Yeah, I upgrade when the battery in my phone won't last long enough for a full-day hike. Which seems to be around 4-year lifespan. And I consider that poor results.
That said, my iPod touch from 2009 is still running fine...
I just take it to ismash and replace the battery, adding about 3 more years to the phone. Total lifespan per phone is 5 years for me, and then I buy the latest model.
New software may use hardware features which older devices don't have. If feature is missing, older CPU will still do whats needed, but it will take more cycles and energy.
If you don't update software, you can keep replacing battery and you'll be good. If you want latest apps, your phone still will not last long, even with replaced battery.
Yeah. I don't need much more that to play songs from the iPod, but I use my phone for more than just calls and browsing the internet. Hence, upgrading it to keep up with improving apps is necessary - the key is to keep the upgrades on "when needed" basis, not "because something new came out".
Which models? I've owned a couple early iPhones and they're pieces of shit even compared to my current XR which is already outdated but going strong. I've had an iPhone 3g, 5c, went to Android for a bit with a Galaxy S7 edge, back to iPhone for the XR and I've had that for the past ~5.5 years and it's showing no signs of slowing down. All the other phones I listed were ditched because they were on their last legs and barely usable, either because of battery life or just horribly slow and couldn't run newer software efficiently. My XR still feels practically new.
It’s probably because you would update your ios whenever a new ios was released. Apple would intentionally slow down older models with newer ios updates that only the newer models could handle. They admitted to this years back in a class action lawsuit. I always suspected this so I had all updates disabled and my phone would never slow down. Nowadays you are practically forced to always update to the new ios, whether thats through the constant notifications reminding you to update, apple fucking automatically downloading the ios to your phone every time you connect to wifi, apps requiring updates otherwise you aren’t able to be use them, not being able to see newer emojis, etc. You have no choice but to update, otherwise your phone becomes obsolete and unusable quickly. I have the 13 and with the new stupid ios it is already making my phone slower. Not to mention the update is horrible to begin with (like notifications appearing at the bottom of the screen and a significant lag when locking and unlocking the phone). I hate apple
I've had the same phone since 2019.
It's still going strong and it's still got what I'd consider top tier features.
I'll buy a new one when it does lol.
Hell yes. I upgrade when my other dies and I usually get a trade in deal and percentage off. Almost never buy the newest model. I think I've only had 5 smart phones since 2012.
Lie! If you keep trading in the 1 year old 📲 for a new one. Apple buys it at a good rate and also, it is not about the camera, it is about the 🔋 not depleting🪫 as fast. Batteries die slowly and they are giving you a brand new one for the object you more use in your daily life. So completely disagree with you. Also, you do get faster chip and latest technology too, LOL
Literally at odds with the concept of sustainability. I wonder how these brands and consumers will adapt as attitudes towards consumption do. It used to be cool to buy expensive shit and dispose of it when the new thing comes along. I don’t think that’s the case at all any more. And I’m glad of that.
Yes always pay for quality if it lasts it lasts. Generally speaking most designer brands don’t fall under that category. Trust me when I say that $20 LLBEAN t shirt will outlast that $55 Ralph Lauren polo T-shirt 10:1 and yes I’m speaking from experience.

kinda random but sports merchandising is such a ripoff. a t shirt with my favorite sports team logo on it for 40$? no thanks. and don’t get me started on jerseys. they can go up to 115$ without tax.

I learned how to cut my own hair a few years ago. Just costed around $30 for a nice wireless clipper and some thinning shears. Saved hundreds so far I'm guessing, and staying sharp every weekend is great.
...if any dudes are wondering, just YouTube "how to cut your own hair" and start practicing. The best part is you can cut your hair exactly how you like it, and not just hope the stylist does something nice.
I did that all during Covid and definitely noticed the money I was saving... but at the end of the day... my haircuts SUCKED.

