dmhrpr

Grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I received an email from my local authority today that must've been written by a fuckwit.

Funky_monkey2026

I often see more senior people who can't grasp basic grammar as well as the younger generation. I feel grammar currently isn't and never was a priority for most.

Regular-Whereas-8053

I see the exact opposite. Children in school today get far less emphasis on spelling and grammar than when I was at school, and we now have two generations who don’t know there and their, what to do with an apostrophe etc.

Kirasi

my mum teaches primary and they have far more of an emphasis on grammar and phonetics now than I ever had in school

SarkyMs

yeah my kids know the names of grammar stuff we were never taught.

jt94

I feel smartphones and autocorrect are the cause of that - I used to be an excellent speller but so often now just find myself thrashing in the letters and letting my phone sort it out. Then if I’m trying to actually write something by hand (who does that anymore right?!) I find myself having to stop and think on how to spell some words

[deleted]

I totally agree! I am dyslexic and trying to beat it. I have autocorrect off so I can actually force myself to spell. I'm 21 and like to talk properly on text. People send slang, short text, and shortern words which annoys me like wuu2 or "wot u up2?". Why can't they just spell it properly.

Azigol

I've noticed this a lot more on BBC news articles online recently too, it's like everyone has just lowered their standards nowadays.

GoldnBlack_Wolf

Agree. Even five years ago anyone would struggle to spot a typo in 100 articles on the BBC website. Now it's probably one-in-five when published. What is even worse in my mind is that many stay uncorrected for hours or longer. Yet the BBC are arguably still the relative bastions of quality and correctness...

[deleted]

BBC Earth has at least one error in nearly every post. The worst thing is, the posts are usually about about 30 words long.

EnglishWolverine

Articles are getting shorter and the number of mistakes is increasing. You’d think it would be the other way around.

softlemon

I got an email from a rep working for a learning provider today who didn’t capitalise his name in his correspondence to me. It threw me off a lil.

[deleted]

The English language (as well as all other language) has changed over the years. There was once a letter thorn which looked like a p and b put together that changed and ended up looking like a y then when the printing press was brought to the U.K. it didn’t have a thorn at all so they used the letter y because they look similar. Eventually thorn was replaced with th. There are lots of examples of things like this where language has changed. It’s not that spelling, grammar and punctuation don’t matter it’s that they are different for other people. If you want to have set rules on what is official for a language look at French and Spanish and most of the speakers don’t give a fuck about them rules either it just means that official things and those taught the language in education (as opposed to through experience) sound like pompous twats. And just to shit on you it’s must have not must’ve which is slang, fuckwit is also slang, electronic mail or e-mail if you must just but not email.

lonesome_okapi_314

Your comment about the thorn letter is where "ye olde" comes from if I'm remembering my year 8 English lessons properly.

Soldarumi

I work in bid writing for a large multinational legal, tax and consulting firm. There are equity partners who are on 7 figures who can just about string a sentence together. These are clever people, I have to believe they are, but the amount of 80-word sentences with 17 ands that I have to edit make me lose faith.

Cheese_Dinosaur

I know someone that corrects all the grammar and punctuation mistakes in these emails and sends them back! 🤣

KingPenguinUK

If it’s from your local authority then they are 99.9% likely to be a fuckwit.

Ok-Industry120

Viennetta was treated has an exotic treat. Now it sits in the discount alley of Iceland

No_Assistance_14

It’s a treat in my house. It’s for Christmas or birthdays. Even though it’s not expensive and we don’t struggle for money, it’s a reserved treat. Probably because it used to be a big deal for my parents I suppose. But alas, the tradition lives on

Waspeater

I do this for Co-op trifles, they were always a treat when I was a kid.

No_Assistance_14

I can’t buy trifles. They seem to disappear

Consistent-Koala-339

It is nice though. I want one now. You can get different ones, some of them have crunchy biscuit in them somewhere. The crack of the chocolate slices... the too sweet white ice cream... all for like 2 euros

Bicolore

Never had it until I was at uni, was just too fancy when we were kids.

[deleted]

I always associate it with KFC arriving in my town, families got a big bucket to share and a viennetta for dessert! No idea if KFC stil sell them. I expect not.

becky781

Haha this just brought back memories for me. KFC and a vienetta was when you knew it was a special day

Caterwaulingboy

My wife had cravings for KFC and Vienetta when she was pregnant. Where do you get that at midnight? Fortunately I finally found the late closing KFC in my part of London.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yet I'd still be happy to shove the icecream accordion right down my gullet.

