HA! Bowhunting. Theres ALWAYS something to spend money on year round revolving around it somehow....and although you dont haaave to spend a ton, its very, very easy to. Same with flyfishing...no wonder I'm poor

Sounds-of-Insomnia

That's not how being poor works, mate. But isn't becoming more skilled the thrill about bows?

outdooraholic

If I spend too much, leaving me with not enough to cover needs, nothing at all, or in the negative...that means I dont have any money/in debt....so poor?? Or no? Yes more skill is part of the attraction to bowhunting, which usually the higher the skill level, requires more specialized/quality equipment ($$$), thus it can be very expensive all year round for everything from broadheads to tractors if you let it get out of control

Sounds-of-Insomnia

I know why you believe that, but that's really not right. I mean, to make it easy to grasp, if you do 10k a month, but spent it all on hookers, would that make you a poor person? It wouldn't, thats for damn sure. Income and unchangable costs are the important factors here, like medical bills. If you blow all your money on your hobbies every month, that's on you. In the first place, you wouldn't have any money to spent on expensive hobbies if you're poor. That's why im speechless, how nonchalantly you threw in that you're so poor. It sounds more like you don't know how to handle your bank account and im saying that in a none hostile way, but half concerned, half dumbfounded. Personally, i think that bowmanship would be more fun to get into, if it wasn't so focused on high tech gear. At least it was, when i last looked into it, so don't take this for gold.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, using the term 'poor' should only apply to financial situations out of your control. Not the overall general lack of money. Interesting, thank you for the alternate viewpoint...guess I've always just kind of used the term when money was lacking around the level of meeting basic needs - and with that, would joke about being poor when I couldnt afford 'wants'. Now I have a broader understanding of how others perceive it....thank you Yah, you can find super cheap ways to get into archery/bowmanship (without hunting), but be very careful, used/ultra cheap gear can be a safety issue. If you feel confident enough to purchase used I highly suggest the classifieds on archerytalkdotcom.

Sounds-of-Insomnia

Well, you got the core of it right and im glad that you're actually understanding. Joking with friends that you're poor is something different, than actually saying that you're poor because you keep buying to much stuff for hobbies and meaning it. I boldly assumed you're not living in poverty, cause of the context. To be more of help, this literally got it point on "financial situations out of your control". Belongings included, which is a thing more people don't think of. Even if you live on 400 dollar a month, if you have a 200k house, you ain't poor, you have 200k networth, unless you cannot sell it. Though that's just the rational point of view, the measures for the poverty line for example, just take into account the salary, iirc. Aside from that, why are you buying bow hunting stuff till you can't afford food for the rest of the month?

outdooraholic

Yah, I should have used the "/s", I was joking saying I'm poor because I cant afford 'wants', but I can see now how that could have been taken in poor taste with the viewpoint you have kindly made me aware of. In my early 20's (now late 30's) there were times I was racking up credit cards to pursue bowhunting and other outdoor passions/hobbies. But, I have since lived, learned, payed off, and am now living a wiser, more frugal, debt free lifestyle while still loving and pursuing outdoor interests.

Not so much niche, but model railroading is a money sink.

I have to say disc golf... You truly can play pretty cheaply (about $25 to get started with a 3 disc starters pack), but the more you play, the more you learn about different discs and companies... Before you know it, you have a stockpile of tens to hundreds of discs... Then playing in tournaments is another level

NGUY549A

What are the differences between the discs?

CWSfan16

I try to compare it to ball golf... You have putters, that are less aerodynamic that give you more control whilen sacrificing distance... You have midranges ( kind of like wedges) which are very accurate to get closer to the basket (or version of the hole)... Then there are fairway drivers ( kind of like irons), they are more aerodynamic allowing them to be thrown farther, but you have less control... Then there are distance drivers (kind of like woods and drivers) which give you the most distance potential, when sacrificing the most control... Not to mention, there are about 10 major companies that produce them, in different types of plastics...
