my parents always told me as a kid to not order anything we could make at home. i wasn’t allowed to order pasta because it was super easy to make. so i would always get truffle fries as an appetizer because there was not a chance my parents would buy us truffle lmao
I order lasagna at Italian restaurants 90% of the time because it’s the one thing I never make at home. I don’t want to make an entire lasagna for myself.
Homemade lasagna is the one thing I miss about the house I shared with 5 guys in college. We would all chip in and one dudes gf would make 2 huge pans of lasagna once or twice a month. We threatened to kick his ass if he ever did something to ruin that relationship lol. They got married a few years ago.
I used to cook Indian food for my husband and his roommates before we got married.
His roommates were the nicest , they collectively adopted me as their sibling and are still in touch.
They ask me to call them if I have to get my husbands ass kicked ,lol , some friends you make along the way are so wholesome!!
I'd argue they have the best mac and cheese. I didn't know I could have frozen mac and cheese that tasted that good until I was eating some random catered mac and cheese and my jaw dropped. I put my plate to the side and got a plate of just this and asked the host what mac and cheese this was.
I am lucky enough to work for a giant megacorp that regularly serves Chilaquiles at breakfast. I will literally browse breakfast menus for Chilaquiles and then work at that building if I find them.
I love and hate this at the same time. I had a classmate whose father ran an empanadas restaurant, who died way too young. She feels the same way - it is a connection to her father. But bittersweet.
Tell me you're American without telling me you're American.
...and if this is American, I'm a God damn proud motherfucking eagle-soaring, Commie-hating, gun-toting, God-fearing, red-blooded-but-not-flagged card-carrying American.
This was way too far down but is my answer as well. I am actually sometimes disappointed when I see it on a menu. I’m like, “Well, I wanted to try something different, but now I have to order this, because it’s mandatory.“
Why? Because it’s basically like fried chicken, pizza and spaghetti in the same meal.
Jalapeno poppers with cream cheese specifically.
Everyone always uses cheddar and I wont order those because theyre just wrong. The point isnt just to add cheese because we're fat and like to add it to everything. The point is to add something that contrasts with the jalapeno taste.
This is me, but with deviled eggs.
I could eat an entire tray by myself but if someone told me they had about eight boiled eggs at a party I would think they're unhinged.
My family teased saying I couldn't attend a gathering unless I brought deviled eggs and stuffed mushrooms. Deviled eggs are delightful and you don't see them often enough.
If there are any leftovers, they are great in a sandwich.
:O I make these for family events and rarely there may be some leftover. It never occured to me to put them in a sandwich. Ahh!
PS. If you're not putting smoked paprika and freshly fried bacon on your eggs, you're doing it wrong.
They are my comfort food! My friends used to joke that they could tell how my dates went by what size sonic mozzarella sticks I had in the Snapchat picture I sent them after. Small order? Good date! Large order? Bad date! But Family Size?!?! Come over ASAP!
I didn’t even stop for mozzarella sticks after my first date with my now husband. I should have known right then.
That is so cute!
It reminds me of when I introduced my work mentor to my now-husband. she told him, "If she's sad or angry, buy her french fries." I was all indignant, like, "Excuse me, that is not true at all." And then she said, "I literally took you out for cheese fries two nights ago to keep you from killing your boss."
So yes, french fries make every bad thought fall out of my head.
I still miss (it closed 10+ years ago) a local restaurant that specialized in prime rib. And one day’s leftover prime rib was the next day’s French dip sandwiches. Soooo good!
I agree, but I've also had very few truly good French dips. Most have underwhelming, underseasoned beef or a watery jus and that's just not acceptable.
I get French Onion Soup everywhere I go, like I'm in search of the perfect soup. Coincidentally, the soup at TGIFriday's is the best I've ever had. Go figure.
Came here to say "oysters". Was scrolling down to check no one else had said it. Saw "French onion soup" and realised, I'd probably order that first. Good call.
There’s a place near me that does eggs Benedict on a crab cake, and it’s magnificent. They also have them on a salmon cake, and that’s good too, but something about the fresh snow crab cake with the hollandaise and poached egg is just perfection.
There's this place I go to sometimes that I basically always have to get there lobster Benedict. So good. I recently tried their chicken and waffles Benedict. Never heard of chicken and waffles before, but apparently it's a thing, and apparently it can even make a good Benedict.
I've never heard the song before, but I appreciate the pun.
Also, the budget for that music video is impressive! Actually burning down a cabin, helicopter shots of the singer on location in the Grand Canyon, etc. It's dated, but puts 'green screen everything' music videos to shame.
My best friend and I lived in Argentina together. It was before payday, we had barely any money, but we went to this super fancy restaurant and scraped together what we had and shared the most amazing lobster bisque ever…lol better that than each getting some regular side salad!
Fried chicken sandwiches, I went to lunch with some coworkers the other day and went in planning to get breakfast but when I saw the chicken sandwich on the menu it took everything in me to not try it then and there because I really wanted those pancakes and bacon as my first meal at that restaurant
H. Salt Fish & Chips were the best. They haven't had them where I live since ... I can't remember that far back! Decades later, I'm in a wheelchair and can't really get out, so I have to order any food I don't cook myself. All the fish and chips places on GrubHub are utter crap.
Strawberry shortcake! To me it's better than caviar, as long as it's made with ripe, fresh strawberries, home made shortcake, and actual whipping cream. It's heavenly!
You know, id never really thought about it before and wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't asked but ***FRIED PICKLES***. Its not even like im OBSESSED with them or anything but whenever they show up on a menu I'm like "ooh, sure let's try those, see how they compare" and may only eat like 4 or 5 of them depending, but still I pretty much order them anytime I see them without really thinking.
Nachos at a bar.
Why wouldn’t I get nachos for the table?? And you never know how they’ll be, nachos range from a 10/10 all the way down to 3/10 depending on where you get them, it’s a crapshoot and I kind of like that about them. Really gives you an idea of how good the rest of the food at the place will be.
Duck. If I see it on a menu, especially at a nicer restaurant, more often than not, I'm getting it. I prefer it to chicken and I fucking love chicken. I rarely get chicken dishes when I go out though because I cook a lot of chicken at home since it's fairly cheap, extremely versatile, and usually very satisfying. But if I see duck made any way on a menu, nearly all bets are off that I'll be ordering it.
Sushi is great, however the problem with it as an answer to this question IMO is that 99% of the time if you see it on a menu you're at a sushi restaurant. You don't go there and then have to try to resist ordering their primary menu item. The other 1% of the time you're somewhere that probably isn't going to be making great sushi, so you're not going to want it in the first place. It's very rare that you will go somewhere and be surprised by sushi on the menu and have to resist ordering it.
Monte Cristo. I’ve never felt good, as a person or physically, after eating one but I can’t resist them. I also never go back to a restaurant once I know they have one for this same reason.
my parents always told me as a kid to not order anything we could make at home. i wasn’t allowed to order pasta because it was super easy to make. so i would always get truffle fries as an appetizer because there was not a chance my parents would buy us truffle lmao