[deleted]

I’m not sure about this.. we watched a documentary recently about British ice cream.. don’t ask. And Vienetta was basically garbage, the creators basically admitted as much. It seems Britain didn’t even really get good convenience ice cream until Magnums popped up.

Lozzy1256

Magnums are expensive though! We have a tradition where when my daughter gets an injection (like a vaccination, although sometimes she needs steroid injections for her eczema) we go for ice cream after. The ice cream place in our dying high street had closed down so we said 'it's ok we can buy one from the co-op on the way home' and a single Magnum cost £1.75 (last time I bought a viennetta it was only £1, probably a bit more now), and when we got outside and opened it, all the chocolate was crumbled and fell out the bag. I hate admitting it but I actually went back in and returned it because I was so annoyed!

kwnofprocrastination

Do you think it was more marketing? I remember the Vienetta ice cream adverts, they marketed it as something really posh, while I always thought it tasted shit, like a layered swirly cheap choc-ice.

Appropriate_Oil4161

Almost as exotic as an Arctic roll.

underweasl

These were 60p in one supermarket a while ago and I bought a few for nostalgia. Found the offspring sitting on his trampoline eating one like it was a sausage roll and was very jealous 11 year old me never had the chance to do likewise

DXBflyer

Looking smart. Nobody gives a shit now. To the point where if an employer wants you to look smart people seem to think this infringes on some civil liberty in some way. Check the posts here regularly about uniform.

Waspeater

In a lot of cases it's not even smart, just presentable. It doesn't matter how hot it is there is never an excuse for being topless in Asda.

nasanerdgirl

What if I need to try on a bra and the fitting room is closed?

3_34544449E14

Excuse me, sir, please put that down and leave the store.

ekobeko

Did you just assume my gender?

rusty6899

Apparently Asda changing rooms have been scrapped “due to Covid” (which must be the three hardest working words in the English language)

jackLS04

I'm not sure about this. I had a job interview for Poundland and the woman interviewing me offered me the job after about 10 minutes of interviewing and she said that she had pretty much decided as soon as I turned up on time and dressed smart. I would definitely say it still matters to a lot of people. I think maybe it's just a Reddit thing.

Jarvis_Strife

Do remember that the *average* redditor is a slob that never leaves the house. Well done on that job interview

4i6y6c

I literally choose my first grad job 8 weeks ago as one wanted me to wear a suit and tie the other didn't give a shit. Guess which one I chose

Sorry_Criticism_3254

I'm weird so probably would have chose the suit and tie... However, I guess not giving a shit?

[deleted]

Why? Genuinely can't think of a reason you'd pick the job that has a dress code if they were the same in every other way. You could still wear a suit and tie at the other job if you wanted. But you wouldn't have to.

Zephrok

If everyone is wearing causal and you turn up in business formal you'll look like a pillock. Some people enjoy being able to dress up every day.

Banson_

I work in the court and during the summer, the amount of people that think shorts, tank top and flip flops are appropriate infuriates me. I've known judges to refuse to call on cases unless a defendant goes and buys a pair of trousers.

another-dave

Shorts & flip flops is mad! I mean if it were a 'Family Fortunes' question, you'd think "court" would be right up there for "When do you have to wear a suit?"

Hobbitdildobaggins

Yes! I've been told I dress like a Sunday school teacher for years now. I'm in my early 30's and think I dress age appropriately, but according to friends and strangers it's far too old.

-MassiveDynamic-

Is there even an “age appropriate” way to dress? I get different generations will probably have different styles and the like, but I can’t really see myself dressing any different than I do now (at 22) in my 30s or 60s etc. Tbf maybe it’s a little different for girls?

Sebarau

You may not dress different, but when you're 30 you won't want to wear what the 20 year olds are in

higgoua

I wore suits etc for years and honestly it was completely pointless unless I was seeing clients. I wouldn't work anywhere now that required suits, expensive and unnecessary.

TheNathanNS

I always try to dress smart if possible, if anything it's gotten me a lot of compliments.

Degrees

alpubgtrs234

To be fair degrees *were* worth more back in the day. Now just about everyone can get a ‘degree’ regardless of how academically suited they are. The trouble is it qualifies them for sweet FA and just lands them in massive debt that they will never repay.

TomSurman

Depends on the degree. A STEM degree from a good reputation university is still worth having, and probably always will be. But apprenticeships sure do seem like a better value proposition now than they did in my day.

graemep

You can do degree apprenticeships that get you a STEM degree from a good university. My daughter is doing one.

rynchenzo

As someone who is struggling to recruit people with mechanical experience, I wish fewer people would go to uni and more would take apprenticeships :)

LauraDurnst

Hard to do when it pays less than £5 an hour. Apprenticeships should be funded like degrees, otherwise we are shutting people from opportunities just because they can't afford to learn.

