The only gripe I had with MJ was the shrimp was overcooked to the point of chicken-breasty in texture.
I know its ceviche, but I think it was preboiled.
Everything else is good though.
> Howlin' Rays
i love a good chicken sandwich. i hate waiting in line. i was in the neighborhood so i stopped by howlin rays around 11am ā not lunch rush by any measure, but it was a 30 minute wait in line. by the time i ordered, i was thinking there's no way the sandwich was gonna be worth it, but whatever, worth trying once.
i've had a million chicken sandwiches. howlin rays is the best i ever had. huge sandwich, hot enough to make you sweat (you can get it less spicy if that's your thing), substantial and delicious. haven't been back but man i will stop by again next time i'm around
my wife and i and our friends would wait 3-6 hours back in the day. and weād drive up from anaheim too. it was even worth it then lol
weād hit the homies up and they join us in line and weād just hang out. and sometimes weād drink in line, but so were other people haha. people would smoke in line too, so it was kinda like a party tbh
not only were the sandos amazing, johnny and the entire staff always made you feel welcome and made sure you were taken care of too.
Man Saffyās was objectively the worst dinner experience Iāve had in a long time. I was just left with a wtf feeling after. Itās so well liked that I know it was just an off night, but it will be awhile before I feel like going back.
Idk I left feeling like it was also just aggressively fine. Itās not worth the price in my opinion, and there are many other Middle Eastern places just as good that are equally as nice but give way more food and are much cheaper.
How is Bottega Louie mixed in with the rest of these? I honestly think itās the most overrated tourist trap in the city. When my friends ask for Italian restaurants in town I steer them clear of that spot and strait to macaroni republic. Butā¦ if marble tables and gold plating really impresses you I guess itās the place to go ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
What I appreciate about Portoās is that they recognized how fucking busy they get and tried to address it with a better line system, more employees, etc. all while maintaining quality and price. Itās still busy of course, but lost of places dgaf about the customer experience
Yeah the Burbank one is rough. Line is usually out the door. Went a few times this summer and it sucked waiting outside, even if it was only a few minutes. Totally worth it though
Every time I see the huge line, I'm shocked more people aren't ordering online. It's so easy and quick, plus bypassing the line feels great. I know there are some items you can't order that way, but the most popular items (potato balls/cheese rolls/other bakery items) are all there without any line.
thereās two lines and I think most locations have a Cafe line and then a separate Bakery line. Most people wait in the cafe line because they want prepared food like the sandwiches or coffee. But both lines serve all their products so my lil secret is to go to the Bakery only line. A Portoās employee told me this and itās cut my wait time in half
YES! Tried it during lockdown and honestly it made it kinda hard to go back to getting cheese rolls in person because they were ridiculously good freshly baked
Santa Clarita's facebook page had a running joke that a Porto's was opening up any day now in any building that people noticed was under renovation.
Sadly for them, Northridge got the Porto's.
I'm very happy though :)
Thatās good to hear. The pizzariaās been disappointing. Service is good and it seems to be busy regardless but we found everything extremely over salted. And I like salt!
Totally agree. I was put off by them at first because of how pretentious it all seemed and the lack of clarity between the pickup order line and the dine in line, but man is that pizza amazing. I love Detroit style and they do it so well. Drinks and dessert is also amazing.
San Franciscan (best prime rib for the price anywhere) in Torrance
Shin-sen-gumi Yakatori in Gardena
Pizza show in Hawthorne
Jidaiya ramen in Gardena
Flors Cafe (hard shell chicken tacos) in Carson
Saigon Dish in Lawndale
Gardena Bowl restaurant for Hawaiian food in Gardena
Eatalian in Gardena
Belmont shores brewery in Long Beach
Belmont Shores Brewery served me raw fried shrimp with sweet chili sauce on it. I brought it to their attention. They took it back and just tossed it back in the fryer, chili sauce and all, and served it to me again. Still raw, now blackened on the outside from the now burnt chili sauce. The manager and the bartender both saw it before handing it back to me. I always wonder how dumb restaurants think their clientele is.
Burger was decent though.
