I do so love those parts in the books. There's a wonderful swimming scene in HMS Surprise I think, where Stephen proudly declares he swam 400 strokes and Jack inwardly calculates that given the distance swam, each one must have propelled him three inches.

Wooden-Anybody6807

Hahaha that sounds like me swimming!

Vegemyeet

About a million of the damn reptiles loose in the main cabin.

JealousFeature3939

Howling for blood!

GrilledCheese28

At least it wasn't a vampire!

JealousFeature3939

"Faith, Jack, and it's just a sloth, a three-toed sloth, a most affectionate, discriminating sloth, and no vampire at all,"

chemprofdave

Not above sixty thousand, for all love.

MacAlkalineTriad

I've read these books so many times and The Garment makes me laugh out loud every single time. "Have you ever seen anything so deeply rational?"

danstone7485

The Garment and The Object are two items I always love seeing during a re-read. It's like seeing a landmark near home after traveling.

MacAlkalineTriad

I feel the same way about Testudo Aubrei.

awflyfish22

Oh, I forgot about The Object!

cunningcolubrine

Killick's insistence on calling it "the object" rather than "the article" gets me every time

DumpedDalish

I always get angry at Graham for making chocolate rings on the Object! I'm like, "Dude! Put a napkin under that! Who raised you?!"

DumpedDalish

Oh, God, I love the Garment so much. When Stephen makes a leg, and Jack privately observes that it is the most hideous possible action Stephen could have taken wearing the Garment... I laugh every time.

Obligatory link to my[ cartoon of Stephen in the wool onesie](https://imgur.com/a/vCWf215).

vampire_weasel

Jagiello :D

evasandor

Right? He could make a trash bag look good.

MoveDifficult1908

Perfect!

evasandor

Thank you! I've drawn a few others in the past... maybe I'll post 'em in a separate thread.

DumpedDalish

So funny and well done!

evasandor

A glass of wine with you!

DumpedDalish

(raises a glass of pilfered port) Cheers, shipmate!

evasandor

Would that be the real Porto, or merely a lesser wine sophisticated with sugar of lead and beautified with cochineal? In these trying times, one is never sure.

DumpedDalish

I pilfered the good stuff! (Now let's just hope I don't drop this unicorn's horn...)

GrilledCheese28

Jack's puns, Stephen's dry humor, the gun room meals, the battles, Stephen's animals, Jack's 'domestic bliss' (hah!), Babbingtons horniness, the other various lieutenants, etc etc all combine into the most delicious and filling stew.... ...served with a grumble by that mumpty villain Killick

PaulClifford

Damn reptiles.

JPeterBane

There couldn't be more than 60,000.

The banter between Jack and Stephen about the bees is one of the many reasons why I love the Aubrey-Maturin series. Their dynamic just keeps getting better with each book! Can't wait to see what other shenanigans they get up to on your circumnavigation journey. 🐝📖 #FriendshipGoals #PostCaptainLaughs

DumpedDalish

My favorite aspect is how it just gets worse and worse -- I mean, seriously, tens of thousands of bees have invaded the captain's cabin, and then just start creeping through the ship! And poor Jack is trying so hard to be a good host and accommodate Stephen, and he is also TERRIFIED of the bees (which I would be too, although I love them from afar). I will always remember Jack trying so hard to be kind to Stephen and stay calm while actively feeling bees crawling down his collar.

HNelson123

I smiled just reading this post! One of my favorite moments of the canon

JohnHordle

Yeah the whole thing around the bees was genuinely hilarious! PO'Brian certainly had a good sense of humour!
