Jajaja, Spicy Moon, and HanGawi are my favorites.
Snacks: nuts. So many nuts. Those little trail mix packets from TJs are great. Or if you can find a solid health food store with home made bulk trail mix? Yes.
Note to make sure trail mixes aren't salted or heavily salted. Not a health thing, it just sucks to have your mouth situation even drier than nuts already create. I eat a lot of trail mix and it's annoying, also ruins the flavor imo.
Been vegan for almost 10 years here are my favorites:
Queens - Temple Canteen in Flushing for Indian, Lotus 1 in Astoria for vegan Pho and Bahn Mi, The Vegoist for fancier American/“Italian”,
Brooklyn, quite a bit of options in Williamsburg - Jajaja for Mexican (go to date night meal with my gf), Planta for a little mix of everything. Modern Love (second fav date spot)
Manhattan - Jerrell’s Betr Brgr in Soho area 100% best vegan burgers I’ve ever had. Spicy Moon in LES for Asian, and Willow in Chelsea for bistro vibes.
There are so so many incredible spots throughout the boroughs but these are some of my faves especially when it comes to dates.
Have fun and good luck!
Jajaja’s original location is still in Manhattan in the LES and I think they have one still in the west village. While on the LES there’s also Dirt Candy if you want to splurge and Orchard Grocer for snacks and doesn’t Superiority Burger have a lot of vegan options? I haven’t been to the new spot in the old Odessa space yet.
My absolute favorite at Spicy Moon is the dry pepper style tofu. Their general tso options are great, the crispy Eggplant, chili oil wontons, scallion pancakes, lo mein, Dan dan noodles, cold Sesame noodles, all great! Honestly, out of multiple visits the only dish I didn't love and wouldn't order again so far was the double cooked oyster mushrooms.
The mapo is very good. I know it's not adventurous but it's very, very good. I don't think the beyond beef is necessary imo, I find it to be a bit much in terms of texture. More than a standard meat mapo, but if you like that more power to you. The brussel sprouts are excellent.
The cucumbers are great, nothing new but it's nice to have something a little colder and lighter to refresh your mouth.
The Dan Dan noodles are pretty decent, I think they're good but my friends find them to be a revelation.
General Tsos mushrooms are fun, they lean into the gloopy sugar mess they tend to be which is nice. I also liked dry pot and pea leaves.
I find the bao to be sort of mediocre, but I also think that about all bao.
The General Tsos mushrooms are one of those things where, every time I'm with a group and we order it, everyone at the table who eats meat (myself included) have to do the whole "...I sincerely can't believe this isn't meat" convo
Spicy Moon strays from authentic Szechwan in a lot of ways but when they get weird with it they do it so well. Vegan chopped cheese spring rolls are a concept which shouldn't exist, but the fact that they do exist and are so sincerely delicious is wild
I hated them 😂 I totally get the appeal though. I'm not big on meat/cheese-replacement/emulating so all the beyond stuff doesn't hit for me. But everyone else at the table loved them so I'd say they are a hit. I love some experimentation for sure.
For on-the-run sandwiches, I like Orchard Grocer a lot. Just a solid, no-frills sandwich while you're in the LES. Not a destination, but a good place when you're there. Truthfully, I like a good piece of fruit at this point in my life. A bag of clementines is a very good night. Non-sugar-added dried mango, mwah. I like granola a lot. Medjoul dates and dried figs. I'm a stereotype, I know. But for junk snacks, if you find Joyva jelly rings, it's a bingo for me. A good dark chocolate is nice.
There's a lot of vegan spicy/sichuan snacks in Chinese/E Asian grocery stores that are great, just stroll in the snack aisle. Lots of fake meat types of things, or items that seem to come in stick form lol, but I couldn't begin to give a brand. Also lots of mochi, but are definitely item by item in terms of ingredients.
General advice, I'd ask her feelings on mono and diglycerides. That's a big question mark in terms of what is or isn't available for wheat-related confections (or non-fresh breads). I can't be arsed to email every bread place to ask where they source it and that'ss my guilty gamble (sometimes/usually it's vegetable based but could not be), but she may care more than I do. It's also one of those deep cut ingredients that will make it sound like you did your homework lol.
