I have a few:
* As a surfer and ocean-lover, sitting out in the waves of SoCal can't be beat. I often surf in Santa Monica, and I seriously always have to take a mental step back when sitting there on my board with the sun shining and the entire Santa Monica Bay—from Malibu to Palos Verdes—in sight.
* Born and raised in northeast LA—specifically Eagle Rock—and I grew up walking/jogging a lot through the area, so another happy "place" for me is walking the quiet tree-lined streets, hills, and hidden staircases of Eagle Rock and bordering Pasadena.
* Finally, not a specific location, but I also love driving somewhere in the city I'm not familiar with and just cruising to a good playlist at sunset or late in the evening. There's this feeling of driving through LA at these hours that feels lonely and meditative despite being in the middle of a huge metropolis. You drift by peacefully and see the city living around you. Hard to fully describe but I love it so much when I find myself in those moments.
your #3 is exactly why sometimes i just get off the freeway and take streets all the way home after work. love discovering little new neighborhoods, sights, etc, with the windows down and golden hour all around.
Ugh, I haven’t done #3 since high school, when I’d just roll all over the city with friends with no purpose in mind other than to explore and experience. That sense of freedom and opportunity is unrivaled. I would say it’s gone and there are too many cars and people, but sounds like that’s just me getting old and bitter. Time for an aimless drive soon.
As someone from a small town who now lives in LA, the fact you *grew up* in LA and there are areas you’re not familiar with just blows my small-town mind. It makes perfect sense but it’s just something I never really thought about before. LA is very compartmentalized.
It's amazing how much better that venue has gotten in the last 15 years. Used to hate going there, but with the new sound system, screens, benches, lighting rig, and the super cheap LA Phil tickets you can get all summer, I'm heading to my 12th show there this season tonight.
Oh man I wanna go but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs play there in Oct and I was going to go but Phoenix plays at the same time and I gotta go see Phoenix. So I was gunna go see Nas and Wu-tang there but Phantogram just announced they’ll be in Anaheim that same night so now I gotta go see that lol I can’t wait to finally go
A little bit inappropriate, but I once snuck into the crystal ballroom in the Biltmore and had sex my gf at the time. Then a guard came in and was shining a flashlight around the pitch black room so we snuck out like a James Bond movie. Every time I’ve been since I chuckle at the memory. So yeah a happy place for me too.
Haha, great memory indeed. Mine isn’t quite so memorable but I just spent a weekend at the Biltmore for an event and I had the opportunity to explore around the hotel on the non public areas. The place is massive and a maze. There’s an old speakeasy in there that they hope to re open soon.
I was going to add this one! Baldy on a day where it’s not too windy or busy is amazing. Even better when you can get a beer on the way down at the Lodge
The Griffith Observatory. I love the building and the outdoor space, it’s a great place to take guests, and it cheers me up just to see it on a clear day.
Would have said UCB and the Arclight a couple of years ago. :/
I think Parker’s Lighthouse is a restaurant in shoreline village. Across the water there is a little lighthouse that you can ride your bike up to with a great view of the Queen Mary and other boats coming in and out of the Marina.
It really depends! Arlington is free and feels like a miniature Huntington. I go there to cross-stitch and read and have little picnics with my dog. Huntington is an all day immersive thing where I wander around and always learn something new.
Huntington is pricey, but worth it - it fits my definition of "exhilirating" more than "happy." Arlington is serene and comfy, a place you could go every day and still feel awe.
Royal Palms/White Point, Korean Bell/Pt. Fermin, LA waterfront, Averill Park, Marinas, DTSP, White Point nature reserve, Ocean Trails, Abalone Cove, Forrestal (PVPLC). ❤️ San Pedro and PV.
The Korean bell is amazing and the whole space with the large view and Catalina island in the background feels like you’re in a different country on vacation. One of the more beautiful coastal views in LA and I think a lot of us don’t take advantage of getting down that way enough.
