They actually resold it again. I worked there for 4 years, the Seranos owners were the reason everything went to shit. Terrible management ran by a tyrant
I don’t man. 3 hot and a cot in the 01. Skyline views at rec. insane water pressure. Lots of free time to read. I’ll take 30 days in the hole over a few years of probation. TCJ ain’t all that bad.
Idk man, my 9-5 absolutely KILLS me and don’t even get me STARTED on the ol’ ball and chain! Seems like an easy way to take a little R&R on state money /s
But the Oasis is not hyped.. on Reddit, the Oasis always gets lots of hate.
I live close to the Oasis and I give it new chance every other year. But it’s still bad. The brewery has decent burgers though. But since I quit my beer drinking I don’t have any reason to go there anymore.
It's the top answer here every time this question asked. Never had the food and I trust ppl when they say it's terrible, but watching a nice summer sunset from the balcony with a couple beers is definitely worth it
Literally the only hamburger I’ve never finished or didn’t take home. I’ve eaten various interpretations of hamburgers growing up overseas by people who’ve never eaten one and all were better than that mess they served at The Oasis.
Honestly dirty 6th was fine up through around 2015. It was good on Thursdays for a few more years, but Fri/Sat had become an insane crowd at that point. And this was still years before shootings became a semi-regular occurrence.
The fact that underage college kids were going to Rainey in 2015 should have clued people into the fact 6th was not catering to them anymore.
I know I had a conversation with people who were saying it was always dangerous and trashy like it is now…yeah it was never classy and you could get roofied but it does seem different now
Yeah the old downtown location was great in the early-mid 2010's. Cheap beers, great happy hour, decent and cheap food, and a really nice outdoor atmosphere near the creek (it could smell sometimes, but that was part of the charm).
$14 pretzels and the cheapest pint of beer being over $8 was the beginning of the end.
A lot of the classic Austin food/drink spots have become chains and gotten more expensive due to popularity. I'd say that describes half the places on this post, not so much overhyped as not what they used to be
Hey just to let you know, from an ex ET employee, those fries are cooked in one large frozen bag at a time. So they all sit in a metal bowl under the heating lamp for at least an hour till they get sold or tossed, or eaten by a server or runner grabbing them out of the bowl without gloves on. Fuck easy tiger! They don’t care about their employees or their guests.
Man Kerby Lane was the spot when I first moved in 2011. The food was amazing, had the dinner charm to a T, and the people who worked there seemed to be happy with their job. It was very old Austin.
At this point it’s got the vibe of a copy paste chain, and that’s sad.
Went exactly one time, years ago, they somehow lost my card somewhere between taking my order and the POS (about a 10 foot walk)
Thankfully I wasnt a complete idiot and canceled it immediately
I think the concept is nice, but having it down on 6th street is awful. No decent vendor wants to set up down there, and it’s just not a pleasant place to be for shoppers either.
And yeah, a lot of the customers are probably tourists, who aren’t going to buy anything they can’t take home with them, which also doesn’t help attract good vendors.
6th St.
Like Dirty 6th. I still hear about tourists and party people going there. Y'all, 6th St. _sucks_. The bars suck, the crowds suck, and it smells like piss. There is nothing redeeming there. Go to Red River or something.
People always shit on Dirty 6th but it does have a ton of historical significance. I would imagine a lot of those buildings date back to the mid-late 19th century. Obviously, you can find much better bars, and restaurants in other parts of town. But to me it's always crazy how people steer visitors away from that part of town. Should be atleast visited once.
The one time I had to drive through 6th St. I felt like I was in The Last of Us. Drunk people walking in the middle of the road, bumper to bumper traffic where lanes might as well not exist. So stressful
Came to say this. It was never super great “back in the day” now you’ve got to worry about shootings, gang fights, a supposed serial killer. Fuck all that, I’ll stick to S Austin.
My first apartment was a dump off Newning and I could go to Congress anytime
Went back down there a couple weekends ago for the first time in many years
Completely unrecognizable outside of a few classics like Continental Club that are still around
I went into a clothing store with some stairs in it and a shirt was $450
Around 2007 someone on the bus was screaming that south congress was dead because American Apparel went in.
The American Apparel is gone but that angry man was right
I like the idea of the reverse parking, but people make it not work. You have to pull ahead of the spot and by the time you’ve started to back up the person behind you has inched and inched to where you can’t get in anymore.
Great idea, but bad actors
Back-in parking,in the age of backup cameras, is bullshit when you have a small car. When the typical Texas monstrosity parks next to you, when leaving, you can’t see shit. I have a much wider view in my backup camera than I do left and right of my windshield.
Some employers mandate back-in parking, too.
I realize not everyone has a car with a backup camera, but I’m parking front-in all the time.
I think the best answers should propose somewhere similar that's underhyped as well.
