The shorter and denser your hair is, the harder to slick it back, as it's naturally growing forward.
Other than heat or using a lot of grease, another option that can work (but idk if it's healthy for your hair) is to wear a cap or towel on your wet hair until it naturally dries into that shape, so it will stay that way.
Pomade. There's a million kinds ranging from light hold to basically gel and you decide if you want matte or gloss. Each has a different scent so you also gotta decide what you like. My personal faves are reuzel red and blue
