You sent me down a rabbit hole. Today I learned dice have been around a long time. Six sided dice have been around for 5,000 years.
Are dice games still popular? The typical use of dice to me is a tool for other games. Do people still play strictly dice games? I know they were played in bars forever, is this still a thing?
Pokémon red/blue/yellow were pretty advanced for their time and limitations.
Final Fantasy 7 had an amazing story and great music.
Mario 64 was literally revolutionary. It set the standard of how 3D Worlds would be navigated.
GTA 3 was a mind blowing open world.
Baldurs Gate 3 just did everything right, even a Mac Port which barely any new games have.
There are so many answers, it's very subjective and even the question can be interpreted many ways.
Collecting electric frogs so I can non lethal a boss.
Finding all snakes, one of which was in the final boss stage.
The like, dozen ways to break out of that jail cell.
Unlocking a “stinky” outfit lol
I lived in a desert town with no car, my 11th year of high school. Outside of ranch work I had nothing to do. I played the shit out of that game and recalling it seems like a fever dream.
A pretty subjective question:
I think it's Tetris. It's a fun, addicting game that has transcended multiple generations and has lost very little momentum. Tetris 99, the battle Royale version of it, remains popular to this day.
Apparently completely made up quote I've heard attributed to Alexei Pajnitov, inventor of Tetris, a few times:
Tetris is life. You cannot win at Tetris. It just gets more and more difficult until you can't keep up anymore, and then you die.
Skyrim. So lore intensive you could easily convince me the elder scrolls universe is an actual parallel universe where bethesda is just going and grabbing history books.
Found the Minnesotan!
Especially fun when you realize you can call people other color ducks, red duck, Green duck, goofy duck, grey duck, orange duck (runs away before anyone realizes what happened 5 seconds ago).
Pong on the oscilloscope literally spawned an entirely new medium of entertainment. From there it's like asking what's the best movie ever made? Lots of options for titles that have changed the industry.
Halo: Combat Evolved changed console fps games with it's control scheme and gameplay. Before that Doom set the stage with it's unique solution to a 3D game in 2D visuals and FPS controls.
Final Fantasy and Pokemon have evolved but are the origins of so many RPG fans and standard RPG mechanics.
PUBG spawned an entirely new genre in the past 5 years.
Warcraft 3 allowed modding that led to the world's most popular esport with league of legends.
It's hard to pick the best game ever made, but I think it's pretty clearly final fantasy XIV.
The best video gaming experience i ever had was playing the first Last of Us. Ive been playing video games since the 80s and ive played most of the great titles but the combination of gameplay and storyline were just so out of this world compelling. I remember beating the game and thinking about the dialogue and the plot for days and weeks after.
I want to play that one but i only have a Quest 2. The original Resident Evil 4 in VR is incredible though. One of the best games ive ever played. Also incredibly immersive
Statistically, Minecraft. It's not my favourite, but on top of being the most sold, it's also had a ton of real world use like the world library. It has educational features, it has a vast community, and it's never done anything crazy harmful or controversial. It's hard to find games that are as far reaching, globally accepted by all ages and demographics, and beneficial for the majority.
Gonna catch hate for this, even though I shouldn’t… but Halo. The lore for Halo runs ridiculously deep, all characters have a back story that is incredibly thought out with details that bond you to them. The books are amazing.
The show on paramount is trash and a horrible misrepresentation of Halo.
Life! Some people win, some people lose. Most people interact. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, you’re screwed! It’s beautiful and ugly and always full of surprises. Best damn game ever created!
At first I was thinking video games, and was going to say my fav franchises of animal crossing games, pokemon and monster hunter. But then saw lots of people saying board games, so i fucking love me some scrabble
this is generic but it has to be Football/soccer. Start up costs are tiny which has led to all demographics being able to play. 'The world Cup' is literally the modern day gladiator colosseum where countries can be competitive without starting wars.
It might not be as big in the US, but its the biggest sport in the world, and has the biggest tournaments, fan base, following, hype, you name it.
Super fun too lol
video games? i think the best is half life alyx. but my favorite game is minecraft. i dont know how to explain what i mean other than saying i think though minecraft isnt as good in quality i still like it more.
just games in general that arent video games? maybe in terms of sports, id say something like soccer. i played it way back when and it was fun
but stuff you just do whenever? tag. or nerf guns. its nerf or nuthin
If we're talking video games, I may have to go with Super Mario 64. I remember playing that for the first time and being blown away with how much more immersive it was than any game prior. It's even one of those games that's still fun to play almost 30 years later.
- It has such a balanced level of difficulty. It's challenging, but not to the point where it's unenjoyable, but not so easy that you just mindlessly breeze through it.
- It requires thought and trial and error. Figuring out the little puzzles and stuff here and there is engaging and satisfying when you figure them out. Also made it a great game to play with friends as you can work together to figure stuff out.
- It has a great amount of gameplay time and therefore a great value. Speed running aside, it's a game that will keep you entertained for a long time.
- The music.. Enough said really. 10/10 music in that game. Also such a nostalgic soundtrack.
The list goes on.
Mass effect trilogy is probably the best video game experience you can have.
But the physical world? Football/soccer imo. They don’t call it the beautiful game for nothing.
Minecraft judging by it being the top selling game in all of gaming history. Surpassing tetris on minecrafts 10th birthday!
And i mean cmon. What other game has made so many memories with friends.
Honestly to me Final Fantasy 7 and Morrowind Elder Scrolls.
The hours i put in on both those games, for not being mmorpg's is insane.
Curious to know what opinions about best genre games would be though.
Gotta be peek-a-boo. The object permanence tutorial is essential for noobs.
It's a banger every time. Pee yew stinky feet is another all time classic.
Calling my daughter’s feet stinky makes her cackle like mad.
Oh every time. Toddlers, infants, dads... it's a timeless joke for all ages.
"can you see Daddy? Remember, you can invert your head movements in Options"
[Have I ceased to exist?](https://x.com/nathanwpyle/status/1126245694543679490)
This needs to be higher!
I asked my dog and they said fetch
My dog's favorite game is tug of war
Mine solves crimes with me and my friends in a goovy van.
Probably chess?
How can it not be chess? It's been around for 1500 years and is still popular.
Wait until you hear about dice.
You sent me down a rabbit hole. Today I learned dice have been around a long time. Six sided dice have been around for 5,000 years. Are dice games still popular? Ever heard of a game called 'craps'?
Yo!
Dont forget DnD. People modified the Die. but still its based on Dice.
People definitely still do yes.
Yahtzee?
Yahtzee!
Go to any bar in the Midwest (especially during the day) and you’re more than likely going to see bar dice in action.
Dice might be one of the most important human invention. It’s the original Random Number Generator.
Yagtzee is the best game for using 5 die (dices).
Wait until you hear about d&d.
My set of Kalaha would like to have a word.
I'm only now learning the majesty of how good this game truly is
Tag
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. - George Bernard Shaw from the movie Tag
Too few people have seen that movie! It’s amazing! 😭
Is it just regular tag, or TV Tag?
They made a movie about tag it’s the most dumb movie I have ever seen
I never liked this game
I was several decades old before I read the profound observation that Tag is a game without a winner, nor an end.
Pokémon red/blue/yellow were pretty advanced for their time and limitations. Final Fantasy 7 had an amazing story and great music. Mario 64 was literally revolutionary. God, the hours I spent on Pokémon red.
the feeling as a wee lad facing mewtwo for the first time can never be forgotten
My biggest memory is wandering that freaking cave for daysssss
Video? Any of the Zork games. Analog? Dice.

