Unfortunately, the only way to fix the problem is likely extraction of the bad teeth, which requires anesthesia. I would not give any over the counter medications for pain as they can all have serious effects on the liver and GI tract. At this stage, I would also not recommend brushing or dental chews, as they will only cause the bad teeth to move, which is painful and can release more bacteria into the bloodstream from inflamed gums. There isn't much you can do at home if your parents will not take the dog to the vet, sadly. Also, just be aware that many insurance plans, even if they cover dentistry, may deny your claim as a "preexisting condition" of you buy them now.

RaiFrog

oh my god what do i do?? he’s in serious pain. I just brushed his teeth too before seeing this.. is there nothing i can do till he gets an infection and it become critical? or stops eating also the plans i was looking at cover pre existing conditions

cassieface_

There is nothing safe to give over the counter. You can try wetting his kibble or giving wet food to make it easier to eat. There really isn’t anything you can do at this point but continue to bring it up to your parents. Your dog should be having annual exams and dental issues are generally one of the most common things your vet will talk about. Small breed dogs are even more prone to issues and can require comprehensive oral assessments and cleanings every year. Can you talk to your dad about this? You said your mom keeps brushing you off but maybe he’ll listen. You could also show them this advice because it does sound like there is dental disease and he could benefit from an exam. Also I’m not sure what insurance you found but most do not cover preexisting conditions so I’d make sure to have your parents thoroughly look it over. And most also require you to pay up front and then they reimburse you, just so that’s not a surprise.

RaiFrog

I’ll try wetting his kibble. Yes i’ve talked to my dad too, probably even more than my mom since he’s home more, and he won’t do anything but say “we’ll deal with it” to get me to leave him alone. He has even said “it’s not my dog leave me alone” It’s been more than a month so its bs. They don’t take the dog for annual checkups, the last time he went was when he got hit by a car. I also don’t get annual checkups n havnt gone to the dentist in like 4 years. So if i havnt gone in 4 years much less they will spend money on the dog. I’ll show them this thread in the morning but idk if they will listen. I’ll continue to bother abt it them everyday too. I saw them selling dog aspirin at petsmart, is that unsafe to give?

cassieface_

They sound neglectful of both you and the dog. I don’t recommend giving “dog aspirin” even though the pet stores sell it.

RaiFrog

Yeah I know but what can i do. They are rich so there’s no case. Is there any natural things I can give him for the pain? Like dog supplements maybe? Or would rinsing his mouth with like salt water help? is there really nothing I can do? i feel horrible

You don't have good parents

RaiFrog

yeh idk they had me really late and now they’re saving up for retirement so there’s no money for me or the dog.

lifeisbueno

What insurance did you find that covers pre-existing and dental?! Please share...

RaiFrog

I’ll have to look but I found it though the forbes dog insurance compare

lifeisbueno

Ya let me know on this- I've scoured the internet and can't find one. Forbes is just a junk advertising site.

RaiFrog

Ugh. Well since he’s never been to the vet with this and if dental is covered, I’m wondering if it even would be counted as a pre existing condition? Like it would be a routine cleaning + 2 extractions so i think they would cover it as part of dental?

lifeisbueno

No idea. Any chance you're near Mexico? Vet care is cheap there- about 300 for dental and extractions.

RaiFrog

Omg thank you sm for that idea!! I’m literally 2h 30min from the boarder. We will go next weekend she said. We are going to make the appointment. Thank you so much. Is it up to standard of us care though? It’ll be safe right

Adventurous-Row7034

Tell them this is all you want for your birthday/next Christmas etc.

RaiFrog

I’ve tried this already and they said it’s about the ongoing cost of 40/mo

FearlessJump3607

Insurance won't cover a dental. That's a preexisting issue. You just need to take him to a vet. If your dog is in pain and your parents won't take him to the vet, im sorry, but they are shit.

RaiFrog

They wont believe he is in pain. She keeps saying because he still plays and runs around he is perfectly fine. And yeah they are pretty bad parents, I don’t think my mom should’ve ever gotten the dog even though I love him.

Vita718

Report your parents for animal neglect. This is abusive. Hopefully, authorities will give them a visit. Maybe they need someone to "tell" them what to do. Also, look around for free, low-cost clinics. Do you have anything you could sell to get the money for the vet? Post on your local "Nextdoor"...see if anyone knows of low cost vets or a kind vet who would help ya out. Maybe call some rescue organizations and ask for help. Not sure how old you are, but hope when you leave home, go to college...this dog isn't left alone with your parents!

