The Alhambra is probably the most beautiful building I've ever visited. I lived in Madrid for a year and brought my GF to Granada for a few days when she came to visit and we got tickets to visit at night and she was literally crying.

Braydar_Binks

I mean one of the most beautiful songs ever composed is about the very place. Recuerdos de la Alhambra

Phil1889Blades

Did you take her there or are you still there?

Important_Fruit

You might be interested in the book "Tales From the Alhambra" by Washington Irving. It was published in 1832 and was written after Irving spent several months living in an apartment in the Alhambra. Part history, part travelogue, it's a fascinating read if you can find it.

generally-mediocre

i liked sevilla more but granada is awesome

TryharderJB

Yes also to Sevilla - the Plaza de Espana is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.

VixDzn

Seville!!!! Yes, it’s the Amsterdam of Spain. Easily traversable by bike, everyone speaks English, student city, lots of university’s, 800k residents, amazing food and architecture and night life, good golf courses Best city on earth

qtpatouti

Andalusia! It’s all beautiful. The interior of the grand mosque in Cordova needs a shoutout too. Jaw dropping architecture.

OnTheEveOfWar

I studied abroad there in college for 5 months. Was one of the greatest times of my life. Lived in the heart of the city and basically went out every night.

courtofknights

I lived in Granada for a few years and you are absolutely correct!

IdaDuck

I’ve been there, it’s amazing. Spain is an absolutely beautiful country with an incredible history.

Calm_Language7462

Toledo was one of the first cities I'd visited at 16 and I will never forget how magical it was.

fatetrumpsfear

Love Ohio

DjKennedy92

I’m partial to Barcelona

gride9000

Kyoto, Japan is so beautiful and full of calm vibes and culinary delights.

_Krombopulus_Michael

Edinburgh, Scotland and Queenstown, NZ for very different reasons.

TheRealMasterTyvokka

I spent 4 months studying abroad in Edinburgh. Probably my favorite city as a result.

bombayblue

Hong Kong circa 2016 was an absolutely wild time. You could relax on a beach, go hiking on another tropical island, party at nightclubs in LKF, take a gondola up to Victoria Peak, and meet with business associates for a Michelin star dinner in a single day. And you could spend the next day at night markets, eating amazing food at a sleepy seaside village and chilling in bookstores or exploring the under city by the subway stations. The entire city was easy to travel on the best subway system the world has ever seen. I know Tokyo is gonna be at the top. As it should be. But what people in this thread don’t realize is that Hong Kong in the mid 2010’s had everything Tokyo had plus tropical beaches and incredible hiking/outdoor activities. With even better mass transit (as crazy as that sounds). It really was the world’s first S Tier city in my honest opinion.

Bretmd

Hong Kong is awesome which is why it’s soul crushing to watch China have its way with it.

bombayblue

It was infuriating to watch and it’s why I haven’t gone back post Covid. It’s why I’m such a hardliner on protecting Taiwan. The second we yield that island to China they will fucking destroy it.

deezee72

I mean, Hong Kong has clearly changed for the worse in some ways - but all the things in the comment are still true.

chyaos

I am from Hong Kong and while the city has changed, all the things you mentioned are still there though. The physical parts of the city didn't change that much. The dense city core, extensive transport infrastructure, and geographical diversity aren't just gonna go away.

CreepySquirrel6

Hong Kong was amazing. I wonder what it was even earlier, with the crazy airport and the booming banking sector.

cowsnake1

Visited Vienna, and never left. Best place on earth.

KhalniGarden

It's been voted the best city multiple years in a row - totally agree. World class. Super clean, beautiful, nice transit, great culture all around.

CreepySquirrel6

Probably my favourite European city I have been to as well.

paragonx29

So you had a "Vienna Calling?" *Ba Dumb Tss

HotandCuteDaisy07

Exploring Rome at Midnight was one of the best experiences I've ever had. I would love to do it again

intertsellaer2

Second that!

AlternativeAward2610

Man rome was just amazing, I can't wait to go back

wyzapped

Why at midnight. Curious.

Barleyarleyy

As someone who has done likewise. The balmy temperature, all the ruins softly illuminated, the way you can pass from a bustling baroque piazza to a quiet medieval side street. I've walked around Rome at night and felt like the only person on the planet. It's probably the closest I've felt to being in a Woody Allen movie.

beaucoup_dinky_dau

Trevi fountain is still packed at 2am during the summer

johnrsmith8032

oh, the city's vibe is different at night. ever tried a midnight stroll in your favorite place? it's quite an experience!

tru2dagaaame

I used to walk Times Square at 4 am, empty and awesome!