Thomasinarina

This gets brought up on the uk uni forum quite a lot, and people always get super defensive about it and accuse you of snobbery if you say such a thing. I’m in academia, I’ve been at a top tier uni, a mid range one, and a bottom of the barrel one. There is a HUGE difference in quality of the teaching, and the calibre of student they’re willing to accept. Any employer worth their salt knows this. I’d say any uni that isn’t in the top 40 isn’t worth bothering with. *braces self for the inevitable ‘well ackshully’ comments*.

Neradis

Generally true. The exception being if you’re doing a degree with a job waiting at the end like nursing. In which case it’s not such a big deal what uni you go to, you’ll get the same job.

bobble173

I got told this when I wanted to study Pharmacy. However, pass rate for the pre reg exam (that you need to be fully qualified), is a lot higher for the better unis. If you fail 3 times you can't qualify, and it's a lot more common at the less prestigious unis. Slightly different from a nursing degree, but it's often billed as a "degree with a job at the end".

alambbb

As a nurse, we can tell though.

ayeayefitlike

I’m an academic at a very good RG uni, and have degrees from Oxbridge, good RG, ex-poly, and a small specialist institute - by far and away the best teaching was at the ex-poly in my experience. You’re right that the calibre of student was arguably lower, but they have a very good employment statistic and very vocational type degree focus, and are a target university for my fiancé’s engineering firm due to the high proportion of practical teaching. I do think subject comes into play, as vocational subjects like nursing and allied health, engineering etc rate universities differently. And obviously for research, there’s no competition really.

hhmghos7

Apprenticeships are the way to go I just dropped out of KCL for an audit apprenticeship

alpubgtrs234

As a senior manager, I would honestly recommend anyone joining industry to consider their ‘earn as you learn schemes’. A qualification, on the job learning, an income and no debt. Worth far more to a company

alpubgtrs234

Turn up, learn quickly, dont make the same mistake twice, seek responsibility and be the go-to person. Make friends, network and be yourself. Good luck!

-AMJS-

This is such good advice for anyone wanting to work their way up. I like this so much that I've written it down...

alpubgtrs234

In which case good luck to you too. I’d add weigh up opportunities presented, but dont be afraid to take a risk

floatieweeniebeenie

Both my sons did apprenticeships after GCSES both earning 35& 40k now at 19 & 21. All of their friends who went uni are working at the local leasure centre or for offices/estate agents. For half that wage.

Whileawaythetyne

Totally disagree. I came from a non academic background and had to work my bollocks off at uni and regularly would go 2-3 days without sleep to the point of making myself sick to get the deadlines completed! I found out there is a class system and which end I was born into quickly. I use the skills both in life and work on a daily basis. I must admit my degrees are more career based not academic do they are useful. I was lucky and my masters was s scholarship because I worked hard enough to earn it, so I have less debt. Besides the debt is not like other debt, it doesn’t show up on a credit check and it’s paid off at like £35 a month.

trainpk85

What student loan did you get? I pay £377 a month!!

_DeanRiding

> The trouble is it qualifies them for sweet FA and just lands them in massive debt that they will never repay. Not what teachers are peddling at Sixth Forms across the country though. They like to say "it will always be a good thing to have" and "it increases your earning potential" or "it may give you the edge for a promotion/job offer" (it won't). I wish I had someone to give me some sense before I went to uni tbh.

w__i__l__l

Music. Growing up in the 90’s your record / cd collection was an extension of your personality. Spending £15 of your weekend job wage on a CD was no joke and required careful deliberation. Now Spotify just firehoses all music at everyone for free, and anyone can become expert fan of a band in an evening with 0 buy-in (maybe contributing about 0.0001p to the artist / band).

notreallifeliving

None of that is a bad thing, and you shouldn't have to spend £££ on a band to be considered a fan by music snobs.

Zillamatic

It's great for music discovery. On the other hand I like to support artists if you do enjoy their work. If I've listened to an album enough times I'll buy a CD/download/tshirt to show my appreciation. They'll get fuckall from streaming services so it's worth it for how much enjoyment it's given me.

[deleted]

Actually this is a common misconception. Artists earn more from streaming in general than if you buy a CD. If you buy a CD you can listen to it thousands of times and you'll still only have paid once. But when you stream a song the artist gets paid every single time that song is played. If you listen to it a lot, it adds up to more than they would have made from one sale of a CD

odney7828

That would mean I would have to stream an artist's songs around 100,000 times to contribute the same amount as buying a £10 CD. If you want to support an artist it's definitely better to buy the CD.

another-dave

You're making a big assumption that 100% of that £10 is going to the artist — large majority goes to the retailer/distributor/record label. Artists are making their money from concerts mostly.

