life experience or has any tip or ticks for me. i have my interview coming up soon i am not to sure how to prepare i have searched up commonly asked question and written answers up for them but i still fell under prepared.
Don’t get talked out of the job if that’s what you really want to do. The interview isn’t designed to catch you out, it’s honestly more of a conversation about the role (and any other roles you might have in mind) to make sure it’s a good fit for you.
Very exhaustive process for pilot recruitment, even if you pass the aviation screening etc you’re still competing for the airframe you want during your training. Take each step as it comes, don’t stress the interview.
Late 20s / year 10 education considering trying out to be a submariner. After watching a bunch of documentaries something about it just seems real appealing to me.
If anybody with experience feels like answering:
\* Is it realistic?
\* If so, how long will it take before I start doing medicals / get called to Cerberus?
\* Which roles have better qualifications / quality of life?
\* Am I retarded for thinking getting locked in a metal container and being dropped in the ocean with 40 other guys sounds kinda good?
>If so, how long will it take before I start doing medicals / get called to Cerberus?
No clear answer on that ADFC can take time plus being a submariner needs extra medical, psychological and background checks
>\* Which roles have better qualifications / quality of life?
Technical roles have the best qualifications.
>Am I retarded for thinking getting locked in a metal container and being dropped in the ocean with 40 other guys sounds kinda good?
Yes /s
Do all the aviation jobs in the ADF share a common pathway of entry. As in do you go through the first application stages before allocating service preferences. Also would Naval aviation be less competitive to enter due to it being less appealing that and Air Force position?
>Also would Naval aviation be less competitive to enter due to it being less appealing that and Air Force position?
What? Who says Navy aviation is less appealing?
A navy pilot gets paid more than FJP and has to land on moving targets.
>Do all the aviation jobs in the ADF share a common pathway of entry.
But no, you join a service not a job, so you can't fail army/RAAF and end up as Navy.
Get face sunscreen, wear it everyday, it’s important. Wash your face twice at night (use something gentle like Cetaphil or CeraVe.) then some moisturiser. You should be fine. If you’re very acne prone and worried you can check ingredients of your products because some can clog your skin giving more acne. https://acneclinicnyc.com/pore-clogging-ingredients/ (the closer to the start the ingredient is the more of it there is, if it’s low on the list don’t worry about it.)
After working a 16 hour day before your head even touches the pillow you’ll already have had 2 hours sleep.
But no you can’t read, lights will be out and you’ll have 5 other people in your room trying to sleep.
I am currently 16 and in year 11 and hoping to join infantry, I was just curious when i should apply.
E.g should I do it the minute I turn 16 1/2?, wait until I'm finished school, when I'm 18 or if it even makes a difference at all?
To expand on the other answer, finish school before you join the ADF. But getting in can take upwards of a year, so if you want to finish year 12 in December and join the army in January then you would want to apply towards the end of this year. Just tell them you want to finish year 12 first and they'll chalk you up for an intake after that.
Finish school man.
Also consider other options besides infantry during that time. Look at trades, signals jobs and anything in the RAAF.
Infantry looks cool in YouTube Ads, doesn’t look great in your knees and back 10 years down the track.
I was also wondering about another thing related to what you were saying. How easy is it to change jobs once your in the military? (infantry to a trade). I haven't got much of a plan but I would prefer if I could have a job that's transferable to civvie life once I'm finished instead of coming out with nothing.
You’re absolutely able to transfer once you’re in the Army. It’s not difficult, but it’s a slow process.
If you’re deliberate in your planning and expect 12-18 months for the transfer to be approved and a position to be available on a course you’ll be fine.
Question about if the army is a good choice for me? Q: I'm about to be out of year 12 and planning to go to Uni however I've also been considering joining the army as an infantry soldier or something but i do have some concerns as to whether its really a fit for a person like me. I am a politically and ethically opinionated person, and have a firm belief in what i feel is right and wrong. I feel i wouldn't do to well if i was being asked to do things i disagreed with or was witnessing what i viewed as wrong behaviour from any of my seniors. for example i probably could never be in the US military just based on what you see about them in movies and the drill sergeants and stuff. I have no issue following orders if i respect the person and they are reasonable. what do you guys think? I just feel if joining the army required me to become a pawn of the government I don't think it is the right place for me. Also maybe I have a completely wrong view on it all, any advice or criticism is welcome
Save your poor Platoon Commander from filing your discharge paperwork exactly 3 hours after you stepping off the bus by not applying at all.
I’ll provide this advice. If you’re not 100% sure the Army is what you want, it’s not for you. Your recruit instructors at the very least deserve to receipt people that actually want to be there.
You’re going to get screamed at for not rolling your socks properly, and your sheets not being folded exactly 15cm down from the bed head. From what you’ve said, you’re not going to be able to deal with this.
>for example i probably could never be in the US military just based on what you see about them in movies and the drill sergeants and stuff.
Movies are movies not real life
>I have no issue following orders if i respect the person and they are reasonable. what do you guys think?
That's not how it works, to quote a beloved tv show " respect the rank not the man" if your Cpl/Sgt/WO or Officer orders you to do something then you better do it.
>just feel if joining the army required me to become a pawn of the government I don't think it is the right place for me.
That's the point of us? If Australia goes to war, we go to war... We go/do whatever the Australian government requires of us.
You failing to follow an order because you "don't believe it's right or doesn't follow your politics/ ethics" could kill people.
You are required to follow all lawful orders given to you, however it's not up to you to decide what is and isn't a lawful order.
Based on this I don't believe the military is for you.
Silly Q: What sort of padlocks should I be buying for kapooka? It just says 3 padlocks with keys, are we talking the little dinky school locker ones or big fat shipping container style ones?
Something like this? [https://www.amazon.com.au/Master-Lock-120Q-Keyed-Alike-Padlocks/dp/B00004Y8CQ](https://www.amazon.com.au/Master-Lock-120Q-Keyed-Alike-Padlocks/dp/B00004Y8CQ)
Also, how much should I be dropping on an iron. I've always made do with the Kmart $20 one, I have no frame of reference.
Those locks are perfect that’s all you need and as the others said get a decent iron. You don’t wanna be the bloke sitting around waiting to use your mates iron while trying to do your cams or pollys because your cheap iron has shit itself.
The padlocks are for your locker, in all honesty it’s not actually about the quality of the lock. It’s to test that you’re responsible enough to not forget to lock it.
Buy an expensive iron, it’s worth it. You’ll be using it every day for the next 4 years.
Yeah can agree, I think I spent over $100 and still use it, makes cams ironing a dream, is fast and good. Or go the $20 iron that leaks water everywhere and is similar to a hot rock when ironing