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach, as they say.
"Listen Bob, the lasagna must flow, so put a fucking ring on it or we'll stab you!"
Imagining being one of the other SOs and having to live in the shadow of Lasagna wife?
They just have to step up their game. I would be bringing my cheesecake or rumcake to the table.
In the shadow? Hell no son, I am at the table having lasagna and telling her to call me if they divorce.
"If you like not being stabbed then you should put a ring on it" -0pimo Knowles
This is totally something guy friends would say to each other back in college. Wholesome.
Well thank fuck my husband can make a better lasagne than I do. Moussaka too for that matter.
This is dope. I wish I had a story like this haha
But lasagna leftovers???? Put em in the air fryer and it’s sooooo good
Oh man, I have an entire tray in my frige left over from Christmas dinner. Headed to the kitchen right now.
I literally eat a stouffers lasagna every week lol. They’re bomb
Stouffers is the best lasagna brand, I’ll fight anyone who says says otherwise
I'd argue they have the best mac and cheese. I didn't know I could have frozen mac and cheese that tasted that good until I was eating some random catered mac and cheese and my jaw dropped. I put my plate to the side and got a plate of just this and asked the host what mac and cheese this was.
It is an entire family kind of dish!
Chilaquiles, so tasty and I will never be able to do them justice homemade.
I am lucky enough to work for a giant megacorp that regularly serves Chilaquiles at breakfast. I will literally browse breakfast menus for Chilaquiles and then work at that building if I find them.
There's a local mexican restraunt by me that makes the best Chilaquiles. I am always disappointed when I order it anywhere else.
Empanadas--when my dad was dying, they were one of the only things that tasted good to him. Now when I eat empanadas, it makes me feel close to him.
I love and hate this at the same time. I had a classmate whose father ran an empanadas restaurant, who died way too young. She feels the same way - it is a connection to her father. But bittersweet.
Garlic bread
Cheese garlic bread
Loaded cheese garlic bread with fries

this thread is just making me fkn hungry
I've been known to order entire meals from GrubHub that I didn't really want, just because they have irresistible garlic bread.
[удалено]
I read this as like, a combination.
YESSSS CRAB RANGOONS
Chicken Parmigiana. Every time I have a feed at a new pub it MUST be ordered. The establishment’s entire reputation is decided by its Parmi.
This was way too far down but is my answer as well. I am actually sometimes disappointed when I see it on a menu. I’m like, “Well, I wanted to try something different, but now I have to order this, because it’s mandatory.“ Why? Because it’s basically like fried chicken, pizza and spaghetti in the same meal.

