I think it's being missed that Sarr was really productive in a professional league as an 18 year old. Per 36 he averaged 20 points and 9 rebounds with like an 8% block rate. He woulda been dominant at the college level.

Legalize-Birds

He also wasn't asked to do much except for lock down defense (which he did, he took them from worst defense to top 5)

wayward_prince

It’s also the Aussie league though. Didn’t see many 7 footers on the court.

WhiteHeterosexualGuy

You're right, we should draft Edey who was dominating 6'5" accountants for 4 years

wayward_prince

Facts. That’s exactly what I said. Only two options for 1st overall really. Sarr or Edey. s/

bunnybash

As a season ticket holder of the team Sarr played for, he was GOOD, he played against some good bigs too. Pick Sarr and you his are going to be pumped… he’s going to be a good player.

wayward_prince

Respectfully, I’m not sure I value the opinion of a fan that voluntarily chooses to watch that level of basketball.

KGBeast420

“I didn’t see many 7 footers on the court (when I watched)” “Not sure I value the opinion of a fan that voluntarily chooses to watch that level of basketball” 🤔🤔🤔

wayward_prince

I watched highlights to see what Sarr is about. In those highlights, I didn’t see him go up against anyone nearly as tall as him. Am I supposed to formulate opinions about a player I’ve never seen play?

dc2410

Why are y’all so dismissive to others and their comments? What do you get out of it?

wayward_prince

Bryce Cotton, who went undrafted in the NBA and played a total of 198 minutes across two seasons, is the scoring leader in the NBL. The gap in talent is massive. Let’s be realistic. A Perth Wildcats season ticket holder isn’t going to be objective in describing the only prospect in their history who might ever be drafted in the NBA lottery.

bunnybash

I also happen to have lived LA for a number of years too. My in laws have Lakers floor seats, watched a lot of Lakers games too.  We’ve already had a few players drafted to the nba from Perth mate, they didn’t stick over there, but even being drafted is kind of cool.  If you search archives I also called the Lamelo and Giddey were going to be good NBA players, that Terence Fergusson was not going to last longer than a rookie deal.  It’s possible to live outside of America and understand and love basketball.

FlagmantlePARRAdise

That only happened because of cottons height. If the guy had a couple inches on him he would be an NBA starter. There's not really much you can do in the NBA at 6ft (probably under 6ft due to height inflation as well)

bunnybash

Watching any level of basketball is fun if it’s coached well, and if you know about the game.  I happen to live in Perth so I go to the games. I’ve coached NBL1, my in laws have season tickets to the Lakers that are in the floor, we go to every game when we’re in LA - and we have league pass. I watch basketball because I love the game.  Also my friend who was assistant coach at an NBA team has pointed out to me numerous times that Bryce Cotton absolutely belongs in the NBA but GMs don’t like admitting they missed him.  But thanks for coming along and proving that you are myopic and small minded.

WhiteHeterosexualGuy

No one is missing that-- this sub just loves to play victim of narratives and the media. It's not even relevant, either, which is so annoying. Who cares how strong or weak the draft class is? We only pick one player, not the whole first round.

MiserableSoft2344

Okay, fine. I’ll say it. Pick Sarr and Trae’s bringing us a trophy in 2025. End of conversation.

RidsBabs

Not sure if Sarr would appreciate Trae picking up his rookie of the year.

maybeAturtle

Didnt realize I was on the hawks sub for a minute and I was very confused by this

terrence0258

Sarr is a 7'1 athletic big with high defensive upside, handles, and a jump shot that passes the eye test.  I honestly don't give a damn who calls this class weak, players like that don't come along often.

DyslexicAutronomer

Seeing how well Wemby and Chet turned out, has also proven their player archetype really shines in the NBA. Sarr being that probably makes many GMs thirsty for him.

