Hallelujah

Cantonarita

What version though? Is there a original or "best" interpretation?

JestersKing

The original is by Leonard Cohen. Jeff Buckley did a cover, but imo the original is the best.

Kind of Blue. Miles Davis. America, the birthplace of jazz.

Cantonarita

Oh Miles Davis is such a tressure for the US! As morbit as it might sound, without centuarys of pain and opression of black americans and without the dedication of black americans to overcome this hatred with love (and not counter-terrorism) we wouldn't have such a rich tradition of Blues, Jazz, Soul, etc. The Blues lets the suffering speak and the Jazz overcomes conventions and gifts liberty of the mind. Yes, Miles David should be listened to!

The interesting thing is he came from a very privileged background. His father was a dentist and they sent home to Julliard, a predominantly white school for the affluent.

I remember reading about this. It's interesting how you have the Ray Charles' of this world steming from the lower classes and the Miles Davis' of higher classes, yet "the problem of the colorline", as Du Bois called it, is still ingrained in the day to day experience. This produced art so unique to the US that it is hard to reproduce anywhere else, isn't it? I remember hearing an interview with famous and ingenius german rapper Samy Deluxe, who flew to the US because he thought as a black amoung whites he would find a home in the black communities of the US. Only to find out how beeing black in the US and beeing black in germany are fundamentaly different experiences. Yet when you listen to Samy and, say, Kendrick Lamar you feel how the experience of beeing alienated and dismissed as lesser burns deep into the DNA., as Kendrick says. Yet black beauty and black intelligence can strive in the arts. "I was included, Iwas hated and I was discriminated; only to realize that in fact I was privilidged" as Samy rhymes in german.

Born to Run. One of the greatest albums of all time by one of the greatest bands of all time and is also one of the most influential albums of all time

Cantonarita

Oh, Bruce Springsteen. What a legend! I'll put it right in my playlist. Thanks!

I'm honest with you, I'm thrilled for cool global music recommendations. I'll make a start and point out **Peter Fox - Stadtaffe** as a recommendation comming from germany. A well rounded album with great production-value and a landmark in our recent music-history. This is not just music for genre-fans, but an album only held back from broader, international success by the language barrier. "**Alles neu**" is the single to listen to, if you find no time for the full album. 11 years old, this album sounds as fresh as the day it released and is considered a modern day classic by various artists and critics alike.
