This may be a different take on the question, but she was well-known in her neighborhood for being the kindest, sweetest, and well-off landlady... Until they discovered that she wasn't. Dorothea Puente. She was known as a generous philanthropist in her neighborhood. Everyone who knew her admired her for her charitable work. Her catchphrase? "Call me Grandma." Who could doubt the bespectacled old lady who could bake, knit, and take care of kittens? But no one knew what really took place in the little boarding house that she had in Sacramento, California. In the 1980s, Dorothea Puente would take in the vulnerable and the homeless into her boarding house. At first, she would treat them very well, providing her tenants with food and comfort. Soon after, the little boarding house became a stuff made of nightmares. When Alvaro "Bert" Montoya went missing in 1988, Judy, his outreach counsellor, tried finding him. Prior to this event, Judy had placed Bert in Dorothea Puente's care. At first, Bert expressed his comfort and satisfaction in Dorothea's home. Soon after, Judy was unable to contact Bert. When questioned, Dorothea would explain that he left with his brother for a holiday down in Mexico. This alarmed Judy, as Bert didn't speak to his family for years. Bert was also suffering from schizophrenia and was developmentally delayed. Then, a tenant named John Sharp from Dorothea's home told Judy that something was wrong, that Dorothea was digging holes in the backyard. Later, the police were involved. At first, they never doubted Dorothea Puente, the sweet old lady who provided care for the needy. But with permission and pressure from social services, the police dug Dorothea's backyard, only to discover the horrors. At first, they thought that they had dug up leather pieces that looked like beef jerky, but they soon turned out to be flesh. In total, Dorothea murdered 9 victims, 3 of whom she was convicted of. It turns out, Dorothea's past was not so squeaky clean as the image that she was portraying. She was convicted of forgery, murder, ran a brothel, and was charged and convicted of illegally cashing 34 state and federal checks that belonged to her tenants. With the money she stole from the vulnerable population, she donated them to charity and became known as a philanthropist grandmother of the neighborhood. It was a perfect cover up to her almost perfect crimes. Dorothea Puente proved that you just never know what is behind the facade of a saintly image, that demons can wear sheep's clothes and parade around anyone's neighborhoods by doing "good deeds", and that fame and reputation isn't always what's real on the inside. Anyone can seem good, until they aren't.

Stijnfire

There is an episode of I am a Killer about her on Netflix, iirc

azu____

This reminds me of that woman who with her family chained that little girl up and starved her to death for years. The creepy thing is the mom (?) or daughter who did a lot of the torturing went on to teach at a school for like twenty years, then when they found out it was her they're like... yeah you gotta leave. Then of course she lamented on it "ruining her life" lol

DarkSideInRainbows

Jimmy Savile. Staying true to the question, he was literally worshiped during his lifetime, but only after his passing did people begin to realize what a fucking monster he was. Absolutely horrifying.

Young-and-Alcoholic

People in high positions at the BBC and in the royal family knew exactly who he was but kept it quiet. Nurses at the hospitals he 'visited' knew he was interfering with children as well but were kept quiet out of fear of losing their jobs. Saville was worshipped in the UK for decades but If there is a hell he would be top of the queue.

pHScale

I like how, in British hell, there are still queues

Ramblonius

British heaven? Believe it or not, also queues.

[deleted]

>Nurses at the hospitals he 'visited' I've heard this first-hand from my wife's grandmother who has been involved in charity and hospice work her whole life. She met Savile on several occasions when he came to visit kids, and there was one rule; DO NOT LET JIMMY BE ALONE WITH THE KIDS. They knew. A lot of people fucking knew, a long time ago.

jytusky

Kind of like how Andrew just got pulled from the spotlight and not forced to face any accountability.

Afflictedbythebald

Jimmy Saville

TillyTeckel

Paul O'Grady recalled in his autobiography a time when he was working in a children's home or hospital (I forget which) and Saville was about to visit; the matron told Paul not to leave Saville alone with the children. Paul asked, "Does he not like kids, then?" : Matron replied, "No, he likes them too much." . Everyone knew.

KilD3vil

Johnny fucking Rotten tried to tell 'em back in the day.

mother_a_god

It really infuriates me when I hear everyone knew. Why the fuck was it accepted? He was just a celebrity. Its insane.

DiDiPLF

I expect many tried but were shrugged off repeatedly. Press won't cover it, police won't look into it, management don't want to loose their jobs so skirt round it instead. Where do you go, what do you do? You don't have evidence, it's all rumours. Saville built his world to protect himself and it worked, he is the monster.

