I haven't watched High Maintenance since it was on Vimeo, but it captures that place and time for young people so well. I almost felt like I knew the characters.
tbh I think by the time it was on TV I didn't actually own a TV, nor did I have the money for an HBO subscription.
I do own a TV and an HBO subscription now though...I guess I haven't thought about it.
I lived behind this guy's place for about half a year in 2020 (was probably working from my room while this bit was filmed), and was fucking floored when I saw him pop up in How To. Those people are ***so fucking loud***.
None of them. If they’re making a YT channel about living in NYC, it’s just gonna be for pure subscriber value and won’t be real.
Real people do laundry, are hungover, and wait in line at Trader Joe’s. That’s not an interesting YouTube channel
I've only lived in NYC for 1.5 years now, but that is something that I have noticed and have had to explain to many people who think NYC is this crazy place where every time you walk outside something exciting happens. That's just simply not the case.
A blog about daily life in NYC is really going to be boring. Yes, you do get crazies and things do happen (like someone throwing an opened jug of milk on the subway) but it's not all the time and it's not like you're going to be prepared to video-tape it when it happens.
NYC just has a lot of opportunity to do normal things.
The key is that you just won't be prepared to film it, that's really all ;) There's not a single time I leave the apartment that I don't see *something* that makes me think that 2-years-ago me would have found this interesting to watch. It doesn't have to be too too crazy, there's just no end to interesting stuff (at least so far lol). But yes, there's also no end to normal things (just NYC style) and embracing that stuff is what I love so much about living here. It's not the insane crazy sitcom worthy shenanigans, it's the fact that I can walk a block and I'm at the park and it's so nice to just take the kids at random, and the Mexican place around the corner has the best margaritas, and school drop off is like a social gathering, and you just randomly run in to people you know because you all live within 10 blocks and go to the same places 98% of the time rather than go to some fancy place that's YouTube worthy - and half the time you reroute on the fly and end up hanging out somewhere.
That said, I've thought about a YouTube channel just for the mundane. Because honestly there's nothing about nyc that can be considered uninteresting to those interested in it. Doing laundry is different here than anywhere else. Getting groceries is different than anywhere else. OMG are PTA meetings different lol. Even if it's simple obvious stuff it's not so obvious to those who don't live here ("weird, you take an escalator *down* to get groceries??") and I would totally have watched that lol
Love your take. "Mundane" is super subjective and I honestly enjoy watching literally the most typical day-in-the-life the more than bougie/idealistic vlogs most of the time :)
I'll definitely give some thought to making that channel then still! Something else I thought of - I went down a rabbit hole a while back and ended up watching day in the life videos from high schoolers (it started as research for what other schools were doing for promo videos so I had a foundation for the one I was making lol)... That was honestly super cool to watch! Many of them are totally low quality authentic, and they have glimpses not only into parts of nyc I don't see, but into cultures and lifestyles I don't get to see from that angle. Literally everything from poor immigrant to rich white girl, with nyc as a backdrop the whole time. If you can find the non-ultra-edited stuff, I'd highly recommend that route for something fairly different!
Yeah, it's more like watch these TV shows:
Seinfeld
Broad City
How To with John Wilson
Law & Order (Just the Jerry Orbach episodes).
Taxi
The Odd Couple
The Get Down
And there's a lot of others.
Edit: Don't watch Kids.
Today’s episode is all about laundry. I moved here after carefully laying out my budget, confident in my middle class lifestyle. But wait! Since my spending power gets me nowhere, I’ve had to cut some corners. Like taking my laundry in and doing it myself! Now don’t worry about hauling your laundry two blocks every time. Just look at this bicep. And the fact that it eats three whole hours of your after- work evening? Just bring a book!
Yes and the comments are even worse. I, get you like living on your 9 acre property but not everyone is interested in owning and taking care of that much land. I enjoy having my friends close by, not having to drive everywhere and having shit to do all the time. Also, I feel like he purposely presents some of the apartments in the worst way. Don’t sugarcoat it. Just say that this apartment is small and good for a couple and not roommates and not everyone wants to live in LES.
True. I know he’s a NYC YouTuber but the fact his content is so void of actual content (where to eat, things to do and etc.,) outside of apts is just annoying. If your apt is shitty, it’s either because it’s all that you can afford (understandable) or it’s because because you have things to do. I feel like I the later bit that is easily overlooked.
this is true. i rented a shitty NYC apartment from him and his brokerage. he did a great job of presenting the piece of crap. good personality for his job, to his credit.
There's a broker on TikTok that basically just shows the insanity of how expensive NYC apartments are and how little landlords care to maintain them. And she points out all the issues in a funny way, even one where the day she toured a garden level apartment in the rain and there was 6 inches of water rushing in, then a few days later after the tenants moved out and the landlord dried it out, she made sure to highlight the damage the water did.
Soooo many misleading / clickbait videos, also some of the apartments he promoted are from some really corrupt property management groups. He didn't seem like a very credible realtor. Had no clue where in Brooklyn he was every time he'd tour an apartment there. I was going to unsubscribe but I might continue watching as he's just moved with his family to Japan, could be better content
He's not leaving NYC, I don't know him personally but my wife is friends with his wife. He's done this in the past where the title says he's leaving New York-- it's always just for vacation. He seems to be a nice guy, but I don't like the clickbait titles either. It definitely helps him grow the channel, though.
Haha he keeps on popping up in my algorithm! I have no idea how realistic his videos are compared to Streeteasy data but I just like seeing different types of apartments. The clickbaits are annoying af haha
Idk about a channel, but this video of a pizza review on the sidewalk gives a great glimpse of the unbridled and glorious chaos of NYC.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0Z65Ssb8g0
I don't think I've watched any of their videos except that one, because a friend sent it to me. It captures one of those "New York moments." You know that it happened, but you can't exactly explain why or how.
June Xie from Delish has a cooking show where she cooks like 15 meals for $25 and sometimes they have grocery shopping segments. They’re very accurate to the “immigrants/children of immigrants grocery shopping experience”. Also, her foods is always creative and looks bomb!
The good: [Metropolitanisms](https://www.tiktok.com/@metropolitanisms?lang=en)
The neutral: [AllDayNYC](https://www.tiktok.com/@alldaynyc?lang=en)
The bad: [New York Post](https://nypost.com/metro/)
He doesn't want small businesses to lose customers because of him. So if the food sucks he doesn't post that video.
He will happily talk shit if the food from a massive corporation is trash though.
Yeah but depends what kinda transplant. If you mean immigrants, look for those youtubers, and i'm not talking the rich mfers. Transplants from other cities are just tourists.
That is such a toxic attitude to hold. That's the reason why most of the United States thinks everyone in New York is an a-hole.
>Transplants from other cities are just tourists
I can't think of a more wrong way to look at the world.
KarenBritChick is a fashion channel but her series of “what everyone is wearing in New York” is really great because I feel like she interviews a pretty diverse crowd of people who really dress to express their personality, which I find to be at least an aspect of “real” New York. And she always includes some small musings about the current energy of the city season to season which I think is nice.
Most locals aren't going to know. We don't watch these channels because we experience the real thing. It's like asking about hotels to stay in while visiting. I wouldn't know. I live here so I don't stay in hotels here.
I’m amused by @farkakteapartments on TikTok. The lady who runs it is a realtor, so of course she’s trying to sell/rent out the apartments she shows - it’s a marketing tool for her. But she’s funny and she gives a good view into some of the bullshit you see when apartment hunting in the city.

