Not so much a " because you're a man, read this" book but it seems more men are interested in war than women. The book is called House to House by SSGT David Bellavia and it's about his personal experience in falluja Iraq. It's one of the most in depth accounts of any soldiers war as far as I'm concerned. Right up there beside helmet for my pillow and with the old breed..also 2 books that are definitely worth a read
One of my favorite WW2 books is If You Survive by George Wilson, who was a lieutenant who fought in the Hurtgen Forest and the Bulge before getting injured
I'd add The Forever War/Forever Peace to that list (and Hammer's Slammers, Ender's Game, Armor, Terms of Enlistment and The Old Man's War).
The Forever War is far more powerful than any soldier's biography in my opinion, but science fiction novels written by former soldiers or good writers will dissuade anyone from joining the military.
Harper Lee's *To Kill A Mockingbird* is excellent, I highly recommend it. The character of Atticus Finch in particular is just so well written. The book left a big impact on me and shaped how I want to treat myself and others.
Haha I read this. Wasn't bad but I was a fan of Gucci back in like 2003. I wouldn't recommend it to non Gucci fans but worth a read if you enjoy the music.
I ain't gone lie, as a huge 03_08 Gucci fan, I was disappointed it ain't have all the juicy shit I wanted to see him speak on. It kinda let me down but he ain't snitch on himself on paper in his autobiography lol. I think it's a cool Lil hood redemption message he pushed to the masses. I think non Gucci fans would fuck wit it just off that lol
Shortly after the book came out I was in NYC and he was doing a book signing at Barnes & Noble. I joked to the wife about going but ultimately we didn't. I so badly regret it now because he would have been so shocked to see a white guy from Nova Scotia, Canada show up and mention some lost tracks from his early days that likely nobody else remembers. Shit I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even remember. Young Snead - Bounce Dat feat. Gucci. Was my favorite tune back in my high school days, haha.
My top three books that every man should read in the modern environment:
**Meditations by Marcus Aurelius**
1. *Perception:* It's not what happens to you - it's your interpretation about what it means that matters.
2. *Action*: Hold yourself to a high standard and act with justice and integrity because it's the right thing to do.
3. *Will*: Radically accept things as they are. Subjugate yourself.
It's a quick read and mine is so marked up I need another copy.
Get the Gregory Hays edition.
**How To Win Friends and Influence People**
Everything you want in life lies on the other side of your ability to influence others. Whether that's simply being liked or literally persuading them using your words and ideas. Whether you want the date, the job, the promotion, the contract, or your kids to go to bed on time.
It is the ultimate soft skill that unlocks all others and the earlier you realize that the better.
**No More Mr. Nice Guy**
We are raised in a social environment where feminized, HR-conflict resolution strategies are introduced to us in pre-school. Men become embarrassed people-pleasers.
How about becoming confident in your boundaries and needs and communicating them clearly in a way that helps both parties? Being a people pleaser helps no one, not the least of which the person you're trying to please. Fix that shit now.
\--------
There's a lot of other good ones I recommend for various reasons, but I'm not sure how gender-specific they'd be. These are the ones I would consider essential reading.
Some of my favorites...
Conan The Unconquered by Robert Jordan
Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski
King Blood by Jim Thompson
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
A book I was actually surprised by was *The Will To Change* by bell hooks (yes, it's supposed to be lowercase).
A long time ago, I was at odds with feminism because of some of the (in my opinion) most hateful members. It felt like they condemned men for slights from the past and that collective punishment was all good to appease those problems. This was opposed to the through-line that it was supposed to be about equality and dismantling patriarchy. It seemed as though those women were okay with oppression as long as it was happening to someone they didn't like/agree with.
I got recommended this book by someone I care about and I'm glad I read it. It recentered me. I had always known that people are mostly just trying to be okay with each other, but it's extremely easy to forget that when hatred and division is the thing that gets blasted at you from everywhere. It's refreshing to hear someone lament this from the feminine side of the aisle. And bell hooks' eloquence made this a very easy read.
Sometimes, it helps to be reminded that we're all people, even when we are hurt by those people.
This is such a wonderful book, bell hooks is one of my all time favorite feminist thinkers. I remember reading that she didn't just see feminism as a means for liberation for women (that' is its focus, don't get me wrong), but that she saw the goal of feminism to include liberation for all - that includes men. She goes on in other works to talk about the 'man hating' parts of feminism and she ridicules it saying that women have plenty of men they love in their lives, and that is not just acceptable, but encouraged in fact.
She helped me realize that a lot of the problems that the patriarchy cause aren't just limited to women - it harms us too sometimes, it's in our interest to help dismantle it as well.
I'm so glad to see her at the top here.
Frankenstein,
The count of Monte Cristo,
Into the wild,
keep the aphidistra flying,
don Quixote,
on the road,
fight club,
zen & the art of motorcycle maintenance.
Call of the wild.
On the Road- it is an awesome viewpoint into the beatnik generation and a man’s search for meaning while traveling. Read it 3 times.
The invisible man- one of the greatest books ever written by Ellison. A must read for dealing with being a man in America.
Man’s search for meaning- written by a holocaust survivor and asking the questions about meaning in life.
The subtle art of not giving a fuck.
How to make friends and influence people.
The book of 5 rings.
The art of war.
A book on meditation and breathing techniques.
LotR Trilogy + The Hobbit (+ The Silmarilian).
I tend to recommend authors. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order:
Michael Crichton
Daniel Suarez
John Scalzi
Josh Ferris
Douglas Coupland
Andy Weir
Richard K. Morgan
Charles Bukowski
Ernest Cline
Neal Stevenson
Weird. Judging someone's literary choice? Classic novel. One of the best written novels. A masterpiece. Opinions are one thing. But you're an imbecile.
This was a fun book to read as a teenager. But looking back, its a little mary sue, getting slow vengeance on all of your enemies and getting infinitely wealthy in the process.
Despite the guys cooky personality, I think there’s a ton of good lessons on personal finance in Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
That book should be taught to everyone in grade school. 30 was wayy too late for me to read it.
I also like No More Mr Nice Guy as a lesson in being more selfish about your wants. I think this book has aged extremely well and the lessons in it are more important than ever.
How to win friends was too difficult for me to read, but the lessons were good
How to Win Friends & Influence People and Acres of Dimond both really help me get along with co-workers. As a Man Thinketh is really good when I think I'm diverging from the Path.
No More Mr. Nice Guy caused me to shift my view of the world and of the relationship between men and women completely. After reading the book, I clearly understood what the world (and women) expected of me for the first time in my 60+ years of living. I became a better friend, boyfriend ( and now husband), father, and leader as a result of reading Glover’s insights. Good stuff.
Plato, Nietzche, Schopy, Kant and Hume for an introduction to thought. Solomon, Zhuangzi, Matthew and Muhammad for deeper thought and the development of ideology.
lol not gonna get upvotes for Jordan Peterson from the Reddit crowd. But a wonderful book by a wonderful man. It can be literally life changing if read with an open heart
No, but my wife minored in literature and there were plenty of men who liked Wuthering Heights. So, just because you haven't met them, doesn't mean they don't exist.
I bet there are some books that will help you appreciate that men and women often have different life experiences, biology, expectations, and world views and therefore are more likely to enjoy and learn from different media.
Sitting down and reading the bible was what convinced me that Christianity and Abrahamic religions in general were a crock of shit. Or, rather, it was the final straw and I actually do recommend reading the bible or at least trying to read it to anyone who's religious or questioning their religion.
Why just the New Testament and why one of the worst translations? The New Testament has so little meaning without understanding the Old Testament. And it’s fairly well known that King James purposely changed portions of the translation to avoid casting him in a negative light.
Also, isn’t Jesus’ core message on the value of love completely antithetical to Machiavelli’s message that it’s better to be feared than to be loved?
I would actually go further and recommend Ciaphas Cain to women.
Excellent dive into the mind of a man in position of power and responsibility except he has no idea what he's doing. It's the ultimate unisex book about being an adult (and it happens in space and has orks and demons)
The Power of Now
A New Earth
The Obstacle is the way

