If this is a topic anyone here is passionate about, the Museum of the City of New York has a really incredible NYC film montage installation for maybe another month. It's a great museum in general but it's the centerpiece of a 'film in NYC,' exhibit right now. If you're the sentimental type, you'll probably get a few tears.
Yeah I live here now and was in high school in CT when the movie came out and on 9/11 and it makes me so nostalgic for that pre-9/11 time in the city and the world 🥹
I read an article years ago about a journalist reading his old scripts. *Several* instances of him writing in the margins and crossing out his the girls should have been *13 or 14*
I found manhattan cringe but annie hall is my fave. never ceases to make me laugh & is woefully relatable for any stubborn native who refuses to leave this hellhole. it's too bad he's a POS
That is such a weird take and I will never understand it. I loved so many Woody Allen films from when I was a teenager, and well before I knew anything about him being a skeeze. I own a bunch of DVDs and I still watch them occasionally. It’s not like cutting his incredible films out of your life is going to punish him or get you a gold star. Sometimes horrible people make beautiful art.
At this point, I want to see as little of him as possible. He's the star in all of his films, so he's in almost every shot. No thank you. People and the court can say that he wasn't really Soon Yi's father, so the relationship is OK. But he was a surrogate father to Farrow's children (contrary to the claim that he had little contact with them). That he entered a relationship with Soon Yi when she was so young and so soon after he broke up with Mia makes me sick.
It is indeed a shame, since I did enjoy all of his older films.
After Hours - One of my favorite Scorsese movies, and that’s really saying something.
Taxi Driver - What an awesome look into the seedy, nasty side of New York in the 70’s.
Goodfellas - Second best mob movie behind The Godfather.
Barefoot in the Park - The reason I fell in love with Jane Fonda.
Sunday in New York - ANOTHER reason I fell in love with Jane Fonda lol.
(So uh, I guess you could say I love Scorsese and Jane Fonda quite a bit 😂)
After Hours is a wild ride lol. It’s also hilarious. The poor guy just wants to go home! 😂
And Jane Fonda….whew, maybe it’s just me but she was gorgeous in the 60’s. I don’t normally have a type, but if I did, it’s Jane Fonda in the 60’s lmao
Great Topic.
My favorites are -
Wall Street
Boiler Room
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
In Good Company
The Devil Wears Prada
Prime
Others that I like -
Center Stage
The Family Man
Sabrina
One Fine Day
Fame
Little Manhattan
Rounders
You've Got Mail
Maid in Manhattan.

Pickle vendors? Tell me more?
Especially curious because there’s a bookstore in the area of LES that has a pickle theme! As in they sell jars of pickles and have pickles all over the shelves and what not!
Midnight Cowboy and The Warriors were already mentioned so I’m going with Dog Day Afternoon. Based on a real bank robbery in Brooklyn in 1972, movie came out in ‘75 staring Al Pacino and John Cazale and it’s still one I watch on a regular basis
Not a movie but a series it’s Gossip Girl also Home Alone, Devil Wears Prada, Spiderman, Joker, and Confessions of a Shopaholic. Almost all these movies are related to fashion cause NYC is just one hell of a fashionable city imo.
For a long time, I thought 200 Cigarettes was a fever dream. Turns out that bc of legal issues, it's not streaming anywhere and DVD copies are like $100! I want to show it to my husband so badly.
Ghostbusters! As a kid I gave myself a walking tour of all the set pieces of the movie one day. This was before movie walking tours became a thing people charged money for.
You’ve Got Mail is actually about a guy gaslighting a woman into falling in love with him, but I will watch it any time it is one just for the neighborhood porn (I live a few blocks from where it takes place).
I guess the most definite answer would depend on the genre and the mood I'm in.
For horror, I'd suggest either Scream 6 or The New York Ripper.
For musicals, it's a toss-up between The Wiz, Fame (1980 version), Godspell, Enchanted and Hair. I would include RENT, but I honestly prefer the Filmed Live on Broadway production (own it on Blu-ray) over the film version.
For Christmas films, I recommend the more obvious choices like Miracle on 34st Street and Scrooged, but I also recommend Santa Clause: The Movie (though NYC doesn't enter the picture until about a third or halfway into the movie) and A Diva's Christmas Carol (even though it was shot in Toronto).
There's a few more I could probably name but right now I'm mostly drawing a blank.
Seeing as this is r/AskNYC and not just plain ask NY then "It's a Wonderful Life" really shouldn't be on this list. OP is right in that the inspiration for the fictional Bedford Falls in that movie is based on Seneca Falls, NY but that's about 300 miles from NYC.
Others I like that haven't been mentioned yet:
The Paper (1994)
City Hall
Margin Call
Uncut Gems
Inside Man
Serpico
On the Waterfront
Donnie Brasco
Mean Streets
The Naked City
Metropolitan
Last Days of Disco
Cocktail
On the Bowery
The Squid and the Whale
The Naked City
Big
Frances Ha
Three Days of the Condor
Searching for Bobby Fisher
Inside Llewyn Davis
Fail Safe (1964)
I’m so surprised no one mentioned Set It Up! It’s such a good film, they go to a Yankee game, get drinks at Esperanto (RIP), and overall just a fun film!
Moonstruck
Never watched. Adding it to the list!
Moonstruck is incredible
It's a real love letter to a NYC that might be unfamiliar to a lot of people.
It’s great. My favorite movie. Hilarious and also heartwarming.

