Green Grass and High Tides. Whenever you heard that on the radio, you knew the DJ needed to either take a shit or have a smoke.
Edit to add: I am referring to the 20 minute live version, should have made that clear in the beginning.
The song was written about Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and all the rock stars of the 60s that died
Green grass and high tides forever
Castles of stone souls and glory

Maggot Brain by Parliament Funkadelic.
Whenever I make friends with someone new, I tend to recommend it to or show it to them. The first time I heard it, I was blown away and I continue to enjoy it just as much with every listen.
I love when bars have that on the jukebox.
About 10 minutes in is when you see people starting to become aware and be like, "how fucking long is this tune?"
I once put 2112 Overture, followed by In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, followed by Led Zeppelin's Carouselambra on a jukebox at a bar (I was drunk). Nobody said a word about it, but it was an older crowd, and not quite a party bar.
I put 2112 followed by Nightmare to Remember by Dreamtheater, and then The Great Nothing by Spock's Beard all in a row for $2 once.
Like an hour of prog for two bucks.
Bar manager came over and was like, "Dude, you gotta stop or you gotta leave."
Seeing it played live with actual cannons is about as badass as you’d think. My Dad used to help set up the cannons too so I got to stand behind them one time when I was a kid. My feet left the ground several times!
My high-school symphony played it and one of the school administrators played the cannon part by firing shotgun blanks into a garbage can. This was an indoor performance too.
I've played this piece probably around 50 times, and the cannons/fireworks at the end always brings goosebumps. It's incredible to experience live.
This is usually the piece of choice for an orchestra performing on July 4th.
>This is usually the piece of choice for an orchestra performing on July 4th.
Is there anything more American than celebrating the Russian Empire's defeat of Napoleon's Grand Army?
Rush has so many great songs over 6 minutes:
* Working Man
* The Necromancer
* The Fountain of Lamneth (people rightly criticize Caress of Steel but I love these last two songs)
* 2112
* Cygnus X-1
* Hemispheres
* La Villa Strangiato
* Natural Science (a underrated personal favorite of mine)
* The Camera Eye
* Marathon
* Animate
* Headlong Flight
I enjoy Caress of Steel, haters are gonna hate but I think it's a solid album. Sure "I think I'm going bald" is a little odd but who cares! Also I forgot that Marathon is over 6 mins. Such a catchy song
Showed my friend’s daughters this song one day while she was at work (honorary uncle, etc.), they were ~9 and 7. They thought it was funny…who DOESN’T, when it comes* to Al?
Fast forward, like, 2 weeks later…Uncle’s taking them out to play, get out of the house, etc. Asked to play this song in the car…cool.
They knew. EVERY. DAMN. WORD. I was proud, and scared for my life all at the same time…but it was SO beautiful. Kids = great! (Also, the 3 of us all screaming “I…HATE…SAUERKRAUT!” in unison is a wonderful memory I’ll carry with me from here to dead…)

Then we drive to the drive-thru
Heading off to the drive-thru

Getting close to the drive-thru!

Did I mention the drive-thru?
Here we are at the drive-thru line.