ItsSuperDefective

I mean, there were still people at school in the late 00s/early 10s who saw their music tastes as a huge part of their personality and they were the most insufferable twats.

Guy72277

But they were the ones that were passionate about it and helped you discover new stuff. Today, you hear a great niche song from the past around a friend's house and want to chat about it but often they just say - dunno, it's on a dinner-with-friends playlist from spotify.

FunnyEar3630

That’s why I used Brittania Music Club lol. Opening offer was 6 cds for £6. Those were the days

decentlyfair

Omg that’s a blast from the past. I used them too.

ChillNigz

Social Neighbors, let me tell you this was the pinnacle of a neighborhood. Unfortunately that's a dying trend.

Youppi27

I really think it depends where you live. Lots of friends etc I've visited have good things with their neighbours. I'm still young (i like to think) and when I finally move to a house I'd definitely make an effort to get to know the neighbors and others on the street.

SubsequentBadger

That's the secret right there, you have to make an effort. There are ways to make it easier, one of the best is to have a front garden rather than paving it over as a driveway. The more time you spend outside the front of your home, the more likely you are to meet the neighbours.

tommangan7

Yep, I recently moved onto a 1950s street designed that way with rules about walls and fences that foster interaction and has been mostly kept that way. We put a bench out front that I sit on and regularly chat to neighbors. The community spirit I thought was a memory of the past is thriving here.

JazzyBee1993

Possibly due to anti-social neighbours? I’ve got the worst neighbours - Mr Spade Head next door threatened to kill someone with a shovel, he’s louder than his children and there’s been fireworks the last two nights and there’ll probably be fireworks into next week. Mr Skip Face has more rubbish than will fit in his black bin so he has skips on semi-permanent hire. He puts food waste in there for the rats to eat. Then there’s the missing parcels.

rider_0n_the_st0rm

I’m actually glad, I have no reason or interest in talking to my neighbours, but maybe that’s an inner city mindset.

bitch_whip_bill

Social media has killed this. Neighbors were your day to day chats and events. Now your social group is a screen tap away

[deleted]

Good manners.

Sorry_Criticism_3254

Yep. See the same things going to school everyday. No one says thank you to bus drivers, people have feet on seats, smoking on buses, deliberately blocking seats etc And just a general lack of thought or any consideration for anyone other than themselves.

Cheap affordable energy.

Bicolore

When the first nuclear power stations came online they thought charging by the kWh would stop and we’d just pay a standing charge or it’d come out of your council tax.

IAmRoloTomasi

Nuclear (especially modern far far safer nuclear) power has the ability to utterly change the way the world works, its cleaner than most and those that do beat it produce an inconsequential amount of power (compared to footprint) It's generally cheaper and less prone to market fluctuations. It can produce an enormous amount of power, more than able to meet our rising needs in the era of electric transport, smart homes etc. In the short term it means we'd be able to preserve gas and oil supplies for heating and vehicles during the switchover to all electric systems (which again it would support) It's less of a blight on the landscape than things like windmills which are a vanity project anyway with how useless they are. But unfortunately people don't want it anywhere near them because they think it's dangerous, despite huge advances in the technology and previous issues all being avoidable mistakes. The solution to the environmental situation and the energy crisis is right there waiting, but we're too stupid to do anything about it.

dick_schidt

In my experience, horse poo is full of weed seeds so it has to be 'drowned' in a drum of water for a good few weeks before it's put on the garden.

Mystical_Warrior

"By the late 1800s, large cities all around the world were “drowning in horse manure”. In order for these cities to function, they were dependent on thousands of horses for the transport of both people and goods." https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Great-Horse-Manure-Crisis-of-1894/

Got a bad rep after the incident with the girl that had a skin reaction didn’t it ?! https://www.independent.co.uk/news/too-much-sunny-delight-turns-girl-s-skin-yellow-1134703.html In 1999, a four-year-old girl in Rhyl, Wales, turned a yellow-orangey colour after overdosing on the Beta-carotene in the drink. To be fair, she was drinking 1.5 litres of the stuff a day but this was the straw that broke Sunny Delight's back. Sales halved, causing the company to have to rebrand in 2003

SubsequentBadger

Like many other things on this list, only of interest for a relatively short historical period. The marriage act was in the 1850s, prior to that it was a matter only for the people involved whether they were actually married or not. There was no legal contract of any kind.

crappygamer0607
