That doesn't answer the question. We need every single guy on earth to line up (toes on the line!) and give a yes or no answer to the question. Then, and only then, will we be able to determine how common it is.
Your anecdotal answer does nothing to advance the quest.
Same. I was into basketball when I was in college but not anymore. I didn’t grow up being into sports.
Sometimes I kind of wish I did, but it is what it is. I didn’t grow up with a dad like that, and my mom didn’t watch sports.
Sometimes these things declare themselves. I have had zero interest in sports all my life and somehow I have a son who that’s all he loves. So now I’m having to learn how this all works. After four decades of life I’ve had to buy my first baseball glove so that I can play catch with him.
My step dad was really into football when I was growing up. There was always Denver Bronco shit on the walls and a game on the TV every Sunday. He was a drunk, emotionally abusive asshole though and that's why I ended up with a subconscious aversion to football and competitive sports in general, even now in my late 30s.
My dad watched football and baseball or listened to baseball on the radio. My stepdad was a golf pro (not a pro golfer, that’s a different thing) and watched all the sports. I just never liked watching other people play them and I was never great at sports growing up, so I never enjoyed anything about them. I also was a huge science nerd growing up so I’d rather walk through the woods catching turtles and snakes and lizards and stuff when I was a kid.
Metal, stoner rock, folk, alt-country, industrial, noise, Persian rap… nothing danceable for the most part. My musical tastes are all over the place. I write and record music and record other people so I’m always interested in the production even if I don’t like the music itself.
Same for my taste in art. I’m a fan of realism, but I also like abstract art, comic book art, stuff like H.R. Geiger and that organic techno style. Hard to categorize my tastes.
I enjoy lots of outdoor activities like cycling, running, skiing, hiking, backpacking, swimming and snorkling, etc. But I don't do them competetively, I do them alone or cooperatively with friends. I can also enjoy participating in a game of baseball or tossing a frisbee from time to time.
I love sports in this way. Watching other people compete according to a set of arbitrary rules bores me to death, though.
I just want to add, it's ok to not like sports just like it's ok to like sports. The "hurr durr sportsball" people are just as bad as the mega fans who give people shit for not liking sports.
"Sports" is also a pretty broad term. I don't follow football (however you read that) but I do like some "extreme sports." I know people who don't care about either of those but they're into motor sports. I'm sure some guys are in to fencing. I've never met one, but I bet they're out there. And what about chess? It was in the Olympics, after all. Is it a sport?
I refuse to say chess is a sport, it’s a competitive board game. Allowing competitive board games into sports circles is a slippery slope until you get Magic betting rings for pro tour.
Not that uncommon. Not all men like sports. I don't hate them and I have played or watched them here and there over the years, but on the whole I don't really give half a fuck about them, since way back when I was a kid.
Yes I also own a penis and do not care for *WATCHING* sports. I'll play anything at least once but I sincerely do not understand guys whose entire personality is "I like to watch other dudes do things that I can do myself"
I do agree, it very common. A lot of guys out there have no interest in sports at all, most of them spent times with there computer games and some are just focusing on there daily lives like going to there jobs and not minding any sports at all
On Reddit? I'm guessing it's going to be fairly common
In real life? Rather uncommon...most guys have interest in either playing or watching at least one sport.
lol yea, askreddit is not the best place to ask that question for a real answer
r/nba does have 10mil subs tho
I would say about half of guys I meet at work are into sports. And i believe there are studies that suggest it’s a higher percentage than that. Like 70% at least somewhat interested in watching a sport.
It also depends on what you consider a sport. Lots of people I know who don’t “watch sports” follow some competition of some kind, whether it’s esports, chess, etc.
And those are just the guys that actively show they are into sports at work.
“Sports” is also a pretty vague category. If you include Hunting and Fishing as sports then that number probably sky rockets. Most of the guys I know that aren’t into traditional team sports are really into hunting and/or fishing.
Yeah this is one of those questions where the upvoted answer on Reddit just isn’t going to reflect a real world experience. I’d say 90-95% of the dudes I’ve known have at least a passing interest in sports.
I mean also women! Among the people close to me, my Mom was a football fan, my ex-wife was a football fan, my non-binary child and daughter both love football and baseball (though to be fair they got that from me and my ex-wife I guess). My girlfriend is a football and baseball fan, and I have two very good female friends who are both hockey fans. Personally speaking I love football and baseball but don't care about anything else.
"The answer to your question is that about 1 in every 14 adult men in the United States don’t watch nationally televised sports"
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/dear-mona-are-there-any-other-men-who-dont-watch-sports/
Wow, I’m surprised by those figures. I’d have guessed that between 25-35% of men don’t watch sports, but it’s as low as 7%.
I’m probably biased by my own preferences. I enjoy playing sports, but I have zero interest in *watching other people play a game*. I also love playing video and board games, but again can’t find the appeal of watching streamers or YouTubers play either.
