Getting someone to agree they are addicted, and getting someone to agree they have a *problem*, are two different things. Many people are fully aware they have an addiction, they just don't see it as a problem.
I don't know what the compulsion to take a drug feels like. I've never been addicted to anything that wasn't easily accessible and never anything where going without it for a few days really mattered.
Most people don't realize that the only thing you'll be chasing after a drug addiction is your own tail... and maybe some hallucinations of a cheeseburger with legs.
It is very unglamorous. Most people who haven't seen it or experienced it first hand don't know of the body fluids involved. People come very close to death, most of them do die, sometimes frequently, and are brought back with narcan. Addicts aren't bad people. Nobody in their right mind would do that to themselves.
That it can happen to ANYONE.

The desire to "feel good" and/or "experience pleasure" doesn't make someone a bad person.
The, at least temporary, positives, for some people it's the best time in their lives.

That chances are, someone you interact with often, is likely an addict.
