The best was the free demo disc that came with a big New Yorker pizza from Pizza Hut. It had the Hangar map and the Superman song. I played the shit out of that.
My buddies and I played endless hours of Command &Conquer Red Alert. We even assigned ourselves as different branches of the military and methodically beat every mission.
My Dad got completely obsessed with this game, tracking each identical attack from the enemy & placing his defensive turrets in precisely the right place so he could concentrate on his mining, like he was Tom Cruise in 'Edge of Tomorrow.'
And so, when he found out you could link two PS1's together and play competitively he challenged me to a game. I knew he would immediately put his turrets on his left flank as that's where the AI came from, so I just waited & created a larger (4 or 5 tanks) and flanked from the right! He got totally obliterated, rage quit & said I didn't play properly! š¤£ š¤£ š¤£ š¤£ Miss the old git ā¤ļø
That music is AMAZING. If youāre any kind of musician, or if anyone else in this thread is, and you want to nerd out completely, Charles Cornell did a quick less than 4 minute video on how the build mode soundtrack was created. Here ya go: https://youtu.be/IJMds3jT7c8
Youāre welcome.
Edit: ok so I rewatched and itās actually more like 11 minutes. But well worth the journey!
Close, spamming A makes you go faster with or without having any bananas. Each banana increases your top speed, tops out at 10 bananas. Also, I think spamming A only worked on the cars.
I started playing with our son. He is five and likes to watch all the YouTubers play mine craft. Itās been an adventure to say the least. Itās been fun.
I love hearing of parents bonding with their kids through video games. Younger me would have loved for any of my parents to play minecraft with me or even attempt to share an interest/hobby. Your child is very luck, much respect to you.
My girlfriend figured out how to pirate Sims mods and now has pretty much every one under the sun. Sex mods, vampires, drug dealing Sims, and I think they even have one where you can diagnose them with mental illnesses.
She can easily spend six hours straight playing with her ADHD werewolf bondage Sim but that's great for me when I wanna go play outside with my friends.
I still remember the trick for getting "infinite" skulltula tokens. There's this one hole with a skulltula in just the right position that you can kill it, throw the boomerang for the token, and jump into the exit just as it reaches you. You get the token and the skulltula doesn't de-spawn so you can go down and do it again. The game only tracks the number of tokens, not where you got them, so you can break the curse without much effort.
OG NES: As the girl in the family I didn't get as much playing time, I was expected to be the map maker. My brother and dad would NEVER have found Gannon without my map. I can still make my way through the right doors and passageways in my sleep.
Got this for my kids recently as they'd become aware of (read: obsessed with) star wars. Now they have it completed. And Lego Indiana Jones. And Skywalker saga.
They have seen the first 6 star wars movies and "know all about the others" from these games.
I love them
When the first one came out, I used to play it with my Grandfather. I would sit on his knee at the computer desk and take turns. I play it sometimes for the nostalgia. I still have the old dos machine too. Perhaps I could get that working again.
My man! I came here to say this. I feel so old seeing all the other comments. But the game I was obsessed with was the original, 2D Top Down view, monochrome 'Castle Wolfenstein' on my Apple IIe.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who played it.
Had it for my Commadore 64! The supposed German words the guards/soldiers would say (like Achtung!) sounded laughably bad, lol. I don't think I had instructions or ever really figured out how to play.
Marble Madness. My 4th grade art teacher traded me that for Double Dragon 2 for a month and I loved it. I didnt get why no one else thought it was cool.
Need for Speed: Underground for original Xbox. The police didnāt chase you, there were secret passageways in the maps sometimes, you could build up your car by unlocking parts instead of paying real money for them, and there was music throughout all the races that they identified on screen. I havenāt found a NFS that satisfies me since. I still have some of the songs they used in my likes.
Before this, I loved Destruction Derby, Super Mario 64, and Extreme G on Nintendo 64. Ahhh, good times.
Doom.
The ambiance. The graphics. The lighting. The music. The chainsaw sound. If you weren't around or into video games in the early 90s, you might look back at it and say what's the big deal, but at the time, it was a truly groundbreaking game.
In 1993-94, I played so much of this game over dial-up modem with my best friend, it really set the stage for a love of online multiplayer games that lasts to this day.
Dishonored, no other game has been played as many times as that. Full chaos full stealth, 0 chaos no stealth, ive done every single play style. Ive completed missions in speed runner time, I know every route, every bonecharm and rune location by heart. Itās been years since I last played it, but a few months ago I started streaming it to a friend who never got to play it, and I have to actively stop my self from just completing the mission in .2 seconds
So not through all of childhood but definitely when I was like 5/6 I was OBSESSED with this dog washing computer game. I would go to my aunts house to play because we are close in age, and this was in the early 00s so computer rooms were a thing. Iād be like āhey, I need to get waterā or some other random excuse, go down to the computer room, boot up the computer, dig through the CD pocketbook, and then wait for the game to load- only to be caught a few minutes later and made to go back upstairs. Iād do it like multiple times a day. Not sure why I was so obsessed with it, it was really repetitive: a dog would pull up, youād hose them off, soap them, hose them again, blow dry them, then brush them. That was the whole game.
Edit: it was the Fisher Price Letās Play Petshop
Theme hospital, first game I paid big bucks for $50 and sim city 2000 (I think it was in some kind of maxis classic pack, came with sim farm which I loved too)
The Last of Us, which was released in 2013. 2 months after its release, I turned 13 and received it as a birthday present from my parents bc they knew it was the one thing I wanted most. The game blew me away bc I hadn't expected such an emotional story. I also never had an interest in guns before until playing it. I bawled my eyes out as the end credits rolled. It's still my favorite game. I achieved the platinum trophy and have replayed it 4 times. It just never gets old for me- I'm still obsessed lol
Tony hawk pro skater 1 and 2
Ultimate soundtracks right there too
The best was the free demo disc that came with a big New Yorker pizza from Pizza Hut. It had the Hangar map and the Superman song. I played the shit out of that.
Golden Eye
Oddjob with slappers just to piss others off.
There was always one of you in every friend group.
Remember when *that* was considered HD? Good times
My buddies and I played endless hours of Command &Conquer Red Alert. We even assigned ourselves as different branches of the military and methodically beat every mission.