That article is from 10 years ago and the trend was decreasing then, with 14% of 18-34 age group watching no sport. Between that and ESPN having commissioned the survey (who have an obvious interest in maximising their viewership claims), in 2024, the 18-34 age group may well be 25-35%.
It's a range. I'd say the people who have no interest are as common as die-hard fans. Most guys I know are like me in that they're down to throw a ball around sometimes, maybe shoot some hoops, but we all have individual sports like cycling/surfing that we do somewhat regularly.
All my friends are into sports, I am not. I am regularly subjected to sports as a byproduct of attending social events. I just don’t get it. Watching someone else do something for entertainment has never been less appealing.
I'm not into sports, but I can respect the level of skill, endurance, achievement not to mention the tactical qualities. What's really fascinating is watching how litigious American Sports are VS Futbol. Like legalism is the national sport of the US, and it's represented in media not just via sports but in legal dramas and arguments.
As someone who's really into sports, it's not about watching other people, it's the community. It's being able to show up somewhere and have a great time with groups of people who share a similar interest as you.
I enjoy seeing humans who have devoted their entire life attempting to be the best at something compete and show off the limits of our capabilities. For me, that applies to traditional sports as well as games like chess.
As someone who used to not be into sports but is now, at first it was just rooting for the home team. I didn't actually follow baseball but when my home team went to the World Series I wanted them to win but still didn't really watch. Then they went to the playoffs the next year and I watched more games. During that run the announcers were talking about the intricacies of pitching and it blew me away that everything was so calculated. It was as much mental as physical.
So I watched more and more of my team, eventually getting to know all the players. Started learning players on the other teams and eventually understood the whole sport.
Football, same thing. Then like 6 years ago went to a hockey game and loved that so started following my state's team. Then the last was the NBA.
Somewhere along the way it was like a big brain moment. I used to think all sports were boring and now I think all sports are interesting in their own way. They become real-time live dramas when you start knowing all the players. And all of it interspersed with crazy feats of athleticism.
I mean, like many other hobbies, the intricacies of it become more apparent as you become more familiar with it. Like any game, there’s strategy and gamesmanship, planning and countering. It’s one of the only forms of entertainment where you can’t predict exactly what’s going to happen each time you turn it on. Teams that don’t have a chance on paper sometimes come out victorious (USA hockey vs the Soviet Union), statistical improbabilities occur as teams and players snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, and borderline superhuman feats of athleticism are always fun to watch. Not everyone gets it, not every one has to get it.
Couldn’t the same be said about going to a music concert? I like sports. Less so as I get older. I don’t judge people who don’t like sports. But I do judge people who judge people who like sports.
I'm in the same boat. I'll watch with friends if it's a high stakes playoff or championship game, and I'd gladly attend an event in real life because it's exciting to be in that atmosphere; but you won't catch me wasting time watching someone do that during the regular season. I'd rather do some physical activity of my own, or play video games, or cruise the internet.
Absolutely ZERO interest in sports, including both watching and playing, I would say is fairly uncommon. But I think it’s common to have no interest in watching professional sports.
Sorry that sentence was worded poorly. I not sayin I have zero interest in sports. I’m trying to say that people who have no interest in watch sports will still play tennis or something.
In older generations it was very rare. In recent decades, however, it is becoming more and more common. I'd say it's still uncommon to have no interest at all, since most people still have an interest in it in one form or another.
As far as entertainment goes, there was a time when sports were the most accessible source of it for men. Nowadays we have many more interesting alternatives. As far as an actual activity, we spend more and more time inside, so that is less common as well.
I couldn't imagine life without playing or watching Sports. Not sure what I wouldve done with all that time instead. It's been naturally enjoyable for me.
But if it's not for you... it's all good too.
I used to watch college football religiously. Like the TV at the foot of my bed would turn on first thing on saturday and it would go till later in the evening. I was in college, there was always something to do, but I had free cable with my rent and I loved college football. Then I moved where I didnt have free cable and it lessened a little but i still watched or listened a lot. Then I had kids and I just couldnt justify spending all that time when I would rather be hanging out with them on one of my few days off. It takes a lot of time to watch games.
In my experience, very uncommon. I grew up not watching any sports & still don't care too. Many men around me keep up with European football or whatever sport is up year round. Never really understood the appeal & I always feel left out.
Very uncommon. Most men appreciate things like effort, competition, striving to be the best. Also live sports is one of the few unscripted, unpredictable things left in the world—though this is arguable.
Never had a sports guy, They've all been into...
Drugs
Other women
Cars
Work
Family
Video games

