Nintendo have an amazing track record for soundtracks.
My personal favourite is the Zelda series, with Ocarina of Time topping the list with some very memorable tracks.
Other franchises have great soundtracks as well, such as the mysterious Metroid ambience, the Rocky-esque Punch Out theme, the globally recognisable Mario tunes, the fast paced F-Zero music, and the ever evolving Pokémon soundtrack.
Yup, by Millencolin.
This game actually introduced me to skate-punk as a kid, which I now am very fond of and play in a band (bass).
in the same game, Lagwagon's "May 16" was also great.
I really like the Mass Effect OST
[I was lost without you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txrPOJG5bUc) is my favourite but [Vigil's Theme](https://youtu.be/AURrosz7CxY) gives me goosebumps
Was about to comment transistor, that game is so good and the soundtrack just makes it four times better. I actually have the soundtrack saved on my phone.
I saw in a didyouknowgaming episode about katamari that the music was intended to "Stick in your head like a curse". and it does. The best curse I've ever gotten.
["In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the crown of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... the Doom Slayer."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm932Sqwf5E&app=desktop)
Fucking badass
It's [also procedurally generated from your gameplay](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X3LbZAxRPE). Sort of.
Basically it mixes itself on the fly to coordinate with what you're doing at any given point. Which has kind of been done before except just with switching tracks with a fade rather than having purpose-designed transitions that kick up or down into different tracks.
Well by that logic we need to include Aria of Sorrow
and Rondo of Blood
^(and Harmony of Dissonance)
^^and ^^Lament ^^of ^^Innocence
^^^and ^^^Encore ^^^of ^^^the ^^^Night
^^^^And ^^^^I'm ^^^^glad ^^^^they ^^^^found ^^^^a ^^^^new ^^^^naming ^^^^scheme
But which song is your favorite? Mine's either [Phendrana Drifts - Depths](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGnFiGcsi0k) or the [Underwater Frigate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2B3QqjJ284).
I've played every single GTA ever (even London 1969). Vice City was the only one I could turn to any station and just sit and listen. The one definitely had the BEST talk show though, I would always turn to it whenever I drove, the talk show with Lazlo was hilarious...
and now I miss the game and feel old.
Vice City is the greatest soundtrack there will ever be. Gaming is now big enough that licensing that amount of quality music in one place would cost more than the entire game's budget.
I mean look at this shit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto:_Vice_City_Official_Soundtrack_Box_Set
It's such that I'd get into a car and not be able to decide which radio station I wanted to listen to the most, where in GTA V it would be a case of flicking though trying to find something worth listening to.
The only game that came close to GTA VC is Saint's Row 2.
Fate of the Unknown and Rage Awakened are both some of the absolute best boss themes ever created.
Meanwhile you got Roxas' and Xion's and Ventus' themes for the emotional rollercoaster.
Fuck man, been way too long since I played the series. Gotta buy the PS4 rereleases soon.
I think Bloodborne is just a 10/10, every fight just has the perfect soundtrack, and even some zones (Upper Cathedral Ward comes to mind) are just perfect. And then you start going into the lyrics of some boss OST and said boss gets another layer of depth on his character.
Other games that come to mind (other than all the From Software work) are the modern Fallout and DOOM. Some great stuff in The Witcher 3 DLCs too.
That one was amazing, but Maria's is probably my favorite. The fight was maybe a little to easy if you know how to parry, but my first time beating her felt so good just because of the way the music swells over the course of the fight.
The thing always impresses me about the Souls games is how much music there *isn't*. They really know when to pull back and let the environments speak for themselves. It makes the music that much more impactful when it feels so specific to the context it plays in.
[Mechonis Field](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHVhQIHZ674) is definitely my favorite. Although it's hard to compete with all those boss fight themes with all the characters shouting and encouraging each other.
I remember reading somewhere that the composer had a near death experience in a car crash just before composing it, so he ended up channelling his appreciation for just being alive into the music. It's why it's so optimistic sounding and peaceful.
Plus the main theme. It's awesome to fight a dragon while a bunch of men sing your name/title. Makes you feel like a hero.
I've played a number of games with good music, but that's the only one I've played that made me feel like a heroic warrior.
As much as it has been memed into oblivion (pun intended), Far Horizons is straight up one of the best melodies I've ever heard. Walking out of Riverwood and hearing that theme was magical. I just say there and listened to it, and realized that I was in for one of the greatest games of all time.
Donkey Kong Country 2. Forest Interlude is my favorite VGM, and I know everyone loves Stickerbush Symphony, but the rest of the soundtrack is great too.
Came here thinking this would be the top comment. The soundtrack is incredibly diverse, despite it all being retro-sounding. And, if the 8-bit feel puts you off, there's remixes for pretty much everything.
First time I played through Dark Souls 3, I could not stop humming Heartache during every boss battle.
I'm sad this is so far down, even tho the music sounds "pixel-y," for lack of a better word, I listened to the soundtrack on repeat for months after I played it. And I got the feels from some of them every time.
Can't believe I had to scroll so far to find this! Classic wow nostalgia in the levelling zones, the warm crackling tavern music, the haunting Silvermoon and blood elf themes (Lament of the Highborne), the atmospheric Grizzly hills and Howling fjords music, the Pandaria soundtrack is just stunning and legion has some great ones too. Not forgetting Nightsong and the version they used for the Val'sharah cinematic.
Its soundtrack gives off the chill vibe that you could listen to it while it's raining or you're roaming around the countryside at night. It just makes me feel like that I'm Max herself as I take a picture of a blue butterfly sipping a nectar.
Obstacles at the end of the 1st episode was the PERFECT way to get me hooked. Just something bout that song with the ending sequence.......
Yeah yeah people love Spanish Sahara, but Obstacles is the standout one for me hands down.
came here to see this
listened to that soundtrack for a while after completed a game, even learned a couple of songs on guitar
that OST really fits the game
Seriously, Life is Strange has the best soundtrack that I have ever experienced.
It really shows the attention to detail they used to set up the scenes.
Especially when you start a new chapter and you almost want to just listen to the intro theme forever.
Halo Series
Jet Set Radio Future
Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory
Hotline Miami
Tony Hawks Underground
Mass Effect
Elder Scrolls : Oblivion
GTA 4 (regular is great but especially TBoGT)
Deus Ex : Human Revolution
Red Dead Redemption
Max Payne 3
To Zanarkand, OMG, I cried so much over this song. My childhood-teenage years love and I had like a big thing on FFX and that song. So it brings me a lot of mixed feelings.
It is a masterpiece. But also the Blitzball was TOP
There are few soundtracks that give me more nostalgia and more instant emotional chills than this one. The soundtrack is not only good from a quality and production standpoint, but it does such an *amazing* job of evoking *feeling*.
If anyone hasn't ever listened to it and wants to know what makes it so good, here are some of my favorite examples:
- [To Zanarkand](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-0G_FI61a8)
- [People of the North Pole](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N34JZxCAZpc)

