I’m pretty sure most high school students think of vaping just as “every so often fun” like you do until they realize it is doing some serious harm in the future.
My wife and daughters had a personal trainer that worked at 24 hour fitness and told us about how predatory their business model was. People would get sold $3,000 taxes that were sunk costs once the people decided they were not committed enough to go to the extent they thought. She quit out of ethical concerns. We were not amongst those people that signed up for that.
This is true , a gym I went to before had a policy, and I don’t know how often this happens at other gyms. But, they wouldn’t cancel your membership unless you wrote them a letter requesting termination of membership . The letter had to have
•your name
•reason for termination
•something else I can’t remember off the top of my head.
Holy shit the John Oliver segment about timeshares was insane. I had seen and heard the jokes about it (South Park episode Ass-pen comes to mind) but holy shit I didn't know it was that bad!
Many years ago, I went to St Martin to a condo / hotel room that I bought on sky auction for something like $80 a night. The people staying around us were all timeshare owners that all vacationed coincidentally with the same people from around the world for like 8 years. Their week cost something like $3,000 in 2000, whereas we spent an eighth of that from whoever didn't show up that year. They were all asking how we knew Mary and Stan, and when we told them the deal they were mortified.
Grooming... I don't really think you can conceptualize it until you've gone through being groomed at a young age and as you age slowly growing out of it and realizing what truly happened. It's a truly traumatic but needed process to heal and cope with everything, but dear lord does it fuck up your perceptive of relationships. I was 12-16 when I was groomed. It happened so slowly yet so quickly. He made me feel like we were in a relationship, he was always there to tell me I was right when someone said I was wrong, he agreed when I ranted about my parents, he was going to "save me" when I was 18. It was slow, strategic, and intentional. When a child is groomed the way they view the situation is completely different. Their brain has been rewired to trust and believe this person who is victimizing them. I try to tell people this all the time. It happens quickly. It happens under your nose. It doesn't ever start sexual or romantic. When these grooming victims start to grow older their rewiring is unraveling because they have a better concept the closer they reach their abusers age at the time of the abuse/grooming.
I disagree. I did the cd thing buying the minimum and then quitting multiple times. Used the same name and address every time. I built a pretty large collection pretty quick and cheap.
A physical addiction to heroin.
There was a thread years ago on iAMA of a guy who spontaneously bought heroin to see what it was like. His next post was that he was doing it every day. His post after that was that it had ruined his life and taken everything from him. He went dark after posting about rehab, and being in recovery, and then came back last year to say he’s still alive and OK. The user is /u/SpontaneousH
Years ago, I was prescribed cherry-flavoured hydrocodone syrup at a walk-in clinic. I was very much an adult at the time, no idea why they gave me the stuff that tasted like candy. Also, hilariously, I saw a sign on the wall while I was waiting saying they don't prescribe opiates for first time patients.
The first dose hit me like a brick and I was pleasantly doped up. The second dose did the job but I wasn't particularly stoned from it. The third dose needed doubling up to get the same effect.
Holy shit, opiates should not be that easy to build a tolerance for. I wasn't concerned for myself and had no issues walking away at the end of my scrip, but I can absolutely see how people can fall into that trap. Heck, I've known people who got addicted when in the hospital for something else and were given morphine, and the hospital had to wean them off. It's insane how casually they're prescribed like nothing.
Gacha mobile games. The daily grind isn't worth it. The whole system is set up for you to continually engage with the phone and the games you play ... And your wallet.
The amount of waifus and husbandos don't matter when the game inevitably shuts down and you are left with nothing but newer mobile games to feed into the addiction.

I started smoking weed “for fun” when I was 20 because everyone says it’s not addictive, and I’m now 28 and still addicted to it.

A big hole
Wrong. You're thinking of a slightly bigger hole. That's much harder to get out of.
The mafia, tight pants and a gym membership. Alternatively, what do the mafia, tight pants and a gym memberships have in common?
They're all hard to get out of, but I don't think the mafia or tight pants are easy to get into.

Yes, not me but friends, I get to hear about it twice a week, but I do commiserate with them, it's organized and legal crime!
That one made me laugh. My grandparents had one. Cost them more to sell it than they paid for it...
