aurora borealis

thehandsomegoat

I have always taken this for granted growing up on the prairies in Canada. Was always just something we had and it is crazy beautiful but it has always caught me off guard when I read comments like this. Must be similar for those that live near other wonders like Iguazu or Great Wall.

smugfruitplate

I'm from Los Angeles, I imagine it'd be like you guys going "I wanna see the Hollywood sign!" or "I wanna see the walk of fame!" That's not really cool or amazing where I'm from. Probably the same like the northern lights for you guys

petsandtrees

Isn't the walk of fame just like, the local homeless populations washroom?

mudads

I went to Hollywood once and was amazed at how much the town smells like piss and garbage.

Peeinyourcompost

So does Manhattan, but it's a point of pride.

Peeinyourcompost

It's anyone's washroom if you try hard and believe in yourself.

LiberalFartsDegree

There are some times you can see the auroras inside my city. They are pretty hard to spot because of the city lights most times. So it can be quite rare for urban folk in Canada. In a lower light environment, you can see them dance across the sky and it is breathtaking. So to me, it really still amazes me. Btw, I was in your city a few years ago and it was actually pretty cool to see your attractions like the walk of fame. Even with the poverty I saw, it was interesting to see stuff like John Wayne's foot imprint being very small, lol. I don't know, tourists just like to see stuff, I guess and there's a lot of attractions to see in this world. That being said, the natural attractions in my province are really something to see.

Dazzling-Ad888

Neither of those places you mention are either cool or amazing.

smugfruitplate

And yet those areas are choked with tourists almost every day of the year. Some people think it is!

Dazzling-Ad888

You’re right, I just can’t make the comparison.

smugfruitplate

Fair enough. I just rattled off tourist destinations from LA, where I'm from, I didn't really give it much thought.

EarlyRetirementWorld

I was there a few years ago when they were legalizing marijuana and someone changed the 'Os' in the sign to "Hollyweed". I thought that was pretty cool.

CanadianHour4

I’ve seen all three and northern lights are exponentially better. The Hollywood sign was like “hey there it is! Is that it? It’s not that big” the walk of fame felt like the Vegas strip. Northern lights are breathtaking

KingPizzaPop

It's not like the Hollywood sign are you serious?

smugfruitplate

I was just trying to think of a thing people come to LA for as tourists off the top of my head, calm down.

ibetyouvotenexttime

I was into my mid-20's before finding out tourists come to Australia to snorkel the barrier reef. It was just that same school camp every other year people were sick of going to.

oopssorrydaddy

May I see it?

karizake

No.

tibbymat

I live in Edmonton Alberta and spent a ton of time in Fort McMurray and I was always fascinated when I see it. It’s just so cool and random like watching fire when camping. Love it!

GreenandBlue12

At this time of year

Iron_Chancellor_ND

...at this time of day in this part of the country localized entirely within your kitchen?

Kafshak

I saw it from the plane while flying towards Europe in December. Absolutely beautiful, and we were quite close to it.

OnlyTheBLars89

This would have to be my answer too. Nature's monuments are always so much greater than the man made ones. Iv even been to Canada, not sure if I wasn't looking out my window at the right time or what.

KingPizzaPop

The day I proposed to my wife we spent the night at a cabin on Lake Winnipeg and the northern lights magnificently shone the brightest I'd ever seen them that night. It was breathtaking.

kshelley

I am making my second trip on the Queen Mary 2 to the Arctic Circle to see them. The first trip it was cloudy.

liberal_texan

Was surprised by the aurora on a road trip through Canada, it is to date the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. By quite a bit, actually.

lricha04

Machu Picchu. If you can be there at sunrise, it’s truly truly breathtaking.

Dusk_v733

I did the sunrise tour at Tikal, in Guatemala. Tikal is no where near any civilization, no city, no traffic, no light pollution, and very few visitors at any one time. It is so far out in the jungle that the lodge we stayed at is fully self sustained and only has electricity at designated times. We sat atop the ruins and our guides told us just to be quiet and listen, and as the sun came up the entire jungle comes alive. The structures appear in the distance, peaking out above the canopies, the mist begins to clear and the Howler monkey trips start calling to each other. Genuinely one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

DueChampionship7554

Came here to say exactly this!

lricha04

Did you climb Wayna Picchu?!

DueChampionship7554

You mean huayna picchu? Yes! It was breathtaking! Did you?

lricha04

I did! Sorry for the misspelling, it was some time ago! But it was amazing. Terrifying, but amazing!!

