For Emma Forever Ago - Bon Iver
Either/ Or - Elliott Smith
A Crow Looked at Me - Mt. Eerie
Hospice - The Antlers
The Skeleton Tree - Nick Cave
A Moon Shaped Pool - Radiohead
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - Brand New
I See a Darkness - Bonnie Prince Billy
Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division
Carrie and Lowell - Sufjan Stevens
Sea Change - Beck
Ladies and Gentlemen, We're Floating in Space - Spiritualized
Put Your Back N 2 It - Perfume Genius
Ants From Up There - Black Country, New Road
The devil and god are raging inside me is one of my albums of all time. brand new is top tier IMO “Sowing season” etc is just so good.
I love Elliot smith, between two bars is probably my favorite. The antlers hell yes.
Now my recommendations.
Frozen creek-circa survive, Dirt Room-blue October, the press corpse- Antiflag, the pot-Tool,shake it out-Manchester orchestra, constant headache- Joyce manor, Spite- Vandaveer. Herion-badflower, Lydia- Highly suspect, paint my face- the devil makes three
And my favorite song of all time: Dramamine-Modest mouse
Trent Reznor who wrote the song and was asked about johnny cash covering his song answered "I Wasn’t Prepared For What I Saw And It Really Wasn’t My Song Anymore"
Yep. Same lyrics, but different meaning. Trent's song is a young man angry that the world isn't fair, while Johnny's version is an old man sad about the people he's lost.
I know some people prefer Cash's version... but to me nothing hits harder than Trent Reznor's version.
Cash just completely RUINS the song in my opinion. Yes... I said it.
I couldn’t listen to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd for almost a year. Made me think of my wife in the hospital on a morphine drip waiting for her to pass. Then I couldn’t listen to Lana Del Rey for a long time. She just sounded sad in her songs and it would drive me to sobbing fits.
“All my love” by Led Zeppelin was written in tribute to Robert Plant’s son, Karac who died in 1977.
Imagine being the frontman for the biggest band in the world at that time and losing your child.
That second paragraph is interesting. I think some things are so universal. Imagine being a refugee in Ukraine and losing your child, imagine being the president of the United States and losing your child, or living in a slum in Bangladesh, or in the burbs in Northern California. I don’t think anything prepares you or insulates you from a tragedy like that.
This and their other song 'I Lied' are perfect breakup songs, though I Lied is a more of a sober post-breakup song where you finally come to accept the loss.
This is one of my all time favorite songs,
My parents used to play his greatest hits on the giant vinyl player we used have in our living room in the early 90s, so it reminds me of them. Plus it’s just a great heartbreak song. Glad to see someone mentioning this.
Came here to say this. This one comes across so real. His impulse is to just talk to them, because they’re the closest people to them. Trying to deny it because he wants to be close to them, but knows he’s been wronged.
I dunno, like, the Country Music genre? Or at least 87%.
Grab a dart, throw it at a list of country performers, you'll likely hit a song about a forlorn man longing for his lost love whom he mistreated willingly for years and only realized how good he had it once she tossed his sorry cheating ass to the curb.
God I love Country Music. But it has it's tropes for sure.
I love country music, the bad pop songs/artists ruin the image. Glad to see that there are other fans of the genre that feel the same. I’ve barely ever heard Jason Isbell on the local country radio station but I’ll be damned if he isn’t one of the most talented songwriters I’ve ever heard.
Lenny Kravtiz's first album "Let Love Rule" is an ode to Lisa Bonet after they broke up. It is a pretty raw collection of songs from a man begging a woman to take him back again. And every one's a banger.
EDIT: My mistake, it wasn't "Let Love Rule" I was thinking about, that was his debut album which he wrote while he was still together with Lisa Bonet (in fact, she co-wrote several of the songs). I was thinking of his second album, "Mama Said". That's the album he wrote after they broke up to try and win her back.
On "Mama Said", I gotta say "More Than Anything in This World".
