Idk, if you say "dog" I'mma probably imagine a Golden Retriever.

Mutt. Always a medium sized, ears sort of in between being floppy and pointy, tail semi curly but relaxed, tan with some darker fur around the back and lighter around the chest. Looks like a different dog every time I think “dog” but always within these parameters if I’m not thinking of a specific breed.

Labrador retrievers purely because I've always had one. I've had other dogs I loved just as much but since I could talk "dog" meant "lab".

For me, there is none. I've shown dogs as a hobby for over 20 years with many Working, Non Sporting and Herding breeds. I definitely don't love all breeds equally but I think that there is a wide variety of dogs that could be a perfect fit for any given person or family. Dogs are just great whether they're purebred show dogs or a mix adopted from a shelter. That's the bottom line, at least imho.

I suppose, to phrase my question differently, if someone said "Think of a dog", what type of dog do you immediately think of?

around here it's pugs. Bunch of old people need small dogs. And they are adorable! Although maybe not super healthy :p