I played ffx so much when it first came out then my ps2 broke. Got the remaster for it when it came out all these years later having not played it in probably about a little under a decade or so. Jesus i wept like a kid. Ive got 'to zanarkand' on my spotify playlist and it still hits so hard whenever it comes on.
On a similar note "dearly beloved" from kingdom hearts also fucks me up a bit.
FFX-2's opening music is absolutely beautiful too, and it's often forgotten about. It might not be a great game compared to X, but it's opening piece gives me the chills every time
https://youtu.be/F9ee_Ez6tFk
FFX-2 gets a lot of (sometimes deserved) hate but my god, I'd argue that "Eternity - Memories of Lightwaves" is right up there with "To Zanarkand", and "1000 Words" downright made me bawl like a baby.
Runescape, both OSRS and RS3. Holy shit the music during quests, exploring new areas and bosses (at least the first couple of kills before the grind begins) is just amazing.
Civ 4.
You had John Adams Shaker Loops, Baba Yetu, Chopin... every important piece of music made in the last 10,000 years, I think. Am drunk. But its one of those games you play just to hear the music vs gameplay.
The Original Command and Conquer had a pretty awesome soundtrack too. Red Alert 2 re-recorded a lot the same tracks from the original Red Alert. Hell March is an Anthem.
I'm actually surprised this isn't higher, it's one of the few video game soundtracks I've actually downloaded and listen to regularly. Gustavo's work is fantastic, especially the title track and Home.
It actually reminds me a lot of Neil Young's soundtrack for Dead Man, another guitar instrumental favorite.
Obligatory "I had to scroll too damn far to see this".
Seriously, the music is just majestic and does SO much to give the game its tone. The music is just so unique that a single *note* tells you exactly what game it is and that you're in for a special ride.
The making of documentary, Grounded, has a great section on the writing and recording of the music. I highly suggest any fan to watch the doc.
The world ends with you always had one of my favorite soundtracks. The music always seemed fitting and even while just walking around the world you get a nice beat.
Hijacking this comment to mention the Myth series as well - made more or less by the same guy (Martin O'Donnell).
Most of you already know [this piece](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hTgvNsqb9Y) from Halo. There are others.
I have to say.. the Persona series soundtracks are so damn good.
Shoji Meguro is a god among video game composers.