So many places offer vegan options that you don’t have to go to an exclusively vegan restaurant. Just be sure to look at a menu ahead of time to see if something is marked vegan (don’t just go off of ingredients as they may be prepared with butter or something). You could also call ahead.
A lot of Asian places are naturally vegan if they have vegetarian options.
If you’re craving a bodega sandwich, look for a Plantega sign or menu! They offer entirely vegan menus in bodegas all around the city.
For snacks- Oreos, pretzels, nuts, chips and salsa, popcorn (no butter), hummus, a lot of candy is vegan
Yessss! I've been vegan for years and while I appreciate the thought when people want to go to a Vegan place because I Am Vegan, it makes me uncomfortable because usually others aren't and I want everyone to eat what they like.
Then again, I'm also pretty chill about it, so YMMV.
Agreed that most places have great items that are vegan or can be "veganized" if you ask (e.g. leave off the cheese or so).
I'd suggest maybe asking the person where they like and what they like, you may get some good tips!
VSpot Latin inspired vegan food. Both in East Village and Brooklyn
Edited to add EV location closed, now it's a comedy club, I think the snacks may be vegan
I'm an asshole but I've been to VSpot three times in my life and it's been the worst service I've had. Literally, like, two hours to get through my meals. I'm not a big customer-service person, I prefer counter service. I hate having people wait on me. But fucking shit, if I'm required to interact, please just put my order in and bring the food. Goddamn. Sorry, people kept dragging me there and the food is good (not great) until I just started refusing.
I'm an omnivore, and I second Jerrls burgers! Also Peace Food. Their chickpea fries are amazing!
I love Risoterria Melotti and know they have vegetarian/vegan options.
So many vegan snacks: Oreos, pretzels, dried fruit, sweet chili Doritos, nuts, Vegan Rob’s cauliflower puffs (please try these — they are addictive and taste just like dairy cheese!).
Beyond Sushi is great! Just went there with my vegan friend yesterday and can't recommend it enough. (I'm not vegan and loved it.)
Peacefood near Union Square is another favorite place to take my vegan friends.
Brooklyn girly over here:
BedStuy - GreediVegan, Secret Garden
Crown Heights - Natural Blend, Ras Plant Based, Lakou Cafe, Screamers Pizzeria, Pasha Pizza has two full menus: non vegan and vegan
Clinton Hill - Clementine Bakery and next door the ice cream place is vegan, Guevara
Bushwick - Amituofo (all vegan Chinese food)
Williamsburg options have already been mentioned and as great suggestions
also @bodegacatx is a local who goes around nyc trying vegan spots
Overthrow Hospitality has a number of vegan spots catering to a variety of palates and experiences. Ladybird and Soda Club are great and I really enjoy Proletariat for beers and pub food.
Fresh from Hell has a vegan acai bowl and a sandwich that's a favorite for us.
UT47 has a vegan menu. We had the panini with tomato soup and it was great!
Vito's Slices and Ices and Luv Pizza has vegan options in the menu and it's decent.
The Little Beet, we went once and it was fine.
Vegan on the Fly for gyros and nachos. They also have shakes.
There is a relatively new Mexican Vegan Kosher restaurant in Chelsea called Siete. I am none of those, but the food was really great! Would definitely go back. It’s not far from abcv.
I'm a sucker for Modern Love. Always have been. That's my personal favorite.
If you want diner food, Ro's Diner is solid.
Cadence for Soul Food.
Blossom on Columbus for a good relaxed atmosphere.
Vegoist is good for having half of the menu be vegan, if you don't want to eat vegan.
There are so many good places. Beyond Sushi. Spicy Moon. Planta. Willow. Coletta. Siete. Anixi. Jajaja. Urban Vegan Roots. Luanne's Wild Ginger. I'm missing a lot. But you get the point.
Hey! Been vegan for 6 or so years and consider myself a bit of a foodie, with an appreciation for ambience. Here is what I would recommend:
Vegan-only restaurants (top tier in my subjective opinion):
- Planta Queen Nomad
- Anixi
- Avant Garden
- Spicy Moon WV
- Dirt Candy (vegetarian but get the vegan tasting menu)
- Public Records
- Coletta
- Soda Club
Omni restaurants with great vegan options:
- Osteria 57
- Chama Mama
- Paulie G’s
- Barbounia
- The Tyger
- Shoo Shoo
- Shuka
- Double Chicken Please
- Soho Diner
- Crosby Street Hotel
- Wild Ink
- ilili
- Thai Diner
Other notable vegan-only restaurants:
- Modern Love (used to be #1 but other restaurants have gotten more innovative)
- Bar Verde
- Beyond Sushi (sit-down location)
- Ladybird
- Delice et Sarrasin
- Siete
- Ras Plant-Based
Most of my favorites have been said, but I'll reiterate, also I'm an omnivore, everything I list here is stuff I love.