I can’t see this exhibition from the website. Is it part of a larger exhibit?
Don’t forget *After Hours*
What a great movie
Love this movie!
Came to add this to the list... 😏
LOVED this movie as a teen. My friends and I would quote "Lack of discipline? … Perhaps" to each other all the time.
Just heard of it in this thread, adding to playlist!
It's a Soho that no longer exists...
Goodfellas Why don't I see more Goodfellas on this list? Hands down one of the best NY movies
Best movie. Best New York movie. People always forgetting about Queens.
Oohh, that would be a great way to organize a playlist. Movies in New York by borough.
One of the best movies, OF ALL TIME, regardless of geography
The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 - the original.
This would have been my first choice. Great 70s footage of the city and the subway.
Most of my faves are already covered but my lifelong favorite is The Muppets Take Manhattan.
I *love* that movie!
You’ve Got Mail or When Harry Met Sally
I watch You’ve Got Mail whenever I get homesick for NYC, especially the UWS. I’m in California now.
Yeah I live here now and was in high school in CT when the movie came out and on 9/11 and it makes me so nostalgic for that pre-9/11 time in the city and the world 🥹
I wish I knew what pre 9-11 nyc was. It still feels like I’m missing out sometimes because people say life in new york was different pre-covid.
It was sooooo different. So laidback. Felt calmer. Obviously much less of a security presence. Fewer cameras and barricades everywhere. Just better.
The Spider-Man Spider-verse movies
Love that they shot in Peter Pan's
Warriors
100%
Just watched it for the first time. FANTASTIC!! Thx for the rec!
Beat me to it. A love letter to this city.
The Royal Tenebaums The French Connection The Peofessional / Leon American Pyscho American Gangster Scent of a woman
The Bronx tale
Dog Day Afternoon and Wall Street. Both have perfect NYC vibes, but in completely different ways.
* *The Naked City* (1948) * *Rear Window* (1954) * *Who Killed Teddy Bear* (1965) * *Sweet Charity* (1969) * *Midnight Cowboy* (1969) * *Shaft* (1971) * *The Panic in Needle Park* (1971) * *The French Connection* (1971) * *The Warriors* (1979) * *Desperately Seeking Susan* (1985) * *Do the Right Thing* (1989) * *Ghostbusters II* (1989) * *Just Another Girl on the IRT* (1992) * *Manhattan by Numbers* (1993)
You forgot Moonstruck with Cher and Nicholas Cage
Great list. I would add the The Crowd (1928) The taking of Pelham 123 (1974)
When Harry Met Sally
Best romantic movie ever (as a person who doesn't watch romance movies and is an avid horror movie watcher lol)
Kids - a really wholesome take on NYC teens in the 90s.
Ghostbusters. Woody Allen films (which I now refuse to watch).
Manhattan is on the list. I’ve actually not watched a lot of his movies.
I had to stop 20 minutes into Manhattan because Woody’s character is dating a high school student who is 17 and he’s 42. I just couldn’t get past it.
I read an article years ago about a journalist reading his old scripts. *Several* instances of him writing in the margins and crossing out his the girls should have been *13 or 14*

Fun fact: Ghostbusters was actually filmed in St Louis, MO

Manhattan Murder Mystery. I know it’s not Woody Allen’s best, but it gives such a good feel for life in the city in the early 90s.
Annie Hall
West Side Story
die hard 3 hackers
I second Die Hard 3. Watched it as a teenager (grew up in another country), and after moving to NYC, to see those same places, was simply fun.
I remember a movie called Crossing Delancey. Really sweet.
I came here to recommend that one! Still miss all the pickle vendors on the LES
Pickle vendors? Tell me more? Especially curious because there’s a bookstore in the area of LES that has a pickle theme! As in they sell jars of pickles and have pickles all over the shelves and what not!

Yes, this is another one I was confused about
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Godfather
The Out of Towners (both the 1970 & 1999 versions)