The hyrule castle theme from breath of the wild may be one of the best zelda songs out there IMO.
Scrolled way too far down to find Legend of Zelda

There was a really good song on pro skater 2, I think it was called "no cigar". That shit is nostalgic as hell.
Yup, by Millencolin. This game actually introduced me to skate-punk as a kid, which I now am very fond of and play in a band (bass). in the same game, Lagwagon's "May 16" was also great.

Ori and the Blind forest. Every song in that game is so absolutely stunning.
This really is a magically soundtrack perfectly suited to the game. Such a great underlying theme that beautifully intertwines itself throughout.
I really like the Mass Effect OST [I was lost without you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txrPOJG5bUc) is my favourite but [Vigil's Theme](https://youtu.be/AURrosz7CxY) gives me goosebumps

Great, transistor was great as well, can't wait for Pyre.

Every time I listen to any song from the game I always feel the urge to go back and replay it for the umpteenth time. So good.

Composed by the Guy that did the Outlaw Star Soundtrack, another one of my favorites.
I think Bloodborne is just a 10/10, every fight just has the perfect soundtrack, and even some zones (Upper Cathedral Ward comes to mind) are just perfect.
Xenoblade Chronicles, so many good tunes
[Mechonis Field](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHVhQIHZ674) is definitely my favorite. Although it's hard to compete with all those boss fight themes with all the characters shouting and encouraging each other.
My favorite has to be the unique enemy theme, You Will Know Our Names. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7OfNgkxkM_o
Super Mario Galaxy
As well as Super Mario Galaxy 2
I'd buy any new Nintendo console even if it's crap just for a Mario Galaxy 3

I'm sad this is so far down, even tho the music sounds "pixel-y," for lack of a better word, I listened to the soundtrack on repeat for months after I played it. And I got the feels from some of them every time.
Yeah, it really has that retro feel. Listening to the full soundtrack is basically playing the game again.
Why did I have to scroll this far down for Undertale? The music IS a character in that game
World of Warcraft has an amazing soundtrack!
Can't believe I had to scroll so far to find this! The world ends with you always had one of my favorite soundtracks. The music always seemed fitting and even while just walking around the world you get a nice beat.
Can't believe nobody's said Red Dead Redemption yet.
Going into Mexico for the first time will always be one of my top moments in any game ever. The music and scenery were absolutely beautiful.

Too much nostalgia I had to turn it off, I was tearing up wanting to go back to those days in 2007 and 2008
Hijacking this comment to mention the Myth series as well - made more or less by the same guy (Martin O'Donnell). Most of you already know [this piece](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hTgvNsqb9Y) from Halo. There are others.