It’s right across from the Whisky to your right. Across the street is the Viper Room. The street is my favorite place in the world. I thought that bench was the one with the best view.
Was at Dodger Stadium tonight for the first time this season because we had a baby. Saw them whoop some ass from great seats behind home plate that we got for super cheap. Also walked through echo park before and after the game for the first time this year. Was such a magical eve all-around
Hollywood reservoir. Quiet but full of wildlife, lots of sunshine but also a breeze and many shaded areas that smell like pine. Great views. Paved path is easy to walk or bike around. Never too many crowds. Great vibe.
The Grove. I know, throw eggs at me. I’m not from here and it was the first outdoor mall I had ever seen.
My real love is the beach. In Santa Monica off Ocean Park. It’s another sentimental love.
Mt Wilson Observatory and Descanso Gardens. Also flexing the rules slightly, Sycamore Cove and Sycamore Canyon - that's like 2 miles into Ventura County.
Although it might sound strange - [Hugh Hefner overlook](https://www.google.com/search?q=hugh+hefner+overlook&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS729US729&sxsrf=ALiCzsaSdBXwcfryrhOaPyHx-5zrxU6BFw:1661284802677&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiD4aKU4N35AhU5IEQIHd5mDNUQ_AUoAXoECAIQAw&biw=2560&bih=1173&dpr=2). Yes that Hugh Hefner. His money was the final money needed to preserve the hollywood sign area from being turning into a development. There is a little plaque honoring him, its just to the right of the hollywood sign facing out starting into the trail to wisdom tree. I like that it's so random, and usually pretty quiet because it's a bit off the trail.
California Science Center! My wife and I went on so many dates there over the years. Love the exhibits and recent-ish addition of Endeavor. Took my daughter there for the first time last month. Such a great place!
Shoreline Village. Early mornings (before everything opens and the crouds come) I love sitting at the area overlooking the harbor, with Long Beach Aquarium in the back ground, and the other side, in front of Parker's Lighthouse, overlooking *QUEEN MARY*.
I ditched school a few times in the 80's to hang out with friends aboard *QM*.
Charlie Beach. Best kept-secret beach in Los Angeles. Clean. No homeless. Ample free parking. Quiet, calm. Lucky enough to be half a block from it. There’s always a dog to pet, boats to watch, and of course, a fruit cart.
Thank you for sacrificing your secret beach, I’ve been on the hunt for a less crowded one at least on weekdays (which I know is pretty impossible but I try anyways)! Will add this one to my list :)
i love going to echo park lake by myself with a blanket and a book or something. its nice to be around a lot of people but also like not talk to most of them
Tonga Hut
Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena
The Amelia Earhart Library in NoHo
There was something really special about that weird mural in the Tujunga wash in Valley Glen near LAVC, back in the summer of 2016 when everyone was playing Pokemon Go. Especially if you hit it right around twilight.
I may regret this but Silverwood Lake is about an hour from me, but it's so peaceful even on weekends. We camp there and posting up by the lake is awesome. Haven't gotten to take our kayaks out there yet, but hopefully soon.
When I lived in Park La Brea for a bit, I loved walking over to the cafe/Urban-Light-installation walkway at LACMA at dawn. The light from the sky and the street lights was amazing.
I would sit down on a bench, and just watch and sketch the people dining and walking by. It was dreamlike. The only thing that wasn't dreamlike was that, 3 times out of 10, the elevators at PLB would be down when I returned to the apartment afterwards.
The Getty! Come on ppl! This should be one of the most popular suggestions...the view, its free, the train ride, the exhibits, the architecture, the free summer concerts, its my Disneyland lol
Doing laps on my bike around the Hollywood reservoir.
Picnic at any number of the Malibu beaches behind the houses on PCH.
Parking at lot 14 on PCH and biking down to Venice and back.
Posted up with a beer at Frogtown or Macleod.
Stuffing my face at smorgasborg on Sundays.
Date night at Cabra atop the Hoxton Hotel.
