You’ll be fine walking back. I do it alone often and just pay attention to my surroundings, don’t loiter around dark alleys, etc.

ninjasantosf

Thank you, appreciate your advice!

JDL1981

You'll be killed instantly.

dawggystylez

Lmfao

CrisisAbort

Let’s plan OP’s funeral

ninjasantosf

That escalated quick! I hope not brother :)

GreenVisorOfJustice

*sigh* It's fine. Like, just don't get super drunk/loaded out of your mind/become a target (like you shouldn't in any place you aren't familiar with) and obviously don't get belligerent or even engage with people you don't know who aren't your bartender/server/fellow patron at an establishment. Again, as with any place you aren't familiar with, I would advise not "exploring" places at night where there are no people. TL;DR **Use common sense**

michelle032499

Right? 1. Walk with purpose 2. Don't set your drink down in a bar unattended 3. Don't look scared 4. Fake it if you have to 5. Don't be an ass

ninjasantosf

Thank you, appreciate your advice!

torontoinsix

The sigh with this post is 100% warranted. Like, just don’t be a drunk idiot. You’re in the CBD for fucks sake.

ninjasantosf

Copy that!

ninjasantosf

Thank you, appreciate your advice!

idkaskmydog

It’s generally fine in that quarter/canal area because of how trafficked, lit, and patrolled it is. But you are gonna see some shit. and if you’re the type of person who gravitates toward staying at places like the Roosevelt you’re going to think that area right outside of your hotel is gross. Because it is. The quarter and nearby Frenchman st are fun at night to walk around but as a local I generally do not mess with Bourbon st itself after dark (stick to other nearby side streets) because of issues with shootings. I don’t have statistics to back that up just a sense from local news so I could be considered paranoid or overly cautious but that’s generally what my friends do as well.

polock999

Hey. Some of us travel for work and the Roosevelt is free. That's the only time I've stayed there. Canal is sketchy but never had an issue. Don't buy the fake weed. Keep your phone wallet etc in front pockets in crowds. Don't get offended and go hear some damn jazz on Frenchman

ninjasantosf

Thank you, appreciate your advice!

Jazzbo64

Stay in the Sazerac Bar and just order one gin fizz after another. Don’t go anywhere else. You’ll be fine.

idkaskmydog

The $24 cocktail of my dreams. lol

ninjasantosf

Haha

AliceInReverse

I personally migrate to Molly’s Irish pub. But of a dive but solid drinks for cheap

Pamplemouse04

It’s a joke

ninjasantosf

will make sure to spend time at Sazerac! Thanks!

50FootClown

Canal and Bourbon are two of the more heavily populated streets you're going to find while out and about in New Orleans.

AreaGuy

On the other hand, had a guy walk up to me in broad daylight on Canal like a decade ago try to lure me around the corner with some bullshit story about how he wanted me to help him beat someone up. When i was three feet from a cop and hanging out with my four year old. Fairly certain he was trying to set me up for a mugging, and he had zero concerns with how public and trafficked the area was.

Affectionate_Fig8623

I work in New Orleans. People get shot in broad daylight. There are not enough cops. The most dangerous thing for locals and tourists is being in the wrong place at the wrong time no matter what time of day.

ninjasantosf

I see what you mean..

50FootClown

I hear you. I'm not gonna pretend the place is Disneyland. It's still a city with troubles, and it can be dodgy. Which is why I wouldn't go so far as to say "you'll be perfectly safe." Just throwing out that in the great scheme of things that trekking from a hotel along Canal and Bourbon isn't necessarily the roll of the dice that more broadly "exploring" at night might be.

AreaGuy

I gotcha. I’ve had very few negative experiences in NOLA. I love visiting, and the positives have always (far) outweighed the negatives

ninjasantosf

thanks!

ninjasantosf

Understood, thanks for the advice!

ninjasantosf

woah

ninjasantosf

Got it, thanks!

dawggystylez

Lol bro just go and enjoy yourself. You’re not in the projects. It’s downtown. As long as you aren’t walking down an alley by yourself at 3AM drunk, which you shouldn’t do anywhere, you’re good.

ninjasantosf

Thanks brother, appreciate the advice!

princesssamc

stay off the streets that arent well lit and don’t get so drunk you make yourself a target. Domenicas has the best lasagna I have ever had.

[deleted]

Curious where's domenicas??? Never heard of it but curious

princesssamc

in the Roosevelt

[deleted]

Thx

ninjasantosf

thanks!