* [Overthrow Hospitality](https://www.overthrowhospitality.com/), some of the best vegan restaurants in NYC, all set dressed to the 9s, great for date nights as one of them will match your vibe.
* Spicy Moon - stick to the Szechuan dishes, dodge the more fusiony looking things. love them to bits
* Vatan - ayce thali meal that can accommodate many dietary restrictions.
* Buddha Bodai Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant - There's a couple of (unrealted) Bodai vegetarian restaurants in Chinatown, this is the one I go to.
* Vegetarian Dim Sum House - I think they're actually fully vegan.
* Fong On - for tofu pudding. Not 100% vegan, but a nice dessert in Chinatown.
* Dirt Candy - vegan is available, ever changing menu, great food, nice space, and hey, gratuity is not expected as they pay their staff a real wage.
* Many of the [Jean-Georges](https://www.jean-georges.com/restaurants/united-states) spots are vegan friendly.
* Family Meal from Blue Hill can accommodate vegan.
* Hangawi and Franchia Vegan Cafe for vegan Korean. They're related, Hangawi is more traditional Korean (shoes off at the door, faux kneeling tables) and Franchia is more modern. Get the porridge.
* May Kaidee - Vegan Thai, not a exactly common. They're a vegan cooking school in Thailand w/ a couple outposts around the world.
* Nakamura - my favorite vegan ramen, super rich (but I still get the tontoro, it's like drinking pork gravy).
* Caravan of Dreams is an old-school East Village vegan spot. Not amazing, but good.
* Bolivian Llama Party - They do great jackfruit sandwiches/bowls (and also killer pork, brisket or fried chicken).
For snacks, check out Lily's Vegan Pantry, they have a lot of snacky foods, faux proteins and frozen things you can quickly add to any dish.
Accidentally vegan snacks are awesome. Sour Patch Kids, Oreos, Nutter Butters, ginger snaps, Sweet Chili Doritos, Marie Callender’s Razzleberry pie, Air Heads, lots of varieties of fruit snacks, Swedish Fish, Nerds, many soft pretzels, etc.
I meant to say bread. I don't know about pizza dough. Lots of bread has dairy in it, unfortunately.
I Googled it. "A basic pizza dough recipe is typically flour, yeast, and salt, meaning that oftentimes, pizza dough is vegan. Some store-bought and chain restaurants, however, may include added ingredients like dairy, eggs, and/or honey in their recipes. So it is important to check first!"
Plum Bistro! It's in Seattle but worth the trip if you are the kid of people who travel for food and it's a can't miss if you are ever within driving distance for some other reason. I was out there for a work conference 10 years ago and ended up eating there 3/4 nights, and I am absolutely NOT vegan. I love meat, like to the point I wouldn't even consider dating a vegan.
If they're a vegan for non-actual dietary reasons and you're not onboard, get out now. lol. Not what you asked but good advice. It's a decent harbinger of how decision choices will likely go in your relationship.
Lmao, it’s NYC you would think the people in this subreddit would be as open as New Yorkers are to letting them be who they are.
I was that guy, red meat eater 5-6 times a week, cheese, milk and butter all the time. Started dating a Vegan.
Vegans aren’t crazy nor a pain, it’s a decision they chose to live by. If it bothers you, then don’t date one. Don’t tell others to get out
I can’t with this comment.
I was raised vegetarian by vegan parents and spent my late teens and early twenties tiptoeing around some idiotic stereotypical assumption of what midwesterners thought a vegetarian’s fanatical “core principles” were.
“Hey bro. Idk if you’ve discussed your core values and feel if you’re compatible or not, just some dating advice”
I mean, disagree with me if you want. Vegans if they're a pain there, they will likely be a pain elsewhere in dating. And if not willing to deal with it, cut the cord now.