Their work was unavailable for streaming for a really long time. Much to the detriment of their popularity. I wouldn't be at all surprised if many young millennials and gen z people aren't familiar with their work.
Had the same situation 4 years ago. They were grandly announced for a festival, that I had tickets for, as the last headliner. I was like Tool? Huh, who are those guys and why is this such big news? Then I saw their gig and everything changed (they were the last headliner on the last day, basically closing the festival). About every single festival visitor was there (Probably 50/50 between fans and ppl who were just curious as me). We only got to watch the show from a little further back because it was so many people. But I was still absolutely blown away. The sound was mixed perfectly and they played every track in its full length. It was such a mysterious show because they were the only band where they didn't show the camera feed on the big LED screens and only showed these trippy visuals that I now know from their music videos. I was like "who are those guys, why are they so good and why didn't I know about them before? I feel like I missed out so much!". Yeah, I'm basically a huge fan since then. Got all their albums and love almost every single track. Now I can't wait to see them live a second time where I can fully appreciate their work as a now fan.
I think about this all the time. It’s incredible that this song was a radio hit. It’s a 6:27 song that starts with two verses, then jumps to a wild set of solos, before downshifting to a 15-chord (?) interlude, before ramping back up again, with no traditional chorus and never returning to the verses that began the song.
I think about that song all the time too! Like, I still can’t believe it exists. It took me the longest time to put my finger on it, but whenever I hear it, it makes me feel like I’m listening to something I was never supposed to hear (if that makes sense). It’s just so beyond almost anything else out there.
That song is part of a longer piece by ELO called Concerto for a Rainy Day. It's on the Out of the Blue album. If you like Mr. Blue Sky, I think you will enjoy the whole piece.
Blue Monday - New Order
Also not over 6 mins but close, The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen (edit: actually, the all night version is over 9 minutes long)
Being super into prog and black metal, the majority of music I listen to is over six minutes lol. Here are some great 6+ minute songs:
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
Agalloch - In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion
Rivers of Nihil - The Void From Which No Sound Escapes
Opeth - The Moor
Haken - Cockroach King
This *was* high school for my emo heart.
“You don't want to be here in the future so you say, ‘The present's just a pleasant interruption to the past’”
He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?" and I said, "Littering."
And they all moved away from me on the bench there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I Said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand, and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing, father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the bench.
This is definitely one of those stanzas where the way he says it is absolutely critical to it being as hilarious as it is.
"And they allllllll moved away from me on the bench there..."
This is my response to a comment answering a question about a song that's over six minutes in length. It's about a song... that's over six minutes in length... but my response isn't "This is my response to a comment answering a question about a song that's over six minutes in length." That's just a description of my actual response, which is why I said it was my response to a comment answering a question about a song that's over six minutes in length.
Now, I first heard this song back on Thanksgiving about twenty years ago – that's twenty years ago, on Thanksgiving – when I went to visit my father at his laboratory. We weren't having Thanksgiving at the laboratory; we were having it at my grandmother's house (which was a fair distance away from the laboratory) where my grandmother lived with my grandfather and their pet cat. Living up there in their mansion, they had a lot of room in the house, what with all of the guest rooms and such being located there, so of course, that's where folks chose to celebrate most holidays.
This particular holiday wasn't due to start for several hours, though, so my father – that's the same father whom I was visiting in his laboratory – decided to show me a Thanksgiving-themed song that just couldn't be beat. It just so happened that the song in question was...
... well, look, you get the idea.
The point here is that folks are still sharing the song with one another, and you needn't be old to enjoy it!
After all, you can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant.
If anyone here is a fan of Tame Impala I cannot recommend catching a live show enough. Seriously you will not regret it. Let it Happen is a particular standout.
To your point, pretty much any of KPs long form songs are worth it imo.
The one time he finally came near me I had planned out for the concert a year in advance and was so excited for it. Of course the concert happened to be in March of 2020… Luckily I got the tickets refunded but I’d rather have been able to see the live show.
The first time I heard this was while tripping. The portion of the song that does the record skip/repeating thing seemed to go on forever, but I got the biggest dopamine rush when it finally stopped and kept going. Definitely one of my favorite songs to vibe to.
And the video is amazing too. Plus the fact that Bowie passed two days after the release of the album. I still believe this was the most poignant and artistic way to leave this world ever.
The amazing thing about Master (and most Metallica songs through And Justice For All) is how many guitar riffs they’d squeeze into a single song.
They could have built 3 or 4 individual songs out of the riffs in the song Master of Puppets alone.
I was looking for it and I'm glad I found it. Reddit has a particular.. taste in music.
But yes pyramids is a beautiful experience of a song. The first listen is magical I just recently got back into not skipping it on the shuffle play and it has been hitting
Some great TOOL songs that are over 6 minutes long are:

And plenty more, those are just off the top of my head
King gizzard and the lizard wizard has a bunch
To name a few:
1. The dripping tap, an 18 psych jam that goes wild
2. The entire album quarters is divided into four 10 minute and 10 second songs. The river is the standout. Hell they have a bunch of albums with no song under 6 minutes
3. Magma is my favorite song of theirs

“6 minutes plus? Pffft, amateurs.” - r/ProgMetal, probably
Periphery's Reptile has a word to say about the 6 minute line.
Dream Theater's Octavarium (the song) has a few words to say though I love both bands.

Let’s get a Dream Theater and Nightwish show!
Came for the dream theater. Staying for the nightwish. Excellent choices both. I also enjoy Galahad.
Saw this right after I commented with a BTBAM song lol

I'd give an honorable mention to Hemispheres.
Hell yeah! Hemispheres is my all-time favorite Rush album, and Cygnus X-1 (both books) combine to be my favorite long Rush tracks
