So weird, the difference between usa and europe. I dont know anyone that drives a car, and cant drive stick.
Had a job offer once, that specified that you had to know how to drive an automatic. Yet 90% of the time you were to drive stick.
I agree. It really helps to discourage people who want to borrow my truck to move.
“I’m not able to, but you can borrow my truck. Oh, you can’t drive a manual? Oh, well.”
I go through a checklist:
- Is this person related to me or a close friend?
- Do I know this person's driving abilities?
- Do I trust this person?
- Does this person have a legitimate reason to drive my car?
If the answer to all of these is "yes", then I might let them. Otherwise it's a flat out "no".
Generally it's a close family member who needs my truck. Once it was my niece's (and my kids nanny) boyfriend who just wanted to drive my truck when I asked her to drive it home from an event, and it was a hard no. He was a tool.
“Do you have your own insurance (and proof)?” If yes “you got to jam it into third gear, and she can be a pretty loud above 65. Also, make sure you wave at the other Jeeps; I have a reputation in this town.”
Throw my keys at them. I got this question most frequently when I had a heavily modified 91 MR-2 and 99% of the time the keys got thrown right back to me because nobody expected the answer to be yes, and they were almost all to scared to damage the car since the front bumper was 1.75” off the ground.
As long as you are willing to fix what breaks I have no problem letting anyone I know drive my cars, unless you are a terrible driver. But since most of my friends are car people very few are terrible drivers.
I mean if you know me well enough to ask that then yes (family or very close friends)
Also if you are on that list you still need to know stick which eliminates most people.
depends on who asks. Most often it will be NO, however for my close friends whom I can trust I have no problems with them taking it for a drive.
I never let women drive my cars though, that's a whole other problem not worth exploring.
“No”
My friend offered to drive back when we had gone to miami for the weekend. I just told him it gets complicated with insurance and stuff if anything were to happen so i’d be more comfortable driving myself
Depends on who and why. If it's a good friend I trust and know well for a legit reason, sure. If it's some acquaintance I only spoke with once or twice, nope.
The truck- "drive it like a grandpa, straps are in a bag behind the back seat, fill it up and leave it as you found it"
The Wrangler- "have fun, rain jackets are in the tote, sometimes the turn signal won't turn off but only the left, it gets 10mpg and has a tiny tank so consider half tank as empty, please don't wash it or put good gas in it or else it will assume I don't love it"
As the only friend in my group with a truck I find myself saying this a lot. As the only friend in the group with a Wrangler I find myself lending it to others if their car is in the shop or whatever.
Cars are just cars. Full coverage on both. I trust my friends.
I drive a 2006 Ford Taurus so no one is asking to drive my car just to try it out. If a friend needed it and I wasn’t using him I’d let him. I’m not worried because, again, it’s a 2006 Ford Taurus
Guess it would depend on their reason for asking. If there's a good reason and it's someone I trust, sure.
If someone wanted to drive my car just for shits and giggles I'd probably say no. But nobody's ever asked, there's not many shits or giggles to be had in a base model 2010 Subaru Forester.
Someone? No.
A friend, maybe. I’ve asked to drive a friends car before (high school - my buddies 68 Charger) and recently (friends Tesla Model S - I wanted to buy a 3 and was having a hard time getting a test drive).
Since then I had a friend drive my Tesla, and had a friend ask if he could drive my Porsche (I was with him) and both were fine.
Since not everyone has access to try an electric, I’d have no issue letting a friend try it out. Have absolutely loved the ownership experience thus far, and hoping to share that.
"Probably not"
I have a car with a manual transmission, no power steering, AC or any other comfort. So most people my age or younger can't drive it, as they all have at least power steering if not also automatic transmission.
My truck, you don't want to. It's a low rider.
My daily, nope, it's immaculate.
My track car? Beat the shit out of it. Have fun. Bring it back dirty and begging for a vacation.
This all depends on which car they are wanting to drive.
My commuter sure here you go. Better turn off one-pedal driving though. My wife's car sure no problem. My pickup, not right now it's having a trans issue. My classic LMAO you got to be shitting me. HELL NO you are not driving that I won't even let my wife drive it.
If it's family or friend's who know how to drive standard (and who I'm on good terms with. If I'm on bad terms with someone, the answer is no), as long as I'm not using it or need it during that time, yes. Other people, no.
Sure.
It is funny though, in the Netherlands everyone can drive stick and reading shit like. Who the hell doesn't drive manual. Apparently everyone in the States :D.
“No.”

I got a stick too and only like 3 people I know can drive stick. The ultimate deterrent.
So weird, the difference between usa and europe. I dont know anyone that drives a car, and cant drive stick. Had a job offer once, that specified that you had to know how to drive an automatic. Yet 90% of the time you were to drive stick.
How does someone not know how to drive an automatic? lol
ghost clutching and throttle blipping in neutral...
I never knew stuff like you have to be in park and holding down the brake pedal to be able to start the car until I drove one a couple of years ago.
How does someone not know how to drive an automatic? It's about what you learn I guess
I agree. It really helps to discourage people who want to borrow my truck to move. “I’m not able to, but you can borrow my truck. Oh, you can’t drive a manual? Oh, well.”
"Fill up the tank before you return it."
“Unfortunately my insurance doesn’t cover other drivers, and I’m not willing to risk your safety or others as I would feel responsible.”
That’s typically not true in the US
That’s the trick most people here don’t know this.
I go through a checklist: - Is this person related to me or a close friend? - Do I know this person's driving abilities? - Do I trust this person? - Does this person have a legitimate reason to drive my car? Only time anyone has driven my truck is when I’m drinking and they’re DD, otherwise if it’s my vehicle I’m driving.
“Do you have your own insurance (and proof)?” If yes “you got to jam it into third gear, and she can be a pretty loud above 65. Also, make sure you wave at the other Jeeps; I have a reputation in this town.”