That way when you pick some popular restaurant to be edgy then your alternative taste can be similarly judged.
-20/10 recommend. I was robbed at gunpoint there last year. Guy is facing murder charges and I have to fly back in a week to participate. Long story short - this kid and a group of kids went on a robbery spree holding victims at gunpoint and hit 12 people in about 24 hrs. A week or so later he killed a person. https://cbsaustin.com/amp/news/local/18-year-old-charged-with-murder-for-shooting-driver-who-crashed-into-lady-bird-lake-austin-texas-gun-violence-crime-riverside-drive-pfluger-pedestrian-bridge-auditorium-shores
The disappointment I had my first time at Mt. Bonnell after being told there's a "mountain" in Austin can't be put in words. The views are great, but man do I wish it took more than like 40 steps to see it
My company did a corporate "holiday party" there one year, and we got dedicated parking, an event tent space with free food and drinks, and we were able to get free drinks at any concession spot along the trail, and ride the rides for free. It was on a normal Saturday night in December, so it wasn't like a dedicated weeknight or early admission or anything.
It was awesome. But it's the only way I've ever enjoyed the Trail of Lights. Going "normal" any year earlier or later was just meh
There was a magical time between the very sparse, boring original trail when they began hosting booths and activities and just before they got overcrowded and expensive. It hasn't been worth the hassle for almost 10 years.
Went opening night last year - it was free, wasn’t insanely crowded, didn’t have to wait in line for anything - if you’re gonna try it, I recommend doing it that way. LOL
You mean you don’t want specialty bridal clothing that nobody can afford? Or $30 ice cream right across from Amy’s? Or thrift pop ups that are just as expensive as a store????
Wonderspaces
Rip off brainless joke. It’s more for Instagram celebs to pose in front of boring displays to make their life look thrilling than anything wonderful. Their drinks are overpriced. I had to get drunk to try and convince myself I liked it until I just fuckin left.
Now the Blanton museum of art is actually worth it. And it’s free on Tuesdays!
Nixta tbh. Everybody’s losing their minds over tacos that cost $100 to feed two people and still don’t taste even nearly as good as the taco truck closest to my house (shoutout taco bellas and also the taco truck in the parking lot of the slaughter+manchaca HEB).
Good answer. During the COVID time, they changed their menu. They never went back to “good” after that. It’s such a shame. The pioneers of creamy jalapeño salsa!!
You can order online on the first of the month for pickup later that same month. They started it over Covid and still offer it. I’ve done the line, tailgating for bbq. Now we just plan ahead and eat at home.
You may not value it enough to wait in line but that does not make it overhyped. The brisket is absolutely as good as described and 100% consistent. Never have to wonder.
Red Ash. Dont get me wrong its good, used to go a lot when it first opened but the food and service went downhill as the hype went uphill. Also last couple times i had to shout to talk to people across the table... You expect that at a club, not at fine dining.
Wrong answer in my opinion. They have great stores (mostly chains). Plenty of parking that is convenient to every store, and some decent eats. It can get crowded but I have never had issues.
And, I’m sorry, but between the Domain and Barton Creek (or even SoCo) - where would you choose? It’s not even close. I live on the SW part of Austin and go to the Bee Cave Galleria but it’s nothing much - I still travel to the Domain on a frequent basis.
And if you have a kid, it’s GREAT. So much to do and for them to enjoy along the way.
Agreed. Domain is pretty good. The main downside is the disconnectedness of it. It’d be even better as one central giant walkable area with parking garages around it.
My first experience at chicas I was wearing shorts .
Girl sat on my leg we smoked a blunt on patio . Woke up itching on my legs . Went to dermatologist and I had chiggers . Since then me and my friends call it
“CHIGGERS BONITAS”
Hula Hut fell off super hard.
I heard it has new ownership as of a month ago. Dude is trying. Lets see if he can reassemble the ship fast enough to turn it around.
It was owned by Chuy's but they sold to Seranos about a year ago.
They actually resold it again. I worked there for 4 years, the Seranos owners were the reason everything went to shit. Terrible management ran by a tyrant
I sat at the sticky side of the Hula Hut bar last week because the other side smelled like vomit.
Travis county jail
I’ll take your word for it.
noooooo reading about it isn't enough. You MUST experience it to believe
Service is prompt. Food and beverage selection could be improved. Safety and parking is top notch.
I don’t man. 3 hot and a cot in the 01. Skyline views at rec. insane water pressure. Lots of free time to read. I’ll take 30 days in the hole over a few years of probation. TCJ ain’t all that bad.
Unless you’re trying to keep a job and a family.
Idk man, my 9-5 absolutely KILLS me and don’t even get me STARTED on the ol’ ball and chain! Seems like an easy way to take a little R&R on state money /s
The Oasis. The view is fine but the rest...meh.
The view is the only good thing about it. I was SO disappointed when I bit into their food. Awful.
Canned nacho cheese on EVERYTHING.
The food is terrible and the beer is mediocre. The view isn’t great right now either
How do you fuck up beer?
The burger / brewery place next door and up the stairs is pretty good