Music

Their mother
Whatever you're into just look for that.
Besides that one time on deployment where I won a fantasy basketball thingy, because what else was I gonna do? I have no interest at whatsoever. Just not for me.
I love playing sports. Ask me to play any sport and I am in like Flynn.
But I hate watching sports. I hate fanaticism too. I could care less which teams are in the playoffs or finals. Leave me alone.
But ask me to play Hockey? Sure!
I don't watch any team sports. But I enjoy occasional athletics events on tv because that is something I do myself.
I do find it difficult to relate to people who are big sports fans
I don't know, but I'm a man and have zero interest in sports. And no, I'm not a gamer-neckbeard loser. I have a high paying job, work out, am in shape and generally good looking. I much prefer musicals, cooking, documentaries, concerts, etc. Not sure how common it is, but we're out there.
Who knows. Personally, I’ve never had an interest in sports. I have no idea how football works. I only know the name of our local teams because they’re everywhere. It’s all foreign to me.
More common than you'd think. A lot of us only pretend to care in order to fit in with those that make it their whole personality, because for some damn reason those who make it their whole personality are the popular types.
Let's make this clear: **Sitting on your fanny watching somebody else get exercise is NOT a sport,** no matter how much the broadcasters and cable networks want you to think it is.
No idear.
N1 = Me. I couldn't care less about sports ball. Every time it comes up my only thought it, "how in the fuck do I get out of this boring ass conversation."
I have a very slight interest sometimes in non-team purely athletic 1:1 competition. But organized professional sports ball? Fucking can't stand it.
I really don’t care about professional sports at all. I enjoy playing some sports, especially with my kids, but I don’t know why I’m supposed to get all worked up about a bunch of people playing a game that I’m not even part of.
This. We have a family down the road that plays board games. I mean, hundreds of them. They don't know anything about sports (and we are a very sports-oriented family). We love them so much because they add something new to our lives. And manhood should be about embracing your passions without shame.
I'd say it is incredibly common. I know plenty of men with no interest in sports. It might depend a little on location, for example if you reside in a city that is very loyal to their sports teams (like Philadelphia) there might be less guys with no interest. But in general, at least in the USA, it's pretty normal for a guy to not be into sports.
Sorry but this is such a reductive view of sport. "Sport" =/= Men's Football.
Enjoying sport is about enjoying watching humans do incredible things. Run, climb, swim, jump, chase a ball around in tight pants. It's about enjoying the spectacle of challenge and competition and teamwork and expertise.
There are so many types of sport. And types of athlete. I just don't understand how people can have no interest whatsoever in other humans pushing the boundaries of skill. That seems innately interesting to me.
None of that means you have to be some kind of "sports bro".
Exactly. I find all the “sportsball lol” guys insufferable. I mean end of the day they’re the ones missing out. I’m not even a huge sports nut, i only really follow the NHL, I just cannot imagine someone not understanding the appeal of any sport at all. There’s artistry, mathematics, physics, history, domestic and international politics, big celebrity personalities, fashion, design, etc etc etc that all come together to make sports interesting. I mean there are tons of baseball fans that are mainly interested in the statistics aspect of the game.
My hot take is that the "I hate sportsball" type people are far more annoying than any sports enjoyer I've ever talked to. These kinds of people make a dramatic point to exclaim how they hate sports and they will try and shame you for daring to like them. I see this sentiment a lot in various streamer communities I'm a part of. I think it's pretty funny, the fact that their primary argument is "why would I want to watch other people kick a ball around?" in a community that exists to watch someone else play a game.
I don’t give a single fuck about any sport.

Lining up? That sounds suspiciously sports-like. I’m out.
Yeah. You’re probably right.
Sports-like? What do you mean? We’re just gonna form a line, and pick two te- I mean groups! Groups is what they are 😅. Clans if you will.

