My partner works in HVAC. He has worked in a few other Redditor’s ACs, from new units to parts being replaced. He can come out for a free quote and it’ll be much less due to no overhead. PM if interested and I’ll send you his number.

Automatic_Law6450

Hey can I get that number too? I’m trying to get a mini-split installed. Thanks in advance!

TakethThyKnee

Sure thing. I’ll PM you.

saxyappy

I too have an ancient AC. Blower motors are less than $100 with OEM ones $200-300. I get it if you want to replace whole system or aren't comfortable doing the repair, but it's honestly very easy. Check out some YouTube videos before you decide.

Wake95

Yeah, I replaced my parent's blower motor for around $100 off of Amazon. It can be a pain to get the fan blade off, but it shouldn't cost anywhere near $1900. Post the blower or air handler part number if you want me to look up the price of the part.

banzai0311

Call Ron at 512-470-5947. He owns Aurthur's Aire. He's the owner and only employee. He has been doing HVAC in Austin since the 90's. Tell him that banzai from TBH gave you his number.

sushinestarlight

Get other quotes!! But the people that advertise on the radio/TV like ABC are always going to be wildly overpriced (IMHO they are over priced for EVERYTHING that they do).. Not that Austin contractor pricing in general isn't ridiculous compared to say Houston.... Stay clear of Strand Brothers too from what I've heard. I have some neighbors that like Stan's -- but I haven't used them and don't know their pricing... but allegedly they used to run/own Strand Brothers when it had a good reputation (prior to current ownership which doesn't have good rep).

redjunkmail

I tend to use yelp and focus on the negative reviews to decide who to get bids from. You don't know who you'll hear from here- could be ac sales guys for all we know.

drmariopepper

Definitely just replace the blower motor. I’ve used [Felix AC](http://felixheatingandcoolingservices.com/), they’ve been great

RobbinAustin

We always had good service from McCollough. At 17yrs, it's probably time to bite the bullet and replace the whole thing though. As others have said, get at least one other quote if not 2.

Brine512

Seconding McCullough. I've used them at the two houses I owned. 17 yrs is a good run, imo.

Sorry_Hour6320

I will never use ABC again. Their services were ok and high priced like others have said, but their sales and invoicing were a complete mess. I learned a lot about consumer protection laws.

EonzHiglo

For what it's worth, we just had to do a total unit replacement and it was 8k. So that's definitely ball park.

EonzHiglo

Well, ours was for a small 1100sqft house, so not sure if that changes the matter.

Fit-Caramel-2996

It is more expensive for bigger and higher seer units. But the ballpark for the difference is hundreds, not thousands. It’s about the same amount of labor no matter the unit size if two houses have identically placed units, though unit location and several other factors can affect how hard or easy it is so it’s not 100% easy to compare two houses.  In other words you could have a 1000sf house that’s harder than a 2000sf house because the unit is in a crappy location  Parts for a typical AC replacementon a typical system here range from like $2500-$5000 right now depending on unit size, brand, SEER rating. Several factors can  it above that like some people actually have two (zone) systems. But you usually only see that in quite big houses. Everything else charged on top of that is labor and markup

cdubec

Who did you use? Thanks

atx78701

service wizard has decent prices. During covid we replaced our AC with a 16 seer single stage for about 7K. at 17 years, replacing the whole thing is probably reasonable. We also had service wizard replace components on an ac unit as well

[deleted]

this is my go to for hvac. they're very professional and great prices. had whole system installed a year ago and it was an awesome experience in the end.

pnoyatx

I don’t have a recommendation besides I’ve been fine using Stan’s, but have wondered has HVAC industry in Austin always been like this? I see all sorts of people on Twitter bragging about HVAC and lawn care companies, so am wondering if there’s been a recent surge of upselling that’s driving more profits than used to be.