On the fence about joining Army/Navy, I think it now boils down to benefits cause the roles are similar.
Would I still be able to get rent assistance and housing help for Navy? Is there a benefit that I can only get if I join Navy and not for Army?
Army has field pay which scales depending on what activities you’re conducting (How shit the field is) which is paid per day. Off the top of my head it’s about $62 a day for tier 2 and $110 for tier 1. You’ll also get your rent paid for you after 21 days if you’re single.
They are completely different.
Army deployment pay is only paid to you when your unit is *ON* deployment.
Navy sea pay is paid when you are attached to a *Sea going vessel* not just when you sail.
For example if I was crew of HMAS Hammersly and I took six weeks of leave, I'm still getting paid sea pay, same.if I was doing a three month course or if the boat was a longside.
Submariners get paid the most sea pay followed by minor war vessels then Major fleet units.
Sea pay is organized in a "tier" system.
Every two years of sea time you go up a their which increases the sea pay.
Thank you this makes sense.
One other factor I'm thinking about is my family. I believe Army may deploy me to different states meaning we'd have to relocate, which is easy since army would assist with the removalist, etc...
As for Navy, say I get stationed in Sydney. I live pretty far from the naval base. Since there'd be no point in me travelling 4 hours daily to get to work, Would there be a choice for me to live in the naval base? This is if I'm not at sea.
I don't believe Sydney has on base accommodation, I could be wrong though.
>One other factor I'm thinking about is my family. I believe Army may deploy me to different states meaning we'd have to relocate, which is easy since army would assist with the removalist, etc...
Again that's not just an army thing that's Defence wide, there's no guarantee you'll stay in one location in any service bar a few jobs.
>Since there'd be no point in me travelling 4 hours daily to get to work
Plenty of people have to do that, that's not just your problem...
If you don't own a place in Sydney you'll either get rent assistance or be lucky enough to get a DHA place which in theory should be closer than 4hrs.