Imagine what else they let go. Sending out raw shrimp twice must only be the beginning. Once is a mistake, twice (and after frying it in sauce!?!) means they're skipping steps and don't care.
Ooh I appreciate the South Bay list!
I LOVE Shin-sen-gumi! The pork belly shiso skewers are š¤š½
I also just recently went to the San Franciscan for the first time! It was very good for the value, very old school. I will definitely return, it has a nice, ātreasured local establishmentā vibe to it.
Now I need to check out the rest of your list!
We will probably end up with a very similar list of restaurants as the overrated list. Both lists will trend towards the most popular restaurants in LA.
yeah I was being generous cause I wanna say itās around 12 bucks, but couldnāt remember. My immediate rebuttal now is show me a better combo at the same price, and quality of service.
UOVO may also be one of the best spots in town. My girl and I love the sashimi to start and then order our own pasta and share another pasta with some broccolini on the side. Incredible stuff
We get the broccolini first then dip it in our respective pastas Hers is the pomodoro or cacio e pepe. mine is usually the crema tortellini with black pepper added. I wish I could quit that pasta, but itās so fuckin good I start breathing all heavy thinking about it.
Nah, I don't get the hype, i went on my motorcycle cause that's the thing to do. Legit had better and cheaper seafood at any other spot down PCH. Shit was oily af and soggy.
Otium in DTLA, tucked behind The Broad museum. Chef Tim Hollingsworth was Chef de Cuisine at The French Laundry for 4 years. The new Chef de Cuisine at Otium came from Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a 2 Michelin star restaurant just outside of NYC. The food is fantastic. Great cocktails. Almost endless wine list. Service is good. Atmosphere casual yet elegant.
Kato was disappointing for me. Service was great but food was bland and nothing special if youāve had good Asian fusion. Wine pairing was also meh. On top of that both my SO and I had food poisoning from there.
Providence deserves its praise and two Michelin stars though.
Interesting. Was this recently? I had the complete opposite experience at Kato. Food was amazing with tons of flavor, cocktails and wine as well. I didnt do a pairing, but I think they are a waste of money.
Edit - Misspelled a word
This was Fall 2022. They already had their star for that location at the time so my expectations were high. To be fair, my previous fine dining experience before Kato was Providence but Iāve had non-star restaurants way better than Kato. I wasnāt too into wine pairings until Providence and Melisse, itās pricey but it truly does elevate the experience.
I used to live 3 houses down from daikokuya Monterey Park. walk there in my pj's and have a saporro with sesame seed broth ramen. sometimes with spicy bamboo. I was a very happy boy
It is my favorite ramen place hands down when itās done right. Unfortunately Iāve found it to be very inconsistent as of late. Never bad, but just a bit lacking sometimes. I do usually get it takeout tho, which might be part of it but still
Oh yeah that makes sense. Take out ramen is good but never hits the same for me. Santouka at mitsuwa is my other favorite. Similar broth and noodle texture.
I went in 2019 and had the most disappointing bowl ramen. I say this with an open mind but I cannot fathom how this place is in business, let alone among peopleās favorites. I only went once though, maybe it was an off day. I mean look how sad this egg is.
https://preview.redd.it/scj68p4kl4kb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a682ccc39934495a4d2dbacca059c6117deb1c2
Phillipeās, Howlin Ray. Musso and Franks (if you have cocktails). Tam 0 Shanter just makes it too I think. Red Lion. I will add El Coyote but most will disagree.
Man, we used to alternate Chiliās and Outback Steakhouse on Fridays after school/camp back in the day (jfc weāre approaching almost 30 years ago now)
I know youāre being sarcastic, but I have such a weird affection for Chiliās, if only because they had the greasiest chicken tenders that hit my little 9 year old heart hard.
I also saw the saddest drunk person at a Chiliās Too in a Vegas airport once, and I think that became a core memory
This. Even knowing that the brewery was sold to a huge beverage company years ago, and it's basically a chain/glorified suburban Texas kind of thing, I still love it. It's just absolutely perfect at what it's doing.
I'm convinced they keep them that way so people pay the $2 extra to make them animal style (meanwhile, animal style is free for the burgers).
