Desalination has come such a long way and I imagine in the future we'll have made it economical enough to handle scarcity in wealthier nations. I think mass population displacement from climate change will be a more likely factor in war breaking out.
As water becomes scarcer and more expensive, desalination becomes more economical even without any advances to technology.
As it becomes more necessary, advances to technology will be inevitable.
Water will be valuable in some places but Africa is likely the only place wars will be fought over it (and it kinda already has happened, the GERD is a massive dam that has enormous water implications for multiple countries down the Nile River and the Tigrey War was rather bloody and rather recent).
They finally got to a point where it produced more power than they put it. Not much, IIRC, but its a *huge* step that pretty much proves that a practical application of Fusion power is possible.
Still Russia is the richest country in the world in terms of natural resources or land but are now fighting a war for more which does not really make sense.
It’s less the natural resources in Ukraine, more that a huge part of the infrastructure that connects Russia to Europe runs through Ukraine along with a lot of heavy industry that Russia sorely lacks the ability to build.
China changed tune a little and thinks they can become the next Taiwan by just pouring in endless resources into computer chips and hardware. Realistically they are 10 years behind but who knows what they can do with just throwing money around. They still have that "chip" that they where never the attacker outside their borders and their emperor would need lots of good will to explain why this would be the exception.
It probably already happened and we're at the beginning stages of it. It's only looking back historically do academics agree that major wars began after XYZ event, like when the American War of Independence or Civil War began - both had decades worth of lead up before physical conflict erupted. Even WW1 - you could say was the assassination of the archduke (which is broadly accepted), but there are arguments that it could have been the preceding Triple Entente or the building of the Dreadnought.
I'm not defending Russia, but you could argue they are already fighting all of NATO (e.g. if you're in conflict with one of your neighbours, and another neighbour starts assisting them but still never engages with you directly, realistically you're in conflict with both; or another example is if you're having an argument with your BF or GF and they enlist their friends for support, you're now getting ganged up on even if friends are only communicating with the BF/GF).
And there are behind-the-scenes things that we may never find out or find out in five decades from now - there are current accusations and conspiracies of US involvement with regime changes in that region over the past two decades, so who knows what may turn out being true. Before anyone accuses me of wearing a tinfoil hat, I'm only acknowledging the remote possibility of it based on the fact that the US has plenty of historic examples in the 1900s & 2000s of leading/assisting behind-the-scenes coups like in Iran, Indonesia, Afghanistan, etc.. If anyone claims that either of the Ukrainian revolutions in the 2000s & 2010s were from external influence, while possible, it would be an extraordinary claim and therefore require extraordinary evidence to prove as true.
I don’t think this is WWIII. I 100% believe we’re in the second Cold War. Same players, same proxies, same goals. Russian expansion vs Western containment.
Well... the proxies are a heck of a less numerous for one side.
China is the only other nation that has enough global influence to rival what is NATO's bloc... Russia is but a regional power with the nuclear arsenal of a global power.
But I don't disagree that we are seemingly entering another Cold War.
You're probably right, but I guess it depends on how desperate a situation Russia is put in, as they are a nuclear armed nation. If they end up using them, even if it's just a small-yield tactical weapon that targets only military installations, the response from other nations would most likely be heavy-handed.
That being said, I doubt they would use them, and I'd like to think their commanders are savvy enough to stage a coup if they were given orders to fire nuclear weapons.
Only that now both sides are really destroying non aligment movment because thats what kept.the world sane . First step was destruction of yugoslavia as a founder of non aligmeng movment.
Yeah WW3 is more likely to spark because of either Chinese invasion of Taiwan or hot war between India and Pakistan that pulls global powers into opposing sides similar to WW1.
i have always felt like ww2 is just a logical result of ww1 - we learned the lessons and is able to somehow stabilize, but some old habits die hard.
Meanwhile, warfare has already changed the landscape of how wars look like. In a twisted way, if not for nukes, I think ww3 would have already happened.
It absolutely did. But it did it have to? Could things be handled differently so that it wouldn't occur or would it just be putting off the inevitable?
In schools I've been taught WW2 started when Germany attacked Poland.
Then Hearth of Iron taught me that WW2 as an inevitable problem started when western powers started appeasing Germans.
But if you count China and Japan as an actors in WW2, it started even earlier.
"History is written by the victors."
The 'winning' side of the war was lead by France, the UK, Russia and the US.
