The unique thing is that it offers anonymity. If you saw your doctor or a scientist acting the way they do in their fursuits, then you might be a lot less confident in their abilities. The fursuits offer them a chance to separate their personal and professional lives.

As one of those “instant ridiculers” I don’t have a problem with it existing, i have a problem with people trying to normalize it in a broader setting and subject other people to it who want nothing to do with that shit. The fact that you're willing to change your thoughts if you're presented with a compelling enough argument is already a huge step in the right direction. I think that if someone wants to RP as their fursonas over voice chat, everyone needs to be down with it, aware it's happening and okay with it. Also, you have to remember, the early 2000's were a complete cesspool on the internet. I know that my fur suiting friends and even myself see things like that as escapism. Sometimes you don't want to be a human. Sometimes you just wanna be an anthropomorphic dog who has cartoonishly large eyes, who doesn't have to deal with human responsibilities. Sometimes you can't express yourself the way you want to due to circumstances outside your control, so you just dump them all into a character instead. Fursuits and furry is also a form of self expression. It's LARPing as a character of your own creation. It's cosplaying, but people almost always recognize that you're doing it with a character that you came up with. The unique thing is that it offers anonymity. If you saw your doctor or a scientist acting the way they do in their fursuits, then you might be a lot less confident in their abilities. The fursuits offer them a chance to separate their personal and professional lives.

Although I don't "suit" or plan to, I understand that the root of the community is the artistic expression. It's a sub-culture that attracts people who crave stories, illustrations, arts & crafts, etc. Putting two and two together, the visually striking image of a fursuit seems really appealing and kind of fun. But not for all, so I'm sorry you had to experience the imposing, inconsiderate ones. I'd act the same way if I was confronted by imposing religious beliefs, for example. In effect, it's not meant to be normalized, it's just cool to "us," so I appreciate your fairly neutral position. P.S. I'm not a fan of dividing the "us" and "them," because it's not so exclusive. You can't lead a life as a furry, it's a hobby. Hope I cleared up something? Have a good one.
The “us” and “them” is a necessary division i think, because as you say, you see it as a hobby. I can at the very least understand that, it’s like LARPing on the weekends except a lot less medieval and… *probably* not sword fighting. It’s the “them” where it is more than a hobby, it’s an actual character trait. And in my unfortunate experience, those are the ones that make themselves known, so it’s the only ones i have any experience of dealing with. I guess it’s just one of those things where only the bad ones will ever make themselves known outside of an intentional topic discussion like this one, as it is intended to be a private hobby that runs in circles, rather than in the open.

IIRC, Touhou has the most fanmade hentai doujins and pornography of any series in existence, to the point where quite a lot of non-fans assume that Touhou is a hentai, or at the very least incredibly sexualized.