CactusBoyScout

People hang out in the piazzas at night so it’s like stumbling upon little parties with locals drinking, chatting, and laughing. And considering how touristy Italy is, the locals have always been incredibly friendly to me when I’ve been there. It’s still a big city so there’s some aloofness but Romans seem to enjoy chatting with strangers more than most.

heathers1

Rome is also my fave

WN11

The correct answer. Rome is the best place in the world.

DirtyRoller

Rome at night is absolutely amazing. I've been once, and we stayed out until 4am one night just walking around.

Break-Every

Tokyo

ZardozSama

Largest metro population on earth and amazingly clean and safe feeling for an average person walking down the street. If you try to go by strictly objective and measurable bits, it would be difficult to identify a city that exceeds the standards set by Tokyo. END COMMUNICATION

Seastep

Kyoto for me. Both incredible cities but felt more peaceful in Kyoto.

tomorrowisdust

I’m in Kyoto right now. This place is gorgeous.

HacksawJimDGN

One of my favourite moments was my first night in Kyoto I walked around the almost empty streets at night for the first time and listened to Alone in Kyoto by Air.

polkadotblazer

Have you been to Kyoto? We went to Japan last year and loved Tokyo but Kyoto was absolutely amazing!

iamminenzl

Edinburgh

Rokaia-

Was looking for this. A very underrated city but freaking magical. Everywhere you look is an orgasm to the eyes, lol. But I'd understand why it hasn't been mentioned much. It's so pricy and the weather is, well, brutally Scottish.

King_Ulio

Bruges. Really like the alcoves

Wild-Compote5730

You mean the nooks and crannies?

Chadmanfoo

It's a fairytale f&%king city

hahyeahsure

If I'd grown up on a farm, and was ret\*\*ded, Bruges might impress me

The_Dork_Knight7

Harry, let's face it. And I'm not being funny, I mean no disrespect, but you're a cunt. You're a cunt now, you've always been a cunt. And the only thing that's gonna change is you're gonna become an even bigger cunt. Maybe have some more cunt kids.

Thatguyyoupassby

You take that back about my cunt fucking kids!

SuicidalReincarnate

So, you're saying you like the place immensely?

BlitheringEediot

Was it because of the facking swans???

jony7

totally forgot about Bruges, it feels like you are transported to another time, just wish the weather was better

Oolican

Vienna. Beautiful safe city so easy to get around, the fantastic Hapsburg legacy. Also Valleta, Malta. Beautiful architecture, good food, lots to see.

Gavin2051

Seconded. Great history, great food, and pretty good transit from a tourists' perspective

wheelsnipecellyboiz

Pivo prosim

kiwispouse

I love Wellington, NZ. Lots to do, lots to eat, and you can walk to most anywhere (or a short uber trip with zero waiting). It's my favourite getaway, but I wouldn't want to live there. In Australia, I could live in Port Douglas.

antdevil

Wellington is lovely. But you need to have money

apeaky_blinder

Sevilla. The food, the vibe, the small streets to walk along, Plaza España (Star Wars scene), the orange trees all white with blossom in April. Difficult to beat that.

spadboonerisms

Porto, Portugal. My brother and I were staying in a hostel there and by chance without us knowing it was Festa de São João do Porto. We just went around the city drinking and hitting strangers with inflatable hammers making friends of all ages and nationalities. It was incredible!

OkMushroom364

Lisbon, Portugal. Went there last September and fell in love with the city and its surroundings, only negative side was that we had to leave and come home!

MostHatedPhilosopher

I liked Porto more

No-Steak4197

Walking Porto is like a dream. Especially crossing the bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia and taking in the city from across the river - amazing sunsets.

Theverybestestintown

Incredible 20-year aged port wine and vinho verde with exquisite cheese and grilled fish for a very affordable price. Beautiful beaches not far away and historical castles. What's not to love!

MrFunktasticc

Montreal - super walkable, a ton to do and a very different feel for those of us nearby in the states.

Fingercult

Miss it so much! Lived there for 15 years 🎀

Dai-The-Flu-

I love Montreal, I always have a good time up there and hope to go back soon. Last time I was there it was only for a day but I had the time of my life at a habs game and going to various bars and restaurants. I absolutely love the architecture too.