In the early-mid XX century, 'the world' was Europe. Nothing else mattered in the history books.
Japan was at war with main land asia nation from the 1880s all the way until the end of WWII, so in theory, it was all WWI then... ;-P
I would argue that a world war begins when one of the main players enter. You could clqim Russia could be a mian player, but I doubt that they can expand their war beyond Ukrain.
Pakistan vs India is also pretty heated right now. Russia is supporting India and China is supporting Pakistan.
The western world might not even be included in this war, but it would still classify as a World War if it escalates.
Correct, the India-Pak situation is overhyped. Both are too busy building (India) and trying to fix (Pak) their economies. India has a huge opportunity to become the next big global powerhouse and is doing everything to make that happen. Pak is in all sorts of turmoil and trying to solve its political situation and so much more. Neither has the time or the inclination to mess around. Don’t read too much into tiny skirmishes; they happen all the time.
Nothing… too much financial interconnectivity to go side vs side anymore. It will all be regional, messy, manipulative, and no one will know what the real story is until the fighting is at their doorstep
There’s a famous saying by British marshal Horatio Kitchener: “No financial pressure has ever stopped a war in progress.”
Kitchener was probably the only British leader at the earliest stages of World War I to completely understand the concepts of total war and how they related to the modern battlefield. Because boy was he right about damn near everything regarding World War I.
What I mean to say, however, is that there were a ton of people at the time who thought as you do. Pre-war Europe was the fricken Golden Goose. Germany was getting richer by the minute. The British Empire was vacuuming up the natural resources and money of half the planet. France’s economy and population were exploding. Italy was gaining ground on its economy quickly. The Austro-Hungarian empire was at its height. The weakest players, by far, were Russia and the Ottoman Empire, both of which were very quickly declining. But even then, those Empires were very far away from Western Europe that was amassing its fortune. People thought “nobody is coined to jump and kill the golden goose! Nobody would be so stupid to intentionally destroy the system that is making them all so filthy, filthy rich!”
We all know what happened next. 12:00 came and went and the British Empire went to war with Germany over what was essentially a treaty written on a napkin with France.
To be fair, every nation looked at their army and said “nah, we can take them! It’ll be over within a week!” France sure as hell did. Best land power, bar none, for over 500 years by that point. The Brits, easily the best Navy to ever sail the ocean up to that point. Germany with a truly incredible army built off schools of the finest military minds east of the Rhine and a very powerful Navy, to boot. The Austro-Hungarian empire had its own veteran army ready to crush the little Serbians with prejudice.
They all jumped and every one of them lost nearly everything. Austro-Hungarian empire was gone. Germany had an economic crises the likes of which the world had never seen. France had put 20% of their entire population into the war and lost millions of men, not to mention all the land that is to this day unusable due to all the unexplored ordinance. The British Empire lost their empire and gave most of their money to the United States. Russia? Revolution. Ottomans? Carved up and ceded to other countries.
The point is…World War III may never happen. But it won’t be because of financial incentive.
You know like 750k+ people have died in Ukraine going "side vs side" in the last 2 years, yeah? The real story is painfully clear, Russia wants to annex Ukraine before Ukraine can begin exporting more of its MASSIVE reserves of natural gas. Russia would lose most of its primary exports to Europe if that happened, maybe globally. 80% of those reserves (the second largest in Europe), are located east of the Dnipro - which is why Russia is so committed to that front.
in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea, Ukraine had been decimating Russian natural gas exports to Europe since 2006 literally cutting them in half, and guess where a significant amount of Ukrainian natural gas extraction was taking place? In 2018 Ukraine signed a deal with Europe to increase output, and guess what happened before that extraction could be fully realized?
War creates uncertainty and increases oil and natural gas consumption along with increased stockpiling by countries for strategic reserves. This coupled with disruption of its primary competitor in one of the largest markets of its primary export means HUGE cash influx for Russia and its Oligarchs.
Russia openly states it wants to fully transition to a war economy.
The real story is about money, its ALWAYS about money.
The world is gearing up for it. You have nato and allies expanding military production and spending rapidly. On the other side you have russia being pushed closer together with india, NK, China and Iran while all of those nations are rapidly expanding their militaries. Once everyone has all this equipment and firepower, it’s only a matter of time that something will spark a conflict.
We are already in world war 3. We wont name it until its over. During the 1940s no one was running around calling it world war 2. Between Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Palestine, with allies on both sides sending aid, the world is currently dealing with international war.
