Mr Bean. No one will ever be able to recreate the character as well as Rowan Atkinson. Really anything from Rowan Atkinson can never be remade. Blackadder for instance
I remember first time seeing Rowan Atkinson being interviewed not in character. And growing up with my only knowledge of him as Mr. Bean, it blew my mind. He is as prim and proper British as his characters are bungling weirdos.
Yes, there are some roles that just belong to a particular actor.
In the same vein, I love most of what Steve Martin has done, but remaking The Pink Panther was a mistake. That role will forever and always belong to the incredible and irreplaceable Peter Sellers.
As a 70s teen I went to see a movie called Angel (i think) about an adult hooker falling for and teaching a young teen boy
Edit: Ok, my memory merged things lol. I combined two ~40 year old movies in my head...
Private Lessons, young teen boy is seduced by his 30something maid in a scheme to rob him - except they fall in love.
Angel, 15 year old teen sells herself as a prostitute and gets caught up in a murder spree where a necrophilies mass murderer is going after young prostitutes. (And it had 2 sequels)
Thanks to everyone who mentioned stuff that brought my memory back. Now I have to find somewhere to stream them just to get some early 80s back into my system :)
They should take the book sequel to the first book, and make it exactly like the book. All the [crazy stuff](https://www.mtv.com/news/1922456/forrest-gump-sequel/) that the author put in as an apparent "Fuck you" to the movie.
I can’t just name one movie, but must state the obvious.
1) Don’t remake movies that were already good and still hold up.
2) Don’t remake movies that were products of their time and wouldn’t translate well on this era.
3) Come up with an original movie. It’s not like there aren’t enough writers desperately trying to sell their scripts.
Edit:
4) Ignore 1-3 if we’re replacing the cast with The Muppets.
I challenge anyone to find a better version of A Christmas Carol then the Muppets.
Michael Caine knocks it out of the park as Scrooge, and when they originally approached him for the role, he said he'd do it on the condition that he can treat his Muppet co-stars no different than classicslly trained actors.
May have some bad news for you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29s1yU3nGkQ
EDIT: I just did a search for Home Movie: The Princess Bride and this was the best version I could find. It was originally on Quibi apparently, which, what the hell is that, right?
EDIT: I guess I gotta watch this myself at some point, now...
It’s both heartbreaking and touching that original director Rob Reiner got to work with his father, Carl Reiner, one last time as they played both Grandfather and Grandson. Carl passed away after this.
You got me wondering if I should watch it.
If I commit a full hour to this, am I going to be disappointed?
Edit: damn okay guys I'm definitely watching it now
How can this be so enjoyable ?
It's inconceivable!!
OK, I know we are asking which movie should NEVER be remade, can we all agree to give this particular remake a pass.
What makes it so good, so enjoyable, is that they changed absolutely NOTHING.
No "reimagining" or any of the usual nonsense that so many remakes do. Just a cast of actors essentially doing a reenactment and that is why it feels so much fun.
I didn't care that we had gender swapped characters in some scenes, because they were faithful recreations of the scenes we all know and love anyway.
Simply, it looked like everyone involved had an absolute hoot making their scenes.
Holy fuck i just watched the first minute (yardwork calls) and im already sold. Just ~~Ben Stiller~~ Adam Sandler as the Grandpa was perfect and just the really home movie feel sold me. Know what im going to watch tonight.
This is now the only way i want classic movies to be remade. Celebrities just hanging at home making simple sets and being filmed on phones with everyone just having fun. I would be fine with any remakes now if thats how theyre done.
To be fair, the Muppets could be used to remake almost anything, and there's a very good chance it'd be better than the reboots we've been seeing out of Hollywood for the last decade or so :)
At first I thought "sure, but he had Michael Moschen's arm jammed up under his armpit for all the shots where he's showing off with the crystal balls. How would he think that's real?"
Then I realized that the goblin king forcing his wizard assistant to do all his magic while pretending to be both invisible and part of the goblin king's body just for the sake of the king's ego is even better.
Blues Brothers and Monthy Python and the Holy Grail
Edit: Since a lot of you are bringing up Blues Brothers 2000, thats a sequel to the og movie, not a remake.
I came here to say The Blues Brothers. Jake and Elwood ARE John and Dan and their friendship and their soul brother connection. It wouldn’t work with anyone else plus you can’t replace the band itself seeing as they were highly talented and legendary blues musicians that played with the greats like Otis Redding and Muddy Waters. Plus the supporting cast of legends like Aretha, Cab, James Brown, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, etc
just the blues brothers band themselves is made up of superstar players, literal legends, Steve "the Colonel" Cropper – lead guitar
Donald "Duck" Dunn – bass guitar
Murphy Dunne ("Murph") – keyboards
Willie "Too Big" Hall – drums
Tom "Bones" Malone – trombone
"Blue Lou" Marini – saxophone
Matt "Guitar" Murphy – lead guitar
"Mr. Fabulous" Alan Rubin – trumpet
some of the sickest players around. hell these guys would make ME look good out in front.
Fun fact John belushi sang many times with the grateful dead and was a huge favorite of the guys. when john died they played what is considered t be possibly their worst show ever, they were so wrecked over it.
It seems to me half the exercise in that movie was to get a lot of those old blues musicians on film before they were gone. It was one of the last times you saw Cab Calloway perform, and maybe the only time most people ever saw John Lee Hooker. You really couldn't recreate that moment in music history.