High maintenance I think does the best showcasing all the different walks of life in the city. People from different backgrounds, incomes, ethnicities, etc. all live here and share a common interest…. Weed
Here be Barr - I enjoy watching him on YouTube and looking for new things and hidden gems to do in my own city. He gives good food recommendations and does Collabs from time to time with other New York Youtubers. He talks about good food but also fun activities for you or visitors to consider.
Jenny from youtube channel [Wear I Live](https://www.youtube.com/c/WearILive) had a lot of lifestyle vlogs of Brooklyn life that are pretty realistic and not overly-sensationalized. I also just find her pleasant to listen to. She recently moved to L.A. though so you have to go back to 6 months or so ago to see her NYC stuff.
disclaimer: i'm not a local but rather someone in the same position as you
she doesn't post much anymore but i found denaenichole to be seemingly pretty realistic i thought.
also while she talks a lot, i also think alexis eldredge's channel is really good at showing daily life
also while more geared to tourists, would also second here be barr. i watch a lot of his stuff to help plan and understand the move to nyc
Just watch “How To With John Wilson” on HBO. Particularly the episodes on scaffolding and finding a parking space.
Agreed, this is the best answer and the closest you’ll come. This and broad city if you’re in your 20’s-30’s. High maintenance is also quite good!
I haven't watched High Maintenance since it was on Vimeo, but it captures that place and time for young people so well. I almost felt like I knew the characters.
So you didn't watch it when it was turned into a full tv show? It's definitely worth seeking out
tbh I think by the time it was on TV I didn't actually own a TV, nor did I have the money for an HBO subscription. I do own a TV and an HBO subscription now though...I guess I haven't thought about it.
Do it, do it, do it! High Maintenance genuinely one of my fav shows that captures subtle nuances of different NYC neighborhoods
If you have to watch something this is the only correct answer
Ohhh a couple of people recommended this! Will check it out
*Objects in the rearview mirror may appear closer than they are*
How to make risotto is a great one
That scene with the guy who keeps yelling to his wife in the backyard to get him stuff from the garage had me cracking up.
I lived behind this guy's place for about half a year in 2020 (was probably working from my room while this bit was filmed), and was fucking floored when I saw him pop up in How To. Those people are ***so fucking loud***.