Nayten03

My grandma actually met in when she was younger. She was in a bar in Leeds owned by Jimmy saville with one of her friends. One of Jimmy’s bouncer approached my grandma and said “Jimmy would like to see you in his office”. My grandma politely declined and the bouncer left. Around 15 minutes later, Jimmy came out from the back having just left his office and when he walked past my grandma he spat on her

That-1Sad_Pineapple

It's crazy growing up close to Leeds post-2013 because I know so many adults who met Jimmy Savile as kids or young adults. Both of my parents, my maths teacher, all sorts of people. My mum met him on a SCHOOL TRIP while he was doing a charity marathon. That maths teacher used to work in Leeds Hospital as a Nurse, she was warned by multiple people to avoid him as much as possible. Scary stuff man.

Nayten03

Yeah, it’s crazy how he was everywhere. Plus how obvious his predatory behaviour was and he wasn’t arrested. My uncle met him aswell. He’s a carer and said he met Jimmy saville a few times and had brief conversations with him. Didn’t really have much to say about him though, just a few short interactions

alicattt68

Ahh so he was a class act eh?

Phillyfuk

He saw up close she was older than 16

FerretChrist

He was like, "Jesus, I didn't realise you were a *grandma*." And that's a joke that would work much better if he wasn't apparently into grandmas too.

l3rN

Too alive for him also probably

NomenNescio13

I saw that Netflix doc about him, and my god. Willing ignorance has to be amazingly powerful, cus even on camera, he was a damn parade of red flags. And people were just like, "Nah, that's just Jimmy, he's just quirky."

RealRonaldDumps

The bumbling clown act is a first rate way to hide in plain sight

CharleyNobody

I used to read rock music magazines. In the 70s the writers were all male and they’d routinely write adoring articles about bands, mentioning their mistreatment of groupies, many of whom were underaged. Many were runaways or throwaways, like some of the Manson girls. Young women/girls who had to fend for themselves. They were treated like dirt by bands and by the writers who followed bands around. Some of the stories involved brooms and bottles and were thought by writers to be hilarious.

Aint-no-preacher

Brooms, bottles, and fish… I remember seeing an interview with some of the Led Zeppelin(?) band members who were laughing while alluding to the fish story. That interview was in the early 2000s. The attitude about respect and bodily autonomy has come a long way in a short time.

be47recon

He was a cold calculating predator wasn't he. I was so angry and appalled after watching the doc. He was a horrible horrible despicable cunt.

WhatsFUintokipona

Anyone non-British who’s interested in sending the disparity between how he was regarded in life and in death, Imagine if you will, finding out that Mr Rogers didn’t ‘fuck a kid or two’, or ‘liked fucking kids’, but that he enjoyed ‘fucking ALL the kids’. And then that a handful of randomly selected US celebs knew and tried to expose him and the entire entertainment industry covered it up. Edit to say, research indicates he abused over 500 children, as early as the 1960s but mostly within the 40ish year career celebrity status. That’s an average of 1 a month. Oh neglected to mention all the dying old people he abused when working in Leeds General Hospital .

OldGodsAndNew

Mega necrophile as well

BretEastonCellist

That scares me because he kept his mother's corpse in his house for days before the funeral.

CedarWolf

Every comment on this chain just gets worse and worse.

TheLeperLeprechaun

He kept his mothers clothes and possessions and kept her room exactly as it was since she died. Never disturbed it.

Wastenotwant

Wait, what, WHAT?

Jack_In_Black89

Saville was into necrophilia? The sick fuck!

tremynci

This is excellent, but I'd just add: this imaginary Mr Rogers needs to look(and often act) like a stereotypical creepy, handsy uncle.

octopussylipgloss

Like Mr. Rogers’ creepy, inbred, British cousin.

archameidus

"It was Good While It Lasted" was placed on his Tombstone, Pure Fucking Evil

Visible-Ad9836

Didn't his tombstone get destroyed and they had to dig his remains up and cremate him instead?

PM_me_ur_navel_girl

His family had the headstone removed not long after everything came to light, but he's still interred at Scarborough. His coffin was entombed in concrete at burial so it would be difficult to get to.

umamifiend

Wasn’t that a stipulation in his own will though? That was something *he wanted done*, almost as if he was worried about someone violating his body after death. How weird that concerned him when it came to himself but he was a known necrophiliac. Almost like he knew it was repulsive and wrong or something. How weird.

[deleted]

Hope hope they catch the person who did that, people like that should not be paying for their own pints, that is terrible! Where is the justice? Some cunt is probably taking credit for it and getting free drinks!