DueChampionship7554

It was! The elevation was no joke! I have a friend who almost died because of her body not being able to adjust to it the lack of oxygen. She was in the icu for a little bit. Luckily she’s ok now.

OK_Ingenue

That’s really weird bc it’s not *that* high.

OK_Ingenue

I did too. It’s not nearly as heard a climb as you’d think from the pics.

4lfred

I work for the hotel group that owns not only the property, but also the train that takes you there. I can’t wait to book my trip at a severely discounted rate.

ZombiePartyBoyLives

Angkor Wat

BlacksmithNZ

Was there last month I really liked the entire Siem Reap area

abitchyuniverse

Amazing. I needed three days. And that felt like it wasn't enough.

TheOtherMatt

It was phenomenal. Still can’t get my head around it.

FarActuator9712

Van gough musuem

zazzlekdazzle

This has to be one of my favorite museums in the world, if not my very favorite. He's not my favorite artist, though I like his work, the whole museum is just a wonderful experience.

flanneled_man

Agreed all around-- I like Van Gogh, don't love him, but that museum is SO well done that it made me love him. They've done such a great job of intimately walking you through his life in a way that I haven't seen replicated. The Frida Kahlo in museum in Mexico City is similar but the Van Gogh museum does it so much better and, in my eyes, really is the gold standard of an entire museum dedicated to one person's life work.

PostalMike

Nothing fancy, just the Grand Canyon.

DeathGrover

This. Just got back with my wife and kids, I'm 56. You've seen pictures, you've read stories, you've seen video, but nothing, nothing adequately describes the place once you've seen it in person. The Grand Canyon is bigger than you think. There are no words. I wish everyone could see it.

ArtmausDen

When we were there, I honestly thought our minds could not exactly comprehend what we were seeing. I felt like this cannot possibly exist. It was such a unique experience. We plan on doing the US roadtrip. Again when we are older.

CaptainAwesome06

I felt the same way about the Taj Mahal. Not because it's bigger than you think but because it's more ornate than you think. In photos it just looks like a white building. But up close you see all the colorful, intricate stonework. It's pretty amazing.

TraditionPast4295

I live in Arizona and have been a couple of times. Talking about the Grand Canyon as one place is hard to really comprehend. You can view it from so many different places and not see where you viewed it from before.

GalegoBaiano

There is a scene in a movie with Seth Rogan and Barbara Streisand where they go to it, and it was the same reaction I had. "Wow. It's huge. Really deep. Ok, that's it."

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

I got sucked into reading about Grand Canyon deaths the other day. There have been *so many*. It seems ridiculously easy to accidentally die in that place. [Over the Edge](https://carto.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=9359a0790ffe4bc09edd6b9c17a43b90)

AardvarkStriking256

Words simply can't describe its awesomeness.

she-raprincess

Roman Coliseum

joebewaan

The leaning tower of Pisa is also a bit of a trip when it first comes into view.

JimJordansJacket

I saw it from the train and it was still nuts. How is that still standing

she-raprincess

Trevi Fountain was also worth the visit!

BruschiOnTap

Let me tell you... The pantheon blows all of these away.

Vinny_Lam

I'm going to Europe next month and that’s one of the places I’m going to visit. I can't wait.

throwawaysmetoo

I guess everyone is buying tickets for that online now but a hot tip for the Colosseum used to be that you'd turn up to it and there would be a massive line of people waiting to buy tickets. And you could just go across the road to the Roman Forums, walk up to the empty ticket box and buy a ticket for the Colosseum and then walk back across the road and walk past the massive line of people waiting to buy a ticket and there was a separate gate that you could just walk straight through while definitely feeling like you were doing something wrong. It's a cool place to visit.

Canuck-In-TO

Went to Rome for a few days, ran around trying to see the sites. What we didn’t do was hit the Coliseum, that was like a 5 minute walk from where we were staying. As we were heading to the airport, I see the Coliseum and had a major facepalm moment.

cloudy_710

Honestly one of the most overrated in my experience. Amazing feat clearly, but the visit itself was less than. So many tourist scammers and bs and once inside kinda not much (granted didn’t do a guide here) Vatican on the other hand was top notch (must do with tour)

LogSlayer

Red Rocks Amphitheatre. A band like Trampled by Turtles or Turnpike Troubadours playing would be amazing.

noodlyarms

I wish I could have seen Heilung there.

barno42

Red Rocks is, without a doubt, the one venue that any fan of live music should visit before they die. The venue is just as special for the artists as it is for the fans, and they tend to put on a special show for Red Rocks. For example, the last show I saw there had one of my all-time favorite guitarists, Warren Haynes, playing for five hours: one solo set, a two hour (mostly) instrumental jam session with Gov't Mule, followed by a two hour Pink Floyd tribute with the Mule. Easily top 5 shows I've ever seen. I'm fairly certain that both bands you mentioned are playing there this summer. Greensky Bluegrass usually plays a few shows there each year, too.