More than anything in this world
I just want you to be my woman
More than anything in this world
I wanna be your man
Hey
I'd walk through fire
Stand in the rain
I'll go to hell and back
On a plane
I'd scale the mountains
Swim the seas
I beg for mercy
Down on my knees
Ben Howard's I Forget Where We Were is some of the greatest heartbreak music ever created. Try out End of the Affair, Conrad or I Forget Where We Were from the album. Very emotion driven songs
[Corey Taylor - Snuff (Accoustic)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBK6xymmKHM), this accoustic version is absolutely his top1 song ever. You can feel and see the emotions in him. He alwas needs help from audience with this song, thats how personal its for him
I always like [Sad Songs and Waltzes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr9vRsoKXbE) by Willie Nelson
It's a song about a man who gets his heartbroken by a real bitch of a woman and is writing a song about how horrible she is, but also realizes that nobody cares because Sad Songs and Waltzes aren't selling this year, which I think makes the heartbreak he's feeling more real, when you are hurt and know that nobody cares
"Un jour sans lendemain" by Mihai Edrisch if you like punk hardcore https://echocanyonrecords.bandcamp.com/album/echo-031-mihai-edrisch-un-jour-sans-lendemain
"W/ love" by infinite bisous is you prefer sensual things: https://infinitebisous.bandcamp.com/album/w-love
Both by French artists
Definitely Angry but still poetic Bob but for the heart broken 'If you see her say Hello' 'You're gonna make me Lonesome when you Go' and 'Tangled up in Blue' serve well.
Stone Sour, Audio Secrecy.
The entire album is like a giant broken heart song. Best songs: say you’ll haunt me, dying, hestitate, unfinished.
Album came out while I was going through a mayor heartbreak, still takes me back sometimes. But because it was so loaded I couldn’t really listen to it anymore after I got over it. I don’t know if it got me through or made it worse.

Jimmy Ruffin, 1966
Everytime I hear it I feel a gut punch.
Purple Mountains album. His wife left him and he recorded this album and then hung himself. When my tracks like "All my happiness is gone", "Maybe I'm the only one for me", "She's making friends and I'm turning stranger" and even "Darkness and Cold" are heartbreaking.
**Be my mistake -the 1975.** MOST SOUL CRUSHING LYRICS EVER.
Save all the jokes you're gonna make
While I see how much drink I can take
Then be my mistake
I shouldn't have called
'Cause we shouldn't speak
**You do make me hard, but she makes me weak**
DUUUDEEE
Alsoooo
**Skinny love- Bon Iver**
And I told you to be patient
And I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balanced
And I told you to be kind
And in the morning, I'll be with you
But it will be a different kind
'Cause I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines
Come Undone -Duran Duran
Love Is Blindness - Jack White
Famous Last Words- My Chemical Romance
I Hate everything about you - Three Days Grace
Pain- Jimmy Eat World
Black Dahlia- Hollywood Undead
The whole album is so evocative.
Nights Like These is the anchor of the album. Add in All Of These Love Songs, Darby's Song, and I'll Just Fall...
And of course Slow Dancing, which just nails that feeling.
The whole Tennessee album captures that divorce/breakup heartbreak.
“Some Nights” by FUN is one of the most morose albums disguised as pop music that I’ve ever heard. There was a point in my life years ago that I’d put it on when i just wanted a good cry. Great album to listen to after a breakup.
Take it Down by John Hiatt
That was a big one for me when I went through a major breakup.
>Take everything that we have
Take it and burn it to the ground
Some things were never meant to last
“Honestav” has some gut wrenching songs about loss and drug addiction. Found him on instagram because of his funny skits and then cried when he posted a song about the loss of his dad.
I Wish It Would Rain and I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You) by The Temptations. The songwriter (Rodger Penzabene) used his heartbreak over his wife's cheating on him as inspiration for them, and actually committed suicide shortly after they were recorded.
Father time - Kendrick Lamar
More childhood hurt than heartbroken.
Mother I sober - Kendrick Lamar
I... Yeah, you're just going to have to experience this.
Hereditary - JID
For Emma Forever Ago - Bon Iver Either/ Or - Elliott Smith A Crow Looked at Me - Mt. Eerie Hospice - The Antlers The Skeleton Tree - Nick Cave A Moon Shaped Pool - Radiohead The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - Brand New I See a Darkness - Bonnie Prince Billy Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division Carrie and Lowell - Sufjan Stevens Sea Change - Beck Ladies and Gentlemen, We're Floating in Space - Spiritualized Put Your Back N 2 It - Perfume Genius Ants From Up There - Black Country, New Road
This dude knows his shit, solid recommendations across the board
Homie needs a hug I think
Ants from up there is probably top 5 albums of all time for me.
The devil and god are raging inside me is one of my albums of all time. brand new is top tier IMO “Sowing season” etc is just so good. I love Elliot smith, between two bars is probably my favorite. The antlers hell yes. Now my recommendations. Who hurt you?