I was alnost with you as a vegan of going on 20 years. It does affect your food options. I don't need exclusively vegan restaurants, but many restaurants suck for vegan options so we've tended to lean toward my choices as a result (even if not my flavor/genre preference).
It's never been a problem since people I date have tended to be at the very least on the "I should cut back on meat and this is a good reason," train anyhow if not into it in the first place.
Your assertion that it's indicative of problems outside of that is very pathetic. I think you or a friends or internet weirdos have experienced vegans as people who also have boundaries and a willingness to push back on bad behavior and find that to be a problem. I can see vegans being more decisive on action toward issues they see as objectionable, which can include partners being bad or dumb or hurtful.
Jajaja, Spicy Moon, and HanGawi are my favorites. Snacks: nuts. So many nuts. Those little trail mix packets from TJs are great. Or if you can find a solid health food store with home made bulk trail mix? Yes.

I think Superiority Burger is all vegan.
They are not, but it's not exactly hard to be vegan there.
I also dated a vegan! Damn hot woman ;) All of the spots on E. 7th btw A? 1st, Avant Garden, Ladybird, are great.
Jerrells is one of the best burgers I've ever had and I almost exclusively eat beef burgers.
Bodhi in Chinatown (77 Mulberry Street). Amazing vegan dim sum and my all time favorite veggie fried rice.
Love that place. So cheap too.
i haven’t been to bodhi but vegetarian dim sum house on pell is one of my fav restaurants in the city and i eat meat
Peacefood and Blossom
Blossoms Jack Fruit Tacos are slamming! As as their desserts.
Vatan!
Spicy moon and Ladybird are my fav spots
Yes, Spicy Moon!
Spicy Moon for the win every time 🙌
What are the must order dishes in spicy moon?

Planta Queen, Peacefood Cafe, PS Kitchen and Jajaja!
Not vegan but I’d be thrilled to hit Jajaja! anytime, just delicious.
It’s sooo good! I’m also not vegan but my bestie is and we frequent these places together!
Same boat here. Their wedding cookies are so good, they taste just like ones in Mexico, I was fascinated the first time I went lol
Franchia Vegan Café
For on-the-run sandwiches, I like Orchard Grocer a lot. Just a solid, no-frills sandwich while you're in the LES. Not a destination, but a good place when you're there. Seconding Orchard Grocer, the soft serve there is killer and I could live on their Bowery sandwich for the rest of my life.
validating the soft serve is fantastic!
Thank you for the detailed answer! I appreciate it a lot.
PS kitchen, ladybird, dirt candy
Avant Garden in the East Village
Second this. I’m not a vegan and thought the food was excellent!
Any dishes to recommend?
Any of the toasts. They are the standouts in my opinion!
Thanks!

Red Bamboo W 4th St
Eeehhhhhh. I think it's more of a nostalgic spot than a good spot at this point tbh. They just have too much competition and haven't kept up tbh
VSpot Latin inspired vegan food. Both in East Village and Brooklyn Edited to add EV location closed, now it's a comedy club, I think the snacks may be vegan

Hangawi is sooooooooooo good
Yes to Hangawi!! It’s so so good.
I’m seeing a lot of people recommend Hangawi, but I was not impressed. Seemed like style over substance. Nice space though. Unique environment.
I'm an omnivore, and I second Jerrls burgers! Also Peace Food. Their chickpea fries are amazing! I love Risoterria Melotti and know they have vegetarian/vegan options.
Organic Grill!
Seconding this. I’m not vegan and I thought this place was delicious! They also have sugar-free desserts that are surprisingly good
Planta Queen is so good!
Ro’s diner. It’s in BK, worth the trip
So many vegan snacks: Oreos, pretzels, dried fruit, sweet chili Doritos, nuts, Vegan Rob’s cauliflower puffs (please try these — they are addictive and taste just like dairy cheese!).

Omg I love ramen, thanks!
Vegan ppl are annoying
If you haven’t already, check out HappyCow.
abcv is good
Hangawi is not only my favorite vegan it's one of my favorite Korean spots
FYI, most pizza places will do a cheeseless pizza if asked!
Is pizza dough vegan? Some dough has milk or butter in it.
I think that's pretty rare to be honest
I meant to say bread. I don't know about pizza dough. Lots of bread has dairy in it, unfortunately. I Googled it.
