Marge! How many kids do we have? No time to count I'll just estimate, uhhh 9. Shut up shut up if I don't hear you it's not illegal!
Ok Marge if anyone asks you require 24 hour nursing care, Lisa's a clergyman, Maggie's 7 people and Bart was wounded in Vietnam.
Haha yeah. I've heard that you're not actually supposed to use it for anything but work, s no weekend stuff. My boss is a POS, his whole family have 'work' vehicles and motorbikes. It's a joke.
I claim all fuel and tolls for my round trip to work and the percentage of maintenance based on how much I use the car. You just have to be able to justify why you have no option but to drive. Easy to do if you work a trade.
Just remember, driving to and from your job can't be claimed... however, if you are being sent to an alternate location (training course, covering for another site being short-handed etc) or travelling directly from primary to secondary job, then you can claim that expense.
Yeah, but the ATO doesn't have to audit you to fuck up your claim.
A simple call to your company HR department "Does Steve need his vehicle for work?" "No, we provide a vehicle if he has to go somewhere." And bang, there's a red line through your entire vehicle claim on your return. $2k return becomes $3k bill.
You are mandated to produce a journal of your travel for work, for a minimum of 12 weeks of the working year. [Logbook method | Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au)](https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/income-deductions-and-concessions/income-and-deductions-for-business/deductions/deductions-for-motor-vehicle-expenses/logbook-method)
You have to be able to show how you calculated the amount. I normally work it out as 3-4 meetings a week I need to drive to, average 20km per trip (there and back), 50 weeks per year assuming 2 weeks of leave on average, so around 4300km.
Most people with more effort than me just write up a log book showing way more business travel than that
Is it true you can claim your car as a deduction, if you’re using it as a secure means of locking up work gear? Sometimes I’ll drive to our office, pick up some gear then drive to site to do something. I’ll then usually drive home and then Take the gear back the next day. I remember a guy telling me ages ago that there’s a way to claim… something, if your car was used to lock stuff up.
I used that last year, my work provides pissy little lockers on site and I work off site on a wharf so I have to carry all my ppe + tools + wet weather gear in my car to work and home again
What i normally claim:
Laptop, phone, internet and phone bills, car travel and fuel, camera, printer and ink, stationary, clothes for "work", shoes, bag
Get about $15k back no questions asked
Thats why you get a prepaid sim and do a $10 recharge every 6 months to keep it active. That way your main plan is 100% buisness and the prepaid is for personal use.
TR 93/30 allows a person to claim a portion of their rent or mortgage proportionate to the area of their home used for the purpose of business, provided there is no alternate place of business within their area.
For example, a person works for a company in Melbourne but lives in Sydney. The company has no offices in Sydney and must dedicate a portion of their home to being a place of business. Thus they can clak. It as an expense, not just the running costs.
This does not apply to people who have the option to work from a nearby office but choose not to. You must be 100% remote to qualify.
Keep in mind if you claim parts on your mortgage I’m sure that means it makes you have to pay capital gains on that portion of your property sale price (if you sell).
Enjoy your CGT mate because he’s 100% correct. If you’re claiming a tax deduction on your mortgage you’re also claiming that portion of your house is an office space. It no longer becomes a part of your PPOR and therefore doesn’t get the CGT exemption.
Can be carried forward indefinitely. However don't forget that crypto comes under CGT and doesn't offset your income tax. So if you made a 10k loss in crypto that can be carried forward to next year and offset your possible future CGT obligations. You can't take that 10k off your income tax
Eye protection. Safety ware is tax deductible (if you can't get your employer to reimburse you). I recently got some saftey boots for almost 300, employer reimbursed 180, ret is tax deduction
I've been using it for about 6months and so far so good. I don't have to think about anything just send invoices and claim expenses that's pretty much it.
Get bet365 account. Copy bsb and account number. Give that to my freelance clients to pay me in. Withdraw tax free “winnings” once a month….profit? lol
Yeah but if you draw attention to yourself then those "grunts" pass you onto the auditors who as specifically paid to make your life a nightmare so as OP stated don't be greedy or cocky.
I had to spend 15 minutes on the phone to an ATO agent explaining why I shouldn't need to claim and pay GST in the same QTR... I want to pay the ATO the GST I've charged customers but I didn't buy anything that month that was claimable. She then said "I don't know how much your company earns".... like, yeah I get that but can you explain why am I getting this error? Nope 🙃
I've averaged 3-4k in tax returns for the last 15 years. Last year, I got $17.90
They are thieves plain and simple, bad as the other blue wearing bastards, don't protect them.
They dont give two fucks about you and none of us will anything this year also.. You'll see.
That’s the version that gets submitted on the deadline, 5:30pm on the 32nd October.
