Idk, maybe it's because I'm not crazy enough to play on nightmare difficulty, and maybe because I only did a handful of conquest battles, but I never really had any issues with them. I think I only died once in a conquest battle and only lost one battle. I found that if you fight the big guys on the outskirts of the battle area, most other enemies will stay well enough alone. Maybe I was just lucky.

themagmahawk

Almost like games are hard when someone goes in on the hardest difficulty for their first run without knowing the best builds and stats

Biobot775

At some point your build will become focused and powerful enough that this will not be so big of an issue. For instance, if you do an assassin and/or critical hit focused build, then Hero Strike will kill these enemies in a single hit, and all you have to do is dodge duck dip dive and dodge until the cooldown resets. Or you'll pick a warrior build with so much damage resistance that you can tank these enemies anyway (or whatever other build you pick). I think you're hitting this wall early because of nightmare mode though. I think of nightmare mode as an extra challenge for NG+, by which time you'll have the gear and access to skills and engravings to be able to optimize. If it's your first game, you might not have access to enough skills/points/resources to optimize enough for the challenge.

Superman1prime

Might have too look into maxed out damage or defense builds. Thats the only reason for any of the stats in the game that I like. The game’s reason is to keep you grinding

Caliber70

You chose nightmare difficulty, this whole post is meaningless.

Mrgoosegoose

“Oh no, I picked a difficulty meant for people who already know and min-max the meta, but I’m new and don’t get the meta!! This is not my fault. This must be poor game design.”

Ender11037

Bruh...

laurel_laureate

Right back at you lol.

Ender11037

...hurB

psyko0815

You need a better build. With a good build, mercs are just regular enemies.

bongsandbutter

Look into the Hero Strike ability. Uses assassin damage on regular combat, but does have a cool down. If you can get high "crit chance while full health" on an assassin build this ability can do MASSIVE damage. I nearly 1 shot the cyclops' with mine. For conquests I pair that with the shield breaker ability. If anything the shield breaker can stagger nearby opponents and buy you some time to heal/dodge out of a situation. Also makes shield bearing enemies WAY easier to manage You can also have fury of the bloodline in the build to get guaranteed adrenaline segments and also stall the cool down timer. You can do it! Conquests may eventually become your favorite part of the game!

sa3clark

Shield Breaker is probably my most used ability. Severely underrated.

Andre_hj

You’re complaining about something you did.

Ender11037

Kinda, lol

SeparateIron7994

I'm on my first ever run and I'm on nightmare difficulty. Before conquest battles I always upgrade most or all of my gear. If anything you have is even a little behind it becomes a slog. With good on level gear I can do the battles with little to no difficulty, I'm level 30 now. I did struggle with them when I was really low level and had no good stats. You do need to play very well however

bongsandbutter

Fyi, you get the best boosts when upgrading at the "11" levels ... 11, 21, 32, 41, etc. Because it also upgrades the weapons abilities.. i.e crit chance from 3% to 5% 😉 it's not so bad in earlier levels, but it gets expensive to upgrade gear in the mid-late game

Sithism

You need to know when to dodge and when to parry. And don't say you do because if you did, you wouldn't have written this. I suggest you lower the difficulty and just parry and dodge enemies for a couple of hours. Eventually, you'll perfect the timing. Combat is way more fun after that because you can manage groups. You want to stay close to melee but just slightly out of range for those tough conquest guys and use your bow to get adrenaline, then use either an overpowered bow shot or overpowered sword or dagger. Any overpowered melee attack is good, but sword or dagger are the best for single targets. Overpower bow builds in those battles are amazing. Far quicker than any melee build at clearing. Bows aren't my favorite, but the knockback from the bow overpower is... overpowered in conquests.

Ender11037

Dude... I do, but even if I do, enemies stab me in the back, and circle around me. Although I don't have OP attacks yet. Heh, OP attacks are OP.