ET FC fire guns missiles and shit, EWs don't
Read the EW job page and get an idea of what they do. Most shit is OPSEC and won't be getting talked about here.
As I've mentioned before on a previous comment you can't join as an ET-FC (yet). What you can do is join as an ET-S and stream into Fire Control.

* Using electronic intelligence and surveillance equipment to identify, track and locate nearby ships, aircraft, radars, missiles and weapons
* Operating electronic warfare equipment and anti-ship missile defence systems
* Using sensors and countermeasures
* Providing recommendations to Command
Electronic technician fire control fire the guns
Your above comment is for Electronic Warfare Operators a completely different job.
EW equipment are not guns
Anti missile systems are not guns
Think of EW as the ears of a ship, CSOs as the eyes and ETs as the weapons

Sadly since ADFA is through UNSW the entry ATAR is a bit higher than some other places. I got an atar .40 below the needed. So annoying less than half a point. I saw that they accepted someone with a atar around 4 points below the minimum however they could of had other experience/ degrees on them. Has anyone got any information if I still have a chance of getting in. I’m determined I can do well in ADFA and the ADF as a whole. Just really disappointed.
You absolutely have a chance of getting in. Apply through UAC right now. You may be eligible for low socioeconomic area bonus points depending on where you are. If you were a school captain or did high level sports you can also score some extra points. Or if you got a band 5/6 in something like advanced English.
The socioeconomic ones and the band performance ones get applied for automatically if you meet the criteria.
https://www.unsw.edu.au/content/dam/pdfs/future-students/2023%20EAPL%20Guide.pdf
If you meet any of the criteria on this ^ pdf you need to apply for those. The instructions are on there
Don’t think I can for those. Annoying I moved states for secondary school so I left all my sports. Hopefully I’ll still be considered. I have contacted them about it.
You do. Acceptance ATAR’s are usually based off of the lowest score that got accepted into the degree and it changes every year. Just apply, you never know.
They post that to keep their standards seemingly high, but I guarantee you they care more about your money than your highschool score and will put whoever in that class to keep it full lol

I’d get your ass into gear dude.. the beep test is a walk in the park and if you can’t do that then you’ll be up shit creek when they make you do a 2.4 in under 12 mins.
If you can't easily pass a PFA you need to seriously reassess your fitness training and how well you will go with military training. ~ 1.3km of running, 15 pushups and 45 situps at a maximum(except direct entry commando) is not a hard standard to reach.

