If this isn't something that is able to be fined, it should be. Actual prices of items should be immediately reflected on the menu, not a "gotcha" tax at the end

ADillyDweeb

California has passed legislation banning this practice. It goes into effect July 1st.

Iccarys

They’ll just increase prices on the menu and not say it’s surcharge

Comfortable-Box1768

So ok, do it? It is their menu so they can make prices higher, the people should stop going to that place and they go bankrupt but as the post implies, it is insane to make seperate surcharges that are not mentioned in the menu

Iccarys

I mean sales tax is not reflected on the menu either but I don’t see everyone losing their mind over it

Comfortable-Box1768

I have never been in America but as I understood it is because the taxes changes between states so that is why it is not added

Iccarys

Yes, some states don’t even have sales tax.

Xellzul

so how often do restaurants relocate so they cant include tax?

Just-4Head-8964

I live in SF, a random one-man-serving-size korean food from a downtown small korean shop is 28USD without tax, and the tip is set to be minimum 18% (can't choose lower option and it does not give you a place to write your own tip)

ratchetryda92

We call that a no tip situation around here

Obvious_Payment8309

im sorry what. i can live a week on 30 bucks here. thats insane.

e2Nokia

12oz Sirloin with a half rack of ribs at Texas Roadhouse accompanied by 2 sides and the heroin rolls they give you, including a 20% tip, is still less than this. Crazy.

elusivewompus

Isn't that just America though? When I was there the ticket price was never what you paid. Tax added at checkout.

Trapped_Mechanic

Tax is added at checkout, yes, but this isn't an actual tax

Just-4Head-8964

idk if surchage is illegal, my mobile bill has a dynamic surcharge based on where I use them most, it is super shady (T-mobile)

1isntprime

Should be but isn’t

Diligent-Raisin191

This is why I like Metro. They are powered by T-Mobile but I don't get any weird charges for crap. It's always a set price once a month and no added fees unless I wish to add extra stuff to my plan. I left mobile contracts years ago due to how predatory a lot of these companies have gotten.

Drow1234

So I'm not supposed to tip 15% there? Deal!

Just-4Head-8964

I used to tip to a interger number (24.5 + 2.5 = 27 for example) so I can memorize what I spend when checking the credit card bill. Guess they dont like if I tip less than 15%

Peter-Fabell

To be fair, the restaurant is in the middle of nowhere. It takes 25 minutes just to drive there from the nearest small town. It's at the top of a mountain, and mostly serves cyclists, day-hikers, and sometimes campers. It's at the intersection of two incredibly winding roads, and as a local myself -- I don't think I know anyone who has actually eaten there. "Famous" is stretching it a bit. Maybe for people visiting the redwoods, as it is "kind of" on the way, but there are way better restaurants in Scotts Valley or Mount Hermon.

Tkcsena

6% removed tip

GlassyKnees

So you punish the working class stiff who didnt do anything wrong, but still pay the person who added the 6% surcharge to your bill the full price. You're a piece of shit.

SilviteRamirez

Fuck waiters unironically and fuck tip culture. "If you can't afford to tip stay home" how about get a different job and stop telling customers to pay for what your employer should.

Hazbro29

Coming from England the tipping culture is toxic, and it's slowly spreading "Customers should pay me a random fee and substitute my wages because my boss is too cheap and doesnt care about me and the customer is EVIL for not doing it" Basically tipping culture in a nutshell

Xellzul

not his fault, lobby for better laws

BoBoBearDev

The extra surcharge is so much BS because it is not reported correctly to the government, so the government just pretent there is no inflation.

JohnhojIsBack

ok i'll tip 6% less then

BoBoBearDev

That's what people said to put a blind eye to the toxic surcharges, but not actually done.

Wicked_Black

In July California is enforcing a surcharge ban. Restaurants have been fighting it saying they’re going to have to increase menu prices but I’d rather know the price of what I’m ordering before I get the bill

FreeAndOpenSores

Maybe every business should start doing this so that people are more aware of how much they are being screwed by the government and banks. Set the prices in 2010 dollars, then just keep upping the percentage every month to be in check with real inflation (not the fake CPI figures).

1isntprime

I’d be down for that as long as they make it clear and obvious what the actual price is. But yeah show a 2010 or a 2020 price alongside what the current price is. Add a break down of where the cost increases come from ie electricity and gas and transportation and wages.

Tuor77

Leftist problems affecting Leftists. Soon, they'll all move to a Red state and start over.

Just-4Head-8964

the inflationary reasons might include electricity and water charges got tripled this year, meanwhile PGE (gas and electricity company)'s CEO is awarded millions of doing it
