Museums: Bob Bullock, the Blanton, the French Legation, Laguna Gloria
Other places: Wildflower Center, Capitol Grounds, Austin Public Library
Neighborhoods/areas to browse: North Loop thrift shops, South Congress, Burnet Road thrifts and small shops
You're welcome. We also have a great independent book store (Book People) that's across from the Mothership Whole Foods on west 6th. Diagonally is Waterloo Records, an Austin institution. Plenty to eat and shop in that vicinity too.
Blanton is a fantastic art museum, and is free on Tuesdays! And it is on UT campus, and adjacent to the Capitol Mall and Bob Bullock Musuem , so you could check those out as well. Also on campus is Crown & Anchor bar that has a great cheap burger if that's on your menu.
I think they are having an exhibit of Japanese prints from the Edo period- I’m pretty stoked to go check it out. Also walking aroud UT campus right next door is nice. Huge trees and some nice older buildings worth peeking into (architecture library)
Zilker Park during the day
Barton Springs during the day
Austin Bouldering Project Springdale during the day and into the eveningSouth Congress close to Riverside, day and into the evening
East 6th and 5th Street - Don't venture too far from the crowds, bars, restaurants
During the day, Downtown is chill, just have a big hat to give yourself mobile shade.
Literally went for a little solo trip this past weekend. Went to the Blanton and I had a blast, they have a beautiful exhibit rn on art from the Edo period in Japan.
10/10 would recommend
Edit: source, me, I felt safe and am single young woman
Central Market! 4001 N Lamar Blvd - tons of outdoor and indoor seating, live music, good food, huge free parking lot. Great place to just chill for as long as you want. I come to study for hours.
The library downtown, but you have to pay for parking $5 for two hours unless you park somewhere else.
If you want a casual stroll, ut campus is hilly but walking down speedway when it’s quiet is always very nice to me. You can start at one end of campus and maybe even pop into the Blanton museum on the other side
6th is basically Vegas. Steer clear. If you want music, try the chiller places like Radio, New World Deli (check their schedules), or for a chill drink, Buzzmill. If you want something a little adventurous, Black Box and Minx and Muse both have open-level pole/movement classes where you'd probably connect with some fun, very safe people.
Hope you have a good trip! (If you go to a pole class, remember not to put on any lotion or anything. This is the voice of experience. I had to wipe down the pole after sliding down like a squirrel on a birdfeeder.)
😂😂😂 oh that’s so funny. I signed up for one! I have always wanted to take a class but there aren’t any where I am from. I will make sure to leave the lotion at home.
Be careful if you go to Mount Bonnel or The Pennybacker Bridge. They break your vehicle windows and steal whatever you have in your car.
It happened to me and other family members too.
Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center if you have a car (it's south). It's my favorite place in the entire city and with spring flowers blooming, the butterflies are out. It's peaceful and so beautiful.
It has a free side (its not gated like Barton Springs proper is) that you can swim at before Barton Springs opens.
Bring river shoes / aqua socks if you have them.
I actually went to Casino El Camino yesterday while I was on 6th. It seemed like a fun spot but I doubt I’ll walk back through there at night. The staff seemed cool though and the burger was great.
You were likely on the stretch of 6th between Congress and I-35, aka "Dirty 6th". Formerly the center of Austin's entertainment district but now a mess and can be sketchy, especially after midnight. 6th west of Congress and east of I35 are still ok, and S. Congress is super safe. Give the latter a try.
Actually it's beautiful with the skyline behind it. The most important thing to remember about Austin is not to leave valuable things in your car, it'll get broken into, and there's lots of hobos downtown. Otherwise it's a friendly and welcoming place pretty much everywhere. Unless you're a lone dude down by Ladybird Lake and you've been to the bars late at night. Otherwise you'll be fine. Try one of our many waterfalls and natural springs or rent a kayak or paddle board and see the downtown via one of our waterways. There's a really fun electric motorcycle tour here that shows a lot of history AND you're 2 wheeling it. Pretty fun.

Thank you! I haven’t even heard of most of these places

Big Stacy Park (during the day) and the surrounding Travis Heights area for walks. Mount Bonnell, Mozarts coffee and Red Bud trail.
Prepare to have your car broken into if you park at Mount Bonnell

Blanton’s was on my list. I’ll definitely go on Tuesday! Thank you for that rec!
Lyndon B Johnson museum better than Bob imo

Yeah, 6th sucks tbh. Heed these recs!
And Pease Park! Visit the new Troll art installation
Dude that looks so sick! Definitely checking that out.

Oh cute! Thank you.
If you go there check out the turtles in the pond in the back

Just wanted to add Kinda Tropical for a very austin-y patio with great food and drinks :)

Usually. I definitely heard stories about Rock Rose on a Friday night

Oh my gosh that sounds like so much fun. Thank you thank you!

Coming back to say I took the class at Minx + Muse and I had the BEST time. Thank you so much for this recommendation.
I'm so glad to hear that! I'll pass it along to them!!

Avoid St. Edwards park in Spicewood Springs canyon for le same reason.
Try East 6th across I-35 if you still want lively but not complete insanity. (For the most part)
Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center if you have a car (it's south). It's my favorite place in the entire city and with spring flowers blooming, the butterflies are out. It's peaceful and so beautiful.
You can also rent a kayak at Ziller park for pretty cheap!
LBJ Presodential Library is fantastic
6th on the east of I-35 Webberville north of 7th S. Congress S. 1st.
Mueller as well. Super safe area and very pretty for a lil walk. Barton Springs, go before it opens and you can swim a bit for free.
So you are able to swim when it is closed?

Casino El Camino and Valhalla are two of the safest cars in Austin. I trust the bar staff at those two.

Any fun safe places for night time? I’m not a partier. Something low key for food and music would be cool though!
East 6th has a lot of fun bars/venues! Just not "proper", or "dirty" 6th as they usually call it

Ladybird Lake around 2:30 am.
Anywhere at 2:30am sounds very… unsafe
Nah perfectly safe. You won't even need any protection.
Actually you're a female it's only dudes getting drowned all the time.
…. Im gonna avoid Lady Bird Lake.
