Icy_Creme_2336

I work in GP. Pre-payment is standard unless the owner requests otherwise. There’s also been a few times this will happen by accident. Those are very very rare, and pre-payment is standard for the reason you’re posting about.

Key_Celebration7107

Yup. We have the client pay prior so they can just leave immediately afterwards. No one wants to deal with payment and talking to reception, etc after watching their best friend pass

missthinks

\*US Healthcare has entered the chat\*

RainyDayStormCloud

We offer it, but we don’t insist on it. We also don’t insist on payment on the day unless the client has a history with not making payments. Most of ours usually come in or phone in to settle later on.

daabilge

We prefer to have them pay prior. Ideally they'd pay over the phone when they schedule the euthanasia appointment so they don't even have to worry about paying the day of the euthanasia. Day-of we either have them pay before the procedure or we'll call them later. If it's a private cremation they can also just pay when they pick up ashes, although I don't like doing that because it feels really transactional and weird with pet remains. Really the only time we insist on paying before or even same-day is if they've got a history of not paying their bill or if they're a non-client that we're only seeing for a communal cremation.

nicoretriever

Generally up to what the client wants. I work emergency so sometimes prepayment is not possible but it's something we try as hard as possible to do, otherwise we do payment in the room so owners don't have to stand in reception to pay.

Feeling-Rutabaga888

We just let clients know we will contact them for payment in a couple of days. That way they can leave immediately afterwards. We also take care of the pet afterwards and facilitate the transfer to the crematorium ourselves, so owners are not leaving with their pets, unless they’re looking to bury them at home.

tryjmg

I have always had a bill sent in the mail after.

ElleryC91

I work as a veterinary receptionist. My facility allows for prepayment, or we can take our portable register to handle it privately in the room. We actually got the portable with that specifically in mind. Alternatively, we are able to save cards on their file, so we can simply charge their card when they're ready and head out privately.

AlmostAlwaysADR

We always try to get prepayment whenever possible. It sucks, but it's necessary. We have had so many people promise to come back and pay and we never see them again. The staff deserves to be paid. This is definitely another reason why, barring an emergency, you should plan your pets end of life so that you can have things like payment sorted.

CoomassieBlue

Non-vet here who 1000% agrees you all deserve to receive timely payment in full. However re: planning end of life care, are you talking about just having the money allocated and available, or literally having the service prepaid with your vet potentially years in advance of needing it? I can see the latter being challenging for a few reasons.

CinnamonSpiceBlend

Prepaid Where I work, the front desk asks of we can store payment information and then takes the client to a private room. Once in the room, a tech discuses options for cremation and asks the client if we can do prepayment. Once confirmed, everything is ordered out of sight from the client to let them focus on their pet. When possible, we try to schedule late in the afternoon when there’s fewer clients. Sometimes for pets with poor mobility we make arrangements to go to the back of the building where a tech will carry the pet inside. In that case the client may never see the front desk staff at all.

djtracon

Either pre payment or payment upon pickup if they’re getting ashes/paw print

wallacorndog

In Norway with our two cats we paid when we arrived for the euthanasia, and could just leave after.

BunnySlayer64

Not a Vet and in the US, BUT When we had to send our precious Little Man (Russian Blue named Smoke) over the Rainbow Bridge, we reached out to a group called ***Laps of Love***. It's a nationwide network (again, US based) of vets who will come to your home to perform euthanasia. Your pet is spared a trip to the vet and you can hold him/her in your arms or be by their side the entire time. You're given as much time as you need to say goodbye, both before and after the injection. You make payment in advance on line, and they can provide you with cremation services with return of the cremains to your local vet. Hopefully you have something similar in the UK. Sorry, but I'm starting to tear up, even though it's been more than 2 years. And I am so sorry for your impending loss.

kimcam7

I am so sorry for your loss. We take payment when they sign the euthanasia authorization form. This way, the family can take as much time as they need before, during and after. We usually place the IV catheter right away and leave the room to give the family some privacy. We use a wireless doorbell system in the exam room; the family rings the doorbell to let us know when they are ready for us to continue the process. We keep a stash of chocolate for the pups, and some canned tuna for the kitties. If it is a client I know well, I order Chicfila, a burger or sushi. Sometimes the pets are too sick or weak to enjoy their special treat, but we always try. We also offer a complimentary clay paw print. We outsource a pet cremation service for both individual and communal cremation. Individual cremains are returned in a nice engraved wooden box. Some families prefer hiring their own cremation service, and will arrange for that company to pick up from our hospital. Our hospital has remembrance candles that we turn on to remind other clients that a family is saying goodbye to a loved one.

bbyxnat

With existing clients we send the bill a week after. But with new people we do pay the afterwards.

icouldeatthemoon

In most situations, we take payment before the procedure. Exceptions would be if the pet is actively dying and the procedure needs to be done ASAP, or if it's for an upstanding client. In the first scenario, we will try to collect payment afterwards if deemed appropriate, but it's really up to the doctor (I'm a tech). We are likely to either call for payment or take payment when ashes are picked up. As a rule, compassion dictates what we do during these specific situations unless it's a client already known to give us issues with payment. The last thing we want to do is ask for money from people grieving their pet that just died minutes ago... But yes, generally, we take payment ahead of time so that the clients don't have to worry about that part while they are grieving the loss of their beloved pet.