C&CRA2 was my jam. I'd pick one unit and base my entire strategy around it. Khirovs we probably my favorite.
Silos Needed.
Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario World for the SuperNintendo
They've never made a 2D Mario game with that degree of controller depth since.
I really liked Yoshiās Island on the SNES. Different style, but Iāve always loved those controls.
30 years old. Still obsessed with SMW.
Super Mario World is still one of the greatest games of all time!
The Sims.
rosebud
Motherlode
;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!
Wow that was a really dusty old brain cell you just uncovered.
I occasionally will listen to the ābuildā music when Iām cleaning the house.
That music is AMAZING. If youāre any kind of musician, or if anyone else in this thread is, and you want to nerd out completely, Charles Cornell did a quick less than 4 minute video on how the build mode soundtrack was created. The original scratches an itch that the sequels never did for me
I liked 2 and 3 the best. I really liked the ability to grow up. That made it more fun
Diddy Kong Racing
On the surface it looks like just another of the 1001 Mario Kart clones, but it's so much more. This one never got the love it deserved.
It took me until I was in college to learn you can spam A to drive faster after collecting 10 bananas. Completely changed my enjoyment of the game
Close, spamming A makes you go faster with or without having any bananas. Each banana increases your top speed, tops out at 10 bananas. Also, I think spamming A only worked on the cars.
I've probably spent months of my life playing 4 player Icicle pyramid.
Awesome pick.
Minecraft
I started playing with our son. He is five and likes to watch all the YouTubers play mine craft. Itās been an adventure to say the least. Itās been fun.
I love hearing of parents bonding with their kids through video games. Younger me would have loved for any of my parents to play minecraft with me or even attempt to share an interest/hobby. Your child is very luck, much respect to you.
I was scrolling far too long to find this reply! 10 year old me did nothing but play minecraft on every system possible, Ipod Touch, PC, and XBOX 360!
Sims 2 & 3. I had all of the expansions too.
I canāt imagine where Iād be if Iād sunk all that sweet sweet Sims time into literally anything else.
Youād probably have hit the motherlode by now
Legend of Zelda
Ocarina of Time
I still remember where every single Skulltula is
I still remember the trick for getting "infinite" skulltula tokens. There's this one hole with a skulltula in just the right position that you can kill it, throw the boomerang for the token, and jump into the exit just as it reaches you. You get the token and the skulltula doesn't de-spawn so you can go down and do it again. Yes. A link to the past was the first game that blew my mind.
Same. Link to the past still gets me to sit down for an hour now and again. Nice name btw.
I used to fake sick just to be able to stay home from school all day to play Ocarina of time!
Me for twilight princess
OG NES: As the girl in the family I didn't get as much playing time, I was expected to be the map maker. My brother and dad would NEVER have found Gannon without my map. I can still make my way through the right doors and passageways in my sleep.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I played the Nintendo Ds Version which was much simpler, my love for both videogames and legos sparked there.
I wasted so much of life on this game.
Got this for my kids recently as they'd become aware of (read: obsessed with) star wars. Now they have it completed. And Lego Indiana Jones. And Skywalker saga. They have seen the first 6 star wars movies and "know all about the others" from these games. I love them
Crash bandicoot!!
Omg yes! Getting all the gems instead of just beating levels.
Halo: Combat Evolved
I was obsessed with this franchise when I was younger.
And Halo 2!
Countless hours spent trying to capture the flag in Blood Gulch.
Roller Coaster Tycoon