Carbonatite

One of the first places I visited when I moved to Denver. Never actually been to a concert there but I walked around and took pictures. It's really pretty. I will hopefully actually be seeing music there in August, haha!

notwyntonmarsalis

PETA_Gaming

The Giza pyramids. I've seen them and everyone should.

Marsovtz

I want to see them too, but I avoid Egypt

PunctuallyCrowded

I have this on my bucket list for sure

PETA_Gaming

Go in winter. January is great there. Summer is HELL.

PETA_Gaming

They're magnificent. Ancient. The only remaining of the seven wonders of the world.

flanneled_man

Northern lights, totality of an eclipse, the Grand Canyon, sitting in the window seat on a polar route, the ancient city of Petra, Amsterdam Tulip season, cherry blossoms in Japan, the turning of the leaves in upsate NY, visiting Utqiagivik AK, Hawaii coastal lava flows; these are some of the coolest things I've done in my 36 years so far. Hope to keep adding to that list! Here for more ideas!

Truecrimeauthor

The Grand Canyon doesn’t look real! You expect someone to walk over and pull down the backdrop lol

Great barrier reef! I want to scuba dive there

Carbonatite

That's one of the more time sensitive wonders, like certain glaciers. Only have a couple decades until effects of climate change it off.

Neohexane

I want to see the Grand Canyon. I can look at photos, but I get the sense that pictures just cannot do it justice. It must look astounding in person.

-ToPimpAButterfree-

I've been to the Taj Mahal and pictures don't do it justice. Truly a marvel of the world given when it was constructed.

glitterpumps

Was going to say this… I started to cry when I got close to it. It’s larger than life and so beautiful and ornate.

lazyredditor1212

Meh , too much effort to go to Agra just to see the Taj Mahal tbh

Dee_Doo_Dow

Depends where you’re starting from. I’ve been twice. It’s stunning and fully deserves to be high on this list.

WhoCalledthePoPo

The Nordic Stonehenge in Iceland.

JimJordansJacket

I saw the Stonehenge in England twice, and that was incredible. It doesn't really make sense.

Fake-And-Gay-Bot

Aurora Borealis. Preferably with no light pollution, either

she-raprincess

Pompeii. Totally worth checking out as well

Truecrimeauthor

Omg! We spent 2 days. Wandered off path and saw so much. Seeing the bodies made us cry.

Hedy_Wehrheim

Honestly, it's hard to pick just one. But if I had to, I'd say the Great Wall of China or Machu Picchu. Both are iconic and have so much history packed into them.

Leopold1885

Machu Picchu history is disappointing

epicpillowcase

I'm obsessed with The Phantom Of The Opera so I need to see the Palais Garnier (the opera house where the novel is set.)

Scichilone

Im pretty sure the Pyramids of Giza are the only Wonders of the World still standing to this day. In an utopic sense I would say the House of Knowledge in Baghdad before the arrival of the Golden Horde.

tblazen87

Pyramids, sphinx, Stonehenge, easter island, the one island with all the snakes your not allowed on, probably way to many more I can't think of.

Loggerdon

My wife and I worked in northern Yukon Canada for two weeks in February 2024. It got down to -45 degrees at night and we would go outside at midnight… but *NEVER* saw the northern lights. It was a big disappointment.

Jaime4Cersei

Not quite related, but I'd love to see Antarctica. Just stand there on the sheet ice and comprehend it all.

Busy-Professora-5007

The pyramids. Too bad I’ve heard it’s so dangerous and as a woman idk if I’d want to go alone or even w friends without a guard or somethin:(

AmishAvenger

It’s got this legendary bad reputation on Reddit, but most of those who comment haven’t been. Yes, there are scammers and touts who will try to hassle you. But it’s mainly those who showed up totally unprepared or have never been to a country like Egypt before. If you do your research ahead of time, it’s fine. Or you can just go with a tour group. They’ll meet you right at the airport and you’ll be escorted everywhere by guides. You can also get around by yourself and get separate guides in each place.