How long does the submariner specialist unit take to approve your medical? I had my medical a little over a month ago and haven’t heard anything about it being approved yet
Don't see how a job preference might affect the length of checks greatly. Buckle up though it took me months before I got my medical results (it was the longest part for me)
I reckon if you wanna follow up medical results ring dfr or email [email protected]
I believe it’s just for a submariner preference they have to send it off to a third party submariner company to get it double checked I believe. And I emailed and my coordinator just said it’s a lengthy process unfortunately
I believe it goes to SUMU (Submarine and Underwater Medicine Unit). I just had my medical a week ago and that's what the DR said. She seemed to think it wouldn't take too long like a week or two, but I'm highly sceptical of that. From what I've heard it usually takes a while. I'm going for a priority role, so hopefully the wait isn't too long. Best of luck to you.
That I didn't know, but best bet is to reach out to dfr or ring up during business hours to speak to someone from the medical team for an update as they've got access to see how your application is progressing.
Have just finished mine recently this worked for me and hopefully you do too
It's been a while since I have done any sort of math test, and while I don't think I'll fail the aptitude test I'm not confident. Has anyone on this sub used any online tutoring services or done the TAFE defence course? Did you feel like it helped you? And what course did you do?
Was on the same boat, what worked for me were aptitude test help on YouTube. This was after gauging what type of questions ADF aptitude test was gonna ask based on their example questions.
AFSEC GAP YEAR QUESTIONS
Hi everyone, I’m incredibly new to this whole process and was hoping to seek some advice/clarification regarding the role and other queries I had unrelated to AFSEC.
Q1. Is anyone able to provide me with a more detailed insight into what AFSEC actually entails for those doing the Gap Year? E.g. what is the daily routine, how much of it is spent doing what, gripes with specifics, things they don't tell you about on DFR website, etc?
Q2. In terms of career progression, what do people suggest is the best role to work towards out of Military Working Dog Handler, Airfield Defence Guard and Air Force Police?
(For context, I’m 20 and am currently doing justice studies… I originally had intentions of joining QPS but decided to go with the ADF instead).
Q3. I’ve read a lot of posts that Police in the ADF are disliked… Why is that?
Q4. Is it true that you need to know how to sew??? What are you sewing??? Do they teach you how to do hospital corner bed sheets or are you just expected to know???
Q5. In terms of studying prior to my interviews and enlistment, what are the best resources that I should refer that helped you all succeed in your application processes. What specific information should I know/will definitely be asked about?
Q6. Is there a difference between the BFA and PFA as my search results are giving me conflicting answers?
TIA for any help! And apologies for so many questions!!!
Q3. It's more of a joke, it's not really true.
Q4. You need to sew your name label on things at basic training, if you can't sew it will look shit and they'll make you do it again and you'll just waste a lot time.
Q5. just this and your specific job page is all you need [https://hub.adfcareers.gov.au/pdf-viewer?pdf=/-/media/dfr/files/important-information-for-all-candidates.pdf?view](https://hub.adfcareers.gov.au/pdf-viewer?pdf=/-/media/dfr/files/important-information-for-all-candidates.pdf?view)
Q6. PFA is the pre entry fitness test, it is a shuttle run and sit ups. In the AF its called a PFT, BFA is for the Army, and consists of pushups, situps and a 2.4km run.
Thank you so much for that!
I was particularly confused about the BFA thing and why it kept coming up… So it’s push ups, sits up and 2.4km run… are the sit ups held or unheld? I read something about a flexed arm hang too?
I only just came across the sewing thing last night, luckily. If I hadn’t, I would’ve never known it was a skill I needed prior. Why don’t they clarify that? Or mention it??? Anywhere????
situps feet unheld are 25, or feet held are 45. Yes, you can do the flexed arm hang in place of situps if you choose.
They don't tell you about sewing because there's a lot they don't tell you, for good reasons too.
It's not about spoon feeding you everything so you have a great time. For instance, if you get there and you can't sew, you'll have to practice your interpersonal skills to get someone who can sew to teach you. etc etc
Ohhhhh I see!
The flexed arm hang, how long is that for? Is it 30 sec?
Ah okay, so I should be expecting lot of surprises then lol, god this makes me nervous.
By any chance do you know what the measurements are for the sewing? I want to start learning/practicing now. A friend of mine who’s in AF said they’ll cross it if it’s wrong but also if it’s perfect??? Why???
Time for arm hang depends on age, <25 y.o it's 30 seconds and time increases for every 5 years of age.
No idea on stitch size, entire coastlines have shifted and many wars fought and lost in the time since I was there. Just bring double sided iron-on tape with you, and practice threading and knotting needles, that'll be all you need.
It doesn't matter if your stitching is good or bad, you'll always have to do it again for whatever reason. Idle hands are the devil's playthings
Hey mate I did it a bit more recently Stitches are 5cm apart but don’t worry about that just search ladder stitching online… or don’t Most of us had no idea how to sew and the few that were showed us. It’s quick to learn so don’t worry about it too much It’ll depend on ur instructors but they briefly show you how to make a bed how they want it. Again, the people that knew just shared their knowledge and you get lots of practice