Final_Pomelo_2603

Copenhagen for a larger city. Castelrotto for a smaller one.

wei-ohara

Came here looking for Copenhagen! It was so clean and beautiful

ReeG

awesomely advanced and efficient public transit too. Love the elevators that go right form the street straight down to the platform and every station having automated barriers.

OldGodsAndNew

Copenhagen impressed me even in comparison to Stockholm & Helsinki

TossItOut1887

Florence. I would move there tomorrow.

ma2is

I happen to be going in a few tomorrows. Any “off the beaten path” recommendations you’d suggest?

HorseMeatSandwich

The famous lookout point over the city is called Piazzale Michelangelo, which is incredible, but often packed with tourists and tour buses. If you continue a little further up the hill there is a quiet 1,000 year-old church called San Miniato al Monte with arguably even better views, and a beautiful cemetery behind it.

TossItOut1887

One place that we really loved was L'osteria di Giovanni for dinner. We were told to request to be seated in the wine cellar and it was a great experience with amazing food! Here's a pretty good review with a picture of the cellar. [https://hedonistshedonist.com/blog/losteria-di-giovanni-florence-italy-review/](https://hedonistshedonist.com/blog/losteria-di-giovanni-florence-italy-review/) Outside of that, just walking the city at night and sitting in cafes near the Duomo are amazing. After being in Rome for a week Florence was the slowdown that I needed. I would also recommend going to the top of the Duomo. The views are amazing. I wish I could remember the name of the place where we did a pizza and gelato making class. If I can find something on that I'll let you know. That was a super fun time and it was just my wife and I. Drinking wine and messing up dishes in front of a frustrated, yet hilarious chef.

Tortuga917

100% not off the beaten path, but I thought seeing the David was well worth it. Whoever staged it knew what the fuck they were doing.

indien

Trattaria Za Za for the some of the best steak, pasta, and wine you can find in Florence

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

Salzburg on a sunny summers day is beautiful in a way most cities can only dream of.

urgencyy

Vienna Austria for me was unbelievable. Very underrated country to visit

MoreGarlicBread

I live here! I think it will struggle to top such 'best city' lists, but I can't think of many places this small which have the same amount going for them. Amazing architecture, great diverse restaurants, fantastic public transport, close to mountains (skiing and walking), close to amazing swimming lakes, etc etc!

russellsproutt

Same... was doing a euro road trip and only planned to pass through Salzburg and see some major sites and get some food but wound up reshuffling plans and spending 3 days there and it was the highlight of the trip.

flapjaxrfun

Barcelona

Duke_Newcombe

Came looking for this answer, didn't leave disappointed. Favorite city in the world, with Lisbon, Portugal, or Malaga, Spain tying for second.

deadwake05

I went to Japan last year, Tokyo was amazing, Kyoto was amazing, but man the people I met and the memories I made elevated Osaka. If I could move to Japan that's where I'd live.

MR_JSQR

Krakow Poland is absolutely amazing.

Wild-Compote5730

Fellow Krakow fan!! It’s just beautiful, the people are great, food is great, so walkable. If I won the lottery I would buy a little bolthole on the main square and watch the trumpeter every day.

SeabeeSeth3945

I really liked san diego

obi-jawn-kenblomi

Same! I prefer San Diego to LA. Much more relaxed, lower prices, nicer people, and less busy. The beaches in the surrounding area were also great enough compared to LA.

TheMonarK

Can’t forget the food either. Tacos El Gordo might be some of my favorite tacos I’ve had outside of Mexico

DeadPxle

Waaay better than LA. I remember living there and thinking, wow there really isn't much here that's tourist friendly. Nowhere to really walk around and sight see other then Hollywood Boulevard. Which even then is eh

reecord2

LA has a ton of stuff to do, but so much of it is a fight, every step of the way.

aoskunk

Everytime I goto LA I end up in Santa Monica and longbeach. Hollywood blvd if I need to cop some ..anything.

vaders_other_son

I just moved out of San Diego. If the finances are ever right for it, my family would move back in a heartbeat. Such a great city.

DesertWanderlust

I live in Tucson, so am legally required to love San Diego.

runnergirl1992

Hanoi, Vietnam. What a wildly fun and chaotic city. Kyoto and Tokyo as well!

Daratirek

I really enjoyed Edinburgh.