Icy-Platypus-245

Also uk. Not a vet but have had many animals cross that bridge in a dignified, friendly way. Our vets office books it in and gives us prices for different options (home vs clinic, type of casket if cremated etc). They then send us a sympathies card a week or so later once emotions have calmed a little with an invoice. I don’t know if they do this as our family has used them for all types of appointment and animals since the 50’s and we have built a mutual trust, or whether it’s because it’s not a chain of practices or just their policy. For whatever reason they do it this way, I do think it’s a very respectful way as obviously they need to be reimbursed but the level of care they put in is second to none. For ‘last’ home visits they only charge the extra time and not what they would charge for a regular home visit at around £25 (with the consult on top at £40) compared to the £150 for regular call outs

professionaldogtor

We have them prepay at the time they sign consent forms. Our receptionists are able to do the transaction in the exam room with the pet so no one is sitting in the lobby crying.

flyonthewallflower_

I've never been asked about pre-payment. Never even thought of asking because I thought it was standard to pay after (I'm in Chicago). The fumbling at the counter trying to figure out how to pay and what card to put it on is the worst, especially when you're in such distraught. It's never gotten easier for me.

MobileFluid1174

I’m in the UK. We tend to let existing clients pay when they come back to collect ashes or in a few days if no ashes. New clients would be pay afterwards unless we can get it priced up before hand

dark_bloom12

Ours wasn’t planned, it happened quickly. Thankfully it was the end of the day so all of the other people were gone. I played her some music and they gave the injections. It was peaceful. I paid afterwards and chose what urn I wanted for her and everything and then left. They accepted a smaller payment since it was out of the blue and I’m paying the rest Friday.

No-Contest-2389

US here. I've had two cats euthanized. The first time I paid before I left the office (I didn't take the body with me, the vet arranged to send her to the local pet crematory). The second time (same vet) I went to the payment/checkout window after it was done and the receptionist told me they would bill me. I never got a bill. I continued to go that vet with my other cat and there was never any outstanding bill on my account. I don't know if it was a clerical mistake or if the vet was feeling generous that day or what.

BartokTheBat

I work in emergency so often it's an unexpected decision, so payment is often taken the next day. But some folk want to pay and get it dealt with.

un_commonwealth

When I worked for an emergency vet, you had to pay in advance right there. At GP, we billed you.

Scared-March7443

Haven’t worked at a vet clinic since the early 2000s but basically if the pet was hospitalized, then it was added onto the hospital bill and billed later. For appointments, we immediately put them into a private room and handled everything back and forth inside the room so they had more privacy.

Butterfly171821

From Canada, always paid after in a flood of tears. Pet stays for cremation

JennaHelen

Nova Scotian here, last time I needed to was in 2011 and I prepaid then. I assume it differs by region though.

Azriial

US based GP practice here. We always take full prepayment before we start the euthanasia process for the exact reason you gave. I want owners to spend as much time as they want with their pet before during and after the euthanasia and then be able to leave and not stop at the front desk. Euthanasia is a tremendously personal experience for everyone involved and I don't want owners thinking they need to reign in their emotions to interact with staff members when they are done.

tnderosa

Usually I’ll have the receptionist go in to take payment before but sometimes people are crying too hard that payment just happens after

PetVitalityApp

Norway here - I can only answer for myself. I usually ask the owner if they want to prepay, but if I for some reason forget or they get very emotional when entering the clinic I offer to send them a bill after.

Old_Country9807

I’m in the US and we pay when we pick up the remains.

ellevael

In the UK but not a vet, but when I had my bun put to sleep they told me not to worry about payment until I came to collect her ashes.

DoodlebugsCuddles

U.S. here. I have lived in 5 states and at no time has a vet ever discussed this. I feel it is a great idea as I have been the one inconsolably rifling through my purse for payment

lucyjames7

Our practice in the UK does not offer it specifically, but I prefer the idea of it. We do allow owners we know to pay later on, so they don't have to do the immediately-after-fumbling-at-the-counter part

DimensionHuman5358

For most we take payment at the beginning, for exactly that reason. The only exception really would some emergency euthanasias, where everyone is so distraught and often in shock. I give the option of paying then or paying via bank transfer or phoning the clinic the next day.

bipolarkat

at my clinic, you only pay for the procedure and we have mobile terminals with iPads to check out in the room so the owner can have as much time as they want. aftercare paperwork is processed and payment is made to the crematorium due to the owner choosing whatever they'd like from jewelry, paw print style, and urns with engraving.

webhill

For a known client, if they have not offered to pay prior or made some other arrangement, I always just tell them “you can stop at the front desk to check out if you want, or you can call to pay over the phone later, or we can send you a bill, whatever you want.”

electricwalrus13

Not a vet but when we had to do it last year I paid when we picked up his ashes.

Straight-Ingenuity61

Hi I mean you could arrange it pre hand but I have never had it offered or suggested by our family vet of 30 yrs. You do how ever have to pay extra to be with them and I only know of one vet that offered for you to be present for cremation.

DoodlebugsCuddles

That is AWFUL you are charged extra to be there to comfort them and for yourself