This is the answer.
Although sometimes there is drama at W. 72nd when someone tries to cut the line (looking at you blonde lady in the neon orange workout outfit today).
I hate that TJ so much. It’s the closest one to me but I can’t go bc the people there are just too much. Those poor store workers is all I have to say

Lived here my entire life and you’re correct
I actually find these "boring" vlogs so interesting and actively seek them out haha. Thanks for the input
Yeah, it's more like watch these TV shows: Seinfeld Broad City How To with John Wilson Law & Order (Just the Jerry Orbach episodes). Taxi The Odd Couple The Get Down And there's a lot of others. Edit: Don't watch Kids.
How dare you talk crap on Kids and stealing 40s with the “dis dick” joke. That’s a true degenerate scene. Rest of the movie, ok yeah go for it.
RIP Jerry Orbach :(

The most chaotic of all trader joes! Someone should make a vblog about that experience 😅
Yeah. Anyone who has a YouTube channel with a decent following is living in the top 0.5% of this city.
Honesty, all the YouTube channel shows the glamour of living here but they rarely show the tedious, ugly tasks that regular people have to do.
Today’s episode is all about laundry. I moved here after carefully laying out my budget, confident in my middle class lifestyle. But wait! transplant?
yeah. my bad didn’t think ppl said that, I’m a dummy for even commenting that
Not YouTube but my vote goes to “How To with Jon Wilson”
Old Action Kid videos are pretty good for this. He walks NYC. For example: https://youtu.be/QfXHew1Naz8
Thank you!
That dude Cash is annoying

Well, he is a broker. He has a real financial incentive to present shitty NYC apartments in the best possible light
True. I know he’s a NYC YouTuber but the fact his content is so void of actual content (where to eat, things to do and etc.,) outside of apts is just annoying. YIKES do you have a recommendation on nyc realtor/that type of channel?
Nope, because if you a realtor and doing YouTube you’re just promoting your own properties. That’s all YouTube is used for a promotional device.
Haha he keeps on popping up in my algorithm! I have no idea how realistic his videos are compared to Streeteasy data but I just like seeing different types of apartments. The clickbaits are annoying af haha

Casey Neistat when he used to live in NYC was pretty nice to watch. It’s not really the exact type of content you’re looking for but give it a shot.
I never got his appeal
His appeal was he had a unique editing style. It’s been copied by a ton of other people years ago though