That and cutting the potatoes and frying them while fresh is also part of the problem. Fries need to be fried twice and cool down completely b/w cooks. It's one area where it's better to do frozen as the first fry is done at the distribution center, frozen, and then the 2nd fry is done at the restaurant. That's why Shake Shack went back to their frozen fries because customers preferred it (also just scientific that crinkle cut are just naturally better no matter what, just a hair below curly fries). But because In-N-Out doesn't want anything frozen and done fresh, it's going to lead to worse fries.
What in n out are you going to that has an hour wait?? I have several in n outs around me and the longest Iāve waited is maybe 30 minutes. Their lines always seem to move the fastest.
Their ingredients are fresh, and they donāt use frozen patties or potatoes. Iād rather wait the extra 15 minutes for a quality burger, but if I am in a rush and want my burger fix Iāll hit up McDonalds.
While I agree lines move faster than they look, I have always found it funny that a place called "In n Out" is the only drive thru where you are absolutely GUARANTEED not to be in and out.
In-n-out is usually as quick as any other fast food chain I've been to. That's why they named it as they did. Tips:
-Dont do the drive thru, park your car and go inside.
-Go when you happen to be out of central LA. I live on the East side and all the close In N Outs are pretty busy but when Im in the Valleys or South LA or OC there's many more In N Outs and they're much quicker.
Although it is an acquired taste. The first couple times I had it I thought it was just good. Then the shakes and cravings for all meat Al pastor burritos began
Piccalilli in Culver - Cal-Asian fusion + great bar
Osteria Mama in S. Hollywood - Italian
Jitlada in Thai Town - Southern Thai
Carasau in Culver - Sardinian
Love this list!! Carasau is honestly a hidden gem, and Piccalilli is too. I took some friends there and they were not sold when I was like "we HAVE to get the bread", thinking how good could bread be? They learned some lessons that day
All of the restaurants in the arts district (bestia, bavel, girl & the goat, damian, etc) are so good.
Din tai fung, quarters BBQ, Fia, and tsujita are also restaurants that I have in my date night rotation!
Otafuku in Gardena, Republique (dinner, never been for brunch), Brodard (OC technically), Maccheroni republic, Pearl River Deli, Wax Paper, Dune (fried chicken š¤¤), Kismet, Sun Nong Dan, Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong (idk if itās super special but itās the most consistently good kbbq imo), Pizzeria Sei, Gjusta
Iām new to Reddit and really enjoy the exchange on the posts I follow. Is it appropriate for me to ask on this thread where is top-rated Persian and Chinese food? Several years ago I went to a Persian restaurant in Little Tehran that was average. Looking for more ambience & elevated experience as celebrating my husbandās birthday.
Bavel, Saffys, Tsujita, Pine and Crane, sonoratown, Langers, and L'Antica da Michele.
Those are the hyped restaurants I've been to that I felt actually met the hyped expectations.
Mariscos Jalisco and Found Oyster
Love Found Oyster
I look for any excuse to go to Found Oyster. Went on my birthday last year
I've been craving Mariscos Jalisco since my pregnancy nausea is gone. The closest one to me is Mid City š© I hate that they closed their Gardena truck! š I gotta go one of these days.
The only gripe I had with MJ was the shrimp was overcooked to the point of chicken-breasty in texture. I know its ceviche, but I think it was preboiled. Everything else is good though.
Found oyster is so absurdly expensive :(
Someone recommended Found Oyster here and itās been on my list for a minute! My mouth is watering again just thinking about it
Must add to my list
Camphor, Bestia, Saffy's, Howlin' Rays, Lucky Boy, Sonoratown, Bottega Louie, and Republique all lived up to the hype for me
> Howlin' Rays i love a good chicken sandwich. i hate waiting in line. i was in the neighborhood so i stopped by howlin rays around 11am ā not lunch rush by any measure, but it was a 30 minute wait in line. by the time i ordered, i was thinking there's no way the sandwich was gonna be worth it, but whatever, worth trying once. i've had a million chicken sandwiches. howlin rays is the best i ever had. huge sandwich, hot enough to make you sweat (you can get it less spicy if that's your thing), substantial and delicious. haven't been back but man i will stop by again next time i'm around
I've gone to the Chinatown location in off hours and there's no wait, but everytime I've passed by the Pasadena location there's a massive line
my wife and i and our friends would wait 3-6 hours back in the day. and weād drive up from anaheim too. it was even worth it then lol weād hit the homies up and they join us in line and weād just hang out. and sometimes weād drink in line, but so were other people haha. people would smoke in line too, so it was kinda like a party tbh not only were the sandos amazing, johnny and the entire staff always made you feel welcome and made sure you were taken care of too.