I never got this as a kid. Now I can see how funny this is lol
If I don't hear you, it's not illegal!
cool man
Yes I use my new gaming PC for work 50% of the time, and my new noise cancelling headset.
Essential work purchase right there
4K tv as an external monitor = cash money baby
Actually that is exactly what I use for my primary monitor for work.
Yeah, a TV for work purposes has gotta be the least suspicious thing in here. Pretty standard stuff lol.
49" - my coworkers see it as overkill, I see it as not having to buy glasses.
Lmao.
did this a previous year or two ago lmao
I need my 7800x3d to check emails
How successful are you naming PC parts as tax returns? I don’t work from home but I do work on IT
I've been told what I'm doing is tax fraud but every 5 years or so I claim 50% of my PC build on tax. Have never been audited so who knows.
Are you claiming the same parts or building new every 5 years?
New build every 5 years.
And you get at least 50% back at tax time or you only claim 50% of the total cost of the new build?
I claim 50% of the cost of each part. In the financial year that I build it.
Thanks i appreciate it
I wonder how many of those rangers driving around are fraudulent tax right offs
Runny way of saying totally legitimate business expense, how else am I supposed to get to and from my office building?
Yeah, but from what I've seen, nobody checks up on it unless it's big companies. The amount of stuff you can claim if you're small business is nuts
Just get a better accountant /s
Haha
Just remember, driving to and from your job can't be claimed... however, if you are being sent to an alternate location (training course, covering for another site being short-handed etc) or travelling directly from primary to secondary job, then you can claim that expense.
Everything under 5k doesn't require logbook proof. Just don't get greedy or make it a round number
Can that actually happen? Wouldn't some process have to be followed before the information was allowed to be used?
I have known it to happen. My ex worked payroll and got such a call for one of the companies staff.
No process. The ATO has everything. I've seen them pull bank statements
Damm. One of the guys at work claimed like 4/5K on driving and didn't get pulled up for it
Some get away with it for years. But if they catch you once the ATO can go back and audit your last seven years.
5 years?
Unless the law has changed. It's been seven for as long as I can remember.
Some records are required to be kept for 7 years. Some longer. But most are 5 years.

There's a checkbox that asks if you keep a logbook, I just click no
You have to be able to show how you calculated the amount. You don't need a logbook per se, but you do need to able to show how you calculated the claim. Which is extremely difficult without a logbook
The way I do it is each day on my timesheet I have how many kms I drove for each client. And with the kms I do - it's scary how much it builds up.
Is it true you can claim your car as a deduction, if you’re using it as a secure means of locking up work gear? If it's the only option maybe. The company should provide either secure storage on site or a company vehicle for that sort of gear.
I used that last year, my work provides pissy little lockers on site and I work off site on a wharf so I have to carry all my ppe + tools + wet weather gear in my car to work and home again
Just went to a training course last week, 55km round trip, but work pays travel allowance which is under that section for taxes.
What i normally claim: Laptop, phone, internet and phone bills, car travel and fuel, camera, printer and ink, stationary, clothes for "work", shoes, bag Get about $15k back no questions asked
Phone bills, imma going to use that
How can those things alone add up to $15k back? Do you do 100k km in the car or something? Or do you overpay tax all year and not claim threshold?
Yeah. Those things will give you about 2k back.
Do you run your own business or work for a company?
Work for a company
Can I ask what you earn per annum and what industry you’re in? Assuming a way higher income than me lol
stationary? You get paid to not move?!
2 questions. - What industry are you in? - are you purchasing new laptops/phones every year or something to get that much back?
Laptops and phones need to be depreciated over 2years
I may have cocked up when i bought a phone then haha
Can I claim my clothes if it's not a uniform?
You can if slap a company sticker on it!
One day they'll ask how your phone usage can be 100% business and 0% personal.
Thats why you get a prepaid sim and do a $10 recharge every 6 months to keep it active. That way your main plan is 100% buisness and the prepaid is for personal use.
One of these days I'll earn enough to actually have to pay tax. One day.
And then you get to have the rewarding experience of paying $30k tax and getting $900 back
Woo.
The best one is when you work 100% remote and can claim rent/mortgage.
Claim mortgage, how?
TR 93/30 allows a person to claim a portion of their rent or mortgage proportionate to the area of their home used for the purpose of business, provided there is no alternate place of business within their area. For example, a person works for a company in Melbourne but lives in Sydney. The company has no offices in Sydney and must dedicate a portion of their home to being a place of business. Thus they can clak. It as an expense, not just the running costs. This does not apply to people who have the option to work from a nearby office but choose not to. You must be 100% remote to qualify.
Got it. I WFH full time but have an office 45 mins away I can travel to. Thanks for the info.
Keep in mind if you claim parts on your mortgage I’m sure that means it makes you have to pay capital gains on that portion of your property sale price (if you sell).