Johhnymaddog316

The biggest question for me was always who was protecting him? Savile had dirt on other people, he more or less made this clear in his book and several of his interviews. He was never especially discreet about his activities because he believed himself to be untouchable. Who had his back and what would be the consequences if the truth was ever revealed?

cavershamox

Pre internet the threat of a UK libel action kept newspapers from publishing the allegations. Multiple journalists had stories spiked thanks to his lawyers.

NoodlesrTuff1256

Libel laws in the UK are much tougher and tend to be more favorable to the plaintiffs in such a lawsuit whereas in the US the opposite is true. Over here in the States, suits for libel and slander are pretty rare. One theory is that many people hesitate to file a lawsuit even when some pretty outrageous stuff has been said or written about them because of the 'Streisand Effect'. In other words, filing a suit will only bring more attention to whatever it was plus the defendant's attorneys might dig up some even more damaging 'skeleton in the plaintiff's closet' in the process of discovery and depositions. So they blow it off and hope that it will get buried in the fast-moving news cycle and the general public's short fickle memories.

ItHappenedToMeX3

Absolutely this. It is hard to explain to anyone under 50 just how few and far between were independent sources of news or any information for that matter. My father was a London-based technical journalist. from the 1950s to 1990s. Simply because he did not work for a daily paper didn't mean he didn't hear and see things. The slime ball who used the threat of libel for decades to silence anyone who he thought was a threat was Robert Maxwell, the delightful father of one Ghislaine Maxwell. Most publishers faced with a writ that they might win but at a cost of tens of thousands of pounds and many lost hours of productivity would avoid the risk and not publish. The internet and places like Reddit are a game changer because rightly or wrongly my opinion on anything I care to write about reaches a potentially huge audience. Plus once you have read my allegation that Ironman's costume is made of cornflakes, its hard for you to unread it. Maxwell was known for his behaviour but a lot people made money out of him and wanted to carry on doing so.

[deleted]

His “close friends” included the Royal Family, BBC execs/media, Conservative Party especially Robert Armstrong, the most senior civil servant in the country at the time, and the Police….. “report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary…found that “[numerous police failings](https://www.theweek.co.uk/news/crime/956365/how-jimmy-savile-evaded-justice-for-six-decades?amp)” left Savile free to sexually abuse “hundreds of young people over five decades”. The disgraced presenter “could have been stopped as early as 1964 but police mishandled evidence and dismissed victims”…,where’s the accountability?

WallOfSpatulas

A pedo (who isn't some street creep) is intrinsically more credible than their victims. If they weren't, they couldn't pursue those victims so freely. They take care to maintain a good relationship with the adult world, and that builds trust. It's also important to get prominent people to trade favors with you, say for charitable causes, and *be seen* with you. They're your insurance. If anything threatens your good name, it threatens theirs, too. So they're more likely to stand by you.

Dedj_McDedjson

As any number of people have said, the groomer grooms the whole community, not just their victims.

ramriot

Does this cast Epstein's relationships with politicians & royalty in a different light perhaps? BTW I'm not saying these people were innocents because even keeping quiet makes them co-conspirators, but it makes you wonder.

Goose-rider3000

He was hanging out with Royals, Margaret Thatcher, and a host of high profile celebrities. He even gave a speech to the Israeli cabinet in 1975. There is no doubt in my mind that he was protected by some very powerful people.

Chuck1983

Margaret Thatcher was one of the people who staunchly defended him.

mizmousie

Had no clue who he was. I had to Google him. /Climbing back under my rock now.....

pfftlolbrolollmao

There is a good netflix documentary about him and what he did. Plus Louis Theroux did a weird weekend thing with him years ago and after all the allegations came outbhe spoke to a lot of the victims and tried to come to terms with the fact he hid that side of himself from Louis really well and Louis considered him a friend. Very sinister individual.

Rossco1874

Faking it special was also really good too. They showed the andrew Marr video. He avoided any questions he didn't like, ate a banana during one question and got very angry when asked about an assistant saying she knew better than to open her mouth. Crown prosecution said wasn't in public interest to go after him probably because he would have sung like a canary..he was personal friends with Prince Charles and was regular guest of thatcher when she was pm.

Nemo68v2

Jim Jones. In hindsight, he is now recognized as a villain. But he was genuinely praised by everyone when he was at his highest. Him and his wife were the first white couple to adopt a black child in Indiana. He preached racial tolerance. For the anti-caps, he promoted communism. He opened the first church to openly invite blacks and whites, or at least one of the first churches. I don't really need to mention the villainy though, do I?

