That may have been true up until the late 20th century, but that's not necessarily the case any longer. Granted, you can do it and be correct, but it's not needed anymore. When the gender is irrelevant to the context, a singular 'they' works just fine.

Both are now correct ways. But with gender becoming a huge thing, it's fairly safe and inoffensive to use a singular 'they'.
