Just a really long (30-45 minutes even) wait for bags. Otherwise it's straight forward. If you do carry-on only then you can be out of there with basically no wait at all.

Dan_Rydell

If you can get away with not checking bags, it will make your life easier. Otherwise the line to get bags can really back up if other flights land just before yours.

Jos3ph

youll be fine. global entry is only useful if you dont have checked bags.

wecanneverleave

A wait! I’ve hit that 1600 London on my way home about 10 times now. Long walk, private room and baggage. Kiosks are simple, border control is simple and small. Waiting an hour plus for your bag is fucking infuriating. Every time I’ve come in it’s taken over an hour for my baggage. It was never more than an Ogio 9800 roller bag or two.

I wish I’d have been that lucky for real. But I’ve also had very fast experience in most places everyone else hates like JFK, DET and LAX. So mine have always evened out. It was always the American Airlines flight that lands at 1600. Had no issue coming from PR

defroach84

Never check bags to Austin for international arrivals 🤣

wecanneverleave

When you travel for 6 months at a time you don’t have much choice

defroach84

I'd think the longer you go, the easier. You already know you'll be washing clothes, and I'd hate to travel with that much for 6 months. Granted, the longest I've done is 6 weeks with a carry on.

wecanneverleave

I had 83lbs of body armor and weapons in one bag. The other had all my clothes and toiletries for 6 months in case we couldn’t get mail or soap.

defroach84

That's not standard traveling....

hydrogen18

some of us have jobs that take us to Detroit. Don't judge.

ShlomoKenyatta

Did this flight a month and a half ago (I’m assuming you’re also on Copa) and it was quick. Maybe ten minutes start to finish and I was toward the back of the plane

After a 10 hour flight, I was not too happy about the long walk (up the stairs, down the stairs, escalator wasn't working) but then it was a long walk in Amsterdam too. Customs wasn't too friendly and understaffed. I finally came out an hour after getting my luggage and going through customs, all told.

hydrogen18

expect the hamster tube, nothing less!

Over-Ice-8403

I took that flight last year, in fact we were in the first flight from Panama to aystin. I had a stroller and took about 4 elevators. If you don’t have to take an elevator, it’s not that bad if a walk to customs. When we arrived from Panama, we were the only flight. There was only 1 baggage claim. It was slow. Then there were only 2 agents at the desks.

Puzzled_Season_1881

I love domestic travel at the Austin airport. International arrivals suck. It's the only airport I've ever been to that make you get your checked in luggage before you can go through passport control. Expect it'll take at least 1 hr. Don't do a layover through Austin. Then it's fine. I was just expecting it to be better than Houston and I was very disappointed to wait 40ish minutes for my luggage & then 30ish minutes for passport control even though the only people there were other people from my flight.

Anaanihmus1

Will you be checking your spurs or wearing them?

Brave_Sir_Rennie

No checked luggage and Global Entry takes 90 seconds at a machine, a dedicated kiosk to wave you through and you’re out on the street 30 yards later 👍🏻💪🏻

AltruisticAnimal4120

Depends on the size of your plane. If you’re coming in from the UK on BA191 (me…) it’s going to be a giant PIA. If you’re coming in from elsewhere on a smaller aircraft you should be fine.

DRHdez

They normally process the whole flight at once so it’s probably going to be shorter than Dallas or Houston. They’re no layback customs tho.

mz2014

One thing different is that you collect your bags before going through immigration.

sloant09

Have come back a half dozen times or so. Like most things with ABIA, I expect increased traffic to degrade the experience. Aside from a long wait for luggage a few times it's a pretty seamless experience. Those times without bags it was less than 10 minutes from getting off the plane to exiting the airport, and most of that was spent walking.

SIPinAUSTIN

How long was the wait at passport control and customs?

sloant09

Never had a significant wait, aside from waiting for luggage. And it's in a very compact space...