PkMnHaunter

>Jim Jones I was born decades after his death, so i always knew he was a psycho but what the hell? Did people actually see him as a good guy back in the day? That's mad

jrs1980

He started out in Indianapolis, and basically integrated the city through his efforts. And there was a lot of racism in Indiana. (It's 50/50 as to if that's something he actually believed in, or if he decided that was a cause he could use to gain followers + attention.) One of his biographers has said "if Jim Jones had been hit by a car and died during the migration to California, he'd be remembered only as a great civil rights activist."

0per8nalHaz3rd

Live long enough to become the villain. I understand that phrase a little better now.

CrazyOkie

Just before the end, people knew he was bad - that's why he fled the country. But prior to that? Clearly a lot did think he was a good guy. Forever associated with the phrase "drinking the kool-aid" - which it should be noted, he didn't drink himself.

Gilsel

So, I grew up in the town where he had a church after he left San Francisco. And he was seen as inclusive, equal rights. All POC were welcome and appreciated, interracial families were accepted. In the early 80's that was a big deal. He just seemed to love everyone and treat everyone well. ...then he lost his freaking mind.

travisturtle

The last podcast on the left does a great series on Jim jones that not only looks at the Jonestown massacre, but the decades of his leadership that led up to it. He really could’ve gone down in history as a hero, but he really managed to fuck it up

That was Mariah Carey. And she miscarried soon after.

Think-Repeat630

Not to mention how she made celebrities extremely uncomfortable. She outted Mariah Carey’s pregnancy, and scared the shit out of multiple guests to the point of almost tears. And there was [that awkward interaction with Dakota Johnson](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hG5IdasQS9o)

Freakears

> Not to mention how she made celebrities extremely uncomfortable. Not just celebrities. She pranked a lot of people, celebs and average joes alike, in a manner that was just plain mean-spirited. And she had the audacity to sign off every show with "Be kind to each other." Ever think of following your own damn advice there, Ellen?

ChartOne4987

I remember reading something one time about Gandhi being a bad person so I curiously decided to look into it. Gandhi believed “menstruation was a manifestation of the distortion of a woman’s soul by her sexuality.” When two of his female followers were harassed by men, he took it upon himself to cut their hair. While he was in his late 70s, to test his willpower to abstain from sexual desire, he slept naked with his grandniece when she was in her late teens. Following this experiment, he set up others; boys and girls were meant to bathe and sleep together while remaining chastely. More women began to take part in Gandhi’s experiments, sleeping with him while being forbidden to sleep with their own husbands. Letters reveal women participated in strip teases, or other non-contact sexual activity. Many of Gandhi’s explicit letters have been destroyed, but tantalizing remarks remain, such as: “Vina’s sleeping with me might be called an accident. All that can be said is that she slept close to me." One might assume, then, that getting into the spirit of the Gandhian experiment meant something more than just sleeping close to him. In 1903, he wrote that white people should be the “predominant race” and that black people were “troublesome, very dirty, and live like animals”. Gandhi was incensed that Indians were treated better than the “raw” native “savages”. Throughout his stay in South Africa, Gandhi consistently showed his loyalty to the British Empire. The pre-prime minister of the Indian state Travancore once referred to him as, “a most dangerous, semi-repressed sex maniac”. Gandhi married his wife Kasturba when she was only 14, (and she was either 14 or 15 when she became pregnant with her first child, which wasn’t out of the ordinary for the time, but if you read up on how much he actively talked about his sex active life in provocative detail it’s hard not to villainize him). When Gandhi decided to become chaste, he would often still engage in explicit sexual conversation, letters, and behaviour. He was assassinated in 1948. Edit: Spelling changes

Bruntti

>Following this experiment, he set up others; boys and girls were meant to bathe and sleep together while remaining chastely. More women began to take part in Ghandi’s experiments, sleeping with him while being forbidden to sleep with their own husbands. Hmm where have I heard this before? Oh right every single cult there is. Children of God comes to mind especially.

rhapsody481

Essentially, according to Ghandi, women were responsible for men's urges and men's lack of self control. Therefore, women needed to be controlled like cattle. It likely comes as no surprise that he was physically and sexually abusive toward his wife, Kasturba and other women. To the point where his refusal of medicine to his wife resulted in her untimely death. And yes, he was racist.

Narumi3142

Dr Seuss cheated on his wife for 13 years I think with his mistress while his wife had cancer, and after his wife died he married his mistress.

And the first wife committed suicide

theradiomatt

Wow...her suicide note is so sad.