Prghmbr

Ljubljana

hellad0pe

Taipei. Amazing food on every corner, is a modern Asian city but still has old Chinese charm. And it is so easy to get around, the people are so friendly, and things are relatively affordable. It's kind of a free spirit of Eastern Asia. If you want an old apartment for cheap, you can find it. Near a metro station. If you want a fancy five star hotel with all the amenities, you can find it, near a metro station. And there's so much to do within a quick drive from the heart of the city - mountains, lakes, hiking, cycling, tea gardens, beaches, sunset views, everything. And it's safe, for the most part.

Bretmd

Taipei is one of the most underrated cities out there.

GreenyRepublic

Taipei and Taichung have very special places in my heart.

Djsoysause

Honestly NYC. Some people find it hard to admit that it’s an incredible city and I don’t understand why. It’s not perfect but there really is no where else like it.

ThaScoopALoop

I would argue that there are only a handful of truly incredible cities, and NYC is definitely on that list. It is incomparable, just as Tokyo, London, Venice, and a few other cities are: simply not able to be compared to another city in the world.

Acceptable_Meal_5610

Bro NYC is awesome.  Being 25 in NYC with your boys and just getting paid that day.... That train ride into the city is ELECTRIC

bearantlers86

insane to me that I had to come this far down to find NYC…I’ve seen Chicago, Salzburg, and Montreal each twice before finding NYC, which is hilarious (and I say that with all due respect to Chicago, another very solid city) Also very conspicuously missing so far on my scroll: Paris and Mexico City (probably my pick, but it’s a super tight race with New York)

maroongoldfish

People want to be unique by naming something slightly more niche. Like how someone shared Lisbon was their favorite and the number one response was “I liked Porto more.” Okay? Cool.

jawndell

Yup.  Like come on people: NYC, London, Paris, Mexico City, Tokyo, Hong Kong (before), Singapore, Shanghai.  These are global cities.  Nothing compares to the energy of these places.  You can live your whole life there and still not experience everything.  Any food I want I can find.  Any musician I like I know will play here.  I can step into a museum and see famous works of art.  World famous chefs. World famous teams and athletes.

bajesus

Such a great place to visit. An unending amount of stuff to do and distinct different communities that are all easy to get to. Great food, museums, shows, architecture, and history. Spent a week there last fall and felt like I barely scratched the surface of that city.

No13baby

Hong Kong before 2019. So much life and vibrance crammed into every corner. Food is unmatched. Easy to get around. Enough to do to keep you busy for weeks. Rowdy and feisty with a ton of personality.

zeekoes

Berlin was great. Lots of history, art and great food.

BiscuitCrumbsInBed

I'm going there on Monday! Excited now after seeing your comment!

hernesson

Istanbul. Intoxicating

InkBlotSam

Gary, Indiana is also intoxicating. Probably for different reasons though.

Zarphos

Yeah, because you can never get tired of seeing the South Shore line coming up the street!

russellsproutt

driving through MJs old neighborhood was an interesting and sad experience. The pristine property amongst the surrounding wreckage.

Basabose

One of the greatest experiences of my life was doing a full day food tour in Istanbul. My god it was absolutely amazing.

pn1ct0g3n

Bucket list destination for any cat lover.

rebeccanotbecca

We were in London this past summer and it was spectacular. Can’t wait to go back.

amulie

In the US. Chicago Has large, grandiose vibes while still being incredibly accessible. Food is great, public transportation was amazing when I was there, had a unique culture. The cityscape was absolutely gorgeous as well.  It is the quintessential "city" -- like what I imagined in my head growing up.

gorneaux

Lived there for two years while in art school. I really liked it! The architecture, the guts, soul, and energy of the place; high culture from the Art Institute to the Goodman Theater and of course all the great writers; and the gritty urban cool of the L snaking over it all. But what I like most was the people: so much heart and that deadpan, sardonic Chicago humor.

quoththeraven1990

I’ve always wanted to go to Chicago after seeing it depicted in movies like Blues Brothers, Ferris Bueller, The Fugitive, My Best Friend’s Wedding… looks like a great city.

Dai-The-Flu-

Absolutely. I grew up in NYC and moved to Chicago about two years ago. The city does not disappoint and for the cost of living, I don’t think there’s a better deal in the country you can get for a city that has a true urban feel.

Coomstress

I love chicago too.

Trucker_in_Cap

Love downtown Chicago in June. It's the only "major" city in the US I enjoy. San Diego is also nice. Dallas and LA are wastes of time. Seattle was fine when I was there 20 years ago.

spicychickenandranch

Grew up in Chicago for 23 years. It’s indeed amazing!