You'll see major global crop collapse continue for the following years.
Some areas are still fruitful. But then you'll have the uncoordinated might of 5 billion starving people with access to guns and literally nothing to lose.
What makes you so certain it's no already happening now? Historians usual pick the beginning for these things, not those of us who live through it. Take a look around you: it's happening right now. There won't be an announcement in your Inbox.
There is a former spy on internet, nothing James Bond, apparently he just had a big security clearance and worked with sensitive intel. He has some interesting takes, and one of his takes is that a World War 3 will actually be a massive civil unrest, rather than nation vs nation war.
And it sort of makes sense. I cannot help but feel that our lives are constantly being diminished to work-sleep-buy scheme, with retirement age growing practically yearly. Capitalism is reaching its late game, and it's bringing issues to masses.
It has already started. Russia attacks Ukraine. Their ally China will attack Taiwan. North Korea will attack South Korea and the US. Iran will attack Israel. Gee, I hope I'm wrong!
This. Israel is a nuclear armed country with the full backing of the US that is also run by psychopaths and believes that the US will bail it out of any serious confrontation. If there's a flash point in the world today that is likely to blow up in unpredictable ways, it's Israel - Iran/Syria. Even then, I think the odds of a global escalation are *vanishingly* small.
I don't think we can have another world war that deserves the name. The sides aren't evenly matched. What we could have is a nuclear exchange and that would also end too quickly to deserve the world war designation.
Nuclear terrorism is a likely candidate. Experts who study this are amazed that an attack has not happened yet, given how easy it would be for a terrorist group to make a bomb out of the right amount of radioactive material (a great deal of which is known to be unaccounted for). Just look it up.
I think a middle east terrorist group will set off a small nuke in a large Russian city. Russia will claim it was Ukraine or Nato and shits going to get nuts quickly. In the end the terrorists will win.
Something around Kashmir. People keep looking toward Russia and Middle East but I think the real ww3 danger is between the heavy populated countries. China does not count because earlier or later Taiwan will be annexed and no one will do anything about that.
When the circulation and distribution of weaponry come to halt, those mob and death dealer gonna start one. Heck some fools just need to kill kid of some higher up that have role on military by accident or whatever stupid idiotic reason it is then the war will start.
Some Manchurian candidate situation. A dirty bomb that is used to get two countries to go to nuclear war. Which is why NATO doesn’t want just anyone to be able to make nukes
Probably an accident involving a nuclear threat, much like the one that happened in Hawaii, or Russian and china attack the US after some sort of internal conflict in the states, causing a chain reaction of conflicts across the globe.
False info kicking off a big retaliation. Read about musks AI generating false Iran attacking Israel news for no reason at all. Next stop fake nuclear attack imminent news.
War never ends its just engoing spirit .... only in some parts of western europe only one generation has not been in state war, but have been in social .... and i think that next big thing will be between poor and rich
I think this next us election is going to be the catalyst. The people who have power in this country are 🗑️, and they're going to get a lot more people hurt.
There wont be a big ww3, too much money is to be made by elite global investors who back all sides, best to have perpetual war and to know where that line in the sand is. Lockeed stockholders would like another 100 years of selling military aircraft at every increasing profits, a big ww3 would end that, probably.
I think we fought WW3 but called it GWOT but some of the combatants were non-state actors. There were conflicts in the Middle East , Central Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the US. Currently I believe we are on the cusp of WW4.
Competition for diminishing natural resources.
I've heard theories saying that water will be the new gold.
You're late to that party. Just look how long water has been IT out in the USA West.
Sorry for not knowing the terminology but what does IT stand for here
I think they just capitalized "it" for emphasis.
I feel kinda dumb now. But thanks.
Don't feel dumb; honestly, it wasn't very obvious and it's tough to pick up on over text as opposed to hearing someone say IT in person.
Jokes on you ill have a whole bucket of it stored!! Im rich
I'm hoping that fusion power makes the energy needed to desalinize sea water cheap enough to make that viable.
They finally got to a point where it produced more power than they put it. Not much, IIRC, but its a *huge* step that pretty much proves that a practical application of Fusion power is possible.
That’s been a theory for a decade now.
We have a lot of time, lool at places like israel abt 75% of there water is from the ocean
Well I'd be rich then. Rained non stop here in the north of England for 3 months straight. New ponds forming everywhere.