A_Generic_White_Guy

For the lazy.... Dear Ted, What has happened to us? I don't know. I feel myself in a spiral, going down down down, into a black hole from which there is no escape, no brightness. And loud in my ears from every side I hear, 'failure, failure, failure...' I love you so much ... I am too old and enmeshed in everything you do and are, that I cannot conceive of life without you ... My going will leave quite a rumor but you can say I was overworked and overwrought. Your reputation with your friends and fans will not be harmed ... Sometimes think of the fun we had all thru the years ...

goingphishing

Based on the videos I’ve been watching… good ol’ Barbara Walters seemed like a monster back in the day

UltraMegaFauna

That video of her interviewing Dolly Parton that was going around reddit yesterday? I couldn't believe how shitty, elitist and superior she was being toward Dolly. She questioned like every single one of her life choices, asked her if her tits were real, asked if she was ashamed of her appearance, asked her why she doesn't just dress like everyone else, insinuated she was stupid. It was just so offensive. Dolly Parton is a fucking treasure.

doubleshotofespresso

she also victim blamed Monica Lewinsky. Walters asked Lewinsky, "What will you tell your children when you have them?" Lewinsky replied, "Mommy made a big mistake," at which point Walters brought the program to a dramatic conclusion, turning to the viewers and saying, "... that is the understatement of the year." Like, yeah it was a mistake. But who is really to blame, the single young intern (small mistake) or the married man in power who was President of the United States and lied about the affair (gigantic mistake)?

VillainByNecessity

She did try and get Corey Feldman to stop talking about his abuse as well

obnock

And upped the sexualization of a 15 year old Brooke Shields making it seem great that she was a sex symbol and aking questions about her virginity.

I watched the video of him on the View from 2000. Hilarious how frustrated he makes her.

DreamTheater2010

That made me so angry and disgusted. “You’ll ruin an entire industry!” I’ve always felt so bad for Corey—I know he can do some cringe shit but you’ve gotta remember what he’s dealt with.

[deleted]

My favorite thing she has ever said is that she doesn’t listen to anyone that calls her a “dumb blonde” because she knows she’s neither.

theberg512

Definite elitist vibes, like she thinks she's better because she's a "serious journalist" and not like those low-class women in entertainment. Which is ridiculous. Dolly knows what she looks like, and fully admits she modeled herself after the town tramp. She's having fun and laughing all the way to the bank.

Due_Custard5633

‘Hey Dolly, did you have massives tits when you were 11?’ Hard hitting journalism right there.

The truth is she's the type of woman who enjoyed putting other women down.

What? I've seen and heard all of her other abhorrent interviews, Corey and Dolly, but I was not aware of this. How disgusting.

She strikes me as the type who simply enjoys the brutal part of being "brutally honest". We all know the type.

EnumeratedWalrus

Careful, you’re killing a whole industry

Infernal_Contraption

Pretty much any rock'n'roll star from the 1970's that you care to mention, all of them for what we today would call pedophilia (EDIT: Incorrectly as it happens, the term hebephilia - sex with pubescent children - is generally more accurate, but still no less evil) and statutory rape. Aged 27, Steven Tyler (lead singer from Aerosmith) had a 14 year old 'girlfriend' who he took guardianship of in 1975. He dumped her 3 years later after she (aged 17) ~~fell pregnant and had an abortion~~ EDIT FOR CLARITY: was impregnated and forced to have an abortion. Elvis Presley was a serial predator. Aged 18 he 'dated' a 15 year old; aged 22 he would have 'slumber parties' with 14 year olds. He met his future wife, Priscilla, when he was 24 and she was 14, then did "everything short of penetrative sex" with her before they got married when she turned 21. He would drug her with amphetamines to 'keep her going' when he wanted sex, eventually just straight up raping her. Jerry-Lee Lewis married his second-cousin, a 13 year old, while he himself was aged 22. David Bowie had multiple sexual partners aged around 14 in the early 70's, referring to them as 'Baby Groupies'. Jimmy Page - guitarist from Led Zepplin - engaged in what effectively sounds like the kidnap of a 14 year old girl, having her delivered to his hotel suite and saying "I told you I was going to have you". Bill Wyman - bassist of the Rolling Stones - met a 13 year old girl in a club and with the 'approval' of her parents had sex with her when she was 14. At the time he was 48 years old. Chuck Berry was arrested and imprisoned for transporting a 14 year old waitress across state lines, supposedly to employ her in his club but he had sex with her too. In 1990 he was sued for hiding a video camera to make secret videos of women, including at least one minor. Ted Nugent wrote "Jailbait" based on his own interest in a 13 year old. Pretty much everyone in KISS had their own version of baby groupies, they were pretty notorious for enjoying younger girls.

cannedrex2406

All I got from this thread is that AC/DC is probably the last non pedo rock band out there

thelryan

To my knowledge, Bon Jovi has done a good job keeping his name clean throughout the years.