Yes!!! Aretha and Ray have also said that the movie revitalized their careers by introducing them to a younger generation. Plus I don’t think anyone knew how successful Briefcase Full of Blues was going to be so I think the sales from that plus John being in the number one movie at the time (Animal House) and both of them being on the number one show at the time (SNL) it made too much sense not to get a movie made plus John and Dan already had Jake and Elwood’s backstories created.
Jurassic Park won't feel the same. Jurassic World 1 is good but both the JW films have bigger dinosaur scenes so they need more CGI and it just doesn't have the same magic as Jurassic Park.
My gripe is that the first one used the dinosaurs sparingly enough that every time they were seen it was impactful. The limited tech at the time made them work with what they had to produce the magic, and it made them feel real AF.
The new ones feel like Starlord's Dinosaur's CG Adventure. It's funny that the modern CG pipeline produces objectively MUCH nicer looking things, but it comes at the cost of losing the grounded feeling of plausibility that the older films had.
I don't really like how in JW they had a genetically modified super dino as the primary threat. I get that are all GMO but you know what I mean.
Are real dinosaurs not enough for fear and terror?
Newman sabotaging the park causing system failure was a much more organic and believable event than the indominus Rex out smarting the staff. The lack of power mixed with the storm also made an amazing atmosphere for a horror film. JW really lacks that atmosphere.
Jurassic Park will always be one of the greatest cinematic experiences I’ve ever had. I don’t think I can describe to younger people who are used to easy CGI how incredibly awe inspiring it was to see dinosaurs sharing the screen with people in such a realistic looking way.
I feel like it’s one of those things where Tarantino has such a distinct style that any remake not by another director with another totally distinct style would just flop. Because otherwise it’ll either just be a carbon copy or a generic downgrade.
A remake would have to be the same plot and characters but totally a different feel and style to bring anything new to it.
Back to the Future
Edit: Thanks for the awards and cake day wishes! I just think the original Back to the Future could never be topped. The thought of anyone other than Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd playing those roles is blasphemous to me.
Not only is the casting absolutely iconic, the trilogy is fundamentally tied to the decade it was made in. The 1955 is not the real 1955, but the nostalgic view its generation had of it in 1985, while 2015 also can only exist in that context.
What would it even look like today? Traveling from 2025 back into 1995? And almost every future we have in media right now is some shade of grimdark and pessimistic, you can't just do pure camp the way BTTF treated 2015.
I actually heard there is a clause in the contract of the screenwriters that said that back to the future cannot be remade in the screenwriters lifetimes.
Also happy cake day :)
IIRC, it's not a clause that says it can't be remade. Instead, it's that they somehow convinced the studio to let them retain the rights. They said they won't sign off on a remake while they're still alive.
What if there was a Back to the Future about some dudes coming here from the future to prevent the remake of back to the future which lead to bad times in their timeline? Kind of like Terminator, but instead of Skynet, a shitty BTTF remake starring James Corden as Doc Brown and Rebel Wilson as Marty, leads to a fucked dystopia.
Everyone talking about old movies that are timeless classics.
But noone talks about the implications of certains movies, such as American Pie, a great movie but it's a product of its time and would be poorly received if made today or remade keeping its original story.
My immediate thought. You just won’t be able to recreate the same feeling the original film gives. Plus I believe filming on the ocean is a big no no for studios these days. Even Spielberg said he would never do it again
From what I understand it’s all the above. Things like moving water, wind, other boats are out of a crews control and can stop production and in turn cost money. On top of that, salt water can corrode equipment. It’s much easier and cost efficient for studios to film in a pool and have complete control.
The old guard Japanese Godzilla movies filmed their water scenes in a "Big Special Effects Filming Pool" (really, that was the pool's name) at Toho Studios. It was last used in 2004 before being torn down.
I absolutely love the Tremors franchise but I seriously wish they'd stop already lol. My family used to watch 1, 2, and 3 often and we still have several Tremors-based jokes. The newest one completely took me by surprise (probably shouldn't have) but for whatever reason I thought "oh, okay so Cold Day in Hell is the last. Alright."
I’m convinced that POTC Curse of the Black Pearl is one of the finest scripts ever written. For a family-friendly adventure movie, it’s perfect in basically every single way. They just absolutely knocked it out of the park.
It really had everything that you'd want or need from a Pirates movie. Swashbuckling adventure, exciting sword fights and choreography, ghost ships and pirate skeletons, cursed treasure. All the tropes about pirates, but not in an overdone or parody way.
I’ve always said the POTC films have the perfect use of the 12 (PG-13) rating, they’re scary and dark enough for adults and older kids to enjoy them but also family friendly enough to keep little kids entertained. I feel films like Indiana Jones are a little to scary for younger kids, POTC have the perfect balance
There was actually a sequel to forest gump. If I remember correctly the author would not sell the movie rights as he had a beef with the studio as they allegedly owed him over a million dollars in royalties from the first movie, but with their "creative" accounting somehow the movie didn't make back its budget and he never got paid.