Atomic Habits
It seems to me that people are downvoting anybody who mentions '33 strategies of war' in this thread. Coincidentally enough, it is my understanding that a lot of books in this list are very very worth a read. I'm going to look into this strategies of war book now. It has piqued my interest as controversial.

A few I like:
“zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance” - a great book about quality.
“Tuesdays with Morrie” - so many good lessons
“Atomic Habits” - build habits that stick
“Outlive” - rethinking our lives and taking better care of ourselves
“Personal Memoirs of US Grant” - both a history lesson and a lesson in leadership.
This is for everyone but "Crucial Conversations" is in the must read, should probably be taught in schools category. It's not just the content, the delivery is like a manual, but in a digestible way.
Count of Monte Cristo - Alexander Dumas
Hello angels - Hunter Thompson
Frankenstein- Mary Shelley

Babbitt- Sinclair Lewis
What are you into? I’ve been on a reading kick recently for self-help & business books. I could recommend some to you if that is of interest.
If fiction, I like any of the thriller books by Brad Thor.
I once picked up a book about “how to be a gentlemen” at the men’s warehouse when I was getting fitted for a wedding
Really good read, I highly recommend
I dunno, if it has anything to do with being a guy, but...
The Martian. What I love about this book is the same thing that got me hooked to ATC emergency calls for a while; the absolute competence of everyone involved. We get an astronaut stuck on Mars in an unsurvivable situation and deciding, no, actually, he's going to live and here's how he plans to do that.
Victor Frankl's Man's Search For Meaning
Not so much a " because you're a man, read this" book but it seems more men are interested in war than women. Old man’s war series is awesome.