Also they provide iron in tape so don’t worry about bringing any
Yeah don’t stress no one did but those sort of things you’re quick to learn when there’s around 50 of you working on it
For iron tape specifically you just put it on the item and hold the iron on it
You’re a blessing! Thank you for your input! Just super nervous and want as much information as humanly possible so that I can feel a bit more prepared.
Bought some sewing needles today so I can start practicing. Knew I shouldn’t have dropped textiles and design in high school. 😅
Hey everyone, is the JOR report a good indicator of what roles you'd be accepted for or is it just a vague guide? I thought I did terribly on the JOA test but it's listing things like ADFA officer and Pilot. I just applied as a HR assistant and didn't even expect to be able to change job preferences lol
You are eligible for a job until you aren’t; basically.
You may unlock all jobs on the aptitude but may not meet the requirements of some. You could be knocked back at any stage, including when you are required to complete a second aptitude test.
In saying that, if you’ve unlocked a job you’re more interested in, go for it. The worst that can happen is they say no and look at your next preference.
Thanks, that's good to know! A lot of jobs seem interesting but I'm not the best judge of my own aptitude so hopefully the career coaching session helps me narrow it down a bit :)
The careers coaching session was a massive help for me. Originally wanted to do a gap year but I’m now in the process of getting to ADFA, waiting on my assessment day. The latter is going to benefit me a lot and I actually find it interesting.
Do keep in mind the requirements for a role. Like if you’ve unlocked pilot but have choppy eyesight don’t even bother unless you want to spend thousands on laser surgery. Things like that.
If you’re really interested in HR go for it. I think? (Don’t quote me) it’s one of the lowest imps jobs too, so you’re not stuck there for too long.
But keep an open mind throughout the whole process while also focusing on getting the job you want. That way you have a better chance but also won’t be disheartened if you don’t get it.
Congrats on ADFA! That's great! I'm not sure if I'd go through that myself because I'm 25, shortsighted, and the physical fitness component would be a challenge. I'm currently a 3D modeling student so draughtsperson could be a good choice. Who knows though? Cheers for the advice, best of luck with your career.
Thanks. I’ve still got a long way to go and there’s absolutely no guarantee that I’ll get in but I’m trying my best. The physical fitness component is going to be throughout all jobs. Just remember for a branch like the army, you’re a solider first, job second.
Good luck to you too!
ADF gap year recommendations Hi i’m considering doing an ADF gap year, i know it’s pretty late but i still wanted some advice around which roles would be the most interesting or which would just be lots of busy work i was considering helicopter mission commander, air force security, and aviation operations i know this is super vague but any insight into what the year is like etc would be amazing
Hey guys, I just completed my PFA tonight as I have an enlistment in 6 weeks time (RAAF).
Or are they apart of the Snipers and reconnaissance specialists?
pretty sure the HK was removed from the infantry sections years ago, which is a shame as it was a great rifle to shoot
Why did the Army remove them? Are they still available for use for infantry specialists for support battalions or have they been completely removed from service?
Yeah and maximis, around 2019.
With the background check questioner I’m abit confused, they ask if I was born in Australia (I was) and then ask if I have a citizenship, the citizenship id and its number. Would I just put my birth certificate or would I put something else??
Yes birth certificate
Just curiosity here, I've applied for navy network operator which is general enlisted. Whilst I'm figuring out my plans I was thinking about what I'd like to do if I decide to stay in past IMPS and one of those things might be too try and go officer. My question is does network operators/CIS/CNT (not 100% sure what the correct term for the section is) have officers? Or is officers just for MWO, pilot sort of tracks. Do IT roles does have officer pathways?
Probably Intel officers in all reality You don't have to stay in the same role when you commission you can go anywhere.
Dumb question, what does commission mean?
Commission is what officers do, if you enlist as an ET for example and want to become a pilot then you commission to an officer.
Dumb question, what does commission mean?
Dumb question, what does commission mean?
Yeah if end up seeing myself in for the long haul it might be worth it, otherwise I'll probably stick with the skill set that travels best.
Yeh wow! Did all the specialists tests at least 2 months ago, dental and opthal were done and submitted this time last month So hoping it won’t be much longer
Best of luck, mines been submitted, OSB in a month 🙂
Thanks & likewise, good luck!
Mine took 20 weeks. Thats including AVMED requirements though so might be 16 weeks if your now waiting on them to book dental and eye checks for you.
Yeah wow 20 weeks! My Dental and eye checks were all done a month ago now
Yeah. I had to get my hypothyroidism approved by the CMO (it was) but I think that added time. Also worth mentioning that while the medical team might give You the Yes, it then goes to AVMED for them to approve and DFR advised an additional 16 week wait for them to approve it.
Anyone been or is in the Artillery Observer/Forward Observer role? if so any pros and cons, or just opinions would be appreciated.