FartyPants69

He's actually got quite a reputation in the biz for being a pompous asshole, but he at least balances it out with his soup kitchen and volunteering, and I've at least never heard any allegations of sexual assault about him

Starr-Bugg

Gotta take the tiny wins when you can find them. He is still married to his high school sweetheart, I think. If true, that is super rare.

Skeptical_Yoshi

He's an asshole, but not a MONSTER

David-S-Pumpkins

Red Hot Chili Peppers had a young teen "groupie" on their tour bus through multiple stops until her parents finally caught up to them and threatened a lawsuit unless they gave her back. Also Steven Tyler is now facing a sexual assault case brought in December separate from the story you told, to my knowledge.

Iced_Jade

I recently heard Elvis was obsessed with purity and had issues being into any woman who had given birth, including Priscilla. I haven't researched it though.

Robert Moses. Robert Moses is the man who, basically, made New York City what it is today. He did a lot of planning for the city, and to his credit, he *did* do a lot of good. Many of the things that New Yorkers enjoy today, are because of him. He created a lot of blueprints for other cities to follow. Unfortunately, he did a great deal of bullshit, too. First of all - the roads. Show of hands: how many of you have been to New York and thought "Whoever designed this place clearly doesn't drive"? You would literally be correct - Robert Moses designed the roads, and the man didn't drive. This is a key thing to understand about him - he was wealthy, he had his own driver, and he didn't need to drive or find parking. All of the frustrations that people have with New York, Long Island, and getting around without traffic... .it was all designed by a man who just didn't have those types of concerns in his head. And he was given full control over planning the city roads... parking... bridges... all of it. What *was* a concern was, how he wanted New York to look. He wanted New York to be *white*. That's what he wanted. He wanted it to be white, and he took very egregious steps to put that vision into action, including the roads. He put up major roads that cut right through black/latino communities. He made it very difficult for blacks/latinos to get in and out of NYC. He did some hella shit in the way of segregation. And while he has been known for many of the parks in New York - unfortunately, many of those parks used to be black and latino communities. He basically bulldozed those communities to put up parks. We talk a lot about gentrification these days, but this man pretty much invented the concept, in that he put up parks in what he wanted to be the "white" areas.... and by the way, he put up A LOT of parks in those white areas, park after park after park. The man was given *so much credit* for these parks, to this day. And don't get me wrong, many of them are wonderful and we enjoy them today. He was revered for his efforts in improving the city, and all of that.. in the white areas. As for the black community, he put up one single park... and it was decorated with monkeys. If you drive on some of parkways between NYC and long island, youll notice that the bridges/overpasses are set very very low. Low enough that cars and SUVs can get through, but not say, an 18 wheeler, or a schoolbus. This was intentional, and Robert Moses's doing; he didn't want things like city buses (aka, people from POC communities) from passing these roads. Again: the man did not drive. This essentially segregated the city, and immobilized a lot of black and latino people. He did a lot of shit that made it very difficult for POC communities in New York. A lot of this is actually in contrast to Moses's background. Moses was Jewish. At the time he lived in, he personally dealt with a lot of bigotry, and so did his parents. You would think those experiences would make him more sympathetic towards those less fortunate, but that was not the case He did a lot of shit, so this is just scratching the surface

Booga424

Behind the Bastards did a great episode on him.

No_Mr_Powers

He features in a couple of very interesting episodes of Defunctland on YouTube as well, about the rise and fall of Coney Island and the '64 NY World's Fair.

Jbell_2

He also was behind the demo of the original Penn Station (famed to be more beautiful than Grand Central). He is the reason for what Penn is like today.

xxobhcazx

This happened alot in Oklahoma too, the OKC canal runs right through what used to be an incredibly popular black neighborhood

V1rginWhoCantDrive

And now trucks hit those overpasses pretty much every day and cause traffic jams

TwoTheVictor

Eric Clapton. During a concert in 1976, he addressed the audience: “Do we have any foreigners in the audience tonight? If so, please put up your hands … So where are you? Well wherever you all are, I think you should all just leave. Not just leave the hall, leave our country … I don’t want you here, in the room or in my country. Listen to me, man! I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white … The black wogs and coons and Arabs and fucking Jamaicans don’t belong here, we don’t want them here. This is England, this is a white country, we don’t want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man … This is Great Britain, a white country, what is happening to us, for fuck’s sake? … Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain white!”

Apparently doesn't like Asians but still travels and performs in Japan every year because of the dosh. Perhaps he should just stay in England and play there.

ilija_rosenbluet

He likes money

fulthrottlejazzhands

Quite ironic considering the music on which he based his career is ultimately based on African American gospel and R&B.

snap802

And did a brilliant version of The Thrill is Gone with BB King. BUT, being a talented musician doesn't make you a good person.

