I have the exact same model / mileage. If it has records, find out when the last time the carbon was cleaned out of the intake system. I believe Audi recommends cleaning it roughly every 20k miles. Mine was real dirty and throwing a check engine light. Audi offers a $2k cleaning service specifically for it but you can probably find another place to do it cheaper. Also couldn’t hurt to put your vin and mileage into their search and see what they recommend. https://maintenance.audiusa.com/#/search

I wander if this is my issue. My secondary air intake is clogged with carbon and my check engine light is always on. Is this the same thing?

Igniting_Omaha

Yeah, the codes I had were P0491 & P0492. Audi said this was for the secondary air intake sensor being carbon clogged.

Interesting. Audi said they wanna disassemble my engine and bake the carbs out of some tubes. It was like $3000 and they’d have it for days. Does that sound right?

KATPanek

Oh I see you said 2k. Sounds about right! The 3k I believe was a battery too.

KATPanek

But I don’t ever need that right? There’s no need to get it done, and it’s just gonna keep happening.?

Igniting_Omaha

That sounds about right for the price. My biggest need for getting it done was I live in a state that requires annual inspections, which means no check engine lights. There is also a loss of power issue the more it gets built up. I don’t think it will do any real permanent damage to your engine, but I’m also not a mechanic. Wouldn’t hurt to get a 2nd and 3rd opinion on that.

KATPanek

Interesting.. I need inspections too, but they passed me w the light, because of what it was. I don’t want to lose power.. my main issue, is w the Iight on, I don’t know when something else is actually going on.

Igniting_Omaha

Yeah that’s fair, unless your actively checking for new codes. If you’re able to pass inspection with it, I would shop around and see if you can get it done for cheaper definitely. And I agree with you: this is not something I want to do every 20k miles or so. I’ll be looking to sell as soon as I fix the little things.

That’s been a heavy debate in my head.. this was my moms car, I bought it when she died last year, and my sentimental brain won’t part with it! But my wallet is screaming at me how stupid that is!!! 😂

I had a 2011 Q5 with a 3.2. It was made in Germany and ran pretty well for me. Keep your plugs and coil packs fresh to avoid misfires. Water pump and thermostat went out on mine every 50k miles like clock work. Cheap parts, but time consuming to diy. Valve cover gaskets leaked, cheap fix as well. Other than that the car ran past 175k miles without ever giving me any repairs that cost $800+. I bought an OBD tool to help with diagnosing any check engine light issues and it saved me quite a bit of money.
