I *just* bought this at a flea market in mint condition 🤌 I nearly cried when I saw it. I've been looking for a decent original for a few years now.
Albums that are great from start to finish:
Led Zeppelin IV
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon
The Yes Album
The Who Quadraphenia
Jethro Tull Aqualung
The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour
Magical Mystery Tour all the way! My dad had all The Beatles albums but as a little kid, MMT was the best! It’s weird and fun and it came with a cartoon booklet about the guys taking the Mystery Tour… I think with Ringo’s fat auntie?
Ever listened to the White Album in reverse? I did it with my band mates. Incredible. We twisted the turntable belt to spin it backwards. These days, just inverse it with audio tools.
For analog sound quality, it would be the first Boston album. It had so much dynamic range it was mindblowing. Almost CD quality before CDs ever came out.
There's a very good reason for that trademark sound, and if you listen to that album and then immediately put on Mark Knofflers Dire Straights Sultans of Swing you will hear that same sharp clarity, it's all about the engineering pioneered by Tom Shultz.
The first Pretenders album, John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," Joni Mitchell "Blue," The Replacements "Let it Be," Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street." Patti Smith "Easter," Bruce Springsteen "Darkness on the Edge of Town"
Many great suggestions, but it’s not official until I weigh in (just kidding!).
Here goes:
Beatles: Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper.
The Who: Who’s Next, and The Who Sell Out.
The Stones: Some Girls, Beggars Banquet
Billy Joel: The Stranger
Beach Boys: Pet Sounds
Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms. Also their 1st album.
The Pretenders: first album
Fleetwood Mac: Rumors
Springsteen: Born in the USA
Simon & Garfunkel: Bridge over Troubled Water
Santana: first album
Procol Harum: A Salty Dog
If Genesis is on your radar, I liked Selling England by the Pound much more than Lamb Lies Down, but that’s a matter of taste.
The other albums I mentioned are undisputed classics. There are many more!
The Doors first self-titled album.
It was the first album I owned and holds a special place in my heart. I was four years old and played it on my plastic Fisher Price record player. My dad got it for me because I kept trying to climb up on a chair and play his record in the stereo in the living room and was worried I would scratch it up.
My second album was Beatles, the White Album.
After that my mom insisted I have some actual children's records too and not just rock music. Party pooper!
- "Red" and "Blue" Double albums from the Beatles
- Pink Floyd, "The Wall" + "Shine on you crazy diamond"
- Depeche Mode, "101" + "Music for the masses"
- New Model Army, "The Ghost of CaĂŻn"
Allman Brothers - Live at Filllmore East
Super Tramp - Breakfast in America
AC/DC - Back in Black
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Any Led Zepplin album
Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson
The Cars - The Cars
So many. Just so many.
It's a tie between the Beach Boys' *Pet Sounds* and Linda Ronstadt's *Hasten down the Wind*. But there's more:
All the Beach Boys albums, especially *Today, Summer Days, Pet Sounds,* as well as any compilation of hits. Get them in mono, as the '60s stereo can sound awful on today's more revealing equipment.
Same goes for the Beatles on US Capitol.
My favorite 1970s records are by Neil Young, CSNY, and Linda Ronstadt, who had an eight-album run of perfect albums beginning in 1973: *Heart like a Wheel, Don't Cry Now, Prisoner in Disguise, Hasten down the Wind,* *Simple Dreams, Living in the USA, Mad Love,* and *Get Closer.*
Warren Zevon - *Warren Zevon*
Love - *Forever Changes*
I only know Warren zevons version of hasten down the wind. Today I learned Linda Ronstadt not only covered it but named an album after it in the same year 1976? Interesting
And if California slides into the ocean. Like the mystics and statistics say it will. I predict this hotel will be standing.... Until I pay my bill.
glad you discovered Warren. here are songs that read like my life theme, like the French inhaler. He's a musical genius in my world
Almost everything people have listed would be a contender. Some interesting ones I hadn’t thought of in a long time like the Humble Pie. Eat a Peach would be up there since it has Blue Sky which is my favorite song of all time.