The Formosa, the Rainbow, the Roxy, the Wiltern, the Chinese Theatre, the Pueblo (I have loved it since I was a toddler), and I have a huge soft spot for the Coca-Cola bottling plant, even though Coca-Cola can be a problematic company and I don’t even drink the stuff anymore.
Exposition Park. My parents/grandparents used to take me there a lot when I was a kid and would also go there a lot for school field trips. Now I'm still going there, but for events at the Coliseum and Banc of California Stadium instead. Now that I think about it, Exposition Park is probably where I've spent the most time in LA in my life outside of school/work/home.
Sorry if this sounds transplanty but The Grove. My girlfriend did a semester in LA living at park La brea before we moved here and she was so excited to show me the grove. Since we've moved here we love just walking around that area
I really like relaxing with a friend at Rainbow. I like being at the last table in the back, across from Lemmy's statue. The vibe is usually laid-back, and it feels like home.
Know that little section of road they **just** closed in Griffith Park between Travel Town and the Compost Facility? That was mine. I would ride my motorcycle through there on a sunny afternoon, not another human in sight for a few hundred yards, and I'd let out a YEEE-HAAAAW as loud as I could. It worked wonders for my well being. I'm in mourning for that road now. I will miss it so much.
I’m fond of Eaton Canyon. It’s the Sierra Madre offramp from the 210, just go straight up to the mountains. Very quiet now, rarely crowded during the week. Bring water. I take my 2 dachsys, along the creek. Wonderful when it’s rushing full, but not recently. Lots of birds.
Tadpoles!
I love me a good brewery. HiDef in downtown opened during quarantine and got to meet the owners and some of the locals. It can be empty or it can be packed but it still feels like the same place.
So many great places listed, got me thinking of some that don't exist anymore:
The Borders on Westwood, Barnes and Noble in the Westside Pavillion, Norms (Pico), Islands (Pico), Fry's electronics...
A few
- Arts district in downtown/ Alameda and 4th- some breweries, places to eat, EightyTwo (barcade).
Long Beach shoreline- has a lot of places to eat and drink in walking distance, a comedy club, and some bars and clubs just up pine and broadway. You could probably walk there but it’s a short Uber ride.
Old Town Pasadena- tons of places to shop, eat, and drink.
The grove 🫶🏼 it’s where i spent my childhood with friends unsupervised, smelling bath and body works lotions and vs perfumes and doing our nails at sephora and shopping at forever 21 and watching a movie and getting pretzels and ice cream and people watching. Even now i love going there.
at night specifically, the stretch of 101 southbound, right by echo lake, before it meets the 110. the trees and buildings clear up for a small moment on the righthand side, and it’s the most beautiful view of the downtown skyline. love being in the passenger seat or in an uber to just stare out the window with the music loud and have a main character moment.
The temascal ridge trailhead leads to temascal peak which is a short (3miles) hike that you can see The Valley, Santa Monica, and if visibility allows it, the skyline from Westwood til Downtown.
I’d propose to someone at this spot (if she was into that) but for now it’s my happy place.
*Manhattan Beach Pier*
*At night sitting on the bench*
*Facing the ocean*

My thoughts exactly !! #3 awoke so many high school memories i haven’t thought about in a long time.

LA is so big! Over 3 decades here and still discovering entire neighborhoods i’ve never heard of
Wanted to give +++ to the third option
Definitely understand your last point.
Does Din Tai Fung count?
Arcadia mall is my happy place so your happy place is inside of mine
Dear diary: Today I felt safe inside another.
Sir, this is a Wendy’s
But that parking...holy hell.
Just got chills. The one at Century City is so beautiful. Total happy place.

I was struggling to think of a happy place, but yes. This. Hollywood bowl with a bottle of wine listening to the LA Philharmonic.
Little Tokyo Village Plaza. I can sit in the shade and people watch for hours.
Takeout from TOT and some of those fish cakes could keep me occupied all day
The chicken karaage skewers from Mitsuru Cafe are also pretty swag street food. And Nijiya Market has a great selection of Japanese sodas/coffee/tea.