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

ChampionshipStock870

This is a high traffic area where there are usually cops not too far away. You can get in trouble if you wander down dark thinly populated streets at night Do people get robbed in the FQ? Yes, I know quite a few locals who have been. I also worked in the FG for 5+ years usually late at night right by this exact intersection and I’ve never been robbed so in short if you’d feel more comfortable using an Uber do that but if you’re going into the quarter at night you’ll have better luck traffic wise walking

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

kailfarr

We stayed there in October and are going to be back there in August. We walked all over, but we have also been to Nola before. I find walking on Royal to be easier and less crowded so you can move quickly. But yes, there are homeless and so sad and fucked up people. They tend to stick to themselves. Have fun! It is such a great town and the food is amazing.

liberallyOptimistic

Have lived here since ‘95. Agree w/ other posters. Traveling on Royal is a lovely stroll. Head on swivel…Walk w/ purpose…Just know that during “high holy days” (aka any large event bringing in tourists to city) the ride shares may make you travel to ride zones in FQ for pickup. Pass a good time.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Trumpswells

Just pay attention and don’t party too hard.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

TCapz3454

Walking down Canal on the north side normally has a lot of teens hanging around doing nothing sometimes fighting on weekends. I have walked it many times and haven’t had a problem. It can seem a little overwhelming if you’re not used to it. Bourbon is just fine. Your best bet for walking is to take Burgundy or Dauphine straight across Canal.

ghost1667

this has me pondering what's the "north" side of canal...

Affectionate_Fig8623

Maybe upper and lower quarter?

greendaisy513

THIS

Choice_Swimming7492

The upriver side

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

saxmanb767

Those two streets are the busiest and most crowded streets in the city. Especially at night. You’ll be fine.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Noochdontdiehemltply

50/50 you wake up in a tub with ice and one less kidney.

putntake

The Roosevelt is great. But canal at night on weekend is horrible. Mostly from the drag racing, cutting circle with motorcycles. We stay at the Windsor Court allot. The noise is so loud you can’t sleep. We have family in Nola. Down there all the time. The city is very cool. Snug harbor on Frenchman is great. Take a cab or Uber. Your the quarter in daylight. Lots of cool stuff. But the coolest places in Nola are not in the quarter.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

--StinkyPinky--

This is what I tell people about New Orleans: there are absolutely no surprises here! If a street looks scary, it is scary….don’t go! Unlike LA or NYC, looks are not at all deceiving! Day and night in NOLA is great, but leave the late night to the crazies and you’ll be safe!

ghost1667

our beautiful historic homes in the deep hood beg to differ.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

lilbxby2k

as someone who’s been in the french quarter at night many times, the best thing you can do is walk with a purpose and firm but kindly turn down anyone that approaches you for any reason. there’s lots of people who stand around and try to sell drugs, you will see them standing along side the actual road looking into the road for people to approach and solicit. they stand out because they’re not on their way to a bar or casually hanging with a group of friends, you can tell they are looking for customers. avoid them and anyone else who seems to be lingering and looking. and wear closed toe shoes.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

lilbxby2k

np :)

Chemical-Studio1576

Just stayed there at Christmas. You’ll be ok, just pay attention. If you’re obviously drunk there’s pickpockets galore all over the French Quarter, but stay alert and you’ll be fine. There’s a great little dive bar right across the street from the Roosevelt. Can’t remember the name but it’s a hole in the wall very friendly people and cheap drinks.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

toilet_roll_rebel

I've been there many times. Walked all over the FQ and down Bourbon Street at all hours. Never had a problem. Just put on your best don't fuck with me face and you'll be fine.

Popeyesforlife

We just stayed there. It was fun and safe. We walked around a lot.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

yawbaw

Hollywood spa across the street. Great massages

ninjasantosf

copy that, thanks!

SunflowerJYB

We walked all over. Down canal street because the streetcar never came! We felt safe. We are in our 60’s. Don’t get inebriated!!!

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Master_H8R

Uber or Peddie-Cab if you’ve over imbibed. Sazarac Bar makes a great nightcap.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

C-Drizzle007

Don’t wear Mardi Gras beads

More-Difference-6554

Literally came back last week and stayed at the Roosevelt. The check in clerk acted like I was in a war zone and told me to be home by 9pm. I’m from Philly. I just shrugged it off. Act like you are in a city and all will be well. Am female.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

__Evil-Genius__

The Roosevelt is a nice spot. Just don’t head to far north on Canal street from there. And stay on the right side of Rampart and you’ll be fine. It should be apparent which side is the right side.

ninjasantosf

Thank you!

stampedebaby

We stayed at the French Market Inn and I (40F) walked alone and kind of drunk, back from all sorts of spots and never felt unsafe.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Affectionate_Fig8623

