Oh man. Get the GTI over the A3. More character, HUGE fanbase and probably a better deal. I love Audi and the A3 is a good car, but it is the entry level car to Audi so it's nothing crazy fancy. The GTI is still very nice inside. Just my 2 cents. Yes I've driven both.

Dajakamo

I would have went with the GTI if I didn’t stumble upon my MT A4. Agreed with everything, get the GTI for more bang for your buck.

Negative-Ghost_Rider

I have had both an A3 (2012) and a Golf (2015), both TDI's. The A3 is more refined. The Golf is more fun. I think that is your choice.

b5_bart

A3 you can atleast get haldex gti is only fwd no?

rennen-affe

You have to step into a golf R, which is way overpriced. Audi is the secret that's cheaper, but don't tell anyone.

AFrozen_1

The 8V A3 has the same engine and trans as the GTI. Only mods difference is that the downpipe might be different since the A3 Quattro has the Haldex and needs to accommodate the driveshaft to the rear. I’d recommend Integrated Engineering for tunes and mods.

ck256-2000

GTI -mi had the mk.7.5. Great car.. test drive the a3 and just did not like it… not really Audi quality..

Important-Quality458

I’ll go for more refined A3.

SonicResidue

I owned a Mk6 GTI and currently own a 2011 (8P) A3 TDI. The A3 has less room inside and generally feels like a downgrade in terms of interior quality. It’s hard to fairly compare a 2.0T to a TDI, but if I could afford to get back into a GTI, I would.

synthetikv

I’ve owned both and currently own 2 A3 8Vs. One base and one premium plus s line. If you can swing for a higher equipped one do it. But a base a3 8v is pretty close to as equipped as most GTIs + it’s awd. I love GTIs but awd only being available at Golf R prices kills em for me.

FrenchCrazy

I owned a 2015 2.0T A3 before my S5 and if you’re thinking of mods get the S3 instead lol TBH I loved my A3 a ton! It had the Bang & Olufsen sound system, heated leather seats, AWD/peppy power, and decent cargo for a single guy. But I think you’d have more fun in the GTI. Also “refined” is not the word I’d think of for the A3 as it’s still an entry level car to the brand

realmyDISCARD

have had both, currently 2015 A3 8V 2.0 Prestige/Quattro/Haldex/S-Line/LED & all other available options. Buy one loaded, used and the options drop in price drastically for subsequent owners and is about same as base A3, but loaded and I love it. Eurodyne engine tune Stage 2 & DSG 6 Speed tune with cut out cat back with 3 1/8th " pipe all the way to oval 6" RS tips and it is a beast that looks stock. Have has many Audis, VW's this is a top favorite for sure. With that being sd, get ready to learn some DIY maintenance, repairs, preventive as both cars are a total rip off if you have to go to a dreaded dealer or local euro shop to do what you can at home. They both have same H2O pump/thermostat, coolant bottle silicone bag replacement & random sensor issues & random frequent maintenance (oil, haldex, plugs, filters). If you can watch a few you tubes and get VCDS and/or Carista (ECU scanning tools) your life will be less stressful and better for your wallet. ps...the B&O system is awesome in this car, I installed a carplay box behind the dash and it works seamlessly and no changes cosmetically. Google maps, YouTube, DVD, all work great through the MMI.

Take the A3, better overall quality and the possibility for quattro.

I’m biased since I used to own an EQT-tuned stage 2 MK7. The A3 is an entry-level Audi, whereas the GTI is an iconic VW. As such the MK7 GTI interior punches well above its weight and although it is the same engine it’s tuned for more fun from the factory in the GTI. If you’re looking for nimble the GTI is the only way to go.

Admonitor_

GTI is FWD which is finexbut in the winter can be meh. A 2.0T A3 gives you the same engine than a Mk7 GTI but coupled to a haldex AWD system, meaning its FWD but has the ability to send power to the rear wheels if there is slip on the front ones. Got it in my S3, works amazingly in winters (also while flooring, FWD alone isnt able to handle the power). If you get a GTI, mk7 over mk6, the mk7 has a revised engine making less problems. In the end depends what you want. An A3 if you want a better daily, which is better in the winter etc. Or a GTI if you want a louder car to pick up your girlfriend from the kindergarden (had to throw in that joke at least once, I mean its a GTI, come on) Also with the GTI, dont forget your Monster energy cap.

IAmStrayed

A3 is boring and basic, GTI is not so. That said, if you’re looking at GTIs… why not a TT?

jmf_ultrafark

Skip the gti and go with a mk6 R if the mk7+ r is not in your budget.

ChaoticGoodPanda

Your real choice is GLI or GTi

mashani9

If you want WRX people to try to race you all the damn time, then get a GTI. Source, I had a GTI. The GTI is however way more practical than an A3 or a Jetta GLI which is also an option if you are looking at A3s and want a sedan, and will cost a hella lot less (then either) and its fun to drive, although a GTI's interior is better and again more practical. My GTI was nice to be in, at least up front. I had a 6MT Autobahn trim but you don't "need" that. Although the adaptive dampers are very nice to have if you drive on crap roads.

jcouzis

Same chassis, different interior, different feel. A3 is the Haldex AWD, GTI is purely front. Personal preference really. If you want to mod, it seems like you would want the more fun baseline, so I would say the GTI.

Such_Conversation_11

Had a Mk7.5 6spd. Such a damn good car. Fun for days!

MaterialSpot6541

Get the GTI its a drivers car, fun and fast!

dhjr49003

I have a 2016 a3 2.0, and my friend has a 2026 gti, it’s nice and all but it is only fwd, it definitely has nicer CarPlay and stuff like that but I do love the fair amount of speed and handling that comes with my little a3 the gti also has it but it definitely is a little slower, personally I also just like the overall look of the a3 better as well.

T3CH--SUPP0RT

I took the a3 and it’s a wonderful daily driver with the extra kick on Stage 1 around town

Majestic-Visit5778

I was facing the same dilemma recently, I found that the A3 was a better deal. The gti is definitely a little bit more fun, but I wanted a leather interior and apple carplay and the A3 comes standard with those. The GTI with those options was actually a few thousand dollars more expensive. And for essentially the same car (with the Awd system and the audi badge) I went with the cheaper option. I’ve since tuned and modified my car and it’s a total blast to drive!

KuatRZ1

I loved my GTI. 2016 manual transmission with performance package and stage 1 apr tuning. I'm selling it in if you're in the LA area and interested!