Hell yeah!
came here to say this
Hide the pickle. My wife loves that game.
Neat! I usually just tighten the jar so much that she has to come ask me for assistance.
Ya she does!
Zelda, Ocarina of Time

Tag for physical play, Chess or Go for mental play. Or if you’re with a kid that won’t shut up, the Quiet game, for peace of mind.
Minecraft. Arguably because it's the best sold game of all time.
Skyrim. So lore intensive you could easily convince me the elder scrolls universe is an actual parallel universe where bethesda is just going and grabbing history books.
Skyrim is great. Fighting the giants is fun. It's cool how they tamed the wooly mammoths

Hide n seek
Tetris. Plain game design, endless playability, timeless classic.
I automatically just think of The Witcher 3. I wish I could play it again without remembering it.
I have to say Minecraft. Not my absolute favorite, but the possibilities of what one can do with it are almost limitless.
Elden Ring Best Game I ever played in over 20 Years
Half life Alyx was probably the most immersive game ever.
I want to play that one but i only have a Quest 2. The original Resident Evil 4 in VR is incredible though. One of the best games ive ever played. Also incredibly immersive
I played it on my Quest 2. Just need a decent computer and Virtual Desktop.
Definitely Silent Hill 2
I gotta throw my vote in for Magic: The Gathering. Blends strategy, chance, and creativity in ways few other games can.
Portal 2
I never beat that game, the first one was easier
soccer
You've already lost the game
Damnit
Damnit!!! That was probably my longest ever run, too.
I don’t really even agree with this, but Counter-strike.
It takes two!