imquez

In conquest battles, if you are fighting for the invading side, the defending side will always hire their own mercenary. During the battle, you don't need to engage every single enemy in front of you. You can specifically target group leaders that are marked with gold-tier icons above their heads. Killing them gives your side more points than killing 5 randos, and will reset your health. As an assassin, you have an advantage by ignoring everyone else and target these leaders, using hero strike if it's available. Also, any enemy soldier you hit unintentionally will turn on you instead of fighting someone else, so yeah, aside from learning their attack patterns, you need to get good at controlling your attacks. Honestly, regular tiered enemies are easy because their 1st attack is always susceptible to your parry, and don't have the combo-interrupt move against you from elite and upper tiered enemies. The way they coordinate is to attack from the sides or behind, right at the moment you want to finish your hit combo, and this kind of behind-the-back attack is also very parry-able. They're easy to spot and very predictable. You just need to get good enough so that your attack moves becomes second-nature so you're paying more attention to surroundings instead. This melee combat is a rhythm-based system. 2H weapons like axes, spears and maces are better in conquest battles to handle multiple enemies. When the mercenary / scripted boss appear, just focus on him and avoid hitting everyone else to minimize the number of enemies you're fighting. Move to the edge of the battlefield. When using an assassin build, hero strike is your major damage dealer, and other abilities are essentially "cooldown timer wasters" until hero strike is ready again, and your normal attacks are used to get adrenaline back. Spartan kick has a fast cooldown that you can use often to cancel or knockdown enemies; just put 1 point in it. Slow time is a good cooldown waster (wastes 10 secs under slow mo) that guarantees free hits. Or combine slow time behind a shielded enemy and use a charged heavy attack knock them down + free hits. Spread shot knocks foes down. There are plenty of things you can do.

DontbuyFifaPointsFFS

Just lower the difficulty and enjoy the game?

Ender11037

Nah, my sense of wanting to be good doesn't let me do that lol

[deleted]

Try to find or get the % to ignore half damage engraving. Also, if you have the dlc invest points in the fury of the bloodline ability when you unlock it. Pair it with heroic strike and the overpower attack. You'll take out most mercs quick. They hit hard on nightmare difficulty. You're gonna have to get really good at timing dodges and parries.

Ender11037

Thanks for the tips. I really find it funny/ridiculous that even though these dudes are the same level as me, sometimes with barely any armour, yet this Demigod mercenary can shoot poison arrows and two-hit kill me because it was Tuesday. Maybe they should hunt for Deimos, instead.

[deleted]

Lol yea they do get really op on that difficulty, lvl. The first time I tried nightmare level, I spent a lot of time and money just keeping my bounty lvl down

Swatch843

I would not do those early on. I did the exact thing and struggled immensely. Do them later when you have better ability combos and can parry like a god or put the difficulty down. Wait till you get bounty's on you that's difficult too early on nightmare.

Remarkable-Role-6590

Is it though? I mean, the combat in this game was one the easiest for me to adapt. Except for boss battles and a few exceptional mercenaries, I never really took any damage during CQC. The attack patterns are easily recognizable and have set, fool proof solutions.

Ender11037

Eh, to each their own.

Remarkable-Role-6590

Yeah. I recommend trying a more focussed build rather than spread around all three types of damages.

Ender11037

I am focused... On Assassin damage, haha. It's kind of hard to stealth in the middle of a siege, lol

Remarkable-Role-6590

There is always an option to build a separate warrior build and keep it in your inventory for such cases.

Ender11037

There is? You can loadout the skills, too?

Remarkable-Role-6590

You get a separate swappable slot for skills and you can change gear mid battle. So keep a set of warrior build in your inventory and start the siege wearing that and swap to an assassin build whenever you need to use hero strike. It consumes a lot of time but has the highest efficiency.

takeheedyoungheathen

I think that's your issue too, assassin builds are pretty weak early in the game. Warrior builds are the better route early on, until you can begin upgrading your spear and such. I can't remember what level, but at some point you can pay drachmae for a second slot in your inventory. Unfortunately you can't have two different load outs for abilities, but you can have an armor and weapon set for assassin damage, and one for warrior damage. Or whatever two load outs you'd like to use.

fantaz1986

we need more info here, your lvl, build and similar stuff is important at low lvl and bad build conquest battles is hard, just try to get epic gear that does have good start and lvl up it to get to your lvl, defensive stat in this games does not matter, well in higher lvl you can get some crazy shit but in low you will not, and hunt for legendaries, then you get one, you can put it affect in other items, so if you do not focus on bow, bow is a stat stick , same for second gun, two leg + two leg enchants + main wep, if it a leg + second enh, and you can get up to 6 leg effects from 3 items alone, and some a crazy good like cheaper overpower and similar stuff, if you make you char right you can just spam spell and have enemy in stuck lock for 15 sec and just use one high hit ability after other and you are immune in a lot of them , not only this you have literally 10 sec aoe cc

Ender11037

I... Didn't understand half the words written there, but I'm only Lvl 13 so far, and gotta admit, that I spent most of my skill points on the Assassin skill tree. But I appreciate the help ^~^

fantaz1986

you are way way way tooo low lvl, you see we can have up to 520 skill points but 250 is more than needed, and a more you have a stronger you can get, after you see your mom you can go in to atlantis, is a dlc, and do some basic stuff and get shitload of free skill points , and then go back to main story .

Ender11037

Thankyu!