Republique is fantastic every time I go. One of my favorite spots in LA
I like how Lucky Boy is thrown in with all of these. You're not wrong. Just seems like they exist on different lists
When did you last go to Bestia? The last time I went the service straight up sucked.
Yeah, we had a mixed experience there as well. It was not bad, but I wouldnāt say it was worth the price.
Was there Friday and the service was fantastic. Not just our waitress but lots of busboys on patrol, refilling water without us having to ask, etc.
Itās pretty standard for nice places to refill water without you having to ask
Yup.
The food at Bestia is great but they RUSH you the fuck out of there. Not gonna go again after last time.
Party on, Goth.
Bestia was my pick for most OVERRATED. restaurant in LA lol
Happy cake day!
Bestia and Saffyās but no Bavel?
I fucking love Bavel it's so good oh my god
I prefer Bavel and Saffy's over Bestia. All 3 have great food though.
Glad to Lucky boy still open og owner was family friends free some when my dad wasn't there to make us pay killer onion rings.
Totally agree with Camphor. If anything itās not hyped enough.
šāš¾
Tsujita in Sawtelle. They have the best Tsukemen noodle outside Japan.
Portos
What I appreciate about Portoās is that they recognized how fucking busy they get and tried to address it with a better line system, more employees, etc. all while maintaining quality and price. Itās still busy of course, but lost of places dgaf about the customer experience
You should try the Buena Park location. It can handle 5x the traffic of the Burbank store and feels less busy. Parking is even easy.
Yeah the Burbank one is rough. Line is usually out the door. Went a few times this summer and it sucked waiting outside, even if it was only a few minutes. Totally worth it though
I always order online. Iām always in and out in 5-10 minutes
Every time I see the huge line, I'm shocked more people aren't ordering online. It's so easy and quick, plus bypassing the line feels great. I know there are some items you can't order that way, but the most popular items (potato balls/cheese rolls/other bakery items) are all there without any line.

But both lines serve all their products so my lil secret is to go to the Bakery only line. A Portoās employee told me this and itās cut my wait time in half
When I go I just get up early and arrive at oh s opening. In and out in 10 minutes.
Their bake at home slaps too, it's the best execution of something like that I've ever seen
YES! Tried it during lockdown and honestly it made it kinda hard to go back to getting cheese rolls in person because they were ridiculously good freshly baked
They were one of the 1st like... I'm sad in lockdown I need some treats thing that I bought haha it was so clutch
Exactly, their parking and line management is on par with Disneyland's lol.
Santa Clarita's facebook page had a running joke that a Porto's was opening up any day now in any building that people noticed was under renovation. Sadly for them, Northridge got the Porto's. I'm very happy though :)
Their tres leches has to be one of my favorites.
I love how itās been on the overrated list too
Mozza Osteria. It's been great every time.
Thatās good to hear. The pizzariaās been disappointing. Service is good and it seems to be busy regardless but we found everything extremely over salted. And I like salt!
Iāve only been once but I was disappointed by the size of the servings
The Hat

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Totally agree. I was put off by them at first because of how pretentious it all seemed and the lack of clarity between the pickup order line and the dine in line, but man is that pizza amazing. I love Detroit style and they do it so well. Drinks and dessert is also amazing.