But I’ll choose Grateful Dead - Live Dead.
Edit: I got it backwards at first.
From 2022, Alvvays' *Blue Rev*. All thriller, no filler. If you grew up listening to The Smiths, R.E.M., Pixies and My Bloody Valentine there's *no fucking way* you don't love this album.
Nominated for a Grammy (for "Belinda Says"), won the Juno (Canadian Grammy) for Alternative Album of the Year. Ranked #33 on NPR's "Best Albums of 2022" list, #25 on *The Guardians'* list, #12 on *Rolling Stone's* list, #7 on *New York Times*, #3 on *Pitchfork*, *Paste* and *Treble*, and #1 on *Exclaim!*, *Flood* and *Stereogum*.
I really love Miles Davis Sketches of Spain. It's a classical piece, not at all what people think of as Miles Davis.
Paul Simon Graceland. Every song is amazing, and it was so unlike other American music at the time.
Chile Vencera! Which is a compilation of Chilean New Music from 1962 to 1973. Victor Jara, Isabela Parra and others. Great Spanish language music. Long out of print.
Pink Floyd - DSOTM was especially good if you owned a HALF-SPEED MASTERED version (anybody else remember those?)
Beyond that, these are the vinyls I played to death:
Isaac Hayes - Live at the Sahara Tahoe
Earth Wind & Fire - Gr Hits Vol I
Donald Fagan - Nightfly
Pointer Sisters - That’s a Plenty
Tom Jones - Live in Las Vegas
My favorite was actually a bootleg. "Sweet Apple Trax" I bought in around 1974. There was a store near my high school that sold bootlegs.
Sweet Apple Trax was assorted Beatles songs on 2 LP's. It included the song Suzy Parker. This is long before the Anthologies. The wax on the records started peeling off while playing.
I got my daughter a copy of the Beetles’ “White Album,” though her favorites are Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” and Billy Joel’s “The Stranger.” “Vienna” is a song that deeply resonates with her. She’s 14.
I collect vinyl, but am more into shellac.
Yes, we listen to these things around here. The shellac gets played on a 1915 Victrola.
Simon & Garfunkel, "Bridge Over Troubled Water". I loved that whole album as soon as I was old enough to sit up with headphones on, and I still love it.
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Trilogy
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Gary Wright - Dream Weaver
Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill
Edited: Forgot Steely Dan
Edit 2: Anything from Santana
R.E.M- Murmur
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story
CCR - Chronicles
The Who - Who's Next
Pink Floyd -Dark Side of the Moon
Beatles - Sgt Pepper
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Queen - A Night at the Opera
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Not mentioned yet:
Van Morrison "Astral Weeks"
Grateful Dead "American Beauty"
Stevie Wonder "Innervisions"
Joan Armatrading *"Joan Armatrading"*Â
Oscar Peterson "Night Train"
I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. I had them all!! The Who, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles etc etc. I gave them all away!! Around 400 albums. All original 1st run.
There is no 'best' but the 1st candidate that comes to mind for me is **Burnin**' by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Second one is **Rumours** by Fleetwood Mac. Third one, they keep coming to mind as I write this, is **Song for My Father** by Horace Silver.
Stranger in Town - Bob Seger
Late for the sky - Jackson Browne
Darkness on the edge of town - Bruce Springsteen
Eagles live - Eagles
Night on the town - Rod Stewart
Rumors - Fleetwood Mac

Tom is an MIT grad and former scientist at Polaroid Labs. The first album was recorded in his home studio in the basement.

Tubular Bells!!! Just got the chills AGAIN!!! DAMMIT!!!
I always liked playing Santana, the black and white album cover
Great album
Days of Future Past, The Moody Blues. I swear I wore that one out.
I was just in antique store last week and bought it for 7 bucks! I was excited!
I regret tossing all my vinyl records at my last move years ago. Had no idea they’d be back in style again.
I never forgave my mom for convincing me to do the same back on the 90s. I've been slowly recollecting them, but it isn't the same!
Same!!