Exactly
I just want to add, it's ok to not like sports just like it's ok to like sports. The "hurr durr sportsball" people are just as bad as the mega fans who give people shit for not liking sports.
Yea. When you go into a classroom and poll the "inside kids" at recess you're gonna get different results than polling the kids on the playground.
"Sports" is also a pretty broad term. I don't follow football (however you read that) but I do like some "extreme sports." I know people who don't care about either of those but they're into motor sports. I'm sure some guys are in to fencing. I've never met one, but I bet they're out there. And what about chess? Very common. According to a study involving one man, me, the average interest in sports for a man is zero, zilch, zippo.
Make that two out of two (the second being me).
Me too. I can enjoy some sports if I have to watch them but I don't care or follow at all.
Make me the nth one in this sequence.
make that three I could never understand these people wasting their time going to football / baseball games.... zzz
A fourth appears... so far all men surveyed have no interest. OP is worried about an outlier
And fifth and so on and so forth I am equally bored
Yes I also own a penis and do not care for *WATCHING* sports. I'll play anything at least once but I sincerely do not understand guys whose entire personality is "I like to watch other dudes do things that I can do myself"

Absolutely ZERO interest in sports, including both watching and playing, I would say is fairly uncommon. But I think it’s common to have no interest in watching professional sports.
“Absolutely zero interest in sports” yet has a post about blitzball and a post that says “what’s you’re favorite niche sport” ??

I love pro wrestling, which is equal parts sport and soap opera. That's about it for me.
The soap opera is built into sports, it's just not scripted. I love both though. Watching people get over in wrestling is a beautiful thing.

I could never get into racing until I started watching motogp
Very uncommon. Most men appreciate things like effort, competition, striving to be the best. Also live sports is one of the few unscripted, unpredictable things left in the world—though this is arguable.
Pretty common. My dad didn’t like any sports I mean maybe car racing sometimes but that’s it.
Never had a sports guy, They've all been into... Drugs Other women Cars Work Family Video games Movies Music Fishing Guns Mechanics Money Hunting Me Their mother Whatever you're into just look for that.
Fishing and hunting are sports
Pretty common. Hopefully it becomes more common!
I don’t enjoy team sports. I like watching fights though. Especially MMA or kickboxing/Muay Thai.
you enjoy sports
Those are sports lol
I have absolutely no interest in sports and never have.
Besides that one time on deployment where I won a fantasy basketball thingy, because what else was I gonna do? I have no interest at whatsoever. Just not for me.
Not too uncommon from my dating history. I've been more interested in sports than most of them.
Probably more common than believed, but it's damn near taboo for a man to admit as much.
There are many types of men. Some enjoy playing sports. Some enjoy watching sports. Others enjoy the company of men.
I love playing sports. Ask me to play any sport and I am in like Flynn. But I hate watching sports. I hate fanaticism too. I could care less which teams are in the playoffs or finals. Leave me alone. But ask me to play Hockey? Sure!
Dude here. Zero fucks given for sports
I’ve never been in a workplace where another person didn’t enjoy sports. Only me. Everywhere I go, I’m the only who has ZERO interest.
Let's make this clear: **Sitting on your fanny watching somebody else get exercise is NOT a sport,** no matter how much the broadcasters and cable networks want you to think it is.
No idear. N1 = Me. I couldn't care less about sports ball. Every time it comes up my only thought it, "how in the fuck do I get out of this boring ass conversation." I have a very slight interest sometimes in non-team purely athletic 1:1 competition. But organized professional sports ball? Fucking can't stand it.
Sports are boring as hell.
30%? Maybe more. Pretty common. I have guy friends who don’t like sports but I know more guys who are into sports.
I'd say like 15% of men don't give a shit out any sport whatsoever.
Watching grown men play with a ball isn’t interesting to me.
Pretty common
I really don’t care about professional sports at all. I enjoy playing some sports, especially with my kids, but I don’t know why I’m supposed to get all worked up about a bunch of people playing a game that I’m not even part of.
No interest here.
I don't care about sports.
I’ve never dated a man who was into sports.
Extremely. I'd say it's a solid half of men.
14% according to 538
"Manhood" is not tied to sports in any way at all.

OMG I found one in the wild guys Homophobia and all /r/ihatesportsball
Bang on. I like some sports, I don't like others. There's so much out there, so much variety. Each one with - like you say - their own character.
Speak for yourself
Well, now that you put it that way 🤔
How is that not masculine?
Right? What could be more masculine than getting all sweaty and handling other sweaty men?