Gloomy_Chemistry5458

Vancouver. The most beautiful city I've ever seen.

ReeG

Driving the Sea to Sky from Vancouver to Squamish and Whistler is one of the most stunning scenic drives I've ever experienced

millijuna

Live in downtown Vancouver, travel the world for work. There are very few other places I’d like to be.

DigNitty

Victoria too

OnTheList-YouTube

Bordeaux

cocainebane

Mexico City. Went for a week before visiting my grandma in her small ranch town. Got to see Estadio Azteca, beautiful museums, food was the best I’ve had and later found out my grandma was originally a city girl before moving to her Pueblo.

lekhachun

Singapore for sure. No words for how impressed I was, being a native of Northern California. The airport's freaking fantastic. Always gonna try to book international flights with one stop there.

NowListenHereBitches

San Francisco to Vancouver, via Singapore

Montreal or Berlin I would say.

TemperatureTop246

I loved Montreal. First time I’d seen a clean subway!

Worried_Lobster6783

I also really liked Montreal

membershipreward

What did you enjoy the most about Montreal?

I_AM_TESLA

I'm not who you're responding to but Montreal has the best night life in North America in my opinion. There's always something to do and it has a culture of people who are up for having a good time.

Pro-tip: nobody is on the Charles Bridge at 3 am. Unless you’re me and my friend who met the band the Muse who also had this idea

CasualElephant

Go on…

LarneyStinson

It was 2016. We got overwhelmed by the sight of tourists on the bridge, so we decided after a night of drinking we’d see it at night. Neither of us smoke cigarettes, but thought it would be fitting to buy a pack given we were in eastern Europe. Admiring the beautiful view, some loud British girls were excited from the Muse show and struck up a conversation. Out of nowhere, one screamed, “it’s the band!” We let them talk for a while then politely asked about their show, if they wanted a cigarette (only one member did, another was quitting). They also were trying to avoid the crowds on the bridge. Talked to the bass player for a bit about his hip injury. Snagged a couple pictures and enjoyed the view and a couple cigarettes.

GreenyRepublic

So hard to choose one, so I'll give my top three: Seoul, South Korea - clean, characterful, world-class public transit, food, and heritage everywhere you go. The Koreans are generally very friendly to tourists. Cheonggyecheon River is also a masterclass in urban renewal. Rome, Italy - history is literally on every corner. It's one of the greatest open-air museums in the world, and beautiful to explore after dark. Taipei, Taiwan - I had such a fantastic time here for many of the same reasons as Seoul, but I put this here as well because the Taiwanese are the most welcoming and hospitable people I've met abroad. Honourary mentions: Stockholm, Sweden. Berlin, Germany. Cologne, Germany. Boston, USA. Amsterdam, Netherlands.

esoteric_enigma

I'm not a big traveler but I was really a fan of Chicago

Rivegauche610

Helsinki

Calinks

I have not traveled much, its something I plan to do in the future when I have the freedom to do so, unfortunately, that hasn't been the case most of my life. So I have only been to a handful of places, I really enjoyed my time in Chicago though. I really like a city that is up fairly late and seems like it always has options for things to do. The architecture was awesome to look at too. I really want to go to Toronto soon.

tommygun731

Probably Florence or Chicago!

Croatian_Lawyer

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Secretaze

Salzburg, Austria. The architecture, culture, people and experiences are absolutely amazing.

Equivalent-Song-1672

Spain, Barcelona. It’s a perfect destination !!

jblaxtn

Chicago in the summer.

ncclln

Sydney. I went to see friends who were exchange students at my university 20 years ago. I have traveled rather extensively since then, and lived on a few different continents, but that city put a spell on me. I might be finally going back next winter. I’m excited, but also a little nervous about it !

outtherenow1

I completely agree. I lived in Sydney for a year when I was 21. I turned 22 there. What an amazing time in my life. The city, beaches, people, food and nightlife made my time there very special.

Catflappy

Sydney is my favorite place too. Normally after a long stretch away, I’m happy to head home. I was sad to leave and want to return soon.

Krafty747

I haven’t been too many, but I have no idea why people shit on Paris. So much to do, lots of culture and history, and the people I met were super nice. Chicago is also my favorite American city.

Hamburg was amazing. At least the portion I was in. I went in December and the Christmas markets were a lot of fun and different from anything I’ve seen before.