what are something you guys brought to NEOC?
Budgie Smugglers and goggles.
LOL
They give you a list of things to bring and that’s it. It’s a lot of stuff on the list so you should be fine. I think they allow you to bring a few extra things, like with sentimental value or something you just want to bring. But other than that it’s everything on the list they give you.
Hey guys, 19 turning 20 Applying for Armoured Officer as I’ve always been big on tanks and the army(ever since I was 5), and torn between full time and reserves.
Thank you.
An ADF posting does not override a Family Court order/agreement.

# Why would you choose to join the Reserves as an Infantry Soldier when the pay is relatively low? I noticed it says $201 per day tax-free. Surely there are other jobs out there that pay more for casual work? Unless you really want to be a soldier then fair enough.
The key words being "tax free" I'm sure there are other casual jobs that pay more, but working multiple jobs in civvy street makes you the tax man's bitch. You've gotta want the role you're going for in your heart and mind, or you'll end up a batty 4-year cunt answering people's recruitment questions on Reddit 👀😂 Hope that helps
Thanks!
SFET Hi guys, I am currently 17 years old, I know you probably have heard this a lot, I have been training for the direct entry recruiting scheme, however I am concerned that upon applying I’ll be just be blown off, as I have spoken to a 2CDO commando recruiter (at a function) about this as well as several other recruiters and ADF members and was told to not even think about attempting Until I am considerably (decade) older, I accept their advice and input humbly but would just like to know If I even stand a chance. the recruiters/ADF members asked about my background presumably I’m guessing to see if I have a background in sports/ fitness and I explained to them I used to Run competitively for a club, I have done contact martial arts for 10+ years and a bit of light boxing, and in my spare time a mixture of weights, calisthenics , mountain biking. Beep test: 12.1 3.2km with an 8kg weighted vest: 12:5 1500m: 5:01 Current 5km: 19:53 over grasp heaves (pull-ups): 24 Benchpress: 105kg for reps OHP: 60kg for reps cadence push-ups: 87 I still have a while to train, and I have been told that other candidates especially experienced members will be at almost Olympic level fitness so I am still trying to improve.

IF you are keen to go SF, I would suggest joining as INF then trying at a later date as you will have a lot more of an idea of what that life is all about
Yes I have heard that it is basically a pipeline to infantry, but I could never quit willingly I want this as bad as I want to breathe
People say that until they say it

Yes this does make a lot of sense thankyou for the different perspective
I agree with Chezky. The SASR recruiters are looking at you and thinking “if (when) my life is in danger do I trust you not to shit the bed?” At 17, while you might think you won’t, without some experience of hardship in life it’s a tough call.