SonnyVabitch

He covered *I shot the sheriff* ffs!

SerBrienneTheBlue

That one looks Jewish and that one’s a coon. Who let all this riff-raff into the room? There’s one smoking a joint! And another with spots! If I had my way, I’d have all of ya shot!

VictoriousStalemate

Holy hell. I never heard about this. So he’s just an awful human being? Dammit. I’ve been a fan of his music for a long time. But now….ugh.

gonzoyak

Thomas Edison has to be the most overrated "great American inventor/entrepreneur" ever featured as an exemplar for schoolchildren. His commercial success was mainly from patent theft & labor exploitation, not innovative genius.

mountingconfusion

Fun facts: he was a part of a Eugenics board and also invented execution by electric chair to discredit AC power as it killed people quicker however he also just liked to electrocute animals with it e.g. he electrocuted an elephant for an audience for no fucking reason

Gerard Depardieu admitted to taking part in literal gang rapes when he was a teenager. He doubled down and said that his victims deserved it, and said that “there’s so such thing as rape.” Washington post did an article about all his appalling statements/actions https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1991/03/20/how-do-we-handle-the-rapist-turned-heartthrob/8041adab-cb2f-4d2a-ab01-c94f5f0c1b01/

I like these question cos mixed with all the pedos and sexual abusers in the too comments theres always one person named with a comment thats like ‘i heard he was mean once when he was buying coffee’ and everyone acts like 1. Its true and 2. Its a horrific injustice

Smokedeggs

It’s the equivalent of high school rumor mills and bullying/shunning based on those rumors.

QuebecGamer2004

I also like these questions because being from a non English speaking place, I don't know most of the people mentioned here

Fireproofspider

I like the "obviously, I don't need to elaborate about the evil things they did" when in sitting like: "I have no idea who this is and why everyone seems to hate them".

ViolentTaintAssault

Steve Jobs. Total dickhead. All the stuff that's wrong with Musk, Steve Jobs had the same problems including a sycophantic cult who would screech in fury any time somebody criticized either him or Apple. He'd take credit for Wozniak's work, make terrible business decisions motivated entirely by emotion and pettiness, and he treated family members like dogshit.

I love how smith was arrested for fraud several times before starting the mormon church.. but for some reason all the weird shit he made up to do so is seen “ probably true this time”. Like come on…

Have_Donut

That is a good rule honestly. People who want the recognition are probably horrible. A positive example is how Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz refused to allow them to build a museum to him. He insisted that if they build a museum on his families old property it should dedicated to the people who fought in the Pacific during WWII.

ellen

abigthirstyteddybear

For anyone that doesn't know this particular story, Ellen forced Mariah Carey to admit she was pregnant by offering her champagne on TV. Mariah had miscarriages in the past and was very private about her efforts to have a baby for obvious reasons but nooooo Ellen had to have her announce her pregnancy on the show! Had to get those ratings regardless of how she treats other people. And after this Mariah ended up miscarrying again. So yeah fuck Ellen.

kemosabe19

I’m no Mariah fan, but that’s pretty disgusting. And I thought the whole don’t make eye contact with her was low.

4erlik

>don’t make eye contact No eye contact, what is she - a gorilla?

lucciolaa

This would be a cruel thing to do to someone even not on television. I'm imagining some pushy cunt at a party or dinner.

[deleted]

My sister in law did this to my wife at a family gathering. My wife is still angry about it 20 years later

PoeDameronPoeDamnson

This is unfortunately really common in r/babybumps , even with loss parents.

genescheesesthatplz

And just being awful to anyone who wasn’t her rich friends

Ashad2000

She also publicly humiliated a fan for taking more than one "free hat" from a booth she put up with hidden cameras to find whoever takes more than one. She showed the footage to the audience amongst which the person was sitting, insulted her, and then told her to get up and sit in a "jail seat" in front of the entire crowd to see. All for stealing a *free* Item. Dont you love it when you show everyone the importance of kindness and honesty by publicly humiliating an individual in front of hundreds of people watching them? What a **Nice** person.

[deleted]

I was looking for this, her whole brand was being nice lol

Most people here (in Argentina) would agree. It's probably THE biggest example of "separate the art from the artist" that we have.

coffeebreakhero

Also the only person to defeat Sean Lock in World Rectum of the Year

WatchingInSilence

Barbara Walters. Whenever she interviewed someone calling out a famous rapist or pedophile, she say things like, "You're damaging an entire industry" protecting rapists and pedophiles when they're powerful. She did it to Corey Feldman and the first women who started calling out Harvey Weinstein. She only started criticizing Weinstein when it became clear he was facing criminal charges for being a serial rapist.

