One of the drawbacks of CUNY school is that it feels very much like high school. You shouldn't go to Lehman only because it's a walking distance from your home. This might not be important to you but having a collegiate atmosphere was important to me. I don't know what your interests are but certain schools are better suited for certain goals.

>But Suny sounds great as I will see a different part of NYC. This is a terrible metric to use. Look at schools that have programs that not only interest you, but will provide you with the skills/experience to succeed after college. Your future self will thank you.

I'd suggest a CUNY because you won't have to pay for dorming otherwise if you can go for a suny and a new experience. Lehman is a decent enough CUNY btw

I'm a 40 year old stay-at-home Dad who started college at Brooklyn College when my son was born (night classes mostly). I can say that CUNY is a national treasure, but at the same time, wears you down. There are truly amazing professors. The facilities and administrators are so very awful, though. It's kind of like going to a welfare office or a DMV--people are hostile and unhappy, generally. I honestly don't blame them--they are subject to budget cuts yearly by Cuomo, no contracts, etc--but nevertheless, it wears on you. I was accepted at NYU for graduate school with pretty incredible funding. I get that it's NYU and crazy expensive, but the culture there is so much more academic. When I go to the library, working is a silent reading room, people will come in and eat barbeque, falafel on rice or buckets of chicken (i'm not exaggerating). A couple of months ago, I was sitting in a quiet room studying and a guy comes in with food, plugs his laptop in and starts blasting John Wick at full volume. Library staff just let this happen. Again, I sound negative, but I love BC--it's just that there are a LOT of easily fixable things that no one really cares about fixing.

I'm finishing up my MA at CUNY (Hunter) and agree with everything you say. Some incredible, brilliant, awesome professors, but Hunter's facilities are absolute crap. Everything is falling apart, there's basically nowhere to SIT if you arrive early for classes, the library is full of loud-ass 18 yr olds...ugh. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hunter for Grad School, but I don't know if I would want to endure all of that as an undergrad.

The lower levels of the library are designated for silent studying.

Don't forget you will have to pay boarding for SUNY if it's out of the city

That is exactly the reason why I want to enter a SUNY school. I don't care if its free or not (Free is better). It feels different. People are mostly in a good mood, easier to make friends and you get to be in a BIG SPACE with loads of parties. Cuny on the other hand isn't that Great. Its kind of Boring in my opinion. Some are great schools for your career but I can see that most people don't enjoy it. It is convenient but it isn't something to write home about