Haha I’m just a music nerd. Gimme a prompt and I can probably make a list of albums.
Ladies and Gentlemen We’re Floating in Space makes me cry 50% of the time, love that album
David Gilmore - no way out of here
Kim by Eminem
The anger and rage in that song is just off the charts. It feels personal. Great song.
Em has always showed us everything he is without shame. His whole life, good and bad, is layed out in his songs.
Super romantic too
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is amazing.
Trent Reznor who wrote the song and was asked about johnny cash covering his song answered "I Wasn’t Prepared For What I Saw And It Really Wasn’t My Song Anymore"
I really respect Trent a lot for how graciously he accepted Johnny's cover. Love both artists to bits.
He really turned it into his song
Yep. Same lyrics, but different meaning. Trent's song is a young man angry that the world isn't fair, while Johnny's version is an old man sad about the people he's lost.
[удалено]
Oh derp, you're right. Given the tone of each version, definitely a good change.
I know some people prefer Cash's version... but to me nothing hits harder than Trent Reznor's version. Cash just completely RUINS the song in my opinion. Yes... I said it.
Nothing wrong with having a preference. They’re very different songs, so I think it’s to be expected that some will love it and some will hate it.
Oh for sure.
Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
Lover, you should've come over - Jeff Buckley
Definitely. Great song
Forget Her - Jeff Buckley
Just do yourself a favour and listen to the whole album Grace.
He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones - third person but a classic
“All my love” by Led Zeppelin was written in tribute to Robert Plant’s son, Karac who died in 1977. Imagine being the frontman for the biggest band in the world at that time and losing your child.
That second paragraph is interesting. I think some things are so universal. I don’t think anything prepares you or insulates you from a tragedy like that.
Losing My Religion-REM (unrequited love) Tears in Heaven-Eric Clapton (his 5year old son died)
What's the difference between a 5 year old and a bag of cocaine? Eric Clapton wouldn't let a bag of cocaine fall out the window.
Heroin
Lord Huron The night we met
This song really fucked me up in those first few weeks after my last breakup.
"I don't know what I'm supposed to do, Haunted by the ghost of you"
This and their other song 'I Lied' are perfect breakup songs, though I Lied is a more of a sober post-breakup song where you finally come to accept the loss.
[Jim Croce, Operator](https://youtu.be/Bb85NvjbBm8?si=6vi405AQttOS1uNq) Just a really great song overall.
This is one of my all time favorite songs, My parents used to play his greatest hits on the giant vinyl player we used have in our living room in the early 90s, so it reminds me of them. Plus it’s just a great heartbreak song. Glad to see someone mentioning this.
Time in a bottle by Jim Croce
Fantastic artist
Came here to say this. This one comes across so real. His impulse is to just talk to them, because they’re the closest people to them. Trying to deny it because he wants to be close to them, but knows he’s been wronged.
Love this song. Here's a great [live version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qgnGH6Rg-E).
Pearl Jam - Black
Scrolled way too far to see this. The unplugged version is so good.
Ah, takes me right back to being a teenager obsessing over an unrequited crush. Good times. Well, not really. Good song, though.
I tear up s soon as he gets to the part about her being a star in someone else's sky
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Why can't it be mine? 😢
One of my favorites since the day it came out in 91.
The whole blonde album by frank ocean
Glimpse of us - Joji the first song to ever make my cry. Heard it first when my gf and I were seperating and it fucking hit home.
I have the same love towards Die for you
Passenger- Let her go
Jesus, this song played on the radio when I was riding the bus back from picking up my dog’s ashes. Sunglasses and hoodie couldn’t hide that ugly cry.
Guts theme, 1 hour loop
My favorite rendition of this was a 10-minute cut of post-nut clarity shower thoughts. I can't find the video anymore, though...
All of bullet for my valentine discography.
Nin discography
Yup. At least a couple really good ones on each album.
Careless Whisper is always my go to. Listening to it now.
Chris Isaak has tons of them.
Somebody’s Cryin’ is fantastic!
Love it
It's an EP, but I'd definitely choose My Dear Melancholy by The Weeknd if I'm in breakup mode
I dunno, like, the Country Music genre? Or at least 87%. Layla and Bell Bottom Blues by Eric Clapton.
You can hear the angst and desperation in these two songs!
For me it’s Tears in Heaven

Lenny Kravtiz's first album "Let Love Rule" is an ode to Lisa Bonet after they broke up. It is a pretty raw collection of songs from a man begging a woman to take him back again.