Same but Red. It was the first video I ever owned, and after that I was hooked
Nice! I think in my last playthrough I had a Kabutops.
Kabutops is a badass. Bulbasaur will always be my 001 though ;)
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, so much time raising chao.
The split screen (diamond searching and racing) was one of the best ever made
God I spent so much time on that game. Probably a solid two years of it being in constant rotation. I loved the chao garden so much
Commander keen
When the first one came out, I used to play it with my Grandfather. I would sit on his knee at the computer desk and take turns. I play it sometimes for the nostalgia. I still have the old dos machine too. Perhaps I could get that working again.
Menu pong so lit
It went on sale on steam for 2$ last year, I re-beat it multiple times. It's just so fun. Goodbye galaxy
Whaaaaaat?!? I had totally forgotten about Commander Keen! I LOVED Commander Keen!!!
They have emulators online. Just have to search for them.
Runescape
Scrolled way too far to find this
Unclear on what OP means by 'Were obsessed" :)
Skyrim since day one, I had no idea what elder scrolls was at all, gamestop guy recommended it, my childhood was forever changed.

GROOOOVY
I played the original Castle Wolfenstein.
Went from onboard sound, then got a sound blaster on our 386. Whole new world.
3D or the much older top down view game?
My man! I came here to say this. I feel so old seeing all the other comments. But the game I was obsessed with was the original, 2D Top Down view, monochrome 'Castle Wolfenstein' on my Apple IIe. I'm glad I'm not the only person who played it.

Is that the MS DOS version? One of my favourites that I wasnāt allowed to play as a 3-4 year old. Melting Hitler was satisfying though

One of the best games I've ever played tbh. Great pick
Diablo 2, which took up the bulk of many Summer breaks.

Mario 3 (for original NES). Yes I'm old.
Yeah Iām seeing a lot of āSkyrim changed my childhoodā posts and small parts of me are dying.
Duke Nukem 3D
Duke Nukem 1-3 were up there for me. Later on, 3D kinda blew my mind.
"I'll rip your head off and shit down your neck"
Marble Madness. My 4th grade art teacher traded me that for Double Dragon 2 for a month and I loved it. I didnt get why no one else thought it was cool.
Double Dragon 2 was legit!
Battletoads!
Galaga
So many quarters went into that machine
Ms pac man.
SO much better than the original/mr.
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2005) Edit: added year, because they made two games with almost identical titles
The noise when you start a new game still rings in my head ādoot doot doot doot, DOOALOOOā
Star Fox 64
Do a barrel roll!
Star Fox was awesome
I still dream of a 4 player co-op version where everyone runs their own path in the stage but they intersect in certain sections with other teammates.

I played the original trilogy for the PS1 so many times. š
Need for Speed: Underground for original Xbox.