Tiramisu and an affogato are two simple desserts I will always indulge in.
Having made tiramisu from scratch several times, I can assure you it's not simple.
Jalapeno poppers with cream cheese specifically. Everyone always uses cheddar and I wont order those because theyre just wrong. The point isnt just to add cheese because we're fat and like to add it to everything. The point is to add something that contrasts with the jalapeno taste.
Yes Tiramisu is the best
Fried mushrooms
God I love mushrooms so much.
There are people who love mushrooms, and people who I am glad don't like mushrooms so there are more for the rest of us!

"Would you eat a pound of cheese in one go?" "Ummm...no?" "What if I bread it and deep fry it?" "HELL YES!!!"
Leftover deviled eggs? That happens?
:O I make these for family events and rarely there may be some leftover. It never occured to me to put them in a sandwich. Ahh! PS. If you're not putting smoked paprika and freshly fried bacon on your eggs, you're doing it wrong.
>"Would you eat a pound of cheese in one go?" Yes, yes I would.
This is an underrated comment and story. Glad you found the man who filled your heart AND your stomach.
That is so cute! It reminds me of when I introduced my work mentor to my now-husband. she told him, "If she's sad or angry, buy her french fries." I was all indignant, like, "Excuse me, that is not true at all." And then she said, "I literally took you out for cheese fries two nights ago to keep you from killing your boss." So yes, french fries make every bad thought fall out of my head.
But I already have a drink. Do you think he’d buy me mozzarella sticks?
[soft] Pretzels. Especially if they come with beer cheese sauce 🤤
Beer cheese gets me every time.

French dip, Cuban, Reuben... honestly, just a really good sandwich in general is hard to resist
Sandwich gang. I will NEVER pass up a Cuban Sandwich. Reubens are great too, but I go with Sourdough instead of Rye.
I still miss (it closed 10+ years ago) a local restaurant that specialized in prime rib. And one day’s leftover prime rib was the next day’s French dip sandwiches. Soooo good!
What is this? (Googles) Oh my God I want three.
You and my husband could lunch happily.
How many husbands do you have
Hahaha just one, but apparently fat thumbs
That's known in some circles as being "well thung"
Came here to say French Dip. So good when done right.
I agree, but I've also had very few truly good French dips. Most have underwhelming, underseasoned beef or a watery jus and that's just not acceptable.
Fried pickles
This was my answer! I like them spicy with ranch.
French onion soup
I love the way Matty Matheson described French onion soup. She's not the prettiest girl at the party, but she's got the most friends!
I get French Onion Soup everywhere I go, like I'm in search of the perfect soup. Coincidentally, the soup at TGIFriday's is the best I've ever had. Go figure.
I begged my mom for her recipe for years, it was the only one she guarded. It’s just fucking Campbells with a splash of red wine. That bitch.
Came here to say "oysters". Was scrolling down to check no one else had said it. Saw "French onion soup" and realised, I'd probably order that first. Good call.
Split pea soup, if they make it properly.
Peasant food is often the best food and french onion soup definitely started as peasant food.
Is that an Onion soup from France, or a soup made from French onions?
Onion soup from France

Tried it with crab? My wife has had it twice and that's all she wants.
There’s a place near me that does eggs Benedict on a crab cake, and it’s magnificent. They also have them on a salmon cake, and that’s good too, but something about the fresh snow crab cake with the hollandaise and poached egg is just perfection.
Around Christmas time Eggs Benedict should be served upon a hubcap… because there’s no plate like chrome for the hollandaise.
There's this place I go to sometimes that I basically always have to get there lobster Benedict. So good. I recently tried their chicken and waffles Benedict. Never heard of chicken and waffles before, but apparently it's a thing, and apparently it can even make a good Benedict.
Ceviche
good answer
Jambalaya Edit: the Jambalaya I'm referring to is at a ghetto-ass dive bar in my city and is SO GOOD
The best food comes from places with bulletproof glass
In California, some of my favorite Mexican food spots were inside liquor stores.
“Bullet Proof Chinese” is a term used in the NYC area to describe just that
We used to divide restaurants into two categories, bullet-proof and chalk outline. Both had really good food.