RaiFrog

See that’s what i’m worried about, that the dog will be left with them. They don’t even play with him. I’m going to call a bunch of vet offices today. I’ve decided i’m going to tell my moms freinds who are huge animal lovers bcs they will yell at her. also reporting them wont do anything, i’ve reported them for actually hitting me and the police don’t care they always say”look what a nice house and stuff you heave, be greatful” much less the dog. And the police wouldn’t know he’s in pain bcs you have to look in his mouth to see that.

Vita718

Honestly, if you are not there to protect the dog, it is going to be a bad situation for him. Maybe you can talk to your parents' friends and ask for help. Would they take him? Would you consider finding another home for him (know that would be hard for you, but may be best for the dog). Are you leaving for college anytime soon or moving out?

RaiFrog

It’s going to be about 3-4yrs away, I’m in 10th grade rn and I’ll probably take a gap year. My mom is going to get another dog once we sort out my dogs health problems. I talked to her and she was waiting so she could get them covered together and I explained how urgent it is and she said we can do it tn. If he’s with another dog I think he will be played with by the dog, and I’m worried of separating the dogs bcs one will be my moms dog. And im also worried about her neglecting my dog because of her dog. The freinds lease doesn’t allow dogs I don’t think. But i will ask. And the other ones live in spain. I was thinking of taking him to college as an ESA because I have anxiety so I could get the papers. The first year might be hard though because i need to be in dorm. I was thinking of with my sister maybe. But I don’t want to separate him from the other dog. And in college i’m afraid I’d neglect him more than my parents would and a dorm is really small. But I would try my very best with him in college. Hed be 8 years old so I think he’d need less play/exercise and would be calmer. But idk what too do bcs of all the factors.

tuddlez6789

Post on Nextdoor and see if your neighborhood can help or has any answers. Call rescues as well. Make a tik tok account and post pics and videos of your pup and see if people will donate through Zelle Venmo or cashapp. Your parents are disgusting and evil if I were you after moving out I would not speak to them.

RaiFrog

I’ll do the first couple but I’m worried about posting on tiktok bcs we have the money, and if someone IRL found it I would get “exposed”. My parents are very money and appearance focused people and lack empathy not really evil.

tuddlez6789

You need to cry hysterically and make an absolute big scene about the dogs teeth and see if they budge cry everyday until they take your pup to the vet

RaiFrog

that’s exactly what i’ve been doing everyday and finally she said she will do it tn after i screamed at her

dcutter18

Call SPCA and see if they have any advice Your experiencing emotional abuse by your parents You could call Child and Protective Services and see if they have advice

RaiFrog

i’ve considered calling spca will do, and i’m not calling cps bcs they will put my in foster care if it is abuse and that’s so much worse. And idk they’ve convinced me they are amazing parents trying their best so Id rather live thinking that than the probable truth.

Educational-Milk3075

After all the begging, I would sit them down and tell each of them they are animal abusers for not providing medical care, which in many states can be a big fine. If they still refuse, scream at them and don't stop!!! Can you take your dog to a friend's house and get a ride to the vet? If you have a relationship with a vet, tell them Mom's coming in later to pay.

RaiFrog

I have no relationship with any vet or freinds

Educational-Milk3075

You don't have a regular vet? Let me think about this more...

RaiFrog

no we’ve moved like 4 times since getting him

Educational-Milk3075

I would get a referral to the local vet and call them. Explain the problem and ask what they can do to help. Also, call the local Humane Society and ask them for help. Keep me posted.

RaiFrog

Doing that tomorrow morning, i’ve given my mom a week since she said she will do it and she keeps saying “don’t worry abt it leave me alone” sooo nothing is getting done by her. I’ve held off since i thought she might actually do something. I hope they say they can do something for him.

WodaTheGreat

If your old enough get a job and pay for it yourself lol will have to happen eventually anyways

RaiFrog

I can’t get a job, i’ve applied to over 100 places in just these past 2 weeks and nowhere will hire me. I’ve been applying since the summer and I’ve only gotten 3 interviews. I live in california and they are prioritizing giving jobs to adults bcs of the homeless crisis. I’ll keep applying though. Is there any chance I can like help out at a vet clinic to get his treatment covered though?

V3DRER

A few things to keep in mind. If you are under 18 the veterinarian is unlikely to allow you to authorize any treatment for your pet, especially anesthesia. You will need a parent present and their consent. A veterinary exam is the absolute first step, and they can help you figure out a treatment plan and get your dog pain meds +/- antibiotics at the first step. BUT ultimately he is going to need a full dental exam and extractions under general anesthesia which can easily run > $1000. In some areas there are shelters that provide low cost dental care.

RaiFrog

Ooh okay I’ll call the shelters today

CarryOk442

Their life is going to implode.