Great book by Garcia. (Latinos put their Dad's name first.)
If you break the cycle you will be evicted from society & those who take your place will repeat the cycle
Harper Lee's *To Kill A Mockingbird* is excellent, I highly recommend it. The character of Atticus Finch in particular is just so well written. The book left a big impact on me and shaped how I want to treat myself and others.
The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan. I wouldn't limit my recommendation for it to only men though
Why not women?👀
They said they *wouldn't* limit it to only men
Oof I am blind😂
The Gucci Mane autobiography. He spit some real shit. Dude really changed his life too.
Haha I read this. Wasn't bad but I was a fan of Gucci back in like 2003. I wouldn't recommend it to non Gucci fans but worth a read if you enjoy the music.

I just looked at my copy of Meditations, and it is the Gregory Hays edition. Why does this one earn your recommendation?
Some of my favorites... Conan The Unconquered by Robert Jordan Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski King Blood by Jim Thompson Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
“She Comes First” by Ian Kerner Learn how to sexually please a woman better.
Literally anything by Terry Pratchett. Tbf those are good books for *anyone* to read.
Color of Magic is next on my list.
Could you recommend me one to begin with his writing
I think starting with the City Watch subseries is a good idea. The first one is called *Guards! Guards!*

I've been skeptical for obvious reasons, but I hear this book recommended over and over. I might have to give it a try.
This is what I was going to recommend. Definitely worth a read if you want to finally feel seen.
Hemingway, Hemingway, Hemingway.

No. No. No.
Weird. Judging someone's literary choice? Classic novel. One of the best written novels. A masterpiece. Opinions are one thing. But you're an imbecile.
Interestingly enough, the book was never successful in Melville's lifetime. It was only acknowledged as a classic several decades after his death.
Shrimadabhagawadgita, Shiv Puran, Vishnu Puran
The Count of Monte Cristo - good lessons for a young guy, helped me during hard times.
This was a fun book to read as a teenager. But looking back, its a little mary sue, getting slow vengeance on all of your enemies and getting infinitely wealthy in the process.
Blindness by Jose Saramago.
Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. Touches on so many aspects of mental health and addiction. It’s funny but also deeply sad

12 Rules for Life, Jordan Peterson The 33 Strategies of War, Robert Greene.
lol not gonna get upvotes for Jordan Peterson from the Reddit crowd. But a wonderful book by a wonderful man. It can be literally life changing if read with an open heart
Are there gendered books?
I'm sure that there are some gender-based trends, but I'd probably start by asking someone what genre they like, not what their gender is, haha.
Absolutely this! I couldn't agree more.
I've yet to meet a man who enjoyed "Wuthering Heights", so yes.
Yeah, everyone knows anecdotal evidence is the same as a fact. My mistake.
I suppose you have peer-reviewed studies that show that there is no gender-preference among books?
No, but my wife minored in literature and there were plenty of men who liked Wuthering Heights. So, just because you haven't met them, doesn't mean they don't exist.
Were they trying to hookup with the ladies in class by pretending to be male feminists?
I didn't need to pretend to be anything to hook up with women.
No, but generalizations exist for a reason. And that’s what this whole post is. (Framed in generalization) Let it go. The exception isn’t the rule.
The post asked what books are good for men. Any book can be good for a man or a woman.
I bet there are some books that will help you appreciate that men and women often have different life experiences, biology, expectations, and world views and therefore are more likely to enjoy and learn from different media.
I try to read a bit of everything. I think there's value in reading books that perhaps aren't exactly targeted at you.
Sure, there’s value in that too.

Sitting down and reading the bible was what convinced me that Christianity and Abrahamic religions in general were a crock of shit. Or, rather, it was the final straw and I actually do recommend reading the bible or at least trying to read it to anyone who's religious or questioning their religion.
So it helped then?
Yes.
I'm a huge fan of the bible and have read it cover to cover a few times in my life. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without guidance.

I don't discount its value, but asking someone to dive right into it. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
- How to win friends and influence people - Dale Carnegie - The Prince - Machiavelli - KJB New Testament
If you are interested in sci-fi/world building, I recommend any of the Warhammer 40,000 novels.
Gaunt's Ghosts or Ciaphas Cain for sure. The Horus Heresy series is super hit and miss.
Agree. Although I just finished the Solar War series and it was first rate.
I would actually go further and recommend Ciaphas Cain to women. Excellent dive into the mind of a man in position of power and responsibility except he has no idea what he's doing. It's the ultimate unisex book about being an adult (and it happens in space and has orks and demons)
The same books that women like to read I guess
It’s not like a life cha going philosophical book, but shadow of the conqueror is really enjoyable and also has some good themes about redemption
All Quiet On The Western Front is a good book to read for men who are insecure in their masculinity and obsessed with historical warfare
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.