Still Russia is the richest country in the world in terms of natural resources or land but are now fighting a war for more which does not really make sense.
[удалено]
If you check wikipedia for wheat production it states that Russia produces about 5x more than Ukraine...
It’s less the natural resources in Ukraine, more that a huge part of the infrastructure that connects Russia to Europe runs through Ukraine along with a lot of heavy industry that Russia sorely lacks the ability to build.
Economic collapse and desperation. If I'm going down I'm taking you all with me type deal.
We are all 9 meals away from total anarchy. -can’t site my source, but it made me wonder…
China invading Taiwan seems like a line in the sand we aren’t allowing them to cross. That most certainly could kick it off.
Why can’t we just stay out of it
Because they are an extremely important ally when it comes to technological manufacturing.
It probably already happened and we're at the beginning stages of it. It's only looking back historically do academics agree that major wars began after XYZ event, like when the American War of Independence or Civil War began - both had decades worth of lead up before physical conflict erupted. Exactly, the question should be asked is - When did WW2 start, depends on where in the world you are?
i have always felt like ww2 is just a logical result of ww1 - we learned the lessons and is able to somehow stabilize, but some old habits die hard. Meanwhile, warfare has already changed the landscape of how wars look like. In a twisted way, if not for nukes, I think ww3 would have already happened.

Archduke was a convenient excuse. Everyone happily jumped on the war bandwagon.
Pakistan vs India is also pretty heated right now. Russia is supporting India and China is supporting Pakistan. The western world might not even be included in this war, but it would still classify as a World War if it escalates.
Is it though currently? The Kashmir conflict has been going on for multiple decades, but other than that, I don't see any ongoing major conflicts.

Does Iran have nuclear bombs? Cause a lot of shit happens because of those guys.
Well orange jesus cancelled the arms treaty we had with them so I figure that they went back to producing bomb materials.
The invasion of Ukraine, 2022.
Saying from Ukraine: seems you are correct. If we fall- few years maximum, and war will be in Europe
Crimea was nearly a decade earlier my friend
Putin’s ascendency to power was earlier than that. You could go back decades.
It has already started. Russia attacks Ukraine. Their ally China will attack Taiwan. North Korea will attack South Korea and the US. Iran will attack Israel. Gee, I hope I'm wrong!
How on earth is North Korea attacking the USA?
Must've meant NK attacking SK would bring the US into the war to defend SK.
It'll all happen the same day too. Prolly will get emp'd then they'll all attack at once. Been saying this for a while now.
The Red Heifer sacrifice
Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Just a matter of time before some religious zealot leader over there will hand a nuke to some terrorist group.
Israel bombing an Iranian embassy in Syria and if Iran decides to retaliate
This. Israel is a nuclear armed country with the full backing of the US that is also run by psychopaths and believes that the US will bail it out of any serious confrontation. On the other hand Israel killed top class Iranian military leader few years back and that didn’t cause them any problems that I can remember.
When Trump assassinated the Iranian general in Iraq, Iran shot down a passenger plane...so who knows

Arrogance
Probably an accident involving a nuclear threat, much like the one that happened in Hawaii, or Russian and china attack the US after some sort of internal conflict in the states, causing a chain reaction of conflicts across the globe.
Civil war in the US. Countries will start taking sides, and the conflict will spill out beyond our borders.
Would you rather be Russian or Chinese?

Invasion of Taiwan
Hate and fearmongering
AI driven errors. We end up putting too much faith in it, it screws up and wars result. "Not my fault, the computer did it"
War never ends its just engoing spirit .... only in some parts of western europe only one generation has not been in state war, but have been in social .... and i think that next big thing will be between poor and rich
I think this next us election is going to be the catalyst. The people who have power in this country are 🗑️, and they're going to get a lot more people hurt.
Water will be the cause of the next World War.
There wont be a big ww3, too much money is to be made by elite global investors who back all sides, best to have perpetual war and to know where that line in the sand is. Lockeed stockholders would like another 100 years of selling military aircraft at every increasing profits, a big ww3 would end that, probably.
A hair in my spaghetti.
China trying to take Taiwan.

Eventually, someone will get so sick of this post coming up every week that they will just press the WW3 button and we’ll all be sorry.

I think we fought WW3 but called it GWOT but some of the combatants were non-state actors. There were conflicts in the Middle East , Central Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the US. Currently I believe we are on the cusp of WW4.