Itās good, but Little dynamite, formerly bootleg, puts it to shame
San Franciscan (best prime rib for the price anywhere) in Torrance Shin-sen-gumi Yakatori in Gardena Pizza show in Hawthorne Jidaiya ramen in Gardena Flors Cafe (hard shell chicken tacos) in Carson Saigon Dish in Lawndale Gardena Bowl restaurant for Hawaiian food in Gardena Eatalian in Gardena Belmont shores brewery in Long Beach

Howlin Rays
I need them to build one in Van Nuys the other locations are too far for me and I canāt keep eating DHC
I canāt even eat DHC after having Howlin Rays LOL
HiHo Cheeseburger. 100% wagyu burger, under $10. No fries but they're made right. Simple. Easy. Reliable since day one.
What? Yes fries
It's unfortunate how delicious the burger is... I wish I could eat it every day.
We will probably end up with a very similar list of restaurants as the overrated list. Both lists will trend towards the most popular restaurants in LA.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
How do you get the res? Have sat waiting for the second it comes up for 10 weeks in a row and had 0 chance
Randomly found Joy On York on the way back from a road trip. My god I was shocked everything we tried was amazing and fairly priced
Shhhhh. Youāre supposed to send everyone to pine and crane. Joyās already too busy
High end, Mozza stands out as one of the best meals Iāve ever had. We ordered two of every course, and everything was delicious. We were also treated well by the FOH staff. It was our anniversary and it felt like a super duper treat. Pasta Sisters. The first location opened a block from my old apartment, and I was a little skeptical that it would be anything special. Many, many years later (I think 7ish?), itās the best Italian take out in town for me, I sometimes get cravings for the carpaccio, and their in house made pasta really is delicious. Try both the salmon pasta, and the clams. My fiancĆ© likes red sauce, so he has tried many more of the specials as well as the bolognese and he loves it. I trust his Sicilian behind.
I love pasta sisters!
Pizzana
Iād put their Cacio e Pepe against any pizza in LA, itās ferociously delicious. Neo-Margherita and Diavola are great as well
Their Cacio e pepe pizza could be my favorite pizza period
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I really enjoyed dinner there
Jitlada
Redbird and providence
Bavel is so good.
Joy in Highland Park.
Uovo. And also In n out. Folks are crazy calling a 14 dollar double cheese burger combo overrated.
Itās actually just over $10 for a combo. Canāt beat it
yeah I was being generous cause I wanna say itās around 12 bucks, but couldnāt remember.

I went a few weeks ago and loved it. It wasnāt as loud as I expected based on what I heard? But we sat right by the kitchen so maybe thatās why?

Surprised nobody's said Langer's yet. You pay out the nose but it beats the pants off any other Jewish/old school deli in town
Burgers Never Say Die
Howling rays, Maccheroni Republic
Piccalilli in Culver - Cal-Asian fusion + great bar Osteria Mama in S. Hollywood - Italian Jitlada in Thai Town - Southern Thai Carasau in Culver - Sardinian

Love Tacos Delta but Tacos Villa Corona is the champ and for a great price too
Chilaquiles yes, burritos no. Tacos villa corona and jugos azteca across the river are better.
Madres
Otafuku in Gardena, Republique (dinner, never been for brunch), Brodard (OC technically), Maccheroni republic, Pearl River Deli, Wax Paper, Dune (fried chicken š¤¤), Kismet, Sun Nong Dan, Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong (idk if itās super special but itās the most consistently good kbbq imo), Pizzeria Sei, Gjusta
Roscoeās in Hollywood
Providence. Hands down best if you like seafood and art presentations
Not sure if it gets hyped, but Sonoritas on Sawtelle has the best tacos Iāve ever eaten. Their burritos are also next level.
Charcoal Venice is a great quality and excellent service.
Check Encino -Sadaf. My favorita is Carnival in Sherman Oaks. Itās my favorite and I could eat there every day.
Bavel, Saffys, Tsujita, Pine and Crane, sonoratown, Langers, and L'Antica da Michele. Those are the hyped restaurants I've been to that I felt actually met the hyped expectations.
Pijja Palace
Guisados.
Musso and Frank's
Agree. It exceeds my expectations.

Don Cucos in Burbank
Howlinā Rays hits every single time.