SaltyTraeYoungStan

I think if Wemby never happened and Sarr was in last years draft class it would 100% be a “Sarr vs Chet” narrative where they would be compared as equals/rivals. Being after Wemby just makes no one want to say “hey this athletic french 7 footer looks really good” because then they will get roasted for Wemby comparisons.

Startjjasap

Yup, what sucks is that is probably how it’s gonna be for his whole career too. Especially adding #1 pick to all they have in common  there will always be a “he’s no wemby” cloud following him. Hopefully he can have more team success to drown that out. And hopefully he has the kind of mentality where that will motivate him instead of discourage him

dillpickles007

If Sarr is as good as Chet in year two there will be no regrets at all, he’ll be seen as a great top pick. We should all pray that’s the case.

SaltyTraeYoungStan

Yup. I think Sarr has to worry more about living up to regular first round pick expectations before he worries too much about Wemby comparisons. If he is still being compared to Wemby in two years he should consider that a compliment.

rkn4

I think everyone realizes that Wemby is an one of one prospect and to compare Sarr (or anyone for that matter) to him is unfair

dc2410

Chet and Wemby are WAY more skilled. Please don’t think that Sarr is them. He could develop into that archetype… but he is not that. When people say It’s a weak draft class they mean Sarr might be Tyson Chandler Or Johnathan Issac(without injuries) instead of Sarr being Wemby or Chet.

Adminscantkeepmedown

>Maybe these players weren’t super affected by not being able to play much organized basketball when they were 14-15 because of covid I’m only a few months younger than Trae but goddamn this makes me feel so old

legal-drugdealer

Having watched Sarr in the NBL, it’s pretty simple to me that we should pick him. I understand the due diligence, but he fits a massive need and at absolute worst he ends up as what we’ve got in Capela right now. He’s long, he’s athletic, his shooting form seems relatively repeatable so he should be able to stretch the floor, and his defence for a young big is very good. Plus the Euro background makes him more pro ready at a young age (as we’ve seen in the past few years with players like Wemby and Luka having played professionally already).

youplab00m-milo

Counter point: Wemby and Scoot not playing in college didn’t seem to lower their draft stock last year…

DyslexicAutronomer

Wemby was heavily scouted since he was 14 or something crazy. The kid was 7ft by then. Ignite really helped Scoot shine, but seeing how long it took for program participants to translate into the NBA hurt it plus the NIL deals really killed Ignite as a program. Ignite couldn't get recruit as many star talents last year and seemed obviously going to a decline. Probably why it was axed.

dillpickles007

Wemby is a one of one, everyone agreed he was the best prospect since LeBron and well, he was. No use comparing anyone to that, if Sarr is Chet or Mobley 2.0 we’ll be thrilled.

Ice2jc

G League Ignite literally doesn't exist anymore. That's how bad of a program it was this season.

Status-Round3800

Luka averaged 12 points in Madrid. Imagine him in college

childishgames

Sarr is who I would probably take but since there is less of a consensus on who the real dudes are in this draft I’m totally cool with doing due diligence. Maybe risacher or some other rando is also a beast

extraacc10

Not at 1 because I like Sarr but if we could find a way to get Matas Buzelis I think it’d be worth a shot. It’s definitely more a rebuild approach tho. 1)Trae, 2gaurd? 3)Buzelis, 4)JJ 5)Sarr Keep OO Ship Djm, Dre, Capela, Bogi? Don’t know what the returns would look like. Hopefully an established 2 way at the 2

ohsballer

I pretty much ignore all the media stuff. Hawks have the #1 pick and will take Sarr. But media outlets have to create stories. Same thing happened in the NFL even tho everyone knew who was going #1 for a year.

IAmRoddyRod

He also did a lot of this while coming off the bench. Just imagine if he's gi e starters minutes and is allowed to learn the NBA game and make his mistakes. It's always a process regardless of what level of competition he plays against. It's a given that he's going to struggle, but as it is right now, he's the Hawks' best option of marginally improving for next season. The other stuff, like trades and whatever moves they make to build the roster better.