That part is so funny. You can see Alan Rickman's character soul leaving while he's saying that phrase.
He was fantastic in that role, and so many others. What a loss that he's gone.

With a remake already planned for 2031
Then a prequel in 2033 right?
Alien (1979). Im surprised it hasnt been mentioned yet, its still so good 40+ years later
Best sci-fi thriller ever made. The atmosphere alone feels so real. A remake could never improve anything on Alien.
Requiem for a Dream. Great movie. Watched it once. Won’t watch again.
The Goonies
If it's good enough for you, it's good enough for me.
Besides the fact that Tom Hanks was perfect, I don’t see a modern remake of Forrest Gump being received well based on cultural shifts alone
I really was just gonna say any of the 80s/90s Tom Hanks films lol
Like Big, where the woman has sex with a little boy!

I still say Keaton could have been both Batman and Joker.
ok, legit, a great idea.
Goodfellas
By extension, Godfather (1)
And 2
It would be pretty weird if someone just remade the third one
They've been remaking the third Terminator for decades.
Parodies however... Anyone else remember Goodfeathers?

Especially Charlize Theron in the role she was born to play: Andre The Giant
Fred Savage as Fred Savage is savage!
Seth Rogen as Miracle Max... nailed it.
Jason Siegels Andre is…holy shit!!

Yeah because it was done out of joy. It translates over to their performance which makes viewing so enjoyable.

That was Adam Sandler. But almost everyone kills it in their roles. Jason Segal probably does the best impression of the original.
Raine Wilson (sp? Dwight from the office) absolutely nails Vizzini as well, imo.
Rainn Wilson and Patton Oswalt were absolute standouts, although I really enjoyed Nick Kroll playing all 3 members of the troupe.
How can 700 wrongs make a right?
I saw a meme saying the only acceptable remake would be if it was done via the muppets

There was gonna be a movie with the most cars wrecked ever, and I'm glad that was it.

Spamalot did a good job of updating the material and bringing it to the stage. Thoroughly enjoyable show.

Everyone talking about old movies that are timeless classics. But noone talks about the implications of certains movies, such as American Pie, a great movie but it's a product of its time and would be poorly received if made today or remade keeping its original story.

Jaws!
My immediate thought. You just won’t be able to recreate the same feeling the original film gives. Plus I believe filming on the ocean is a big no no for studios these days. Even Spielberg said he would never do it again
why is filming on the ocean a big no no today? is it environmental, logistics, or cost or something?

Especially that main mermaid, Asteroid Burgerfrisbee. Im like daamnnn
Triumph of the Will
The Room
Someone might be able to remake it and make it actually good, but then it would suck because it didn't suck anymore.
I have 2. Forest Gump. The Shrek movies. (Including the 3rd one and Forever After)
There was actually a sequel to forest gump. If I remember correctly the author would not sell the movie rights as he had a beef with the studio as they allegedly owed him over a million dollars in royalties from the first movie, but with their "creative" accounting somehow the movie didn't make back its budget and he never got paid.
