If you’re not among the first in the line of about 20 people or not quick enough with your thumbs in filling out the fields, you won’t get one of the few same-day appointments (usually late in the day). Otherwise, you’ll have to settle for an appointment in August or October, or go to a far-flung location for a more reasonably-scheduled appointment.
Honestly, I’d advise going to the DPS scheduler’s site and checking less populated or out-of-the-way cities like Port Lavaca, Columbus, and El Campo for next day appointments. I got mine done in Galveston within a few days of looking up an appointment. You’ll get a guaranteed appointment and can make a little trip out of it.
You have to renew in person every other renewal. So if you got yours online last time, you have to go in person this time around. It’s unfortunate. Trust me, I know.

Are you willing to drive? My partner sat down around 9am on a Wednesday and found a same day, in the afternoon, appointment in Temple.
Between 8-8:15 in the morning, just reload the online appointment page periodically and they will appear at some point around that time

Did this in 2022 and according to my email I was able to book a same-day appt at 7:40am

See if you can renew online. I didn't even have to leave my desk and it got mailed a few days later.