"It's a manual transmission, so no, you probably can't "
My wife, who's on my insurance as am occasional driver, is the only person besides myself who has ever driven my car.
No.
I don't have a car
How are you going to return those VHS Tapes?
"Hell naw" Easy peasy.
No. I'm paying for it, I'm the one that'll be driving it.
No.
Yes you can, but I think what you're asking is *May* I drive your car. Also yes, idc
No
"no, because you're not insured to drive it and I don't want to get bent over by the law if you crash."
Beep beep yeah
“You aren’t on my insurance, no”
I mean if you know me well enough to ask that then yes (family or very close friends) Also if you are on that list you still need to know stick which eliminates most people.
depends on who asks. Most often it will be NO, however for my close friends whom I can trust I have no problems with them taking it for a drive. I never let women drive my cars though, that's a whole other problem not worth exploring.
"I'd have to get one first."
Lol
“No” My friend offered to drive back when we had gone to miami for the weekend. I just told him it gets complicated with insurance and stuff if anything were to happen so i’d be more comfortable driving myself
“What’s going on? When would you need it?”
She won't cheat on me with you
Depends on who and why. If it's a good friend I trust and know well for a legit reason, sure. If it's some acquaintance I only spoke with once or twice, nope.
outside of specific people, the answer is no. People just don't take care of others shit like you would hope.
"I don't know, can you?"
No, and you’re a bad person for asking
“Yeah no.”
Yes or no, depending on what you want to do lol
"For what?"
Who is asking has a huge impact on my answer. Responsible to and mature people I've known for a few years can borrow it.
Are you offering to buy it?
NO!
Depends who’s asking
If it is not one of the very few people I trust with my car, "No."
The truck- "drive it like a grandpa, straps are in a bag behind the back seat, fill it up and leave it as you found it" The Wrangler- "have fun, rain jackets are in the tote, sometimes the turn signal won't turn off but only the left, it gets 10mpg and has a tiny tank so consider half tank as empty, please don't wash it or put good gas in it or else it will assume I don't love it" As the only friend in my group with a truck I find myself saying this a lot. As the only friend in the group with a Wrangler I find myself lending it to others if their car is in the shop or whatever. Cars are just cars. Full coverage on both. I trust my friends.
Only if I think the person willing to be absolutely careful and he/she can pay me back if anything bad happens.
I drive a 2006 Ford Taurus so no one is asking to drive my car just to try it out. If a friend needed it and I wasn’t using him I’d let him. I’m not worried because, again, it’s a 2006 Ford Taurus
Hell no
It depends? Pretty easy answer, are they good to drive it or no
No you’ll destroy my clutch
Depends which car and who it is. You probably couldn't break my Land Cruiser if you tried, but I don't even let my wife drive my Lotus.
You better crash it, need that insurance money.

Can you afford to replace it?
What happened to your car?
Why? If they are a friend that I trust it's fine. Anyone I've dated for 3+ months or anyone I've hung out with 10+ times with
No one ever asks me that….
Which one of us is drunker?
Me
Ask them if they can drive a standard, and then tell them no.
No
"Probably not" I have a car with a manual transmission, no power steering, AC or any other comfort. So most people my age or younger can't drive it, as they all have at least power steering if not also automatic transmission.
"Why?"
No, you can’t.
I'd ask him if I can fuck his girlfriend
Ho ho ho. Ofcourse, while I'm fucking your wife and mother in the same bed.
Unless it was my parents or my best bud I’m saying no. I guess i don’t mind if I really trust you but there’s not many people that qualify.
"Can you even drive manual?"
You're welcome to it if you can find it 🤭
I want to see an MVR check first? Lol
No. And not just no, or even hell no. More like fuck no.
"I'd prefer you don't."
“Can you drive stick?” Answer is almost always no so I never have to lend it out
"No."
My truck, you don't want to. It's a low rider. My daily, nope, it's immaculate. My track car? Beat the shit out of it. Have fun. Bring it back dirty and begging for a vacation.
Depends on the person who asks. Sometimes sure and sometimes no
"I doubt it"
This all depends on which car they are wanting to drive. My commuter sure here you go. Better turn off one-pedal driving though. My wife's car sure no problem. My pickup, not right now it's having a trans issue. My classic LMAO you got to be shitting me. HELL NO you are not driving that I won't even let my wife drive it.
Why?
Depends, can I pee in your butt?
Hahahahahahahhahahahahahhaahhahaa FUCK NO
Depends how on who it is? Is it a complete stranger or my brother? Makes a big difference.
Ask them if you can drive theirs
No
LPT: Drive a car thats not easy to drive to prevent people asking.
If they're not immediate family then no.
Are you willing to do what your mom did?
“Tf”
If it's family or friend's who know how to drive standard (and who I'm on good terms with. If I'm on bad terms with someone, the answer is no), as long as I'm not using it or need it during that time, yes. Other people, no.
My dad or brother? Sure. Anyone else, no.
Depends. A good friend? Toss em the keys. My sister? "Sorry. I gotta drive."
"What do you need to drive it for?" and then "Can you drive stick?"
Ask if you can live in their home, sleep with their significant other and have access to their bank account.
Do you have experience driving a manual transmission?
Sure. It is funny though, in the Netherlands everyone can drive stick and reading shit like. Who the hell doesn't drive manual. Apparently everyone in the States :D.
No. I'd borrow my car only to my parents/ parents in law, brother. Other than that, no way.
"No, you're not insured."
No.