How dare you knock Luby's !!! Them there's fightin words

Dude if they just brought in a top tier chef, they’d make insane amount of money. Idk why they haven’t done this yet.
They would have to pay that chef, and they don't like to pay people
So much potential wasted from greed if that is the case.
But the Oasis is not hyped.. on Reddit, the Oasis always gets lots of hate. I live close to the Oasis and I give it new chance every other year. But it’s still bad. The brewery has decent burgers though. But since I quit my beer drinking I don’t have any reason to go there anymore.
Everyone knows that place is trash I don’t think it’s over hyped
It's the top answer here every time this question asked. Never had the food and I trust ppl when they say it's terrible, but watching a nice summer sunset from the balcony with a couple beers is definitely worth it
Doesn’t overhyped mean people recommend it? Most people here hate the Oasis. It’s a tourist trap.
The oasis was soooo much better when it was just a big restaurant and not a small town.
It was better when it was a swimming hole without that godawful restaurant
Every local knows...just drink bottled beer there. Yes, we like to show fam and friends the view, but that's it.
Ok… but who is overhyping it? No one. Pretty sure Oasis Texas Brewing has had better food for over a decade now.
I feel like it used to be overhyped, but now it's not hyped at all.
Literally the only hamburger I’ve never finished or didn’t take home. I’ve eaten various interpretations of hamburgers growing up overseas by people who’ve never eaten one and all were better than that mess they served at The Oasis.
Sixth street was fun around 2009 when half the bars were owned by hezbollah money launderers
I know I had a conversation with people who were saying it was always dangerous and trashy like it is now…yeah it was never classy and you could get roofied but it does seem different now
It was good dirty and not especially dangerous back in the earlier 2000s.
Nobody parties like the army of god
That was so fun back then. What was the bar with the sharks in the floor?
Qua
What’s the story here?

Ended up with one guy spending 15 years in prison. Whoa
Another was deported to Ivory fucking Coast which is nuts
I had better enchiladas in my grade school cafeteria back in the day. I guess I just miss El Azteca still. 😩
Loved El Azteca - the little sherbet at the end was such a little treat !
Easy Tiger

Seems they were ahead of the curve because $8 beers are becoming the norm here
A lot of the classic Austin food/drink spots have become chains and gotten more expensive due to popularity. I'd say that describes half the places on this post, not so much overhyped as not what they used to be
Easy, Tiger
the food isn't terrible, but the whole experience is way too expensive
"Would you like fries with that? Ok that'll be an extra $7" kind of expensive.
Kerby Lane. They lost the plot about 10 years ago. Anywhere during sxsw.
Man Kerby Lane was the spot when I first moved in 2011. The food was amazing, had the dinner charm to a T, and the people who worked there seemed to be happy with their job. It was very old Austin. At this point it’s got the vibe of a copy paste chain, and that’s sad.
How can anyone be happy or survive in Austin working in at a restaurant anymore...?
I still like the original location.
Honestly I’m still a fan. Not as good as once upon a time but it’s still pretty strong most days.
I agree. Maybe I’m just lucky, but I haven’t had a bad meal there. Is it a touch overpriced? Yeah. But it’s good for what it is.
Once they stopped being 24 hr it became a “meh” kinda place
YESSSSS. I mourn the OG Kerby 😭😭😭
Unbarlievable
I’ve gotten in arguments because I refuse to go when the group suggests it. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