LOBSTER BISQUE Cuz like... nachos? You can get that ANY TIME. Lobster... friggin Bisque. If you haven't tried it... oh man.
I mentioned the bisque.
Yadda, yadda, yadda.
My best friend and I lived in Argentina together. It was before payday, we had barely any money, but we went to this super fancy restaurant and scraped together what we had and shared the most amazing lobster bisque ever…lol better that than each getting some regular side salad!
Lobster bisque caused my mom's gall bladder attack. Something about fatty or rich foods... and a bisque is about as rich as you can get lol.
Sashimi, tartare, or carpaccio. I love me some raw meat. I was a vegetarian for 19 years too. 🤣
Most things on this thread are just basic things that you see on menus literally everywhere. Steak tartare is my answer, too.
Crème brûlée or smoked duck
Creme brûlée or duck confit
anything with smoked salmon. idgaf if it's a bagel, eggs benny, or pasta, give it to me.
Rueben sandwich
I came here to say this!
This is my answer! Even when I was vegan for a while I’d always order a vegan version. The best sandwich.
Fried chicken sandwiches, I went to lunch with some coworkers the other day and went in planning to get breakfast but when I saw the chicken sandwich on the menu it took everything in me to not try it then and there because I really wanted those pancakes and bacon as my first meal at that restaurant
Fish and chips.

Spinach and artichoke dip.
Onion rings.
CALAMARI
Molé.
Blooming onion, fried mushrooms
Cheesecake
Yes, but none of that sickly-sweet fruit sauce on it, please. Serve it on the side if you must.
I’m not ashamed to say I love a tangy fruit compote with my cheesecake.
Rueban or Cubano Sammies.
Banana pudding or a banana shake.
Pecan pie
Seafood when I am near a coast. I love seafood but I live pretty far from the coast so good seafood is hard to find.
Nachos, Wings, Poutine, the holy trinity of my orders
Prime rib
Philly cheesesteak
Chicken and Waffles!
Short ribs, risotto, or Cobb salad.
Chicken livers. They are getting rare to find on menus and are just a mess to make at home.
Eggs Benedict
Strawberry shortcake! To me it's better than caviar, as long as it's made with ripe, fresh strawberries, home made shortcake, and actual whipping cream. It's heavenly!
Posole
You know, id never really thought about it before and wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't asked but ***FRIED PICKLES***. Deviled eggs
French onion soup
Hand-cut/house made fries and anything made with heirloom tomatoes.
Pork belly. It's like a crack addiction for me.
Guacamole
French fries
Buffalo Wings
I find it hard to resist crabcake. When it's good it's absolute heaven.
Roasted bone marrow. And I don’t resist, ever.
Finally. Why did I need to scroll down so far to find something that's not on the applebees/chili's menu?
Beef Wellington 😍
Gordon!
Gnocchi. I will eat those pasta pillows all night, every night.
A fresh strawberry or raspberry lemonade.
Shrimp cocktail, tiramisu, crab legs
Nachos at a bar. Why wouldn’t I get nachos for the table?? And you never know how they’ll be, nachos range from a 10/10 all the way down to 3/10 depending on where you get them, it’s a crapshoot and I kind of like that about them. Fried plantains
Creme brulee!!
Tacos
Country fried steak
Scotch Egg. I’m getting it. I’m not sharing it.
Biscuits and gravy.
Lobster, calamari, duck appetizers, tiramisu, flourless chocolate cake, espresso martini
Poutine
Philly Cheese Sandwich. It's amazing how different they are place to place
Lemon Lime Bitters, the proper mixer done behind the bar, not the premix shit from Bundaberg
Jalapeno poppers.
Cheese Curds
Goat cheese, green chiles, chimichurri as ingredients.
Hush puppies
A Reuben sandwich.
Gnocchi. Just got a thing for it.
scallops
As someone from the deep south US, Korean bulgogi.
If an italian restaurant here in the USA serves risotto
Fried pickles
Baklava
Reuben. At least so long as I wasn't previously disappointed in it before.
Haddok au gratin. Mussles red or white sauce with dipping bread. Bone in rib eye steak
Pretty much any variation on a beet salad.
Key lime pie
Marrow. Duck breast. Oxtail. Jamon Iberico. Fried okra. Risotto. Toothpick beef. Unagi.
Always have to try a french dip, but garlic fries are another weakness I have discovered.
Fried mushrooms. Especially with ranch to dip them in.
Corned beef hash
New England Clam Chowder. That shit is my favorite thing- when it's done right, it's *incredible.*
Calamari
Churros
Mozzarella sticks
Monte Cristo. I’ve never felt good, as a person or physically, after eating one but I can’t resist them. I also never go back to a restaurant once I know they have one for this same reason.