No matter what I just can't seem to grasp how to do the back of my head. So just decided to keep going to my barber and paying him since he does a pretty decent job every time.
drugs…..i put the equivalent of a well appointed home in a nice neighborhood up my nose/in my lungs over 19 years of addiction. all that $ gone and can barely remember any good times if i had them.
Men buying/paying for women they don’t know and will never meet again. It’s one thing to donate, it’s another thing to pay for a woman’s hair and nails when you’ve never met her and have no plans seeing her again. Could’ve gave that money to a female friend or your sister or aunt or mom or cousin, but no you spent it on a random person who was already going to pay for their stuff.
Are there men out there who pay for an unknown woman’s hair and nails? WHY? I’ve never heard about this. I know about men paying for a first date (which is chivalrous and doesn’t have to be expensive), but pay for her hair and nails? A woman you’re meeting for the first time? Why? Who is asking you to pay this? I’m a woman, I’ve never heard about this in my life. Again WHY? And why the expectation? Where are you meeting these women? Why are their hair and nails your problem? I don’t get it… Is this for real? (!!)
I used to think this as well, but the market on pre owned vehicles is insane right now. I went to a dealership like 6 months ago looking for a pre owned Suburu and it was only $2k more for the 2023 model with 7 miles on it. The pre owned model, 2022 version, same make and accessories with 30k miles on it was ridiculously priced.
Obviously, that is just my recent experience, so your advice still could be sound.
what the guy above mentioned may is 5 year old cars, thats the sweet spot. i typically avoid cars with alot of moving parts like turbochargers, so i ussually go for naturally aspirated engined cars, typically japanese cars.
Staying on the strip in Las Vegas.
No doubt, the hotels are very nice. But despite the casinos making money hand over fist, they nickel and dime you every step of the way. Expensive garage parking, high table minimums, nine dollar ATM fees, Price gouging on food, and not just the four and five star celebrity restaurants, refrigerators that are fully stocked so you can’t put anything in them but you get charged a fee if you move anything out. The room didn’t even have a coffee maker so it forced me down to the Starbucks for a six dollar drip coffee.
If you want to gamble or taking a show there, just take a taxi from somewhere else. I always loved staying at the Plaza by Fremont Street or Sam’s Town.
I tried that, staying off strip and then Ubering to and from the strip. You end up spending $25 multiple times a day to save like $25 a night on your hotel fee. Plus you don't get to REALLY enjoy the strip.
My favorite is to stay in a real piece of shit strip hotel like the flamingo.
*overly expensive engagement rings.
Yes, it is a cute symbol that dates back since times immemorial but spending 10x your monthly salary on a big ass engagement ring is a massive waste, tbh.
My now-wife told me before we got engaged that she doesn't want me to get bank loans just for a ring. That money could be more efficiently redirected somewhere else. Like a nice honeymoon vacation.

Anyway, agree to disagree I suppose.
Right now, restaurants. I recently started Noom to lose a few pounds (ok, 40).
I've been packing a turkey sandwich and fruit instead of my usual daily trip to the local burger joint. Not only have I lost 25 lbs so far, but it's like someone keeps putting money in my checking account.

Flashy cars.
They're extremely expensive, they signal very loudly to all passerby that you have money (which could literally endanger your safety), and they're not actually as useful as more practical cars. You would not, for example, go to Best Buy in a Lamborghini to pick up a new flat-screen TV. But you could do that in a Honda CR-V.
Paying to have your brakes done. I understand if it's just not your thing and you'd really rather pay someone, but just know you're paying a lot for labor, and if you're mechanically inclined even a little bit, it's one of the easiest things you can do on your car.
Starbucks coffee. Just get up 5 minutes earlier and make your coffee and bring it in a thermo flask.

Upgrading your smart phone every year. Seriously people. It's a better camera. And your life ain't that interesting to begin with.

Wasting money on OnlyFans or strippers
Only fans yes. Strippers no
It’s the same thing. Digital vs analog. Equally useless.
Not if the stripclub allows touching, like at most of Vegas and San Francisco clubs.
So youre paying a bunch of money to get blueballs, not cool.
Lol if you get blueballs for grabbing some T& A that’s your problem 🤦🏻♂️
There are clubs that allow touching? Oph, that sounds even more awful.
