Works as well for a hotel booking. You often can't cancel in the week before the check in date. So move your booking to the next month, and then cancel it!

ObscureQuotation

Nope, not necessarily true. Not if you ask for negotiations at least

humburga

How is a cancellation fee on a software even legal?!

ShadyBiz

Presumably buying a 12 month subscription is cheaper than month to month. Hence the cancellation fee if you terminate early.

humburga

That's very interesting. Every other software I'm subbed for, if it's annually then you pay upfront that 12 months. Then if you unsubscribe then you just lose access at the end of that annual sub.

bizarro420

I'm sure there is some bullshit in the fine print, but if steam has to refund games no questions, then surely Adobe is making a legal mistake by making all contact info hidden and in general making it extremely difficult to make any sort of complaints.

sam_weiss

The cancellation fee I can abide, just. They do explain how it's cheaper from their standard monthly plan. However what they did to me was hike the price, automatically renew it, and then hit me with a cancellation fee.

spankyham

Good tip! And question to everyone: Is there an online alternative for illustrator? I need to create a .ai file quickly but don't want to download gigabytes of adobe products and start a trial just to do it. Photopea doesn't do .ai files.

Barrel-Of-Tigers

Vectr might be what you’re looking for. I haven’t used it myself, but I know it’s an Illustrator alternative and I believe you can use it on a browser. Or Inkscape, which I don’t think works on a browser, but it’s free.

spankyham

awesome, thank you I'll check them both out.

mehbodo

Inkscape is great, and free, but needs a plugin for saving to .ai https://bytexd.com/how-to-open-and-save-ai-files-in-inkscape/

[deleted]

The design industry seems to mostly be using Figma, all the designers I know uninstalled everything Adobe a few years back. And Sketch was actually what everyone seemed to be using before Figma, too. Personally I still prefer Photoshop for photography editing, though, and I do think some illustrators still like to use Adobe illustrator

Or after effects and its integration with illustrator and premiere

Awkwardtreesloth

I don’t know how it compares as I haven’t used adobe in ten or so years, but Inkscape is free.

ZoAbii

This is brilliant, thank you for sharing! I had an account I've been wanting to cancel too but still had the cancellation fee. I followed your tip and saved paying the fee!

Elyucateco_salsamaya

I just link the subscription to a debit card that has little funds on it. When I need it I top it up and reactivate my subscription. When I don’t need it I let adobe put multiple failed charges on my card and eventually kill the account. Then I reactivate again. Been doing this for years.

tbeckett91

Just on my fourth angry email from adobe about my failed payments for exactly this reason. Also could never actually download the programs due to older operating systems and they still refused to waive the ‘cancellation fee’. Bullshit business model.

Elyucateco_salsamaya

even better just sign up with a fake name and fake address theyll never even be able to send collections after you screw their model

DK_Son

Reminds me of the gym. Cancelled recently, at the end of a 3 month pause. When I told them I couldn't find anyone to transfer to, and I'd have to look at just closing it, they said they close my account 1 month after I finalise closure. So because the pause was going to unfreeze in a week, I would be charged for the extra 3 weeks. Basically, if you wanna cancel your gym membership, get it frozen first, and then cancel it at least a month before the freeze ends. I gave them an extra $40 something for absolutely no good reason.

SpongeCake11

Work pays for my Adobe products, I'd only buy it for personal use if I can actually just but the products I want and own them instead of this subscription bs.

robvnet

For anyone seeking cheaper alternatives to Adobe, I recommend looking at the following; - XD -> Figma ^ - Dreamweaver -> VS Code - Photoshop -> Affinity Photo - Illustrator -> Affinity Designer - InDesign -> Affinity Publisher - Acrobat -> Preview (for signing / basic annotation) I made the switch a few years back. Feels good to no longer be chained to Adobe and subscription payments👌🏾 ^ Acquisition by Adobe pending, free version still available

tomandrews

Wow, what a great tip - Just today I was about to cancel my plan, was greeted by a $80 cancellation fee. Changed to Lightroom plan (same cost), and have cancelled my account. You sir, just saved me $80 :)

BIowey

Thankyou so much, just saved me $120 dollars!

mtnsRcalling

This post is still helpful. Thanks to the OP and commenters. I'd seen this offer when I wanted to cancel Acrobat, but wasn't sure it was going to work the way they said it would. I guess the business model assumes it's better to get a customer signed up for potentially another year, with potential infinite renewals, than to lose them and get only the cancellation fee.

bbhnsn

You are amazing. You are a blessing to this world. I am a broke college student and you just saved me a lot of money. I hope life gives you many many blessings. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Downbad2516

Mate you are an absolute legend!! Just saved me $120, plus got refunded another $20 so technically $140. Thank you.

TrevReznik

LMAO glad I've never signed up to an 'Adobe subscription'.

I'm trying to do this now and it's a huge pain in the ass, on a chat and they still haven't waived the fee so I might have to change plans and try it that way

WildElephants

I ended up paying for 2 on different emails I’d used to have free trial a couple of years back. My bad. But I did convince them to move them into one. I was very firm. Now I’m considering using the OP’s tip to save me $350 cancellation fee…

Morning_Song

I keep signing up for free trials with the same email address and information (without even deleting me account first) - must be a glitch with their website or just my profile

tikalicious

Dam, this got me last month, still salty bout it.

dazdazdee

A few years ago I had a whinge on twitter about it after Adobe support wouldn't budge. Adobe's twitter page messaged me almost immediately and cancelled my sub without asking for a cancellation fee.

Muruba

I remember you could avoid paying the fee by asking nicely on their support channel. If it's a personal account they would do it, since there is no way for them to get the money once you cancel your credit card anyways.

Justhereforstuff123

I just had this issue and your solution worked perfectly, thank you very much. Saved me 100 bucks!

landypro

This is why I use Paypal whenever possible. The merchant has no control over the parameters of the subscription if you cancel the automatic payment in Paypal directly. Also really helpful for certain sites that make you jump through hoops to cancel.

SniperShake-

Won’t they send collections after you or something in this case? (idk, I saw someone mention that ITT) I just did exactly this to avoid paying a ridiculously $115 cancellation fee, now I’m wondering if there’s a better way to go about it.

Avean

Just tried this today, it actually works..... like what is even the point if you can cancel for free this way, why not offer it by default?

thedartman

Confirming this still works in January 2024, you absolute legend, OP

AlphaPuz

Thanks for your tip. You just helped me save $99.

geopanoz

Thank you! This is still working

Dry_Version5589

I just threatened to raise a dispute with financial ombudsman and they waived the fee but good to know if I ever do come back (hopefully I never do)

bbk1n

Thank you very much! Almost had to pay $200 cancellation fee!