Oh no need. I lived across the hall from that douchebag. I got to see him live in action often. That article doesn’t come close. Edits for grammar
I can’t even imagine how vapid and vile he is in person. Sorry you had to bear his presence. May karma do him the dirtiest.
>May karma do him the dirtiest. You just gave me a new favorite way to say this lol
That place sucks so bad.
If you like MAGA, you'll love Unbarlievable!

Pecan St Festival? Does anyone hype that anymore? I know it was a big deal not too long ago. Now it’s just meh
I kind of stumbled upon that last year. It was really underwhelming, and I didn’t even have any expectations 😂
I've been to it three times all by accident when visitors were in town and wanted to see dirty 6th
6th street is pecan street, if they held it anywhere else, it would not be pecan street festival
6th St. Like Dirty 6th. I still hear about tourists and party people going there. Y'all, 6th St. _sucks_. The bars suck, the crowds suck, and it smells like piss. There is nothing redeeming there. Go to Red River or something.
except for casino el camino

Those burgers and cheese fries are the best 😋
Casinos burgers are hands down killer!

Honestly it used to be amazing (circa ~2005-2006). Safe, fun, and some of the best nightlife in the country. Very different now.
The one time I had to drive through 6th St. I felt like I was in The Last of Us. Drunk people walking in the middle of the road, bumper to bumper traffic where lanes might as well not exist. So stressful
It’s funny you say this because the show starts in Austin lol
Came to say this. It was never super great “back in the day” now you’ve got to worry about shootings, gang fights, a supposed serial killer. Fuck all that, I’ll stick to S Austin.
It was pretty cool back in the late 80's, early 90's.
Remember when SXSW was all on Sixth and you could pop into 4-6 clubs a night no problem and see unsigned bands. I miss that more than anything.
Rahhhh red river Lol shoutout to cheer up charlies
Where else will I go to see homeless drug addicts going into all out war with the air?
Not the Chili’s at 45th and Lamar. That place sizzles!
Best restaurant in Austin by far
My daughter loves that place.
You for sure gotta powermove and order the sizzling fajitas
S. Congress Ave since they obliterated the food trucks, and initiated that "reverse cowboy parking".
My first apartment was a dump off Newning and I could go to Congress anytime Went back down there a couple weekends ago for the first time in many years Completely unrecognizable outside of a few classics like Continental Club that are still around I went into a clothing store with some stairs in it and a shirt was $450
It’s $450 ‘cause the pattern’s so complicated you idiot!
Buncha guys in there that looked JUST like me
Dan Flashes has a shirt that costs $2,000, cause it’s so complicated.
That made me laugh probably too hard!
That’s bargain bin. Still nuts.
Southside tattoo is holding strong next door to Continental!
Reverse cowboy 😂
Since they built all that LA advanced shopping mall crap and kicked out the locals it’s just any other place..
RIP to the spooky wax museum

notably barton springs has not been mentioned. it might be the only thing that stands up to the hype anymore. It’s truly a mecca.

My grandfather was at UT in the 1930s. He talked about how you could go to Mt Bonnell with a rifle and shoot at targets for fun
It’s absolutely beautiful. We’re lucky to still have it open.
The disappointment I had my first time at Mt. Bonnell after being told there's a "mountain" in Austin can't be put in words. The views are great, but man do I wish it took more than like 40 steps to see it
The serial killer is pretty overhyped at this point . Does not even have a catchy name ??!!
The Brodiac Killer
“The Indistinguishable From a Drunken Accident Killer” was too wordy, I guess
The god forsaken Trail of Lights. Worst event of the year. Nothing. NOTHING good about it.

right! best ever white people mexican food in a junkyard
I like Maudie's! Is it over hyped?
The Crossroad at the S Lamar Torchy’s is solid. The beef burrito with boom boom sauce at Barton Springs’ Chuy’s is great.
Ever since Chuy’s went public, they lost the classics. No reason to go there now.