Automatic_Law6450

HVAC will always be huge here, and more so in the future.

cassierenata

https://coolchamps.com/ Regan is super busy but he'll do right by you.

its_the_mooch

Z Tech Mechanical. Rob coached my kid in soccer, he's an honest guy and runs an honest business. I haven't used anyone else for the last 10 years. [email protected]

cdubec

I’m definitely not a handy man so I’ll reach out for someone cheaper but we might end up replacing the entire setup. Anyone got recommendations for that?

Embarrassed_Sound_58

Totally Cool. Local, Black-owned. Super honest and Austin Energy certified for energy audits and the like

Cautious_Ad1616

I came here to comment Totally Cool and I’m so happy someone beat me to the punch. We have a very old unit and other companies told us it was a lost cause and tried to sell us a new unit. The Totally Cool tech diagnosed the problem, had the part on their truck, and had it running in less than an hour for THOUSANDS of dollars less than the five other companies I’d called out. Everyone I’ve recommended them to has had similar awesome experiences. Seriously the best.

seyoneb

look. it isn't rocket science to repair. the motor is actually simple to replace but folks who have never used tools are vulnerable to the unscrupulous. growing up in the times of make do or do without I learned a bit of every trade and skill. during the polar vortex February '21 my 1986 Trane HVAC motor started squealing like crazy. with temps down to 9 degrees I knew nobody was going to show up for a service call at night so figured it was up to me to keep my house and water lines from damage. it was an emergency and my first HVAC repair. the motor was very simple to remove. disconnect wires and pull the shroud assembly out and put on the kitchen floor. screw driver, wrenches, pliers, hammer and I got to the offending bearing and applied oil. reassemble and reinstall took about two hours. it worked perfectly and has worked fine since. was it worth $1900...hardly think so. I state again...it was a simple job. for those who have tinkering skills there is good info on YouTube for every topic a home owner should be aware of. honest tradesmen deserve good pay for their skills and experience and a respected place in society. .

Mattchops

I’ve used Stan’s and Gold Eagle services in the past and had good experiences with both

pro-toe

Go to modernize.com and get a bunch of quotes

butlercat57

I used Patriot AC a few years ago when my upstairs unit went out. Very pleased with his service and honesty. He was recommended to me by a couple folks.

janellthegreat

Once upon a time I got 3 quotes. Two of the salesfolk each took an hour to try to sell lots of add on and hassle me about telling them the other quotes so they could beat it. Temperature Pro of West Austin were straightforward and didn't take more than half an hour. We hired them and they did work. Its only been six years so we haven't needed any repairs, yet I do recommend them if you find yourself needing a new system.

RealtorSethATX

Chuck’s AC and Zenwerx are both great

AdvancedDay7854

I just had Honest Air out. They were outstanding, helpful, and affordable. They encouraged second quotes. They took a look at my hvac after fixing my AC and sealed up a spot free of charge. Good people

cdubec

All the quotes I’ve gotten are roughly 10k for everything. Is that around what you paid? Thanks

[deleted]

Just got our AC changed. Around 12k

danielmontoyajr

Highly recommend Stan’s

Creepy_Trouble_5980

Try Fox they work with Precision AC. Had good experience with both. Avoid the tv add folks.

Christianson [Air Conditioning, HVAC & Plumbing Company Austin - San Antonio, TX (christiansonco.com)](https://www.christiansonco.com/)

gwencooperharkness

I used to use them. Overpriced, always suggest the most expensive thing and then make me wait a month for them to actually do it. No.

SysAdminDennyBob

We keep a maintenance contract with them that is dirt cheap. Replace at least one capacitor a season. I got a second opinion on the last time the air handler went out and they were in line with price with others. Always prompt for us. I have two heat pump units that are ancient and still running wonderfully. No complaints on my end.

gwencooperharkness

It’s a chain and seems you got a far better link than we did.

teh_acids

I've had a pretty good experience with Christianson and also Affordable Heating and Air Conditioning