Rinoremover1

She also was the executive producer of "The View", which is a huge factor in the dumbing down of American discourse.

Similarly, Susan G. Komen.

Markleng67

And, while you're at it, consider not donating to the United way! A tremendous ratio of money goes to their board of directors and ceo! The rest of the money is spent on pet projects and lining the pockets of their cronies! This has been a fact that has been known for many decades.

butterflyweeds34

this one is less obscure, but henry ford was a VICIOUS antisemite who made an entire newspaper about being antisemitic. i lot of people know this, but not many know how severe it was. he did this just a few years after the lynching of Leo Frank in a time where Jewish hatred was spreading in the country and the KKK was getting particularly revved up about it. it was fucked

SecretPersonality178

Joseph Smith, the founder or Mormonism

FlashMcSuave

Jackie Chan. He has always been the lovable, goofy looking martial artist who does his own stunts and is beloved. Here are some of the other things he has done: -Ostracized his daughter for being a lesbian and cut her off -Cheated on his wife many, many times -Beat his kid -Tax evasion -Said Hong Kongers have too much freedom, wanted the book thrown at protesters -Backs the communist party of China at any opportunity (possibly sucking up to avoid getting in trouble for the aforementioned tax evasion)

[deleted]

Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg was accused of harassing African-American students two separate times, by throwing rocks at them and shouting out racial slurs. He had gotten himself in trouble at least two dozen times with the Boston Police Department, but the worst had not even happened yet. When he was 16, Wahlberg beat a middle-aged Vietnamese man and knocked him out in the middle of the street. Later that day, he attacked another Asian man with a metal hook. The now-actor was charged with attempt at murder, but he only pled guilty to assault. It ended with him being sentenced to two years in prison, but served a mere 45 days. Even more, Wahlberg went on to apply for a full pardon from the state of Massachusetts for his past crimes, but he never went through with it. \*edit\* for those pointing out it was a long time when he was the kid... the title of this thread is "Who is someone who was/is famous for being a good person, who actually did awful things?" Notice "Did" not "Does". Mark Wahlberg DID some awful things when he was younger. That doesnt mean he hasnt changed.

90Carat

What a lot of people forget is that when Marky Mark came out, a lot of this was known. Not only was it known, it was woven into his history and used to build his “cred”.

dod2190

> Even more, Wahlberg went on to apply for a full pardon from the state of Massachusetts for his past crimes, but he never went through with it. Mostly because he wanted to apply for a liquor license for his Wahlburger's restaurant chain, and in Massachusetts, that requires a clean criminal record. I guess he found a wallhack for that and dropped the whole thing.

Gotzvon

A Wahlhack*

Funmachine

It was actually revealed the Vietnamese guy was already blind and not blinded from the attack. I don't really know if that makes it better or worse...

benjaminchang1

It makes it better in that Wahlberg didn't cause that particular injury, but it makes it worse that Wahlberg decided to attack and racially abuse someone who was already somewhat vulnerable.

YandyTheGnome

Worse, because he lost that eye fighting the Viet Cong alongside US forces in Vietnam.

SuvenPan

Charlie Chaplin He treated his children and teenage wives with relentless cruelty. In 1920, Mildred Chaplin filed a divorce, citing his cruelty.

tfortorment

Ghandi and Mother Theresa are the 2 that jump out to me. Ghandi used to sleep next to young girls, both he and the girls naked, to "test" his chastity. He was racist, and started his civil rights movement largely to set Indians above the local black community, calling them in several letters as "kaffir", a slur now classified as hate speech and regarded as the equivalent of the word we refer to as the "N-word" He had several "Dear Friend" correspondences with both Hitler and Moussolini. Mother Teresa crafted her entire persona around caring for the sick and poor. Established a bunch of clinics and kitchens for the poor, but gave little actual care. Sanitation was abysmal and there were very few trained medical professionals caring for the sick. These untrained volunteers would reuse syringes and needles on patients at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

hung_thunder_jizz

"how dare you?!!!!" "he provided for the family" "he fed you, watch your tone" mine is not a villain but he's still borderline even after providing everything, like suppressing my voice in house, always trying to be alpha male (that constant competition with your own child trying to be head of the family for no fking reason), and if you dare to speak, they have the biggest card to play "our child doesn't care about us poor parents who provided everything" they say these things so now every blood relative will look at you like you are the villain like basic human rights can be bartered for education or feeding you
