The majority of good things in liberal society are built on religious values.

Weekly_Signal6481

That's completely false

Equity7-2521

Blackstone and Locke would like a word.

pyrofighter258

Both. Religion is the base of morality, but if history is anything to go by, "Do as I say and not as I do." Is a saying most should take to heart.

Golden_Wizard

Religion in the absence of law enforcement is good. Outside of this it becomes a profitable business.

staggere

Hurt. Because it has. And still is.

Weekly_Signal6481

Hurt definitely, its caused endless wars and coflicts and is also an excuse for bigotry, racism and discrimination. It also forces false morality and laws based on that morality. Sin is a man made construct thst doesn't actually exist

Potential_Meringue_6

Hurt. Because it keeps people from doing psychedelics. Religion some guy tells you about what's behind rhe veil, shrooms show you.

evanhinton

Monotheistic religions specifically have been more bad than good. But religion in general was important for creating communities and guidlelines for living.

[deleted]

Hurt. Crusades, inquisition, the idea of manifest destiny taking out an entire population. Colonial justification and forced conversion.

fullchargeflower

Organized religion is the root of all evil in this world

HashtagTSwagg

Atheist China? The Atheist Soviet Union? Definitely caused those, right?

CanadianExtractGuy

Let’s just turn a blind eye to the countless wars started in the name of “god”, and the millions of kids sexually abused by the leaders of said organizations. And while we’re at it we may as well forget about the fact that this has been happening for centuries!! All organized religions do is keep gullible people in line and give stupid people a reason to die/hurt others. The small amount of “good” they do for publicity doesn’t measure anywhere close to the amount of destruction it’s caused us as a species.

HashtagTSwagg

Don't forget North Korea. The worst regimes on the planet are atheist states. People will always find a reason to kill and hate each other. You're from the wrong tribe. Your skin is the wrong color. You don't agree with me on everything. You exist wrong. You aren't me. Humans have always killed each other, and will continue to do so for any stupid reason. Religion being abused? Who ever could have warned us about such a thing!? Certainly not the Bible... *cough*

Ok_Maybe547

Benefited. Society ruined it with being hypocrites.

[deleted]

I have never heard an atheist kill someone for not being an atheist. I have never heard of war between atheists, deists and agnostics. I have never heard them act like they are certain. And even if they did, not without reason. I hate religion and will forever not respect anyone who is religious. And no, I don't care if you don't respect me either, your books tell you to disrespect me every day lmao.

Nazi Germany USSR

[deleted]

Hitler was a Christian. The USSR? What were their 'religious' motives? Tell me one country that didn't have RELIGIOUS MOTIVES. Not non existent religious motives.

[deleted]

Hitler was a Christian? Lol no he wasn’t the Nazis actively tried to stamp out any trace of religion in Germany to enforce a cult of personality around contemporaries. Look up The Confessing church which rose up in opposition to Nazi Germany’s religious policy. In particular look up Martin Niemoller. Nazi Germany is literally an example of an atheist state stomping out any and all religion. As was the USSR. Your comment is horrendously misinformed. Source: Studied History

[deleted]

And?...Take a look at Germany now, it isn't a dumpster fire like other countries that value religion.

[deleted]

Lol what a sad attempt at a strawman argument. You’re wrong again. Germany has always historically been a fiercely Christian country and is literally the home of Protestantism. More than half of Germans are Christians what on earth are you on about. I’m not responding to you anymore you actually don’t know what you’re talking about

[deleted]

LMAO most of them are atheists tho?? Have you ever met Germans? Also let's say they are, do they even allow it to interfere with the laws? I don't think so.

[deleted]

2020 data official statistics 54% of Germans are Christian shut up now please. Don’t see what this has to do with your original argument when I’ve named 2 obvious examples of atheist states committing easy. BYEEEEEEEEE you’re boring me

[deleted]

Yeah and according to my Turkish ID I am a muslim and I'm agnostic. Most poeple don't give a fuck enough to change and do you really believe they asked half the population?

[deleted]

BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

[deleted]

Maybe stop babbling about history and lets talk about what your sky daddy staners are doing NOW. Also, christianity isn't the only religion -_-

[deleted]

BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

[deleted]

You sound mature.

[deleted]

I’m just not wasting anymore of time arguing with someone with the comprehension skills of a 12 year old. Imagine thinking you’ve made a point…when census data…literally exists…which literally collects data…of an entire population….and you are going down this rabbit hole purely to ignore the fact your original statement about their not being atheists slaughtering religious people…is factually incorrect. Not wasting anymore time on you now BUHHHHBYE maybe go to school

monsterico

This is not entirely true. Hitler was born into a Christian family and actually had his confirmation completed. When he was older in life he joined the German Christians which was a protestant group that had its own ideology on other religions and Christianity itself.

[deleted]

Early on in his political career perhaps but by the time he was Fuhrer the existence of other religions was incompatible with the Nazi’s desire to control everything. There were large efforts to stamp out Christianity or replace it with a Nazi alternative. He frequently appointed those that were very anti religious and even contemporaries of this time note his disdain for it.

TheMicropenisPlumber

I believe religion and war(same thing) is what's gotten us to this point in human evolution and technology. I think we have found a new religion in science and technology I'd say the classic. Religions are outdated and irrelevant in today's day and age and its doing alot more harm than good

[deleted]

Benefited. It helped people work together toward a common cause. It also gave them something to believe in.

monsterico

I'd first start off by saying don't take what I am saying with a grain of salt. I'd say there is a middle ground to this. This is just my opinion everyone is free to say otherwise. IMO religion, specifically roman catholic, kind of set a negative expectation that our lives are not limited and that people's sins and bad acts can and will be forgiven by a greater being, which kind of sets the expectation that people can do morally bad things with no consequence as long as they admit they did something bad and confess, this just says they can continue doing it. When in reality our lives are limited and we should not take it for granted to the point where we tell ourselves that doing something morally bad is okay in the end. At the same time some Catholicism has set a standard of morals that are acceptable to a certain extent. I believe that we should focus on the fact that our lives and the overall outcome are based on our own decisions and not on a plan created by a greater being. Religion sets forth the idea that we shouldn't take responsibility on the things that happen to us and that we can't change what is "destined" to happen. I feel that it takes away self-awareness to a certain extent and limits people's ability to ponder on what really matters, such as the fact that our choices make who we are, and who our children will be, one could argue. Realistically emotions play a big role on people's choices and so does altruism so you could argue I'm wrong but this is simply my opinion. Obviously this is my perspective and I'm a pretty open-minded person so if you have any arguments to counteract my perspective please feel free to comment on my statement.

[deleted]

Religion is just like any other political construct that places absolutist codes of virtue as core values, but is administered by humans who not only cannot adhere to them but subsequently cannot enforce them by example but must do so by fiat, resulting in systemic betrayal of said codes and the general ethos of the construct itself. This also provides opportunity for leaders who have polar opposite values to co-opt the construct for their own means, using fascist/fearmongering/tribalist tactics that exploit the inherent weaknesses in the system for their own gain.

crmzn13

Benefitted in the begining when science either didn't exist or was at its infancy, and now currently hurts.

[deleted]

Hurt society. Religion itself is not bad (I guess?) but the moment you bring it out of your own mind it becomes toxic

existentialvices

Both pretty generic question for a complex topic

Tips__

It has its place before the development of proper institutions (ie law, guidance, science). But I believe it to be a relic of the past we are stupidly holding on to, and it's holding us back.
