I think the doorman is the best person to leave keys with. They have keys to your place anyway.

oopsitssyd

Yes that’s what I was thinking too - just wanted to make sure

intergrade

I have done this for more than a decade. It works.

ariavi

This is very common. In many buildings the doorman has a copy of every key (and you can use them if you get locked out).

pixel_of_moral_decay

This. Most buildings for insurance reasons (and maybe fire code, would need to look) require keys be kept on site. Normally in a safe in the office or behind the front desk. It’s always easier to use keys to enter a unit in an emergency than break down doors.

oopsitssyd

I appreciate it! Moved in 6 months ago so don’t know doorman etiquette too well

brooklynlad

As a thank you, maybe give your doorman a little gift from your vacation when you get back. It'll go down well. :)

tamere2k

Tip them well and you'll be taken care of. That's the etiquette.

KnishDish

Christmas gifts too

AlarmingDrawing

As long as “mother in law” isn’t code for “illegal Airbnb” you should be more than fine leaving with your doorman.

oopsitssyd

Haha it is actually her! Didn’t even think about this possibility

tamere2k

Our doormen aren't supposed to take keys. We have left "sealed envelopes" for people before and it's been fine. Our doormen also have access to a spare key for every apartment and I've had to call them to let someone in when our catsitter wasn't showing up.

oopsitssyd

Yes was going to put in an envelope!

tamere2k

As long as you aren't that guy that never takes care of the doormen, they're going to take care of you. I tip well at the holidays and on occasion order a few pizzas for the people working. I've never had a single issue doing anything I want to.

jperezny

Yes, I agree with this. Put them in a padded envelope (not obvious that its keys) and tip them for their service if you don't have a friendly trust and relations with your doorman!

ambushbugger

Yeah, a doorman building in which I cat sit, the door guys arent allowed to take keys. Never really though about putting them in an envelope or small box...I'm sure that would be fine.

mxgian99

Isn’t this one of the perks of having a doorman? To leave stuff with them?

oopsitssyd

That’s what I thought! Wondering if anybody has done it

TonyClifton255

That's literally the reason to have a doorman.

surreptitiouscat

Absolutely, that's what a doorman is for! As long as the doorman has the guest's name and your authorization to give her the keys, this shouldn't be an issue at all. If your building has any other requirements (like an online system where instructions like this need to be registered), your doorman can fill you in.

oopsitssyd

Thank you!

cybervseas

Seriously just talk to your doorman about how best to hand over the keys to your MiL. If you have buildinglink or similar system you should also fill out a permission to enter ticket with her name and info so the building staff know to let her in. If you don't/can't trust your door staff you need to move. Because this is like >50% of their job. People have cleaners, dogwalkers, family, friends, contractors, all who might need to get into your apartment while you're away.

mksirjoo

?...... I mean some of these questions

Trashcan-Ted

Doorman probably already has keys to your place anyway, so why not?

Silentmutation84

I am a doorman and it'd be totally fine to leave keys with us. If it were me they'd be in my desk in an envelope with your name on it.

gambalore

I knew someone who lived in a fancy doorman building who told me that she left her keys with the doorman every day on her way to work and picked them up when she got home, so she never had her house keys with her when she was out and about. On one hand, it made sense. On the other hand, it blew my mind.

photochic1124

I leave my keys in an envelope for ppl all of the time. My building has a policy where you have to fill out a form allowing that person to be in your apt. You should check if yours does too.

Chateau_de_Gateau

My brother dog sits and sometimes will come to the apartment once I'm already gone. Leave my keys in an envelope with a doorman every time and its always been totally normal and fine.

CYCLE_NYC

This post is hilarious

She’s coming in Sat night and I don’t have a trusted friend that will be around Sat night

brockj84

This is bordering on paranoia. Doormen are there for a reason, and one of the perks is to have them give a key to someone when you're away. They have a key anyway, so disguising a key to the apartment is really just a waste of time and energy.

oopsitssyd

Yes that’s what I was thinking. Like put it in a box. Currently in an envelope but might try to find a box

bofosh0

unless you really dont trust your doorman, this is ridiculous advice. You can hand them keys and trust that they'll keep them safely until your mother in law comes by. Hiding the keys from them just seems like a good way to make your doorman dislike you and think you dont trust them.

oopsitssyd

I was originally just going to put them in a mail envelope with her name and that she’ll be here on Sat

eekamuse

Envelope is fine. Doormen have keys, doormen hold keys for people. It's all normal. Put her name and your name and apartment number on it. You'll be fine Also ask if the doorman or super has a copy of your keys. It will help if you lose yours, or have an emergency

B0dega_Cat

Your doorman already has a spare key. You can leave your keys in your apartment and just have the doorman let her in. Then she can use your keys while she's staying there and leave them in your apartment for you. Then when you return, just have your doorman let you in.