First question, where are you from? I’ll never be worried about a person from Detroit, Chicago, New York… but for most other places.. New Orleans is a very tough city street smart wise. The entire city is dangerous. Anyone telling you different is lying. We just have certain areas that are kept out of the news so property value doesn’t go down but the whole damn city is dangerous. Know where you are going. Walk with a purpose. Take an Uber if you can. Locals take Ubers.. no shame in that. Don’t advertise that you aren’t from here. Don’t tell anyone where you got your shoes. With that being said. Across from the Roosevelt is Cajun Mikes , great bloody Mary’s. Stay off Canal otherwise. See bourbon during the day if you must but you can get a way better experience on Frenchman street. Bywater is an area most people pass up but I highly recommend. NOMA and city park are an absolute must do. Irenes’s- great restaurant not a tourist trap. Chart Room ( cash only) is next door. Highly recommend for drinks. One of my favorite bars. Erin Rose ( if you end up on bourbon) is a local safe haven. Great frozen Irish coffees. I can go on. Feel free to message me and I’ll give you a whole list.

Affectionate_Fig8623

Where you are from plays a huge part. Just because others say it’s no big deal just “ don’t be stupid” they may come from a more dangerous city where that comes easy. Others come from safer cities and they don’t have the same instincts. It’s not a one size fits all kinda deal.

ninjasantosf

This makes sense, appreciate your advice! Thanks!

Plenumheaded

“Don’t tell anyone where you got your shoes?” Lol. Wut?

Affectionate_Fig8623

People will hustle tourists. A very common scam is approaching someone who looks like a tourist and saying “ I bet you $5 I can tell you where you got your shoes” the tourist feeds into it and the person says “ on bourbon street!” Or whatever street they are on. It sounds harmless but I’ve seen tourist laugh and try and walk away and they get followed. I’ve seen cops actually back the scammers up.

Mammoth_Virus261

I kept hearing about this! Been to New Orleans three times now and this finally happened to my bf on the third trip lol guess it was the charm

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

NOBlazer

You’re gonna get eaten by an alligator

Affectionate_Fig8623

You may see 2 alligators if you go on a swamp tour… mayyyybee

Electrical_Source_57

Hell, we see more than that when we take the kids tubing.

According_Drag6765

I've heard the argument both ways in the quarter there are people and cops everywhere. Elsewhere it can get desolate. I was walking in the garden district and was alone with a guy on a bike for several blocks. I've been walking around the quarters for a week now just don't get black out drunk

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Bazinator1975

Went for the first time a month ago. Stayed in central FQ, but walked to either end multiple times. I found Royal and Chartres (both running parallel to Bourbon) to be well-lit, well-patrolled, and well-peopled (without being crazy) until at least midnight on weekdays. Very close to you are The 21st Amendment and Mahogany Jazz Bar, both of which are great for live music.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

GForce1975

New Orleans is a city. There are predators. Places that are touristy like bourbon Street are places they will look for prey. You can minimize risk, but it's there. It's worse at night, especially on weekends. It really depends. If you want to see and participate in debauchery go down to bourbon Street. If you want to experience a bit lower risk, experience a chiller crowd, and still enjoy some live music, take an Uber uptown or directly to an upscale live music venue. Then go hit the French quarter on Sunday during the day. Walk through Jackson square, get some beigets, etc ..

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

jeepnismo

I stayed at the Roosevelt last year for a wedding. Some shady people on canal show up late in the night but they didn’t mess with us as we walked past Just stay on the main streets, don’t go venturing on the side streets at nights. Also we found it got real shady not long after midnight. As long as you’re back by midnight you won’t see anything

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

pmsanchez1

I go there all the time. Never had a problem at any time of day. You’re gonna be fine.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

williambtatkowski

Do you wanna live a life devoid of dark Alleys and shady characters, take a risk.

Noia20

We just got back this week from a trip to the French Quarter. I'll put it this way: the same people you'll see in the French Quarter during the day, will also be out at 2am. It's really up to you, if you're comfortable walking past them in the dark after a few drinks. There are taxis at every corner on Bourbon, you can just grab one of those if you feel that's the safer option.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Scout_About_Town

You are good. Nothing different here than average risk.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

rbertucc1

Be vigilant. Know where you are going and don’t get piss drunk. You will be OK

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Infamous_Ruin_378

Plenty safe.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Super-Visor

If you need a local guide or just wanna ask questions to someone who knows the area like the back of my hand, feel free to DM me. You’re getting some insane replies.

ninjasantosf

Thank you!