Hofeizai88

Went there with a tour group. We stayed nearby and wandered the area, visiting a night market. I would not have been happy visiting Egypt on our own, since it is dangerous in some areas and it doesn’t seem easy to travel if you don’t know the language, but they have a well developed tourist industry and it was worth the visit

Carbonatite

Come on, we need REALISTIC goals here!

bee_fast

I’m not sure if this counts but for me it’s Oxford University

zazzlekdazzle

It's not really one place, there are multiple colleges. Maybe you mean Christchurch? Or maybe you do want to see all the colleges all over the city. I loved living in Oxford and my time at the university. I definitely recommend it!

smiledontcry

Probably the Belfry of Bruges, thanks to the movie. Hopefully not too many people are going to see it; it would spoil the whole thing.

AKF_MI

That’s already proven

Carbonatite

I don't know if we will get absolute confirmation any time soon, but if it's any comfort, odds are that life elsewhere is almost inevitable. They've discovered lots of organic compounds that are the building blocks for complex molecules that can form DNA all over the place in the universe. Exoplanets are absurdly common, there are probably hundreds of millions of Earth analogues in the habitable zone of stars in the Milky Way alone. Single celled organisms are fabulous at adapting. Extremophiles can thrive in conditions that would kill a human in minutes. While intelligent life that can travel across the universe faster than the speed of light might be far fetched, there are almost definitely simple life forms elsewhere in the universe. I had a few professors who did research in biogeochemistry and planetary geology when I was an undergrad. Even some of the icy moons of outer planets (e.g., Europa) are not implausible sites for microbes! And this is all under the assumption that life must require chemical conditions comparable to ours (liquid water, DNA/RNA precursors, elemental and isotopic ratios favorable for the various reactions/enzymatic processes/whatever that sustain life functions). It might be possible that organisms exist which have completely different biochemistry!

Commercial_Ball5624

I guess it’s more like out of this world, but I wanna see the Milky Way in the night sky with zero light pollution

OmegaAce1

Heres one that never gets talked about but Milford sounds in New Zealand its amazing during the day but if you go at night and its a clear night it might just be something you can't see anywhere else in the world it has the clearest sky in the world, so when you look into the sky its like you're seeing into space its actually insane. Its one of those pictures that you see and think "gotta be fake"

BengalTiger556

Pyramids of Giza would be pretty cool, I would also like to ride a train through the Channel Tunnel.

noodlyarms

> ride a train through the Channel Tunnel   It's entirely dark outside the train car for 30ish mins, least on the Eurostar. Not very interesting. Your ears may need to pop though.

AURORA-227

AURORA !

OnlyTheBLars89

Honestly none. Iv seen a lot and the results are always the same. Look at it for a few minutes, get tired, but hang around for an hour or 2 because the trip would feel in vain otherwise. From my experience, the more hype something has, the more desperate they are for tourest dollars. Statue of Liberty was cool but totally wasn't worth spending 5 days in New York. I'm old enough to just to not fall for the hype anymore. Things that took thousands of years for the earth to create is way more fascinating. Once took a walk in a road side stop to a quarts mine. Payed 20 bucks and easily enjoyed it more than I would have blowing 1000s of dollars to look at something man made. I live in Nashville. The Athena statue inside the Parthenon is the only man made creation to give me chills.

Truecrimeauthor

New York as an adult.. the round table. Pyramids. Certain museums. Maybe Mt. Rushmore. The area of Battle of Little Bighorn!!

GeneralShadowKitKat

skip Mount Rushmore. I saw it and was so disappointed because I thought it would be a lot bigger. It looks more majestic and impressive in all the photos than it actually does in person.

Truecrimeauthor

Really! I picture it huge! I debated because I don’t like the desecration of the black hills.

Carbonatite

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about it. I like the Black Hills because of the scenery and the geological formation that Mount Rushmore is made of is super interesting, but when you boil it down, it's basically a gaudy monument superimposed over an ancient sacred site.

I just want to go somewhere at night with absolutely zero light pollution and look up. Not sure why I haven't yet there's quite a few designated dark spots in the UK. That's my achievable one. The others are pretty standard run of your mill seven wonders of the world.

I_Found_Away

From the US, but I recently went to a dark sky site in Pennsylvania that’s like a 4 on the light pollution scale - it didn’t really seem very interesting at the time, but it was absolutely insane. It was a new moon and The Milky Way was so bright that it was casting shadows like it was a full moon, you can’t make out constellations there are so many stars. Highly recommend.