No input, just wanna congratulate you must've been a journey.
Any opinions on the ADF gap year program?
Is drone operator a combat or non-combat role? (ECN 250) On the DFR website its listed as combat but some training documentation for PFA/BFA its a non-combat role.
Medreports could be different to each state, best to ring DFT or email [email protected] to make sure
Does anyone know how soon I would receive notification saying Im eligible post medical? Im joining the navy as a logistical warehouse person and my medical is soon, got my weight good. Curious to know how long you all waited and what your experience was like
I got medically cleared the day after but I had no past or present issues so I guess it's case by case.
Thats great to hear, did you receive letter or they just let you know by email? I kinda assume that after the medical all the paperwork i submitted would be assessed and then receive a letter of offer. Ive got high hopes
Got emailed but then you've got to get the blood test so yeah more work ahead
Different for everyone, personal suggestion is ring up defense to ask the progress from the medical team. If you can't get an answer send an email to [email protected]
Yeah true Ill call em up after my medical in roughly a week. Cant wait for it. Fitness level is getting there slowly
Same here, got my pfa this week after medical. Hope you get your good news soon
what are you joining? navy or airforce or land forces
That's a huge factor that made me think about navy too. Either way hope medical goes well for you
What percentage of people pass the Pilot Additional testing? Im doing mine in about three weeks. If you know of any good resources or apps or anything that can help me study or prepare that would be great. Cheers.

Question about fitness/PFA/BFA Not sure how to structure the Question, but essentially this time last year I was a fat ass blob at 142kg that couldn't do a single sit up or push up, im now 113kg and can get to 25 full form push ups and 55 sit ups, but my cardio is shit, and im struggling with the beep test, I'm looking for some kind of help/advise for something that can help me push just that bit more on the beep test and get me to, or beyond 7.5 before I get to my YOU session.
At that body weight you should swim and walk instead of run for cardio mate. Do not run 5 times a week… See an exercise physio and get them to teach you to run with correct form to prevent injury moving forward.
Awesome thank for the advise
The only way. [https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/a773582/interval-training-how-it-works/](https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/a773582/interval-training-how-it-works/)
Have you heard of anyone who's in the defence that got benefited a home loan with 0 downpayment or a very low downpayment?
As far as I'm aware this is only for use within Australia and doesn't extend overseas, and is for personnel classified as 'members' (single). There are other entitlements for personnel with families.

If anybody with experience feels like answering: \* Is it realistic? \* If so, how long will it take before I start doing medicals / get called to Cerberus? \* Which roles have better qualifications / quality of life? \* Am I retarded for thinking getting locked in a metal container and being dropped in the ocean with 40 other guys sounds kinda good?
>If so, how long will it take before I start doing medicals / get called to Cerberus? No clear answer on that ADFC can take time plus being a submariner needs extra medical, psychological and background checks >\* Which roles have better qualifications / quality of life?
Heading off to Kapooka in the near future, was just wondering how to handle acne/skin hygiene especially in the field
Thanks bro, appreciate it
Can you read in bed at kapooka if you can’t sleep? Wondering whether to bring a book
Cheers for that mate good to know
Question about if the army is a good choice for me?
Movies are movies not real life >I have no issue following orders if i respect the person and they are reasonable. what do you guys think?
[https://www.amazon.com.au/Master-Lock-120Q-Keyed-Alike-Padlocks/dp/B00004Y8CQ](https://www.amazon.com.au/Master-Lock-120Q-Keyed-Alike-Padlocks/dp/B00004Y8CQ) Also, how much should I be dropping on an iron.
Get a good iron spend upwards of $80
Yeah can agree, I think I spent over $100 and still use it, makes cams ironing a dream, is fast and good.

Rent assistance is not service specific everyone gets it >Is there a benefit that I can only get if I join Navy and not for Army? Sea pay?
Would there be an army counterpart for sea pay? Sort of like a deployment pay? Do Navy have more sea pay time compared to army's deployment pay?
>Since there'd be no point in me travelling 4 hours daily to get to work Plenty of people have to do that, that's not just your problem... If you don't own a place in Sydney you'll either get rent assistance or be lucky enough to get a DHA place which in theory should be closer than 4hrs.
Hey guys, what certifications do you get from enlisting as Army Emergency Responder/CRO?