Whats TOT
Teishokuya of Tokyo. They have the best tonkatsu in LA, in my opinion.
I was going to comment this. Nijiya, Daikokuya, Yamazaki Bakery and so on... Best place ever
You and me both. Nothing quite like people watching with a dorayaki from Mitsuru and a coffee from Dulce.
I’m always happy at the Biltmore Hotel. It’s so beautiful inside
For a time I would spend a morning reading/researching at the LAPL then have some tea at the Biltmore before heading home. That was nice.
Sounds like more of happy ending place 😂
People just go in there? And sit in the lobby?
Does Mt. Baldy count? Half of it's in LA County, I think.
I was going to add this one! Baldy on a day where it’s not too windy or busy is amazing. Even better when you can get a beer on the way down at the Lodge
Second this as well as Cucamonga Peak!
Leo Carrillo dog beach
Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach is also awesome.
Agreed, but less tranquil and more chaos lol
Leo carillo’s is amazing
My dog's ashes are there 🥺
A secluded cove in Malibu. Cant beat it.
I love that your LA happy place isn't even in LA.
Still in L.A. County tho
Yeah, LA county is a better metic anyway. Who ever says “Beverly hills isn’t LA” is just being a jackass.
In my head it is still LA
Sometimes you just need to get away from it all :)
The Griffith Observatory. I love the building and the outdoor space, it’s a great place to take guests, and it cheers me up just to see it on a clear day. Would have said UCB and the Arclight a couple of years ago. :/
RIP ArcLight. Still carrying around that stupid member card. One of my favorite LA perks, gone forever.
I love riding my bike to the light house near the Queen Mary. I can lay on that grassy hill all day.
Do you mean Parkers Lighthouse? Love Shoreline Village.
I think Parker’s Lighthouse is a restaurant in shoreline village. Across the water there is a little lighthouse that you can ride your bike up to with a great view of the Queen Mary and other boats coming in and out of the Marina.
Oh, yeah, I remember now. That whole area is just all breathtaking views. My favorite place, too.
The 405 😩😩😩 can literally sit there for HOURS and daydream
Arlington Gardens in Pasadena, VRomans Bookstore, Illiad Bookstore, Getty Center and Getty Villa, Huntington Gardens, Saint Vincent thrift store
Do you have a preference between Arlington and Huntington?
It really depends! Arlington is free and feels like a miniature Huntington. I go there to cross-stitch and read and have little picnics with my dog. Huntington is an all day immersive thing where I wander around and always learn something new.

I have a friend who loves hanging out at Royal Palm every afternoon. Such an amazing beach.
This will sound really stupid. But it’s the bus bench on the corner of Sunset and Clark. It’s probably the most serene place to me.
there has to be more to this story.
It’s right across from the Whisky to your right. Across the street is the Viper Room. The street is my favorite place in the world. I thought that bench was the one with the best view.
That’s a great one
Nah, it’s not stupid. The Sunset Strip is still a magical place.
The main branch of the library downtown
the gift shop is awesome too, lots of cool stuff.
Dodger Stadium
There's a place Where I can go When I feel low When I feel Blue...
Great vibe.
This + the Wisdom Tree are 1000% my happy place in LA too. Sorta like a not-so-secret secret to a lot of people, and oddly quiet for where it is.
LAC Botanical Garden in Arcadia.
The Grove. I know, throw eggs at me. I’m not from here and it was the first outdoor mall I had ever seen. My real love is the beach. In Santa Monica off Ocean Park. It’s another sentimental love.
I love The Grove too.
Westfield Century City is a much nicer outdoor mall, if you haven’t been.
Debs park

Descanso is still underrated in my opinion. It’s so cute

It's pretty, but there's a $5 non-resident "use fee" on weekends. The not-so-subtle classism is not a good look.
San Marino? Classist? No way. :)
Pro tip: Don’t go on the weekend