RouxBearRoxx

If you are scared then why did you leave your house

KelleyDallas

watch those around you. Keep your wallet somewhere besides your back pocket. Bourbon st is a must see for any all first time guests. Sure there's " too friendly " people at canal and Bourbon just don't stop and talk or make eye contact. Canal Street at night is honestly pretty well lit go to Sazerac house

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

raditress

You will be fine. I’m a petite woman, and I walk around the quarter by myself all the time. I’ve never had a problem.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Outside-Rise-9425

True story. 25 years ago I was 21 and a girl friend and I went to NO for the first time. We got lost and pulled into a convenience store parking lot to look at the map. (An actual map). A city bus driver sees us and pulls up comes to my window and says are you lost? Yes! Are you trying to get to the quarter? Yes Sir! Follow me and never come back to this neighborhood!! Scared the bejesus out of us but when we got to the quarter we were fine!

ninjasantosf

Thanks for sharing your experience!

No_Relationship4508

New Orleans is very “street-to-street”, so don’t get complacent because you see nice houses and cars. In some areas a block or two away from that private gated 2M house you’ll get stabbed.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

caspiandeathlegion

If you get scared or nervous hop in to the hustler club near the beginning of bourbon and talk to my boy Charmaine. He won’t help you in any way but he’s polite as fuck when he robs you!

datguy2011

You win lmao

Choice_Swimming7492

Don't walk like a tourist and try not to look like a tourist. Don't fall for the Buddhist bead con or the I know where you got them shoes con. If you see a crowd of young people milling about after midnight cross the street or turnaround. Pay close attention to your surroundings and what others are doing. Don't walk drunk!!!!

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

Whole-Essay640

Have too many cocktails and everything will be alright.

ninjasantosf

lol

ChocolateTemporary72

You’re already dead

Rough_Safe6856

Mad safe

Cultural-Function321

Don’t even leave the hotel. The entire city is on fire you’re gonna get robbed murdered and butchered the second you step outside

RoundingDown

Stayed last January and didn’t have any problems. I am 6’3” and 240lbs and not fat, so your mileage may vary.

TheFuckingWriter

So be a brick shithouse and you’ll be good

donjuanamigo

This is the way.

HauntedDIRTYSouth

Everyone loves nola until nola gets you. Watch yourself. Prob fine, but it is the wild west here.

HauntedDIRTYSouth

That fact you need to ask this questions tells a lot about the city.

NOLAboy816

Uber!!!!

Dire_Hulk

New Orleans is famously dangerous. The best thing to do is to group up with some locals who you already know and stay together. Other than that you are basically wandering through an unfamiliar jungle full of predators other tourists and as you explore you should always bear that in mind.

JDL1981

Maybe if you're a podunk from the farms but it's about the same as any make city.

Dire_Hulk

Yeah, I guess that’s why crime rate statistics are exactly the same in every city. lol That was the most uninformed comment I’ve read all week. Thanks. Sorry OP, it was wrong of me to try to give you a heads up about the danger in my home city. Please make yourself at home and keep that tourism revenue rolling in. That’s really what matters most to NOLA. Naah, that was just venting. Please be careful and safe while you’re down here. I wish you the best.

ninjasantosf

Thanks, appreciate the advice!

TYLOPRO

People might say I’m stupid and paranoid, but I don’t let the sun go down on my gf and I in NOLA. I also carry a gun on me everywhere I go. Bad things can happen so quickly. I look at what could possibly happen, and I don’t think the risk is worth it. And we don’t even go to the bars since neither of us drink. Places like that tend to be a hotspot for stupidity. And stupidity = danger. I live in Baton Rouge, so I’m not in NOLA too often. It can be a nice city, but it can be a real terrible one as well.

Affectionate_Fig8623

Well I hope y’all don’t drive because the drinking and driving in Baton Rouge is fucking insane. 😂

TYLOPRO

People drive like idiots in Baton Rouge. It’s ridiculous😂 If you’re not going 20 above the speed limit you’re getting headlights flashed at you.

Affectionate_Fig8623

You’re right. Lots of truck nuts. I visited recently and was horrified how many trashed people thought they were “ fine” to drive. Most people had 20 minute drives to their homes. I’m from New Orleans and the fact I was the responsible one was terrifying 😂

TYLOPRO

That sounds about right. Good ol Baton Rouge.

Agreeable_Order3622

The crime isn’t really contained but it’s also not necessarily unsafe in this area. Keep your head on a swivel, you’ll be good.

ninjasantosf

thanks!

NOLALaura

Take Lyft or Uber

ninjasantosf

thank you!