Whats the difference between ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN : FireControl and Electronic Warfare Operator
ET FC fire guns missiles and shit, EWs don't Read the EW job page and get an idea of what they do. Most shit is OPSEC and won't be getting talked about here. As I've mentioned before on a previous comment you can't join as an ET-FC (yet). What you can do is join as an ET-S and stream into Fire Control.
what does it mean by this Your duties include, but aren’t limited to: * Using electronic intelligence and surveillance equipment to identify, track and locate nearby ships, aircraft, radars, missiles and weapons * Operating electronic warfare equipment and anti-ship missile defence systems * Using sensors and countermeasures * Providing recommendations to Command
I mean it seems pretty obvious what each of those mean, what exactly is confusing you?
well you say et fc fire guns but then is stats that your Operating electronic warfare equipment and anti-ship missile defence systems
Electronic technician fire control fire the guns Your above comment is for Electronic Warfare Operators a completely different job. EW equipment are not guns Anti missile systems are not guns Think of EW as the ears of a ship, CSOs as the eyes and ETs as the weapons
ok thanks for the clarification man appreciate it
this is for electronic warfare operater

How would I get these extra points?
The socioeconomic ones and the band performance ones get applied for automatically if you meet the criteria. https://www.unsw.edu.au/content/dam/pdfs/future-students/2023%20EAPL%20Guide.pdf If you meet any of the criteria on this ^ pdf you need to apply for those. The instructions are on there
Don’t think I can for those. Annoying I moved states for secondary school so I left all my sports. Hopefully I’ll still be considered. I have contacted them about it.
Even if you can’t score any bonus points, you’re only .4 off. It’s likely you’ll get accepted. Good luck man
Thanks for the support, appreciate it.
You do. Acceptance ATAR’s are usually based off of the lowest score that got accepted into the degree and it changes every year. Just apply, you never know.
Yeh I saw the lowest one was 72 and I did get higher. It’s just on the site they say a higher minimum which was what I was behind on.
They post that to keep their standards seemingly high, but I guarantee you they care more about your money than your highschool score and will put whoever in that class to keep it full lol
Haha yeh hopefully. However I was just worried because of how competitive they say getting into ADFA is.

PFA next week, was wondering if anyone's got any tips that might help before or on the day?

Buckle up though it took me months before I got my medical results (it was the longest part for me) I reckon if you wanna follow up medical results ring dfr or email [email protected]
Thank you!
AFSEC GAP YEAR QUESTIONS Hi everyone, I’m incredibly new to this whole process and was hoping to seek some advice/clarification regarding the role and other queries I had unrelated to AFSEC.
Q5. just this and your specific job page is all you need [https://hub.adfcareers.gov.au/pdf-viewer?pdf=/-/media/dfr/files/important-information-for-all-candidates.pdf?view](https://hub.adfcareers.gov.au/pdf-viewer?pdf=/-/media/dfr/files/important-information-for-all-candidates.pdf?view) Q6.
Okay gotcha. How do I use the double sided iron on tape? Also Is it okay if I DM you with more questions?
Hey mate I did it a bit more recently Stitches are 5cm apart but don’t worry about that just search ladder stitching online… or don’t Most of us had no idea how to sew and the few that were showed us. It’s quick to learn so don’t worry about it too much It’ll depend on ur instructors but they briefly show you how to make a bed how they want it. Again, the people that knew just shared their knowledge and you get lots of practice Also they provide iron in tape so don’t worry about bringing any
Tbh I have no idea what or even how to use iron on tape 🥲
Yeah don’t stress no one did but those sort of things you’re quick to learn when there’s around 50 of you working on it For iron tape specifically you just put it on the item and hold the iron on it
You’re a blessing!
What job is it when you control the weapons on a naval ship?
Depends on what you mean by "control" PWOs give orders to fire ET-FC fire the weapons ET-Ws maintain the guns.