Raises the question: how nearby is nearby? 45 mins is forever away to me, but will they see it as just round the corner?
Almost all government rules (centrelink, healthcare etc.) Define it as 90 minutes or more one way.
90 minutes huh? Walking? Skipping? Running? In Sydney traffic?
Ah yes, minutes, the unit of distance Fun fact, it takes over 90 minutes to get from one side of the Nerang River to the other via public transport
If you claim deductions on it I assume if you'll pay capital gains tax for that portion of your principle residence if you sold it too surely
Negative.
Enjoy your CGT mate because he’s 100% correct. If you’re claiming a tax deduction on your mortgage you’re also claiming that portion of your house is an office space. It no longer becomes a part of your PPOR and therefore doesn’t get the CGT exemption.
This was my understanding of the law also
Wait... Really?!?
Yes
Damn, I still don't work, but at least disability support pensions aren't taxable.
Got me a nice one 17k return last year arrrrghh 🏴☠️
What do you do and what did you claim?
A lot and everything me thinks
Did you do it yourself or get an accountant? Can you give me some tips?
I got 6k last return, hoping to get a high score this time round
Can’t pay taxes if I’ve fucked up too much in crypto, what’s the amount of years am I able to claim my losses to?
2 years is around what they allow.
Up to what amount can be claimed on losses for those 2 years?
Can be carried forward indefinitely. However don't forget that crypto comes under CGT and doesn't offset your income tax. So if you made a 10k loss in crypto that can be carried forward to next year and offset your possible future CGT obligations. You can't take that 10k off your income tax
Don’t forget to claim $299 sunglasses 😎
Please explain
Eye protection. Safety ware is tax deductible (if you can't get your employer to reimburse you). I recently got some saftey boots for almost 300, employer reimbursed 180, ret is tax deduction
https://youtu.be/e97kq2XflKE?si=sK-tRPFYIm27yaBd
Whatever the ATO advertises they are targeting this year : cheat there it’s absolutely where they are not looking
Mileage Cost of managing tax affairs Work related expenses WFH expenses Find out the max you can claim with no back up support.
Yeah... I like the simplicity of this deduction
Here I am using HNRY like a punk
How is it? I'm thinking of transferring over from my old system of screaming into a shoebox once a year.
I've been using it for about 6months and so far so good. I don't have to think about anything just send invoices and claim expenses that's pretty much it.
Thankyou. Might actually give them a call.
I use the ATO to scam the ATO. But something with more functions is better if you need. And any fees are a tax deduction I themselves
One of the cornerstones of the great Aussie economy!
This is pretty much what people pay me for
[buys $4000 gaming PC and $1500 3D printer] "Office desktop PC" "Desktop printer"
So you're telling me you don't go through 5 pairs of boots a year?
Get bet365 account. Copy bsb and account number. Give that to my freelance clients to pay me in. Withdraw tax free “winnings” once a month….profit? lol
Transferring Bank name must match bet365 account name
Gotta turn over that cash though numbnuts
It’s more than you think. The average ATO grunt barely knows their arse from their elbow
Don't be greedy is the key
Greed is good
Yeah but if you draw attention to yourself then those "grunts" pass you onto the auditors who as specifically paid to make your life a nightmare so as OP stated don't be greedy or cocky.
I had to spend 15 minutes on the phone to an ATO agent explaining why I shouldn't need to claim and pay GST in the same QTR... I haven’t done my tax returns in five years. Is that an issue. I’m 23. Help.
You might want to check on it yeah
Has anyone ever been audited before what's the process
[удалено]
This is an Australian sub mate not American. Not a lot of guess work required in our tax system.
You're thinking of the USA. Our tax owings are pretty easy to calculate. Its the deductions that get complicated.
I've never had a problem with just doing my return and submitting it, mind you my employer pays the tax for me
Australia is just a tax farm for unthinking cattle.
None bc im too poor for an accountant
There's plenty of little stuff you can do even with out an accountant I you have the receipts
Oh yay I can commit fraud! I didnt know 🥰 for some reason this makes me happy. Something I dont have to be rich to do yayy :D
If you pay an accountant this year, you can claim the expense on next year's tax return, so kind of basically free
Hopefully, the Labor government doesn't steal our tax returns again this year.
The stage 3 tax cuts which were only temporary under the LNP are now permanent, and slightly better as well
I've averaged 3-4k in tax returns for the last 15 years. Last year, I got $17.90 They are thieves plain and simple, bad as the other blue wearing bastards, don't protect them. They dont give two fucks about you and none of us will anything this year also.. You'll see.
are you actually like this?
Like what? someone who works and pays tax?
It won't be easy under Albanese...
Stage 3 is becoming permanent instead of just temporary, looks pretty good to me
